Beautified Life
زُيِّنَ لِلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ ٱلۡحَيَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنۡيَا وَيَسۡخَرُونَ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْۘ وَٱلَّذِينَ ٱتَّقَوۡاْ فَوۡقَهُمۡ يَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِيَٰمَةِۗ وَٱللَّهُ يَرۡزُقُ مَن يَشَآءُ بِغَيۡرِ حِسَابٖ ٢١٢
Beautified is the life of this world for those who disbelieve, and they mock at those who believe. But those who obey Allah’s Orders and keep away from what He has forbidden will be above them on the Day of Resurrection. And Allah gives to whom He wills without limit.
Surah 2 Al-Baqarah Verse 212
- Allah has made the life of this world beautiful for the disbelievers who are satisfied with it, who collect wealth but refrain from spending it on what they have been commanded. Instead, they ridicule the believers who ignore this life and who spend whatever they earn on what pleases their Lord.
- It is reported in Sahih (that the Prophet, pbuh said): ‘The son of Adam says, “My Money, My Money!” Yet, what is your money except that which you eat and use up, wear and tear, and spend in charity and thus keep (in your record). Other than that, it will go away and will be left for the people (the inheritors)’
- Again, the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘The Dunya (life of this world) is the residence of those who have no residence, the wealth of those who have no wealth, and it is harvested by those who have no sense of reason’
لَا يَغُرَّنَّكَ تَقَلُّبُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ فِي ٱلۡبِلَٰدِ ١٩٦ مَتَٰعٞ قَلِيلٞ ثُمَّ مَأۡوَىٰهُمۡ جَهَنَّمُۖ وَبِئۡسَ ٱلۡمِهَادُ ١٩٧
Let not the free disposal (and affluence) of the disbelievers throughout the land deceive you. A brief enjoyment, then their ultimate abode is Hell; and worst indeed is that place for rest.
Surah 3 Al-Imran Verses 196-197
وَلَقَدۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَآ إِلَىٰٓ أُمَمٖ مِّن قَبۡلِكَ فَأَخَذۡنَٰهُم بِٱلۡبَأۡسَآءِ وَٱلضَّرَّآءِ لَعَلَّهُمۡ يَتَضَرَّعُونَ ٤٢ فَلَوۡلَآ إِذۡ جَآءَهُم بَأۡسُنَا تَضَرَّعُواْ وَلَٰكِن قَسَتۡ قُلُوبُهُمۡ وَزَيَّنَ لَهُمُ ٱلشَّيۡطَٰنُ مَا كَانُواْ يَعۡمَلُونَ ٤٣ فَلَمَّا نَسُواْ مَا ذُكِّرُواْ بِهِۦ فَتَحۡنَا عَلَيۡهِمۡ أَبۡوَٰبَ كُلِّ شَيۡءٍ حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا فَرِحُواْ بِمَآ أُوتُوٓاْ أَخَذۡنَٰهُم بَغۡتَةٗ فَإِذَا هُم مُّبۡلِسُونَ ٤٤
Verily, We sent (Messengers) to many nations before you (O Muhammad, pbuh). And We seized them with extreme poverty and loss in health (with calamities) so that they might humble themselves. When Our torment reached them, why then did they not humble themselves? But their hearts become hardened, and Shaitan made fair seeming to them that which they used to do. So when they forgot (the warning) with which they had been reminded, We opened for them gates of every (pleasant) thing, until in the midst of their enjoyment in that which they were given, all of a sudden, We took them (in punishment) and lo! They were plunged into destruction with deep regrets and sorrows.
Surah 6 Al-An’am Verses 42-44
- Allah mentions in these verses three stages of any society:
- Infliction of poverty and calamity (to remind them to obey Allah and revert to Him)
- Enhanced provisions (as a deception, when warning is not heeded)
- Destruction (in the form of death or complete devastation)
- Al Hasan Al Basri said “Whomever Allah gives provision and he thinks that Allah is not testing him, has no wisdom. Whomever has little provision and thinks Allah will not look at (provide for) him, has no wisdom”
وَلِتَصۡغَىٰٓ إِلَيۡهِ أَفِۡٔدَةُ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يُؤۡمِنُونَ بِٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ وَلِيَرۡضَوۡهُ وَلِيَقۡتَرِفُواْ مَا هُم مُّقۡتَرِفُونَ ١١٣
(And this is in order) that the hearts of those who disbelieve in the Hereafter may incline to such (deceit) and that they may remain pleased with it, and that they may commit what they are committing (all kinds of sins and evil deeds)
Surah 6 Al-An’am Verse 113
- ‘such (deceit)’ – refers to ‘specious talks’ amongst Shayatin (both human and jinn) and signifies all the trickery and manoeuvring to which they resort, all their efforts aimed at sowing doubts about Islam and undermining people’s faith in it
وَمِمَّنۡ خَلَقۡنَآ أُمَّةٞ يَهۡدُونَ بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَبِهِۦ يَعۡدِلُونَ ١٨١ وَٱلَّذِينَ كَذَّبُواْ بَِٔايَٰتِنَا سَنَسۡتَدۡرِجُهُم مِّنۡ حَيۡثُ لَا يَعۡلَمُونَ ١٨٢ وَأُمۡلِي لَهُمۡۚ إِنَّ كَيۡدِي مَتِينٌ ١٨٣
And of those whom We have created, there is a community who guides (others) with the truth, and establishes justice therewith. Those who reject Our Ayat, We shall gradually seize them with punishment in ways they perceive not. And I respite them; certainly My plot is strong.
Surah 7 Al-A’raf Verses 181-183
- Narrated Muawiyah bin Abu Sufiyan that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘There will always be a group of my Ummah who are apparent on the Truth, unabated by those, who fail or oppose them, until the Hour commences’
- ‘gradually seize them’ - refers to the doors of provisions will be opened for them and also the means of livelihood in this life. They will be deceived by all this and think that they are on the correct path.
- ‘Respite’ – prolong what they are in
۞وَلَوۡ يُعَجِّلُ ٱللَّهُ لِلنَّاسِ ٱلشَّرَّ ٱسۡتِعۡجَالَهُم بِٱلۡخَيۡرِ لَقُضِيَ إِلَيۡهِمۡ أَجَلُهُمۡۖ فَنَذَرُ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يَرۡجُونَ لِقَآءَنَا فِي طُغۡيَٰنِهِمۡ يَعۡمَهُونَ ١١
And were Allah to hasten for mankind the evil as He hastens for them good, then they would have been ruined. So we leave those who expect not their Meeting with Us, in their trespasses, wandering blindly in distraction.
Surah 10 Yunus Verse 11
- Allah tells us about His Forbearance and Benevolence with His servants. He does not respond to them when they pray with evil intentions against themselves, their wealth or their children during times of grief or anger. Abu Bakr Al-Bazzar recorded in his Musnad that Jabir said that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘Do not pray against yourselves, do not pray against your children, do not pray against your wealth, for your prayer may coincide with a time of response from Allah and Allah will respond to you’
مَن كَانَ يُرِيدُ ٱلۡحَيَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنۡيَا وَزِينَتَهَا نُوَفِّ إِلَيۡهِمۡ أَعۡمَٰلَهُمۡ فِيهَا وَهُمۡ فِيهَا لَا يُبۡخَسُونَ ١٥ أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ لَيۡسَ لَهُمۡ فِي ٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ إِلَّا ٱلنَّارُۖ وَحَبِطَ مَا صَنَعُواْ فِيهَا وَبَٰطِلٞ مَّا كَانُواْ يَعۡمَلُونَ ١٦
Whoever desires the life of the world and its glitter, to them We shall pay in full (the wages of) their deeds therein, and they will have no diminution therein. They are those for whom there is nothing in the Hereafter but Fire, and vain are the deeds they did therein. And of no effect is that which they used to do.
Surah 11 Hud Verses 15-16
- Ibn Abbas said concerning this Verse “Verily, those who show off, will be given their reward for their good deeds in this life. This will be so that they are not wronged, even the amount equivalent to the size of the speck on a date stone”. Ibn Abbas continued “Therefore, whoever does a good deed seeking to acquire worldly gain – like fasting, praying, or standing for prayer at night – and he does so in order to acquire worldly benefit, then Allah says ‘Give him the reward of that which he sought in the worldly life’ and his deed that he did is wasted because he was seeking the life of this world. In the Hereafter, he will be of the losers”
- This Verse was revealed concerning the people who perform deeds to be seen.
- Qatadah said “Whoever’s concern, intention and goal is this worldly life, then Allah will reward him for his good deeds in this life, then when he reaches the Next Life, he will not have any good deeds that will be rewarded. However, concerning the believer, he will be rewarded for his good deeds in this life and in the Hereafter as well”
مَّن كَانَ يُرِيدُ ٱلۡعَاجِلَةَ عَجَّلۡنَا لَهُۥ فِيهَا مَا نَشَآءُ لِمَن نُّرِيدُ ثُمَّ جَعَلۡنَا لَهُۥ جَهَنَّمَ يَصۡلَىٰهَا مَذۡمُومٗا مَّدۡحُورٗا ١٨ وَمَنۡ أَرَادَ ٱلۡأٓخِرَةَ وَسَعَىٰ لَهَا سَعۡيَهَا وَهُوَ مُؤۡمِنٞ فَأُوْلَٰٓئِكَ كَانَ سَعۡيُهُم مَّشۡكُورٗا ١٩ كُلّٗا نُّمِدُّ هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ وَهَٰٓؤُلَآءِ مِنۡ عَطَآءِ رَبِّكَۚ وَمَا كَانَ عَطَآءُ رَبِّكَ مَحۡظُورًا ٢٠
Whoever desires the quick-passing (transitory enjoyments of this world), We readily grant him what We will for whom We like. Then, afterwards, We have appointed for him Hell; he will burn therein disgraced and rejected (far away from Allah’s Mercy). And whoever desires the Hereafter and strives for it, with the necessary effort due for it, while he is a believer, then such are the ones whose striving shall be appreciated (rewarded by Allah). On each these as well as those We bestow from the bounties of your Lord. And the bounties of your Lord can never be forbidden.
Surah 17 Al-Isra Verse 18-20
- ‘On each’ – meaning, on each of the two groups, those who desire this world and those who desire the Hereafter
إِنَّا جَعَلۡنَا مَا عَلَى ٱلۡأَرۡضِ زِينَةٗ لَّهَا لِنَبۡلُوَهُمۡ أَيُّهُمۡ أَحۡسَنُ عَمَلٗا ٧ وَإِنَّا لَجَٰعِلُونَ مَا عَلَيۡهَا صَعِيدٗا جُرُزًا ٨
Verily, We have made that which is on earth as an adornment for it, in order that We may test them (mankind) as to which of them are best in deeds. And verily, We shall make all that is on it (the earth) a bare dry soil.
Surah 18 Al-Kahf Verse 7-8
- Allah tells us that He has made this world a temporary abode adorned with transient beauty; and He made it a place of trial, not a place of settlement. Narrated Abu Said that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘This world is sweet and green, and Allah makes you generations succeeding one another, so He is watching what you will do. Beware of (the beguilement of) this world and beware of women, for the first affliction that Children of Israel suffered was that of women’
- ‘bare dry soil’ – meaning it will be destroyed and everything on it made bare and dry, with no vegetation or any other benefit
ٱلۡمَالُ وَٱلۡبَنُونَ زِينَةُ ٱلۡحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡيَاۖ وَٱلۡبَٰقِيَٰتُ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتُ خَيۡرٌ عِندَ رَبِّكَ ثَوَابٗا وَخَيۡرٌ أَمَلٗا ٤٦
Wealth and children are the adornment of the life of this world. But the good righteous deeds that last are better with your Lord for rewards and better in respect of hope.
Surah 18 Al-Kahf Verse 46
- ‘good righteous deeds that last’ refers to:
- Five daily prayers (Ibn Abbas)
- Subhan Allah, Alhamdulillah, La ilaha illallah and Allah-u-Akbar [Glory be to Allah; Praise be to Allah; there is none worthy of worship except Allah; Allah is Most Great] – recitation thereof (Said bin Jubayr)
- Lailahaillallah, Subhan Allah, Alhamdulillah, Allah-o-Akbar and La hawla wala quuwata illa billah hil aliyil Azim [last: there is no strength and no power except with Allah, the Exalted, the Almighty] – recitation thereof (Uthman)
- Ibn Abbas also added “remembrance of Allah saying (apart from above) Tabarak Allah, Astagfirallah, Sallallahu ‘ala Rasul Allah” and Fasting, Prayer, Hajj, Sadaqah (charity), freeing slaves, Jihad, maintaining ties of kinship, and all other good deeds
- Good words
- All righteous deeds (Abdur Rahman bin Zayd)
- It has been recorded that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘Well done for five things! (How heavy they will weigh in the balance!): La ilaha illallah, Allah-u-Akbar, Subhan Allah, and Alhamdu lillah, and a righteous son who dies and his parents seek the reward of Allah’ and he said: ‘Well done! Well done for five things! Whoever meets Allah believing in them, he will enter Paradise: if he believes in Allah, the Last Day, Paradise and Hell, Resurrection after death, and the Reckoning’
قُلۡ مَن كَانَ فِي ٱلضَّلَٰلَةِ فَلۡيَمۡدُدۡ لَهُ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنُ مَدًّاۚ حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا رَأَوۡاْ مَا يُوعَدُونَ إِمَّا ٱلۡعَذَابَ وَإِمَّا ٱلسَّاعَةَ فَسَيَعۡلَمُونَ مَنۡ هُوَ شَرّٞ مَّكَانٗا وَأَضۡعَفُ جُندٗا ٧٥ وَيَزِيدُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱهۡتَدَوۡاْ هُدٗىۗ وَٱلۡبَٰقِيَٰتُ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتُ خَيۡرٌ عِندَ رَبِّكَ ثَوَابٗا وَخَيۡرٞ مَّرَدًّا ٧٦
Say (O Muhammad, pbuh): Whoever is in error, the Most Gracious (Allah) will extend (the rope) to him, until, when they see that which they were promised, either the torment or the Hour, they will come to know who is worst in position, and who is weaker in forces. And Allah increases in guidance those who walk aright. And the righteous good deeds that last are better with your Lord for reward and better for resort.
Surah 19 Maryam Verses 75-76
- ‘extend (the rope)’ – meaning Allah shall give him respite in that which he is in, until he meets his Lord and his appointed time will have arrived
- ‘those who walk aright’: True believers in the Oneness of Allah, who fear Allah much (abstain from all kinds of sins and evil deeds which He has forbidden) and love Allah much (perform all kinds of good deeds which He has ordained)
وَلَا تَمُدَّنَّ عَيۡنَيۡكَ إِلَىٰ مَا مَتَّعۡنَا بِهِۦٓ أَزۡوَٰجٗا مِّنۡهُمۡ زَهۡرَةَ ٱلۡحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡيَا لِنَفۡتِنَهُمۡ فِيهِۚ وَرِزۡقُ رَبِّكَ خَيۡرٞ وَأَبۡقَىٰ ١٣١
And strain not your eyes in longing for the things We have given for enjoyment to various groups of them (polytheists and disbelievers), the splendour of the life of this world, that We may test them thereby. But the provision of your Lord is better and more lasting.
Surah 20 Ta-Ha Verse 131
- ‘life of this world’ – In the Sahih it is recorded that once Umar bin Al-Khattab cried seeing that the Prophet (pbuh) lay on a sandy straw mat, so the prophet (pbuh) asked: ‘What makes you cry, O Umar?’ He replied, “O Messenger of Allah, verily Kisra and Caesar are living in their luxurious conditions, yet you are the chosen Friend of Allah amongst the creation?” The Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘Do you have doubt, O son of Al-Khattab? Those people have had their good hastened for them in the life of this world’
- The Prophet (pbuh) was the most abstinent of people concerning worldly luxuries, even though he had the ability to attain them. If he acquired anything of worldly treasure he would spend it on this and that for the servants of Allah. Narrated Abu Said that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘Verily, the thing I fear most for you all is that Allah will allow you to acquire of the splendour of this world’
أَيَحۡسَبُونَ أَنَّمَا نُمِدُّهُم بِهِۦ مِن مَّالٖ وَبَنِينَ ٥٥ نُسَارِعُ لَهُمۡ فِي ٱلۡخَيۡرَٰتِۚ بَل لَّا يَشۡعُرُونَ ٥٦
Do they think that in wealth and children with which We enlarge them We hasten to them with good things? Nay, but they perceive not.
Surah 23 Al-Muminun Verse 55-56
- ‘Nay’ – means Allah only gives those things to them (disbelievers) in order to make them go further (in sin) and to give them more time and not because they are honoured or precious in His Sight.
- Narrated Abdullah bin Masud that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘Allah has distributed your behaviour to you just as He has distributed your provision. Allah gives the things of this world to those whom He loves and those whom He does not love, but whoever is given religious commitment by Allah is loved by Him. By the One in Whose Hand is my soul! No servant truly submits until his heart and his tongue submit, and he does not truly believe until his neighbour is safe from his harm’ The listeners asked: “What is Harm, O Messenger of Allah (pbuh)?” He said: ‘His wrongdoing and misbehaviour. No person who earns unlawful wealth and spends it will be blessed in that; if he gives it in charity, it will not be accepted from him and if he leaves behind (when he dies), it will be his provision in the Fire. Allah does not wash away an evil deed with another, but He washes away evil deeds with good deeds, for impurity cannot wash away with another impurity’
- ‘they perceive not’ – In this connection there are certain basic points which need to be appreciated:
- First, man’s success is something loftier and more pervasive than material or transient worldly achievements
- Second, unless one frees oneself from the view that worldly success or lack of it is an index of truth and falsehood and of good and evil, one will never be able to find the Straight Path of sound belief or outlook nor sound conduct and behaviour.
- Third, it needs to be emphasised that the present life is meant essentially to test man rather than to recompense him for his works. As far as man’s moral acts are concerned, even if there is a recompense for them during this worldly life, it is on a very limited scale and is highly imperfect. Additionally, in the recompense itself there is an ingrained element of test and trial. It would be a misconception of the highest magnitude, rather a folly, to believe that whatever good a person receives here is in reward for his goodness, and that receiving such a reward is an index of the recipient being right, righteous, loved and favoured by Allah. Likewise, the disposition to regard anyone who is hit by misfortune as one who is necessarily under ‘punishment’, is in the wrong, unrighteous, and among those who are disapproved of by Allah is quite unjustified and misleading. A seeker of truth should realise at the very outset, that the world is a testing ground for all individuals, communities, indeed the whole of mankind and this in a number of ways. The different circumstances which confront people during the course of this test cannot be regarded as the final judgement of reward and punishment. Nor can they be taken as the criteria for determining which concepts, moral attributes and actions are right and which are wrong. Nor can they be held as the criteria for determining who are loved by Allah and who are subjected to His Wrath.
- Fourth, without doubt adherence to the truth and righteousness leads to success and felicity (though it may not be apparent). Likewise, falsehood and evil doing are bound to result in failure (though it may not be apparent)
- Fifth, if we find an individual or community deviated from the path of truth and is engrossed in sin and corruption, in wrong-doing and transgression, and is, nevertheless, lavished with bounties, the meaning of all this is quite clear. According to Quran, such an individual or nation has been put to serious test. The bounties that are apparently being lavished on it are not indicative of Allah’s Mercy and Favour; rather in a way they signify His Wrath
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يُؤۡمِنُونَ بِٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ زَيَّنَّا لَهُمۡ أَعۡمَٰلَهُمۡ فَهُمۡ يَعۡمَهُونَ ٤ أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ لَهُمۡ سُوٓءُ ٱلۡعَذَابِ وَهُمۡ فِي ٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ هُمُ ٱلۡأَخۡسَرُونَ ٥
Verily, those who believe not in the Hereafter, We have made their deeds fair seeming to them, so that they wander about blindly. They are those for whom there will be an evil torment (in this world). And in the Hereafter, they will be the greatest losers.
Surah 27 An-Naml Verses 4-5
- Whenever a person is not sure that there will be another life following the present one – a life wherein he will receive the true measure of reward and punishment in consideration of his deeds – he is bound to develop a materialistic worldview. Whatever can bring him pleasure, enjoyment, material benefit and luxuriant living, and whatever can endow him with power and authority will seem good to him, regardless of all moral and philosophical considerations. His only goal will be the pursuit of worldly advantage and this will make him wander around in every direction. Seized with this behaviour, a man’s evil deeds become attractive and charming and they are left to continue in their misguidance so they are lost and confused.
- Making evil deeds attractive is sometimes attributed to Allah (as in the present verse) and sometimes to Satan. When attributed to Allah, it means, that whoever accepts such an attitude to life, becomes infatuated with it. By contrast, when it is attributed to Satan, it means that Satan presents those people who subscribe to a materialistic worldview with an imaginary picture of a seductive heaven and continually prods him, saying “Go ahead, you are doing well”
وَمَآ أُوتِيتُم مِّن شَيۡءٖ فَمَتَٰعُ ٱلۡحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡيَا وَزِينَتُهَاۚ وَمَا عِندَ ٱللَّهِ خَيۡرٞ وَأَبۡقَىٰٓۚ أَفَلَا تَعۡقِلُونَ ٦٠ أَفَمَن وَعَدۡنَٰهُ وَعۡدًا حَسَنٗا فَهُوَ لَٰقِيهِ كَمَن مَّتَّعۡنَٰهُ مَتَٰعَ ٱلۡحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡيَا ثُمَّ هُوَ يَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِيَٰمَةِ مِنَ ٱلۡمُحۡضَرِينَ ٦١
And whatever you have been given is an enjoyment of the life of (this) world and its adornment, and that which is with Allah is better and will remain forever. Have you then no sense? Is he whom We have promised an excellent Promise (Paradise) – which he will find true – like him whom We have made to enjoy the luxuries of life of (this) world, then on the Day of Resurrection, he will be among those brought up (to be punished in Hell Fire)?
Surah 28 Al-Qassas Verses 60-61
- Two things need our attention here: First, the present life which is no more than a few years for anyone is only the temporary phase of a journey. The real life which will be everlasting is yet to come. In this life man may amass as much provision as he may please and live the few years at his disposal as comfortably as he can, it will in any case come to an end, and man will depart from the world empty handed. No sensible person will like to make the bad bargain of suffering the everlasting distress and affliction in the Hereafter in exchange for the pleasures and comforts of his brief sojourn in the world. As against this, he would rather prefer to face a few years of hardships here and earn the goodness that may earn him everlasting bliss and comfort in the eternal life of the next world.
Secondly, Allah’s religion does not demand that man should totally refrain from seeking and enjoying the good things of life and discard its adornments in any case. Its only demand is that he should prefer the Hereafter to the world, for the world is perishable and the Hereafter everlasting; and the pleasures of the world are inferior and of the Hereafter superior. Therefore, man must try to attain those provisions and adornments of the world that may enable him to fare well in the everlasting life of the next world, or at least protect him from the eternal loss there. But in case there is a question of a comparison between the two, and the success of the world and of the Hereafter oppose and contradict each other, the faith demands, and this is the demand of man’s good sense too, that he should sacrifice the world to the Hereafter, and should never adopt the way of only seeking the transitory provisions and adornments of this world, which inevitably lead to his ruin in the Hereafter forever.
- Keeping these two things in view let us see what Allah says to the disbelievers of Makkah in the foregoing sentences. He does not tell them to wind up their business, stop their trade and follow His Prophets and become mendicants. What He says is that the worldly wealth of which they are so enamored, is very meager and they can utilize it only for a few days in this worldly life. Contrary to this, that which is with Allah is much better both in quality and in quantity and is also everlasting. Therefore, they would be foolish if for the sake of benefiting by the limited blessings of this transitory life, they adopted the way whose evil results they will have to suffer in the form of everlasting loss in the next world. They should judge for themselves as to who is successful: He who exerts himself in the service of his Lord and then is blessed with His favors for ever, or he who will be produced as a culprit in His court, only after having had an opportunity of enjoying unlawful wealth for a few days in the world.
وَلَوۡلَآ أَن يَكُونَ ٱلنَّاسُ أُمَّةٗ وَٰحِدَةٗ لَّجَعَلۡنَا لِمَن يَكۡفُرُ بِٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ لِبُيُوتِهِمۡ سُقُفٗا مِّن فِضَّةٖ وَمَعَارِجَ عَلَيۡهَا يَظۡهَرُونَ ٣٣ وَلِبُيُوتِهِمۡ أَبۡوَٰبٗا وَسُرُرًا عَلَيۡهَا يَتَّكُِٔونَ ٣٤ وَزُخۡرُفٗاۚ وَإِن كُلُّ ذَٰلِكَ لَمَّا مَتَٰعُ ٱلۡحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡيَاۚ وَٱلۡأٓخِرَةُ عِندَ رَبِّكَ لِلۡمُتَّقِينَ ٣٥
And were it not that mankind would have become one community (all disbelievers desiring worldly life only) We would have provided for those who disbelieve in the Most Gracious (Allah) silver roofs for their houses, and elevators whereby they ascend, and for their houses, doors (of silver) and thrones (of silver) on which they could recline. And adornment of gold. Yet all this would have been nothing but an enjoyment of this world. And the Hereafter with your Lord is for the Muttaqun.
Surah 43 Az-Zukhruf Verses 33-35
- ‘one community’ – means were it not for the fact that many ignorant people would think that Allah’s giving them wealth was a sign that He loves the person to whom He gives it, and thus they would have all agreed upon disbelief for the sake of wealth
- It is reported in the Sahih that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘Do not drink from vessels of gold and silver, and do not eat from plates of the same, for these things are for them (disbelievers) in this world and for us in the Hereafter’
- Narrated Sahl bin Sad that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘If this world were worth a gnat’s wing before Allah, He would never give a disbeliever a drink of water’
أَفَرَءَيۡتَ مَنِ ٱتَّخَذَ إِلَٰهَهُۥ هَوَىٰهُ وَأَضَلَّهُ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ عِلۡمٖ وَخَتَمَ عَلَىٰ سَمۡعِهِۦ وَقَلۡبِهِۦ وَجَعَلَ عَلَىٰ بَصَرِهِۦ غِشَٰوَةٗ فَمَن يَهۡدِيهِ مِنۢ بَعۡدِ ٱللَّهِۚ أَفَلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ ٢٣ وَقَالُواْ مَا هِيَ إِلَّا حَيَاتُنَا ٱلدُّنۡيَا نَمُوتُ وَنَحۡيَا وَمَا يُهۡلِكُنَآ إِلَّا ٱلدَّهۡرُۚ وَمَا لَهُم بِذَٰلِكَ مِنۡ عِلۡمٍۖ إِنۡ هُمۡ إِلَّا يَظُنُّونَ ٢٤
Have you seen him who takes his own lust (vain desires) as his ilah (god)? And Allah left him astray with knowledge and sealed his hearing and his heart, and put a cover on his sight. Who then will guide him after Allah? Will you not then remember? And they say: ‘There is nothing but our life of this world, we die and we live and nothing destroys us except Ad-Dahar (time)’. And they have no knowledge of it, they only conjecture.
Surah 45 Al-Jathiyah Verse 23-24
- To take one’s lust as god means that one fully becomes the slave of one’s desire, as in:
- This person has made his base self his deity. He does all that his base self asks for. In so doing, he fails to observe the limits of the lawful and the unlawful laid down by Allah (Ibn Jarir Al-Tabari)
- Such a person obeys the propmptings of his base self so religiously as one should serve Allah (Abu Bakr Al-Jassas)
- He is led by his base self and follows it blindly. In other words, he looks after his self with a devotion that one consecrates to Allah (Zamakshari)
If someone behaves as described above, he is the servant of his unbridled desires, no matter whether he verbally calls them his god or not and whether he worships them as idols or not
- ‘astray with knowledge’ – This has two possible meanings:
- Notwithstanding a person’s knowledge, Allah directed him to error for he was a slave of his own desires
- In view of Allah’s Knowledge that one deifies one’s desires, Allah pushes him into error and misguidance
- ‘Will you not then remember’ – it becomes evident from the context of the verse that those who are bent on unbridled gratification of their desires are none else than those that deny the Hereafter. Such people look upon the idea of the Hereafter as so many shackles and fetters upon their freedom. Even a learned person, who is devoid of this consciousness (that denial of the Hereafter is fatal for morality and that what can restrain and keep under control is his belief in accountability in the Hereafter) is apt to behave like a brute
- ‘…they only conjecture’ – Swayed by their own base desires, it is the disbelievers’ wishful thinking which prompts them to deny the reality of the Hereafter
أَفَمَن كَانَ عَلَىٰ بَيِّنَةٖ مِّن رَّبِّهِۦ كَمَن زُيِّنَ لَهُۥ سُوٓءُ عَمَلِهِۦ وَٱتَّبَعُوٓاْ أَهۡوَآءَهُم ١٤
Is he who is on a clear proof from his Lord, like those for whom their evil deeds that they do are beautified for them, while they follow their own lusts (evil desires)?
Surah 47 Muhammad Verse 14
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱرۡتَدُّواْ عَلَىٰٓ أَدۡبَٰرِهِم مِّنۢ بَعۡدِ مَا تَبَيَّنَ لَهُمُ ٱلۡهُدَى ٱلشَّيۡطَٰنُ سَوَّلَ لَهُمۡ وَأَمۡلَىٰ لَهُمۡ ٢٥ ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمۡ قَالُواْ لِلَّذِينَ كَرِهُواْ مَا نَزَّلَ ٱللَّهُ سَنُطِيعُكُمۡ فِي بَعۡضِ ٱلۡأَمۡرِۖ وَٱللَّهُ يَعۡلَمُ إِسۡرَارَهُمۡ ٢٦
Verily, those who have turned back as disbelievers after the guidance has been manifested to them – Shaitan has beautified for them (their false hopes) and (Allah) prolonged their term (age). This is because they said to those who hate what Allah has sent down: ‘We will obey you in part of the matter’. But Allah knows their secrets.
Surah 47 Muhammad Verses 25-26
وَٱصۡبِرۡ عَلَىٰ مَا يَقُولُونَ وَٱهۡجُرۡهُمۡ هَجۡرٗا جَمِيلٗا ١٠ وَذَرۡنِي وَٱلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ أُوْلِي ٱلنَّعۡمَةِ وَمَهِّلۡهُمۡ قَلِيلًا ١١
And be patient (O Muhammad, pbuh) with what they say, and keep away from them in a good way. And leave Me alone to deal with the deniers, those who are in possession of good things of life. And give them respite for a little while.
Surah 73 Al-Muzammil Verses 10-11
