Patience and As-Salat
And seek help in Patience and As-Salat and truly, it is extremely heavy and hard except for Al-Khashi’un; who are certain that they are going to meet their Lord, and that to Him they are going to return.
Surah 2 Al-Baqarah Verses 45-46
- Al-Khashi’un are the true believers in Allah – those who obey Allah with full submission, fear much from His punishment, and believe in His promise and in His warnings
- Allah commanded His servants to use patience and prayer to acquire the good of this life and the Hereafter. Patience here has two connotations:
- Patience (here), it is said means fasting
- Patience also means, refraining from evil
- Ibn Abi Hatim narrated that Umar bin Al Khattab said, “There are two types of patience: good patience when the disaster strikes, and a better patience while avoiding the prohibitions of Allah”
And perform As-Salat and give Zakat, and whatever of good (deeds that Allah loves) you send forth for yourselves before you, you shall find it with Allah. Certainly, Allah is All-Seer of what you do.
Surah 2 Al-Baqarah Verse 110
- All-Seer – meaning that Allah is never unaware of the deeds of any person, nor will those deeds be lost by Him. Whether deeds are righteous or evil, Allah will award each according to what he or she deserves based on their deeds.
And to Allah belongs the east and the west, so wherever you turn there is the Face of Allah. Surely, Allah is All-Sufficient for His creatures’ needs, All-Knowing.
Surah 2 Al-Baqarah Verse 115
- Ibn Jarir said: “Others said that this Ayah was revealed permitting the one praying voluntary prayer to face wherever they wish in the east or west, while travelling, when in fear and when facing the enemy”
- It was also said that the Ayah was revealed about those who are unable to find the correct direction of Qiblah in the dark or due to cloudy skies, and, thus, prayed in a direction other than the Qiblah by mistake.
O you who believe! Seek help in Patience and As-Salat. Truly Allah is with As-Sabirun.
Surah 2 Al-Baqarah Verse 153
- The highest reward that can be granted to a people in recognition of its righteousness is its designation, by Allah’s command, to the leadership of the world in order to guide the entire human race to goodliness and righteousness. Since the Ummah has been invested with world leadership, it seemed necessary to caution the Muslims that the office which had been conferred on them was indeed no bed of roses. Once they undertook it, they would be subjected to all kinds of afflictions, put to all kinds of trials and tribulations and made to bear all kinds of deprivation. To acquire the strength that is needed to bear this heavy burden of responsibility, the believers should do two things:
- They should develop Patience
- They should devote themselves to Prayer
And certainly, We shall test you with something of fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives and fruits, but give glad tidings to As-Sabirun; who when afflicted with calamity say: ‘Truly, to Allah we belong and truly to Him we shall return’. They are those on who are the Salawat from their Lord, and receive His mercy, and it is they who are the guided ones.
Surah 2 Al-Baqarah verses 155-157
- The verse speaks about the believers who, when tested, remain patient with their Lord
- Saying does not signify the mere making of a statement. It means a statement which is accompanied by a deep conviction in one’s heart
- ‘To Allah do we belong’- this being so, a man is bound to think that whatever has been sacrificed for Allah has in fact attained its legitimate end, for it has been spent in the way of One to whom all things truly belong
- ‘And it is to Him that we are destined to return’ – refers to the fact that man will not stay forever in this world and will return, sooner or later, to Allah. And if a man is indeed destined to return to Allah why should he not return to Him having spent his all for His sake. This alternative is preferable to the pursuit of self-aggrandizement and then meeting death by either sickness or accident
- Salawat: who are blessed and will be forgiven
Guard strictly As-Salawat especially the middle Salat. And stand before Allah with obedience. And if you fear (an enemy) perform Salat on foot or riding. And when you are in safety, offer the Salat in the manner He has taught you, which you knew not.
Surah 2 Al-Baqarah Verses 238-239
- It is prayer which instils in man the fear of Allah. They inculcate the feeling of goodness and purity and the disposition to obey the ordinances of Allah, and foster adherence to righteousness. Without prayer it would be impossible for men to persist in observing the laws of Allah, and they would likely be swept away by a current of defiance and disobedience
- The middle prayer is the Asr Prayer according to the majority of the scholars among the companions
- Allah’s Messenger (pbuh) emphasised the necessity of preserving the Asr Prayer, when he said: ‘Whoever misses the Asr prayer will be like who has lost his family and money’; Also ‘On a cloudy day, perform the (Asr) Prayer early, for whoever misses the Asr Prayer, will have his (good) deeds annulled’
- ‘obedience’ refers to humbleness and humility before Him (during the prayer). The command indicates that it is not allowed to speak during the prayer. Zaid bin Aeqam said “One used to address his friend about various affairs during the prayer. Then when this Ayah was revealed: [And stand before Allah with obedience] we were ordered to refrain from speaking”
You shall certainly be tried and tested in your wealth and properties and in your personal selves, and you shall certainly hear much that will grieve you from those who received the Scripture before you and from those who ascribe partners to Allah; but if you persevere patiently, and become Al-Muttaqun then verily, that will be a determining factor in all affairs.
Surah 3 Al-Imran Verse 186
- Muslims should not lose their self control in the face of disbelievers’ invidious taunts and slander. Their accusations, debased talks and false propaganda should not provoke the Muslims into adopting a posture either inconsistent with truth and justice or with the dignity, decorum or high standards of moral conduct that become men of faith.
O you who believe! Endure and be more patient, and Rabitu, and have taqwa of Allah, so that you may be successful.
Surah 3 Al-Imran Verse 200
- The believers are commanded to be patient in the religion that Allah chose for them, Islam. They are not allowed to abandon it in times of comfort or hardship, ease or calamity, until they die as Muslims. They are also commanded to endure against their enemies
- Rabitu (Murabta) is to endure in acts of worship and perseverance. It also means to battle against the enemy and manning outposts to protect them from enemy incursions inside Muslim territory
- Narrated Sahl bin Sa’d As-Said that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘A day of Ribat in the cause of Allah is better than this life and all that is in it’
- Narrated Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘Should I tell you about actions with which Allah forgives sins and raises the grade? Performing perfect ablution in unfavourable conditions, the many steps one takes to Masjid, and awaiting prayer after the prayer, for this is the Ribat, this is the Ribat, this is the Ribat’
- The Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘Have taqwa of Allah wherever you may be, follow the evil deed with a good deed and it will erase it, and deal with people in a good manner’
And this (the Quran) is a blessed Book which We have sent down, confirming that which came before it, so that you may warn the Mother of the Towns and all those around it. Those who believe in the Hereafter believe in it, and they are constant in guarding their Salat.
Surah 6 Al-An’am Verse 92
And as to those who hold fast to the Book (i.e., act on its teachings) and perform As-Salat, certainly We shall never waste the reward of those who do righteous deeds.
Surah 7 Al-A’raf Verse 170
And obey Allah and His Messenger (pbuh) and do not dispute (with one another) lest you lose courage and your strength departs, and be patient. Surely, Allah is with those who are As-Sabirun.
Surah 8 Al-Anfal Verse 46
And if We give man a taste of mercy from Us, and then withdraw it from him, verily, he is disappointing, ungrateful. But if We let him taste good after evil has touched him, he is sure to say: ‘Ills have departed from me’. Surely, he is exultant and boastful. Except those who show patience and do righteous good deeds; those, theirs will be forgiveness and a great reward (Paradise).
Surah 11 Hud Verses 9-11
- Those who are patient exhibit poise and equanimity in the midst of viccisitudes of fortune. They do not allow changes of fortune to change their attitude and character. If circumstances are favourable and they enjoy wealth, power and fame, that does not make them power drunk and they keep on pursuing righteousness. Again, when they are visited with adversity, their dignity is not crushed out of all existence. Whenever Allah puts them to test – be it that of prosperity or of adversity – they maintain their dignified posture of moderation
And perform As-Salat at the two ends of the day and in some hours of the night. Verily, the good deeds remove the evil deeds. That is a reminder for the mindful. And be patient; verily Allah wastes not the reward of the good doers.
Surah 11 Hud Verses 114-115
- Narrated Abu Harayarah that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘Do you think that if there was a flowing river at the door of anyone and he bathed in it five times every day, would there be any dirt left on him?’ They said “No, O Messenger of Allah(pbuh)” He said: ‘This is like the five daily prayers, for Allah uses them to wipe away the sins and wrongdoings’
- Narrated Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘The five daily prayers, Jumuah (Friday Prayer) to Jumuah and (the fast of) Ramadan to Ramadan are expiations for whatever sins were committed between them, as long as you stay away from major sins’
- Narrated Uthman bin Affan that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘Whoever makes Wadu like this Wadu of mine, then he prays two units of prayer in which he does not speak to himself, he will be forgiven for his previous sins’
…Verily, he who fears Allah with obedience to Him and is patient, then surely, Allah makes not the reward of the Muhsinun to be lost.
Surah 12 Yusuf Verse 90
And those who remain patient, seeking their Lords Countenance, perform As-Salat (prayer), and spend out of that which We have bestowed on them, secretly and openly, and defend evil with good, for such there is a good end; Adn (Eden) Paradise (everlasting Gardens), which they shall enter and (also) those who acted righteously from among their fathers, and their wives, and their offspring. And angels shall enter unto them from every gate (saying): “Salamun Alaikum (peace be upon you) for that you persevered in patience! Excellent indeed is the final home!”
Surah 13 Ar-Rad Verses 22-24
- …those who remain patient…: They remain self possessed and keep under control all their desires and lusts and do not transgress the bounds, and they do not yield to temptations to disobey their Lord in order to gain advantages and gratify their desires. Nay, they bear with calm courage and endurance losses and afflictions that are inevitable in the obedience of Allah. If we consider the life of a believer from this point of view, we shall find that his entire life is the life of endurance and fortitude, for he keeps himself under control in very trying circumstances in this world in the hope of winning the approval of his Lord and in the expectation of gaining permanent benefits in the Hereafter: so, he fights with fortitude every temptation to sin.
- …defend evil with good… - Allah has praised those who respond to evil with good deeds at several places in the Quran, as in:
The good deed and the evil deed cannot be equal. Repel (the evil) with one which is better, then verily! he, between whom and you there was enmity, (will become) as though he was a close friend. But none is granted it (the above quality) except those who are patient, and none is granted it except the owner of the great portion (of the happiness in the Hereafter i.e., Paradise and in this world of a high moral character). [Surah Fussilat 41:34-35]
These will be given their reward twice over, because they are patient, and repel evil with good, and spend (in charity) out of what We have provided them. [Surat al-Qasas 28:54]
Repel evil with that which is better. We are Best-Acquainted with the things they utter. [Surat al-Mu’minun 23:96]
- The Prophet has, likewise, taught us to respond with good deeds to those who are evil to us, as in:
Aisha reported: The Prophet was not indecent, he was not obscene, he would not shout in the markets, and he would not respond to an evil deed with an evil deed, but rather he would pardon and overlook.
Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: No servant is wronged by an oppressor and he forgives him for the sake of Allah except that Allah the Exalted will support him.
Uqbah ibn Amir reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Reconcile with whoever cuts you off, give to whoever deprives you, and turn away from whoever wrongs you.
Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Fulfill the trust of those to whom they are due, and do not be treacherous to the one who betrays you.
Abdullah ibn Amr reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: The one who keeps good relations is not the one who recompenses the good done to him. Rather, the one who keeps good relations is the one who does so despite having been cut off by them.
Umar ibn Al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, said: The one who reconciles is not the one who maintains relations with those who are good to him, for that is merely reciprocation. Rather, the one who reconciles is one who maintains relations with those who cut him off.
- There are many instances in the life of the Prophet in which he would be good to those who were evil to him, as in:
Anas ibn Malik reported: I was walking with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, while he was wearing a Najrani sheet with a thick border. A desert Arab overtook the Prophet and forcibly pulled his clothes. I looked at the shoulder of the Prophet and I saw that the edge of his shirt had left a mark because of the strength of his pull. The man said: O Muhammad, order them to give me something from Allah’s wealth which you have! The Prophet turned and he smiled, then he ordered that he be given charity.
Aisha reported: A group of Jews asked permission to visit the Prophet and when they were admitted they said, “Death be upon you.” I said to them, “Rather, death and the curse of Allah be upon you!” The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: O Aisha, Allah is kind and he loves kindness in all matters.
On another occasion, the Prophet was asked to invoke curses upon the idolaters who were persecuting the Muslims and he refused to do so. Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was told, “O Messenger of Allah, pray against the idolaters!” The Prophet said: Verily, I was not sent to invoke curses, but rather I was only sent as mercy.
Say (O Muhammad, pbuh) to ibadi (My slaves) who have believed, that they should perform As-Salat and spend in charity out of the sustenance We have given them, secretly and openly, before the coming of a Day on which there will be neither mutual bargaining nor befriending.
Surah 14 Ibrahim Verse 31
- Allah says that on the Day of Resurrection, there will be no friendship between friends that might save those deserving punishment from it. Rather, on that Day, there will be fairness and justice. Similarly, no mutual bargaining or ransom will avail anyone, even if he ransom’s himself with earth fill of gold.
We know that your breast is straitened at what they say. So glorify the praises of your Lord and be of those who prostrate themselves (to Him). And worship your Lord until there comes to you the certainty.
Surah 15 Al-Hijr Verses 97-99
- Meaning: We know, O Muhammad that you are distressed by their insults towards you, but do not let that weaken your resolve or cause you to give up conveying the Message of Allah. Put your trust in Him, for He will suffice you and will support you against them. Keep yourself busy with remembering Allah, praising Him, glorifying Him, and worshipping Him
- Narrated Nuaym bin Hammar that he heard the Prophet (pbuh) say: ‘Allah said, “O son of Adam! It is not too difficult for you to perform four Raka’t at the beginning of the day, (and if you do them) I will take care of you until the end of it”’
- Narrated Abu Ma’bad: Ibn Abbas told me “In the lifetime of the Prophet (pbuh) it was the custom to remember Allah (Dhikr) by glorifying, praising and magnifying Allah aloud after the compulsory congregational prayers”. Ibn Abbas further added, “When I heard the Dhikr, I would learn that the compulsory congregational prayer had ended”
- Certainty (Yaqin) refers to:
- Death (Salim bin Abdullah and Ibn Jarir)
- Until unsoundness of mind (deduction from Sahih)
- Narrated Imran bin Husayn that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘Pray standing, and if cannot, then sitting, and if you cannot, then on your side’. From this we may understand that it is a mistake to interpret Yaqin (the certainty) as Ma’rifah (spiritual knowing) as some of the Sufis do. According to them, when someone attains the level of Ma’rifah, they consider him to be free of these obligations. This is disbelief, misguidance and ignorance. The Prophet (pbuh) and their companions were the most knowledgeable people about Allah, about His rights, His attributes, and the glorification that He deserves. But at the same time, they were the people who worshipped Him the most, continuing in good deeds until the time they died. Therefore, what is meant by Yaqin here is death.
- Narrated Anas that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘None of you should long for death because of a calamity that had befallen him; and if he cannot, but long for death, then he should say, “O Allah! Let me live as long as life is better for me, and take my life if death is better for me”’
And as for those who emigrated for the Cause of Allah, after suffering oppression, We will certainly give them goodly residence in this world, but indeed the reward of the Hereafter will be greater, if they but knew! (They are) those who remained patient (in this world for Allah’s sake), and put their trust in their Lord [Allah (Alone)].
Surah 16 An-Nahl Verses 41-42
Whatever is with you, will be exhausted and whatever is with Allah will remain. And those who are patient, We will certainly pay them a reward in proportion to the best of what they used to do.
Surah 16 An-Nahl Verse 96
- ‘those who are patient’ are those who adhere to truth and honesty in utter disregard of all temptations, desires and lusts. They are the ones who endure all losses which accrue to them as a result of strictly confirming themselves to fair and honest means and spurning all advantages which ensue from adopting unfair methods. Such people are prepared to wait till the very end of their worldly life after which they will be able to observe the good consequences of their deeds.
And if you punish (your enemy, O believers!) then punish them with the like of that with which you were afflicted. But if you endure patiently, verily, it is better for As-Sabirun.
Surah 16 An-Nahl Verse 126
Perform As-Salat from mid-day till the darkness of the night and recite the Quran in the early dawn. Verily, the recitation of the Quran in the early dawn is ever witnessed. And in some parts of the night (also) offer the Salat with it as an additional prayer for you. It may be that your Lord will raise you to Maqam Mahmud.
Surah 17 Al-Isra Verses 78-79
- ‘mid day till darkness’ – understood to refer to the times of the prayers Zuhr, Asr, Maghrib and Isha.
- ‘early dawn’ – meaning Salat Al-Fajr
- Narrated Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet (pbuh) said about the Ayah (regarding recitation of Quran in early dawn): ‘It is witnessed by the angels of the night and the angels of the day’
- Narrated Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘The prayer offered in congregation is twenty-five degrees better than the prayer offered individually, and the angels of the night and the angels of the day meet at Salat Al- Fajr’
- ‘additional prayer (Nawafil)’ means the Night Prayer (Tahajjud); it has been made an extra prayer specifically for the Prophet (pbuh). But for other members of his Ummah, offering optional prayers may expiate for whatever sins they commit. The term ‘Tahajjud’ refers to prayer that is offered after sleeping.
- Maqam Mahmud (position of praise and honour) - is the position of intercession
And keep yourself (O Muhammad, pbuh) patiently with those who call on their Lord morning and afternoon, seeking His Face; and let not your eyes overlook them, desiring the pomp and glitter of the life of the world; and obey not him whose heart We have made heedless of Our remembrance, and who follows his own lusts, and whose affairs (deeds) have been lost.
Surah 18 Al-Kahf Verse 28
Then there has succeeded them posterity who have given up As-Salat and have followed lusts. So, they will be thrown in Hell. Except those who repent and believe and work righteousness. Such will enter Paradise and they will not be wronged in aught.
Surah 19 Maryam Verse 59-60
- Posterity – refers to later generations (after the Prophets and those who followed them)
- ‘given up As-Salat’ – by not offering them perfectly or by not offering them in their proper fixed times or by not offering them at all.
- Quran expounds here a general rule: that the corruption in a nation which originally followed a Prophet began the moment that nation abandoned Prayer.
- Repentance – It wipes away that which was before it. In a Hadith, the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘The one who repents from sin is like he who has no sin’
- Lusts – like:
- Drinking alcoholic drinks
- Giving false witnesses
- Eating unlawful things
- Taking intoxicants
- Committing crimes
- Evil wicked deeds like illegal sexual acts, murdering, taking others right unlawfully, robbing, stealing, betraying
- Backbiting, slander, telling lies.
And we (angels) descend not except by the Command of your Lord (O Muhammad, pbuh). To Him belongs what is before us and what is behind us, and what is between those two, and your Lord is never forgetful. Lord of the heavens and the earth, and all that is between them, so worship Him (Alone) and be constant and patient in His worship. Do you know of any who is similar to Him?
Surah 19 Maryam Verses 64-65
‘Verily, I am Allah! La ilaha illa Ana (none has the right to be worshipped but I), so worship Me, and perform As-Salat for My remembrance. Verily, the Hour is coming – and I am almost hiding it – that every person may be rewarded for that which he strives. Therefore, let not the one who believes not therein but follows his own lusts, divert you there from, lest you perish’.
Surah 20 Ta-Ha Verses 14-16
- ‘perform As-Salat for My remembrance’ – this has been held to have two possible meanings:
- “Pray in order to remember Me” – this indicates the main purpose of the Prayer. Prayer is the most potent means of keeping this consciousness (that he is Allah’s servant and that he is not free to do as he pleases) fresh in man’s mind; it enables him to maintain a strong, vibrant relationship with Allah. Prayer weans man away, many times a day, from the ordinary hum-drum existence of daily life; it orients him towards Allah.
- “And establish the prayer whenever you remember Me” – there is a supporting evidence for this in a Hadith recorded by Imam Ahmad from Anas, who said that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘Whenever one of you sleeps past the prayer, or he forgets to pray, then let him pray when he remembers it. For verily, Allah said <and perform As-Salat for my My rememebrance>’. It is also recorded from Anas that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘Whoever slept past the prayer, or forgot it, then his expiation is that he prays it when he remembers it. There is no expiation for it other than that’. On similar lines, Abu-Qatadah reports that when the Prophet (pbuh) was asked by people what they should do if they overslept, the Prophet (pbuh) replied: ‘There is no sin if one is asleep. Sin is incurred when one does not pray while one is awake. If anyone of you forgets (to pray) or is asleep (at the time of prayers) you should offer prayers when you wake up or when you remember’
- The doctrine of the Hereafter is the second most important doctrine in Islam, the doctrine next in importance to monotheism. This is a basic truth revealed to all Prophets in different periods of history, a truth which they were all required to expound. The present verse (addressed to Prophet Moses, pbuh) states both the nature and purpose of this doctrine. The Last Day will come to pass so that man may be recompensed for what he has done. The time of its coming, however, has been kept hidden so as to test people. Those who are, to any extent, concerned with the Hereafter will remain ever fearful lest the Last Day suddenly takes place; this, in itself, is likely to deter them from committing evil. By contrast, those who are fully immersed in worldly pursuits will be inclined to consider the Hereafter a remote possibility.
So, bear patiently (O Muhammad, pbuh) what they say, and glorify the praises of your Lord before the rising of the sun, and before its setting, and during some hours of the night, and at the ends of the day, that you may become pleased.
Surah 20 Ta-Ha Verse 130
- The Verse is an indication of the five compulsory prayers
- ‘become pleased’ – refers to the reward which Allah shall give. In Sahih, it is recorded that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘Allah the Exalted, says, “O People of Paradise” They will reply, “We are at Your service and Your Pleasure our Lord”, He will then say “Are you pleased?” They will reply “Why should we not be pleased our Lord, when You have given us what You have not given to any others of Your creation?” Allah will then say. “Verily, I am going to give you something better than that” They will say “And what thing could be better than that?” Allah will say “I have allowed for you My Pleasure, so I will never be angry with you again after this”
And enjoin As-Salat on your family, and be patient in offering them. We ask not of you a provision; We provide for you. And the good end is for the Muttaqun.
Surah 20 Ta-Ha Verse 132
- The believers are told to enjoin upon their spouse and children not to feel heartbroken at their miserable state; instead, they should be urged regularly to observe prayers. This is likely to change their perspective on life, their values, and the focus of their attentions: a change that will make them satisfied with their lawfully earned livelihood, even if it be meagre. All this will lead them to prefer a virtuous life ensuing from faith and godliness to a life of luxury and self-indulgence arising out of sin, disobedience and excessive worldliness
- ‘We provide for you’ – means that if you establish the prayer, your sustenance will come to you from where you did not expect. Narrated Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘Allah, the Exalted, says “O Son of Adam! Perform My worship and I will fill your chest with wealth and fulfil your needs. If you do not do so, then I will fill your chest with toil and I will not fulfil your needs’
- Narrated Zayd bin Thabit that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘Whoever makes the worldly life his major concern, then Allah will scatter his situation for him (i.e. make it difficult) and his poverty will be placed between his eyes. He will not get from this world anything except that which has already been written for him. Whoever makes the Hereafter his intention, then his situation will be gathered for him (i.e. made easy) and his wealth will be placed in his heart. The worldly life will come to him anyway (in spite of his not seeking it)’
And for every nation We have appointed religious ceremonies, that they may mention the name of Allah over the beast of cattle that He has given them for food. And your ilah (God) is One Ilah (Allah), so you must submit to Him alone. And (O Muhammad, pbuh) give glad tidings to the Mukhbitun, whose hearts are filled with fear when Allah is mentioned, and As-Sabirun, and who perform As-Salat, and who spend out of what We have provided for them.
Surah 22 Al-Hajj Verses 34-35
- Two points are emphasised about sacrifice in the Verse:
- Sacrifice has always been an integral part of the system of worship in all versions of Divine Law
- Sacrifice should truly be made for the sake of Allah rather than for the legal minutiae of the act
- ‘Mukhbitun’ – it embraces the following:
- To eschew arrogance and vanity and humble oneself before Allah
- To feel gratified at serving Allah
- To find contentment in their faith; and
- To feel satisfied and accept whatever Allah has decreed
Successful indeed are the believers. Those who offer their Salat with all solemnity and full submissiveness. And those who turn away from Al-Laghw. And those who observe Zakat. And those who guard their chastity…Those who are faithfully true to their Amanat and to their covenants. And those who strictly guard their Salawat. These are indeed the inheritors.
Surah 23 Al-Muminun Verses 1-5 / 8-10
- ‘solemnity and full submissiveness’ (khashi’un): the true meaning of the root word ‘khushu’ is to lower oneself before someone, to be submissive, to display humility. However, the state called ‘khushu’ is related both to the heart and to the outward condition of one’s bodily organs. The khushu of the heart consists in man’s feeling of being overwhelmed by someone’s awe, grandeur and majesty. As for the khushu of the bodily organs, it manifests itself in a number of ways, as in:
- One’s head is lowered in the presence
- The organs of the body are loosened
- One’s gaze is downcast
- One speaks in subdued voice
In the context of Prayer, khushu is only attained by the one who has emptied his heart totally, who does not pay attention to anything else besides it, and who prefers it above all else. It is reported in a Hadith that the Prophet (pbuh) once observed someone playing with his beard during prayer. On this he said: ‘Had his heart been in a state of humility (before Allah) the organs of his body would have also been in a state of humility’
- The word Laghw signifies all that is useless, irrelevant and fruitless. All things, be they words of the mouth or actions of the body, which have no utility, which lead to no beneficial results, which are neither genuinely needed nor serve any useful purpose fall under the purview of laghw. The thrust of the Verse is that the believers do not concern themselves with things that are vain and frivolous. They even abstain from approaching places where people are engaged in frivolous things let alone directly participate in them. If they come face to face with frivolities, they simply move away and scrupulously pass them by; and if they are confronted with them, they remain detached and withdrawn. A true believer looks at his being in the world as though he were in an examination hall where he is taking a test. Like the serious minded student he is also conscious that the small time granted to him is extremely crucial for his future career. He, therefore, utilizes each and every second so that he might give his best possible performance. Without wasting a single moment, a believer spends all time available to him on pursuits which produce beneficial results. Even in selecting his leisure activities, he chooses those that eventually produce better results.
- It would appear important that in this verse whilst describing the attributes of believers, the Quran departs from the usual usage yu’tun al-zakah, ‘they pay zakah’, and employs the unusual expression li al-zakat fa’ilun, ‘they observe zakah’. In Arabic, Zakah signifies two things – purity and growth. When this word is employed in the Islamic context, it applies to:
- The amount of wealth that is given away in order to achieve purification; and
The striving to purify oneself
‘observing Zakah’, thus, is a wide ranging concept according to which the process of purification is not confined to the life of an individual, but extends to the the lives of all those amidst whom we live.
- ‘guarding chastity’ – means believers are not unfettered in the exercise of their sexual urges. Islam prohibits all forms of sexual relations (except with wives and female slaves in one’s possession). These words not only prohibit sexual relations with all those women who do not fall into the above two categories, but also prohibits such relations with all males as also with animals. The only form of sexual gratification about which there is some disagreement among jurists is masturbation. Ahmad bin Hanbal regarded it as lawful while Malik and Shafii consider it totally forbidden. The Hanafi School whilst looking upon it as an unlawful act is of the view that if someone is overpowered by sexual passion to commit such an act occasionally rather than habitually, Allah may pardon him
- The word Amanat (trusts) encompasses all types of trust which either Allah or society or an individual places in someone else’s charge. As for covenant (‘ahd; pledge), it embraces all covenants between man and Allah, man and man, and one nation and another. One of the distinguishing characteristics of a believer is that he never betrays a trust and never goes back on his committed word. In his sermons, the Prophet (pbuh) often used to say: ‘He who is not true to his trust is devoid of faith, and he who does not keep to is commitment is devoid of religiosity’
- ‘Salawat’ – signifies each single, individual prayer. Thus, guarding the salawat means that believers safeguard:
- Appointed time of the prayer
- All rituals of which prayer is composed of
- The cleanliness of their bodies and clothes
- Proper ablution
- Due concentration and equanimity of all acts related to prayers
- Consciousness of recitation during prayers; and
- Proper bowings and prostrations
- Allah begins and ends this list of praiseworthy qualities with Salah, which is indicative of its virtue, as the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘Adhere to righteousness, you will never be able to encompass it all. Know that the best of your deeds is Salah. None will preserve his Wudu except the believer’
Verily! There was a party of My slaves, who used to say: “Our Lord! We believe, so forgive us, and have mercy on us, for You are the Best of all who show mercy!” But you (the disbelievers) took them for a laughing stock, so much so that they made you forget My Remembrance while you used to laugh at them! Verily! I have rewarded them this Day for their patience, they are indeed the ones that are successful.
Surah 23 Al-Muminun Verses 109-111
In houses which Allah has ordered to be raised, in them His name is remembered. Therein, glorify Him in the mornings and in the afternoons or the evenings. Men whom neither trade nor sale diverts from the rememberance of Allah, nor from performing As-Salat, nor from giving the Zakat. They fear a Day when hearts and eyes will be overturned. That Allah may reward them according to the best of their deeds, and add even more for them out of His Grace. And Allah provides without measure to whom He Wills.
Surah 24 An-Nur Verses 36-38
- ‘houses’ – some commentators of the Quran interpret the word ‘houses’ to mean mosques. Accordingly, they interpret the words ‘enjoined to be raised’ to mean constructing mosques and holding them in high esteem, kept clean of any filth, idle talks or words or deeds that are inappropriate. Other commentators, however, consider these words to mean the houses of believers. As for the expression ‘to be raised’ this suggests that these houses are morally elevated
- Narrated Uthman bin Affan that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘Whoever builds a Masjid seeking the Face of Allah, Allah will build for him something similar to it in Paradise’ Narrated Anas that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘The Hour will not come until people show off in building Masjids’
- Narrated Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘If you see someone buying or selling in the Masjid, say to him, “May Allah never make your business profitable!” And if you see someone calling out about lost property, say, “May Allah never return it to you!”
- The Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘A man’s prayer in congregation is twenty-five times better than his prayer in his house or the market place. That is because if he performs Wudu and does it well, then he goes out to the Masjid, and for no other purpose than to pray, he does not take one step but he increases in one level in status and one sin is removed. When he prays, the angels continue sending blessings on him as long as he is in the place where he prays. (they say) “O Allah! Send blessings on him, O Allah! Have mercy on him” And he will remain in a state of prayer as long as he is waiting for the prayer’
And perform As-Salat and give Zakat and obey the Messenger (pbuh) that you may receive mercy (from Allah).
Surah 24 An-Nur Verse 56
These are the verses of the Quran and (it is) a Book (that makes things) clear; a guide and glad tidings for the believers. Those who perform As-Salat and give Zakat and they believe with certainty in the Hereafter.
Surah 27 An-Naml Verses 2-3
- ‘a Book clear’ (Kitab Mubin) means:
- That it expounds its teachings, instructions and commands in clear terms
- That it clearly indicates the difference between truth and falsehood
- That it is also clear that it is evidently the Book of Allah
- Quran (and its Verses), however, provide guidance and give good news only to those who are possessed of the following charecteristics:
- They have faith, which means they accept the invitation of the Quran and Muhammad (pbuh) to believe in One True Allah as their only Lord and as their sole object of worship. They accept Quran as the Book of Allah and recognize the Prophet (pbuh) as the true Prophet and, hence, their guide and leader, and believe in the Afterlife and in their accountability to Allah.
- They not only recognize the truth but are inclined to obey and follow them. The first sign of acceptance of these teachings being the establishment of Salah and paying of Zakah
Those who fulfil these two requirements are guided by the Verses of the Quran to the Straight Path
- Those who do not believe in the Hereafter cannot walk along the path prescribed by the Quran. That is because they are only able to decide about the standards of good and evil in the light of tangible results observable in this world, as opposed to what will ensue in the Hereafter
Recite (O Muhammad, pbuh) what has been revealed to you of the Book (the Quran), and perform As-Salat. Verily, As-Salat prevents from Al-Fahsha and Al-Munkar and the remembering of Allah is greater indeed. And Allah knows what you do.
Surah 29 Al-Ankabut Verse 45
- Prayer has three attributes, and any prayer that contains none of these is not truly prayer:
- Being done purely and sincerely for Allah alone (Ikhlas);
- Fear of Allah; and
- Remembrance of Allah
Ikhlas makes a person do good deeds, fear prevents him from doing evil deeds, and the remembrance of Allah is the Quran which contains commands & prohibitions. Praying is part of the remembrance of Allah which is greater.
- One can only derive strength from reciting the Quran when one correctly comprehends its teachings and when one’s heart and soul absorb them. A Hadith states about a group of people who used to recite the Quran: ‘They will recite the Quran while it will not go beyond their throats. They will go out of the fold of faith as an arrow goes out of the bowstring’. If one’s mind, heart, character and conduct are not transformed after reciting the Quran, and one still persists in doing what Quran forbids, this is not a true believers’ recitation of the Quran. The Prophet (pbuh) characterized such people in these terms: ‘He who treats the prohibitions of the Quran as lawful does not (truly) believe in the Quran’. Such a person is even more guilty than he who does not recite the Quran. For the person who believes the Quran to be a book of Allah but who then violates its directives after becoming acquainted with them, as a result of reading the Quran, is like a criminal who violates the law not out of ignorance, but with full knowledge of what he is doing. The Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘The Quran is a witness either for you or against you’
- The merit of Prayer outlined in this Verse viz that it forbids indecency (Al-Fahsha) and evil (Al-Munkar), has two aspects:
- Its essential characteristic, whereby it prevents man from indecency and evil. What could be more effective than summoning man five times a day to remember Allah and to refresh in him the fact that he has no right to act with unfettered freedom for he is the servant of an All-Knowing Allah, One who is aware even of the desires and intentions that lie hidden in his heart
- Its required characteristic, whereby he who observes Prayer should actually desist from all acts of indecency and evil. Narrated Ibn Abbas that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘Anyone whose Prayer does not forbid him from indecency and evil (is a prayer that) further removes from Allah’. Several traditions of similar import say: ‘If one wants to ascertain whether one’s prayer has been accepted by Allah or not, one should assess how far one has abstained from indecency and evil. If one has stopped committing evil under the influence of Prayer, one’s Prayer has been accepted’
- ‘remembering of Allah is greater indeed’ may be interpreted variously:
- Allah’s remembrance, that is Prayer, is greater and of much higher value than merely it’s potential to prevent acts of indecency and evil. Observance of Prayer also prompts one to do good and excel others in so doing.
- Remembrance of Allah is an act of great intrinsic merit; it is in fact, the best of deeds. Man cannot do anything better than engage in Allah’s remembrance.
- Allah’s remembrance of man is of an even higher value than man’s remembrance of Allah. The idea of Allah remembering man occurs in the Quran (V 2:152). When Allah’s servant remembers Him, He too remembers His servant.
- (Subtle interpretation offered by Abu-al-Darda’s wife) remembrance of Allah does not consist only of Prayer. Its range is very wide. As one observes fasting or pays Zakah or does any other good act, he is in fact remembering Allah. Likewise, when anyone avoids evil, he is prompted to do so by his remembrance of Allah. Thus, remembrance of Allah embraces every aspect of a believers’ life.
And those who believe (in the Oneness of Allah Islamic Monotheism) and do righteous good deeds, to them We shall surely give lofty dwellings in Paradise, underneath which rivers flow, to live therein forever. Excellent is the reward of the workers. Those who are patient, and put their trust (only) in their Lord (Allah).
Surah 29 Al-Ankabut Verses 58-59
So, glorify Allah when you come up to the evening and when you enter the morning. And His are all praise and thanks in the heavens and the earth; and in the afternoon and when you come up to the time when the day begins to decline.
Surah 30 Ar-Rum Verse 17-18
- Ibn Abbas said: these are the five compulsory congregational prayers mentioned in the Quran
And indeed, We have set forth for mankind, in this Quran every kind of parable. But if you (O Muhammad, pbuh) bring to them any sign or proof (as evidence for the truth of your Prophethood), the disbelievers are sure to say (to the believers): “You follow nothing but falsehood, and magic”. Thus does Allah seal up the hearts of those who know not. So be patient (O Muhammad, pbuh). Verily, the Promise of Allah is true, and let not those who have no certainty of faith, discourage you from conveying Allah’s Message (which you are obliged to convey).
Surah 30 Ar-Rum Verses 58-60
Say (O Muhammad, pbuh): ‘O My slaves who believe, be afraid of your Lord and keep your duty to Him. Good is (the reward) for those who do good in this world, and Allah’s earth is spacious! Only those who are patient shall receive their reward in full, without reckoning’.
Surah 39 Az-Zumar Verse 10
- ‘without reckoning’ – meaning, the reward will not be weighed and measured, they will be given an immense reward
So be patient (O Muhammad, pbuh). Verily, the Promise of Allah is true and ask forgiveness for your fault, and glorify the praises of your Lord in the Ashi and in the Ibkar.
Surah 40 Ghafir Verse 55
- The allusion here is to the Allah’s promise made in V 40:51:
“Verily We will indeed make victorious Our Messengers and those who believe, in this world’s life and on the Day when the witnesses will stand forth” (V 40:51)
- Ashi – means:
- the time period after the midnoon till sunset;
- at the end of the day and the beginning of the night
- Ibkar means:
- The time period from early morning or sunrise till before midnoon;
- At the beginning of the day and the end of the night
- It is said that Ashi and Ibkar refers to:
- The times of five compulsory congregational Salat; or
- The time of the Fajr and Asr prayers.
- It is also admitted to mean that one should continually remember Allah (glorifying His praises)
The good deed and the evil deed cannot be equal. Repel (the evil) with one which is better, then verily he, between whom and you there was enmity, (will become) as though he was a close friend. But none is granted it (the above quality) except those who are patient- and none is granted it except the owner of the great portion (of happiness in the Hereafter i.e., Paradise, and of a high moral character) in this world.
Surah 41 Fussilat Verses 34-35
- Allah commands the believers to be patient when they feel angry, to be forbearing when confronted with ignorance, and to forgive when they are mistreated. If they do this, Allah will save them from the Shaytan and subdue their enemies to them until they become like close friends. The rider, however, is that no one accepts this advice and works according to it except for those who can be patient in doing so, for it is difficult for people to do.
And indeed, whosoever takes revenge after he has suffered wrong, for such there is no way (of blame) against them. The way (of blame) is only against those who oppress men and wrongly rebel in the earth, for such there will be a painful torment. And verily, whosoever shows patience and forgives that would truly be from the things recommended by Allah
Surah 42 Ash-Shura Verses 41-43
And surely, We shall try you till We test those who strive hard (for the Cause of Allah) and the patient ones, and We shall test your facts (i.e. the one who is a liar, and the one who is truthful).
Surah 47 Muhammad Verse 31
So, bear with patience (O Muhammad, pbuh) all that they say, and glorify the Praises of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before (its) setting. And during a part of the night (also) glorify His Praises and (so likewise) after the prayers.
Surah 50 Qaf Verses 39-40
- There were two prayers prior to the Isra journey – one before the rising of the sun at dawn and the other before sunset in the evening. Qiyam Al Layl, prayer at night, was a command for the Prophet and his followers for sometime but it was later abrogated for the Ummah. Later during the Isra journey, Allah abrogated all of the previous orders for prayer by ordaining five daily prayers, including the prayers of Fajr before sunrise, and Asr in the afternoon.
- ‘a part of the night’ – refers to Maghrib and Isha prayers and other nawafils
- ‘after the prayers’ – refers to:
- Tasbih
- Two rakah after the Maghrib Prayer
- Remembrance of Allah
And verily, for those who do wrong, there is another punishment (i.e., the torment in this world and in their graves) before this (the punishment in the Hereafter), but most of them know not. So, wait patiently (O Muhammad, pbuh) for the Decision of your Lord, for verily, you are under Our Eyes, and glorify the Praises of your Lord when you get up from sleep. And in the night-time, also glorify His Praises, and at the setting of the stars.
Surah 52 At-Tur Verses 47-49
O you who believe! When the call is proclaimed for the Salat on Friday (Jumuah Prayer), hasten to the remembrance of Allah and leave off business. That is better for you if you did but know! Then when the Salat is ended, you may disperse through the land and seek the bounty of Allah (by working), and remember Allah much, that you may be successful.
Surah 62 Al-Jumuah Verses 9-10
- Friday is called Al-Jumuah because it is derived from Al-Jam, literally, gathering. The people of Islam gather weekly, on every Friday, in the major places of worship. The significance of the day can be had from the following:
- It was during Friday when Allah finished the creation (the sixth day, during which Allah created the heavens and the earth)
- During Friday, Allah created Adam (pbuh) and he was placed in paradise, and ironically, it was a Friday when he was taken out of Paradise.
- It will be on a Friday when the Last Hour will commence
There is an hour during Friday, wherein no faithful servant asks Allah for something good, but Allah will give him what he asked for.
All this is based upon Hadiths in the authentic collections. It is a fact that previous nations were informed about Friday but they were led astray from it. The Jews chose Saturday for their holy day. The Christians chose Sunday, which is the day the creation was initiated.
- ‘hasten (Sa’y)’ – here refers not to walking quickly. It only refers to the importance of it – about the hearts, the intention, and the submission. As for walking in haste to the prayer, that was indeed prohibited, since Abu Hurayrah narrates that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘When you hear the Iqamah, proceed to offer the prayer with calmness and solemnity and do not rush. And pray whatever you catch, and complete whatever you have missed’
- Narrated Jabir that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘Within every seven days, every Muslim man has the obligation to perform Ghusl at least one day, the day of Jumuah’
- It is recommended that one cleans his body, perform Ghusl, wear his best clothes, applies perfume and uses Siwak (toothstick) for Jumuah. Narrated Aishah, that the Prophet (pbuh) said (on seeing people wearing Nimar garments): ‘When one of you has wealth, he should keep two garments for Friday, other than the two garments he has for his daily wear’
- ‘when the call is proclaimed’ – refers to the Adhan that precedes the Khutbah
- ‘and leave off business’ – the scholars of Islam agree, it is prohibited for Muslims to engage in business transaction after the second Adhan
(Remember) the Day when the Shin shall be laid bare (i.e., the Day of Resurrection) and they shall be called to prostrate themselves (to Allah) but they shall not be able to do so. Their eyes will be cast down and ignominy will cover them; they used to be called (call for congregational prayer in mosque) to prostrate themselves (offer prayers), while they were healthy and good (in the life of the world, but they did not come to the mosque).
Surah 68 Al-Qalam Verses 42-43
- Narrated Abu Sai’d Al Khudri that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘Our Lord will reveal His shin, and every believing male and female will prostrate to Him. The only people who will remain standing are those who prostrated in the worldly life only to be seen and heard (showing off). This type of person will try to prostrate at that time, but his back will be made to be one stiff plate (the bone will not bend or flex)’
- Commentators of the Quran believe this verse is about the hypocrites and the disbelievers.
A questioner asked concerning a torment about to befall; Upon the disbelievers, which none can avert; From Allah, the Lord of the ways of ascent. The angels and the Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years; So be patient (O Muhammad, pbuh), with a good patience. Verily! They see it (the torment) afar off; But We see it (quite) near.
Surah 70 Al-Maarij Verses 1-7
- We see it near - The people, because of their narrow and restricted outlook, measure the time of Allah’s decrees by their own scales of time and, therefore, consider a hundred years or so to be a very lengthy period, whereas in the divine conduct of affairs there are schemes spreading over a thousand years each, or fifty thousand years each, as you reckon, and this measure also is only by way of example; otherwise schemes in the universe may extend over millions and billions of years as well. Of these one is the scheme under which mankind has been created on the earth, and a time limit has been set during which it has been allowed to function here. No man can know when this scheme began, what time-limit has been decreed for its completion, what hour has been appointed for bringing it to an end, when Resurrection will take place, and what time has been fixed for raising all men, born since the beginning of creation till Resurrection, from death simultaneously and calling them to account for their deeds. We only know to some extent that part of the scheme which is passing before us, or a partial history of the past ages which exists with us. As for its beginning and end, to say nothing of knowing it, we do not even have the power to understand it, not to speak of understanding the wisdom which works behind and underlies it. Now the people who demand that the scheme be cut short and its conclusion be brought immediately before them, and if this is not done, they use it for an argument to prove that the universe has no end and conclusion. They, in fact, present a proof of their own ignorance and folly.
Verily, man was created very impatient. Irritable (discontented) when evil touches him; and niggardly when good touches him. Except those who are devoted to Salat. Those who remain constant in their Salat. And those in whose wealth there is a recognized right, for the beggar who asks, and for the unlucky who has lost his property and wealth. And those who believe in the Day of Recompense. And those who fear the torment of their Lord…And those who guard their chastity…And those who keep their trusts and covenants. And those who stand firm in their testimonies. And those who guard their Salat well. Such shall dwell in the Gardens honoured.
Surah 70 Al-Ma’arij Verses 19-27/29/32-35
- Narrated Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘The worst thing that can be in a man is greedy impatience and unrestrained cowardice’
- ‘constant in their Salat’ – the Arabic term used is Daimu’n. It has been said that it means that they guard its times and the elements obligatory in it. It has also been said that it means tranquillity and humble concentration (in prayer). From its meaning is the same terminology used to describe (still) water (Al-Ma’Ad-Dai’m). This proves the obligation of having tranquillity in prayer. For verily, the one who does not have tranquillity (stillness of posture) in his bowing and prostrating, then he is not being constant (Dai’m) in his prayer. It has also been said that the meaning refers to those who perform a deed and are constant in its performance and consistent in it. Narrated Aishah, that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘The most beloved deeds to Allah are those that are most consistent, even if they are few’
- Allah begins the discussion (in this ayah) about the believers attributes with prayer and He concludes it with prayer. This proves the importance of it and the praise of its noble status
And be patient (O Muhammad, pbuh) with what they say, and keep away from them in a good way. And leave Me alone to deal with the deniers, those who are in possession of good things of life. And give them respite for a little while.
Surah 73 Al-Muzammil Verses 10-11
Verily, the Abrar (pious, who fear Allah and avoid evil), shall drink a cup (of wine) mixed with water from a spring in Paradise called Kafoor. A spring wherefrom the slaves of Allah will drink, causing it to gush forth abundantly. They (are those who) fulfill (their) vows, and they fear a Day whose evil will be wide-spreading. And they give food, inspite of their love for it (or for the love of Him), to Miskin (poor), the orphan, and the captive, (Saying): “We feed you seeking Allah’s Countenance only. We wish for no reward, nor thanks from you. Verily, We fear from our Lord a Day, hard and distressful, that will make the faces look horrible (from extreme dislikeness to it)”. So, Allah saved them from the evil of that Day, and gave them Nadratan (a light of beauty) and joy. And their recompense shall be Paradise, and silken garments, because they were patient.
Surah 76 Al-Insan Verses 5-12
Woe that Day to the deniers (of the Day of Resurrection)! And when it is said to them: “Bow down yourselves (in prayer)!” they bow not down.
Surah 77 Al-Mursalat Verse 47-48
Indeed, whosoever purifies himself shall achieve success; And remembers (glorifies) the Name of his Lord, and prays.
Surah 87 Al-A’la Verses 14-15
- ‘purifies’ signifies abandoning unbelief and polytheism, embracing faith, adorning one’s conduct with good deeds while giving up evil.
- ‘success’ does not refer to one’s affluence in this world. The allusion is to one’s abiding success in the Hereafter.
- Not only does a true believer remember Allah, he also demonstrates his belief by offering prayers. His prayer betokens his readiness to obey Allah all the time.
Verily, We have created man in Kabad. Does he think that none can overcome him? He says (boastfully): ‘I have wasted wealth in abundance!’ Does he think that none sees him? Have We not made for him two eyes, and a tongue and two lips? And shown him the two ways (good and evil). But he has not attempted to pass on the path that is steep. And what will make you know the path that is steep? (It is) freeing a neck (slave); or giving food in a day of hunger (famine) to an orphan near of kin, or to a miskin (needy) cleaving to dust (out of misery). Then he became one of those who believed and recommended one another to perseverance and patience, and (also) recommended one another to pity and compassion. They are those on the Right Hand (i.e., dwellers of Paradise).
Surah 90 Al-Balad Verses 4-18
- ‘Kabad’ – means:
- While in hardship
- In hardship and seeking livelihood
- In hardship and long suffering
- In difficulty
- Enduring the hardships of the world by life (toil) and the severity of the Hereafter
The verse conveys that this world is essentially not a place of fun and frolic; instead here man has to pass through rigours of toil and hardship, something which no human being can escape. Even an enviable person was quite vulnerable in his mother’s womb and at the time of delivery and also as an infant. Even through life one is susceptible to risks all the time. A king is under constant threat of dethronement; a General fears dissidence in his ranks whereas a rich person also constantly strives to increase and protect his wealth. As man has been created in toil and hardship, he cannot have a peaceful, totally comfortable life.
- ‘none can overcome him’ – does man, notwithstanding his constant vulnerability, think that he is free to do what pleases him? A change of fortune turns tycoons into pauper. Not only individuals but also communities undergo downfall and disgrace, though they once enjoyed might and glory. Man should not, therefore, entertain the deception that he is not accountable.
- The boastful squanders wealth spent not on needs but only for showing off, not for any good cause. Squandering of wealth can involve wasting money on:
- Marriage and funeral rites
- Through lavish feasts
- Gambling
- Shopping in fairs
- Competing with other wealthy people
- Feeding people on an unlimited scale (for fame)
- Allah has favoured man with knowledge and reason. The two eyes here signify the faculty of discernment. On drawing upon his rational power man could easily perceive the divine signs scattered around him. Likewise, the tongue and the lips do not stand for faculty of speech, they also signify his ability to observe and articulate faith. Allah has not left man on his own, after having invested him with the mental faculties. Instead, He has imparted him guidance showing him the two roads of good and evil. It is up to man to make a careful choice as to which way he goes.
- ‘path that is steep’ – refers to the path which contains salvation and taxing. The path involves generosity and belief.
- ‘recommended one another to pity and compassion’ – Muslims are to be kind and compassionate towards the whole of mankind. A Hadith states: ‘The merciful people will be treated with mercy by the Most Merciful (Allah). Be merciful to those who are on the earth and He Who is above the heavens will be merciful to you’. In another Hadith: ‘Allah will not be merciful with whoever is not merciful with the people’. Narrated Abdullah bin Amr that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘Whoever does not show mercy to our children, nor does he recognize the right of our elders, then he is not of us’
Verily, along with every hardship is relief. Verily, along with every hardship is relief. So, when you have finished (your occupation), devote yourself to Allah’s worship. And to your Lord (alone) turn (all your) intentions and hopes.
Surah 94 Ash-Sharh Verses 5-8
- In a Hadith, it is stated that: ‘There is no Prayer when the food is served, nor when the two foul things (excrement and urine) are pressing a person’ The Prophet (pbuh) also said: ‘When the Prayer has started and the dinner has been served, then begin with dinner’
Verily, man is in loss; Except those who believe and do righteous good deeds, and recommend one another to truth and recommend one another to patience.
Surah 103 Al-Asr Verses 2-3
- ‘loss’ – Arabic word used is Khusr, which represents loss, as opposed to profit. However, the Quranic concept of success is not a synonym for worldly prosperity and riches. Rather it embraces abiding success in both worlds. By the same token, Quranic loss embraces total loss in both worlds. Interestingly, many times, one’s loss in this world may result in success in the Hereafter.
- Only those possessing the following four traits are safe from the loss:
- Faith: this includes the verbal testimony of faith as well as ones true conviction in Islamic Monotheism
- Righteous deeds: one’s good deeds must follow from faith and in accordance with Shariah and done solely for the purpose of gaining the Good Pleasure of Allah
- Recommending one another to truth: truth conveys in the main these two ideas:
- Something that is sound, correct and in accord with justice and equity, be it related to articles of faith or worldly affairs
Something that one is obliged to perform
The reference is to one’s obligations to Allah, to one’s fellow human beings and to one’s own self. The exhortation of believers to one another regarding truth thus means that they should not silently watch the rise of falsehood in their midst; rather they should stand against it. Accordingly, enjoining good and forbidding evil (Al Maruf Al Munkar) is prescribed as one of the duties of the Muslim community.
- Recommending one another to patience: the believers should patiently bear all troubles and hardships they encounter in adhering to and supporting truth. Patience is also required to bear plots, the evils, and the harms of those who harm people due to their commanding them to do good and forbidding them from evil
Have you seen him who denies Ad Din? That is he who repulses the orphan. And urges not on the feeding of Al-Miskin. So, woe to those performers of Salat. Those who with their Salah are Sahun. Those who do good only to be seen (of men). And withhold Al-Maun.
Surah 107 Al-Maun Verses 1-7
- Ad Din – here refers to the Hereafter, the Recompense and the Final Reward
- ‘sahun’ – this refers to:
- Hypocrites who pray in public but do not pray in private
- People who pray and adhere to the prayer yet they are mindless of it
- Not performing prayer in its stipulated time that has been legislated by Islam.
- Not fulfilling its pillars and conditions
- Not performing it with humility and contemplation of its meanings
Whoever has any characteristic of this then a portion of the Ayah applies to him. And whoever has all of these, then he has completed his share of this Ayah, and the hypocrisy of actions is fulfilled in him
- In a Sahih the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘This is the prayer of the hypocrite. This is the prayer of the hypocrite. This is the prayer of the hypocrite. He sits watching the sun until it is between the two horns of the Shaytan. Then he stands and pecks four (Rakahs) and he does not remember Allah (in them) except very little’
- ‘those who do good only to be seen’ – narrated Abu Yazid (on the authority of Abdullah bin Amr) that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘Whoever tries to make the people hear of his deed, Allah, the One who hears His creation, will hear it and make him despised and degraded’
- Maun – it is used to mean small, common items of daily use (like pots, axes, scales, salt, water etc which people borrow from one another in daily life). It is also interpreted to mean Zakah; in a sense Zakah carries the same meaning – a small amount of one’s riches is given to help the poor. Ibn Abi Hatim said that the highest degree of Maun is Zakah, while it’s lowest is to lend a pot or a needle or thread to someone. Denying Maun out of miserliness is bad manners. For people do return them intact. The abiding message of the Surah is that the rejection of the Hereafter degrades and demeans man so much that he is not willing to do even a small favour to help his fellow human beings
