Remembrance (of Allah)
Therefore remember Me. I will remember you and be grateful to Me and never be ungrateful to Me.
Surah 2 Al-Baqarah Verse 152
- Allah means ‘remember Me regarding what I have commanded you and I will remember you regarding what I have compelled Myself to do for your benefit (i.e., His rewards and forgiveness)’
Those who remember Allah standing, sitting, and lying down on their sides, and think deeply about the creation of the heavens and the earth (saying): ‘Our Lord! You have not created this without purpose, glory to You! Give us salvation from the torment of the Fire’.
Surah 3 Al-Imran Verse 191
And remember your Lord within yourself, humbly and with fear and without loudness in words, in the mornings and in the afternoons, and be not of those who are neglectful.
Surah 7 Al-A’raf Verse 205
Those who believed, and whose hearts find rest in the remembrance of Allah, verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest. Those who believed, and work righteousness, Tuba is for them a beautiful place of (final) return.
Surah 13 Ar-Ra’d Verses 28-29
- Narrated Abu Musa that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘The example of the one who remembers (glorifies the praises of) his Lord, in comparison to the one who does not remember his Lord, is that of a living creature compared to a dead one’
- Tuba means:
- Happiness and comfort or refreshment of the eye (Ibn Abbas)
- How excellent is what they earned (Ikrimah)
- A joy for them (Ad-Dahak)
- You have earned a good thing (Qatadah)
- Narrated Abu Said-Al Khudri, a man asked “O Allah’s Messesnger! Tuba for those who saw you and believed in you!” The Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘Tuba is for he who saw me and believed in me. Tuba, and another tuba, and another tuba for he who believed in me but did not see me’
- A man asked, “What is Tuba?”, The Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘A tree in Paradise whose width is a hundred years and the clothes of the people of Paradise are taken from its bark’
And keep yourself (O Muhammad, pbuh) patiently with those who call on their Lord morning and afternoon, seeking His Face; and let not your eyes overlook them, desiring the pomp and glitter of the life of the world; and obey not him whose heart We have made heedless of Our remembrance, and who follows his own lusts, and whose affairs (deeds) have been lost.
Surah 18 Al-Kahf Verse 28
‘Verily, I am Allah! La ilaha illa Ana (none has the right to be worshipped but I), so worship Me, and perform As-Salat for My remembrance. Verily, the Hour is coming – and I am almost hiding it – that every person may be rewarded for that which he strives. Therefore, let not the one who believes not therein but follows his own lusts, divert you there from, lest you perish’.
Surah 20 Ta-Ha Verses 14-16
- ‘perform As-Salat for My remembrance’ – this has been held to have two possible meanings:
- “Pray in order to remember Me” – this indicates the main purpose of the Prayer. Prayer is the most potent means of keeping this consciousness (that he is Allah’s servant and that he is not free to do as he pleases) fresh in man’s mind; it enables him to maintain a strong, vibrant relationship with Allah. Prayer weans man away, many times a day, from the ordinary hum-drum existence of daily life; it orients him towards Allah.
- “And establish the prayer whenever you remember Me” – there is a supporting evidence for this in a Hadith recorded by Imam Ahmad from Anas, who said that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘Whenever one of you sleeps past the prayer, or he forgets to pray, then let him pray when he remembers it. For verily, Allah said <and perform As-Salat for my My rememebrance>’. It is also recorded from Anas that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘Whoever slept past the prayer, or forgot it, then his expiation is that he prays it when he remembers it. There is no expiation for it other than that’. On similar lines, Abu-Qatadah reports that when the Prophet (pbuh) was asked by people what they should do if they overslept, the Prophet (pbuh) replied: ‘There is no sin if one is asleep. Sin is incurred when one does not pray while one is awake. If anyone of you forgets (to pray) or is asleep (at the time of prayers) you should offer prayers when you wake up or when you remember’
- The doctrine of the Hereafter is the second most important doctrine in Islam, the doctrine next in importance to monotheism. This is a basic truth revealed to all Prophets in different periods of history, a truth which they were all required to expound. The present verse (addressed to Prophet Moses, pbuh) states both the nature and purpose of this doctrine. The Last Day will come to pass so that man may be recompensed for what he has done. The time of its coming, however, has been kept hidden so as to test people. Those who are, to any extent, concerned with the Hereafter will remain ever fearful lest the Last Day suddenly takes place; this, in itself, is likely to deter them from committing evil. By contrast, those who are fully immersed in worldly pursuits will be inclined to consider the Hereafter a remote possibility.
Indeed (many) Messengers were mocked before you (O Muhammad, pbuh), but the scoffers were surrounded by that, whereat they used to mock. Say: “Who can guard and protect you in the night or in the day from the (punishment of the) Most Beneficent (Allah)?” Nay, but they turn away from the remembrance of their Lord.
Surah 21 Al-Anbiya Verses 41-42
Verily! There was a party of My slaves, who used to say: “Our Lord! We believe, so forgive us, and have mercy on us, for You are the Best of all who show mercy!” But you took them for a laughing stock, so much so that they made you forget My Remembrance while you used to laugh at them! Verily! I have rewarded them this Day for their patience, they are indeed the ones that are successful.
Surah 23 Al-Muminun Verses 109-111
Men whom neither trade nor sale diverts them from the Remembrance of Allah (with heart and tongue), nor from performing As-Salat (the prayers), nor from giving the Zakat (obligatory charity). They fear a Day when hearts and eyes will be overturned (from the horror of the torment of the Day of Resurrection). That Allah may reward them according to the best of their deeds, and add even more for them out of His Grace. And Allah provides without measure to whom He wills.
Surah 24 An-Nur Verses 37-38
- Here those characteristics have been described which are necessary for the true perception of Allah’s Absolute Light and for benefiting from His bounties. Allah does not bestow His bounties without reason. He bestows them on the deserving ones alone. He only sees this that the recipient has sincere love for Him, stands in awe of Him, seeks His favors and avoids His wrath; he is not lost in material pursuits but in spite of his worldly engagements keeps his heart warm with Allah’s remembrance. Such a person does not rest content with low spiritual levels, but actively endeavors to attain the heights towards which his master may guide him. He does not go for the paltry gains of this transitory world, but has his gaze constantly fixed on the everlasting life of the Hereafter. These are the things which determine whether or not a person should be granted the favor to benefit from Allah’s Light. Then, when Allah is pleased to bestow His bounties, He bestows them without measure; and it will be man’s own incapacity if he does not receive them in full.
Recite (O Muhammad, pbuh) what has been revealed to you of the Book (the Quran), and perform As-Salat. Verily, As-Salat prevents from Al-Fahsha and Al-Munkar and the remembering of Allah is greater indeed. And Allah knows what you do.
Surah 29 Al-Ankabut Verse 45
- Prayer has three attributes, and any prayer that contains none of these is not truly prayer:
- Being done purely and sincerely for Allah alone (Ikhlas);
- Fear of Allah; and
- Remembrance of Allah
Ikhlas makes a person do good deeds, fear prevents him from doing evil deeds, and the remembrance of Allah is the Quran which contains commands & prohibitions. Praying is part of the remembrance of Allah which is greater.
- One can only derive strength from reciting the Quran when one correctly comprehends its teachings and when one’s heart and soul absorb them. A Hadith states about a group of people who used to recite the Quran: ‘They will recite the Quran the while it will not go beyond their throats. They will go out of the fold of faith as an arrow goes out of the bowstring’. If one’s mind, heart, character and conduct are not transformed after reciting the Quran, and one still persists in doing what Quran forbids, this is not a true believers’ recitation of the Quran. The Prophet (pbuh) characterized such people in these terms: ‘He who treats the prohibitions of the Quran as lawful does not (truly) believe in the Quran’. Such a person is even more guilty than he who does not recite the Quran. For the person who believes the Quran to be a book of Allah but who then violates its directives after becoming acquainted with them, as a result of reading the Quran, is like a criminal who violates the law not out of ignorance, but with full knowledge of what he is doing. The Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘The Quran is a witness either for you or against you’
- The merit of Prayer outlined in this Verse viz that it forbids indecency (Al-Fahsha) and evil (Al-Munkar), has two aspects:
- Its essential characteristic, whereby it prevents man from indecency and evil. What could be more effective than summoning man five times a day to remember Allah and to refresh in him the fact that he has no right to act with unfettered freedom for he is the servant of an All-Knowing Allah, One who is aware even of the desires and intentions that lie hidden in his heart
- Its required characteristic, whereby he who observes Prayer should actually desist from all acts of indecency and evil. Naarated Ibn Abbas that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘Anyone whose Prayer does not forbid him from indecency and evil (is a prayer that) further removes from Allah’. Several traditions of similar import say: ‘If one wants to ascertain whether one’s prayer has been accepted by Allah or not, one should assess how far one has abstained from indecency and evil. If one has stopped committing evil under the influence of Prayer, one’s Prayer has been accepted’
- ‘remembering of Allah is greater indeed’ may be interpreted variously:
- Allah’s remembrance, that is Prayer, is greater and of much higher value than merely it’s potential to prevent acts of indecency and evil. Observance of Prayer also prompts one to do good and excel others in so doing.
- Remembrance of Allah is an act of great intrinsic merit; it is in fact, the best of deeds. Man cannot do anything better than engage in Allah’s remembrance.
- Allah’s remembrance of man is of an even higher value than man’s remembrance of Allah. The idea of Allah remembering man occurs in the Quran (V 2:152). When Allah’s servant remembers Him, He too remembers His servant.
- (Subtle interpretation offered by Abu-al-Darda’s wife) remembrance of Allah does not consist only of Prayer. Its range is very wide. As one observes fasting or pays Zakah or does any other good act, he is in fact remembering Allah. Likewise, when anyone avoids evil, he is prompted to do so by his remembrance of Allah. Thus, remembrance of Allah embraces every aspect of a believers’ life.
Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah (Muhammad, pbuh) you have a good example to follow for him who hopes in (the Meeting with) Allah and the Last Day and remembers Allah much.
Surah 33 Al-Ahzab Verse 21
O you who believe! Remember Allah with much remembrance. And glorify His Praises morning and Asila. He it is who sends Salat (His blessings) on you and His Angels too, that He may bring you out from darkness into light. And He is Ever Most Merciful to the believers.
Surah 33 Al-Ahzab Verses 41-43
- Narrated Muadh ibn Anas that someone asked the Prophet (pbuh): “Who will receive the highest reward among those who take part in Jihad?” He replied: ‘He who remembers Allah most’. He was then asked who will receive the highest reward among those who fast. The Prophet (pbuh) gave the same reply. He was also asked the same question as regards those devoted to Prayer, Zakat, Hajj and Charity. On each occasion, the Prophet’s reply was identical: he who remembers Allah most will receive the highest reward.
- While other acts of worship are performed at their prescribed time, Allah’s remembrance envelops his life all the time, connecting him to Allah in servitude in so far as his attention is constantly focussed on Allah and his tongue never tires of mentioning His name.
- Narrated Abdullah bin Amr that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘No people sit together without mentioning Allah, but they will see that as regret on the Day of Resurrection’
- Asila – evening
- Allah’s Salat means that He praises His servants before the Angels (Abu Al-Aliyah). Others said Allah’s Salat means mercy. Salat from the Angels means their supplication and seeking forgiveness for people.
- ‘Ever Most Merciful’ – narrated Umar bin Al Khattab that the Prophet (pbuh) saw a woman among the prisoners of war picking up her child, clasping the child to her breast and nursing him. The Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘Do you think that this woman would throw her child into the fire even though she is able to do so?’ They said “No” The Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘By Allah, Allah is more merciful towards His servants than this woman is to her child’
Is he whose breast Allah has opened to Islam, so that he is in light from His Lord (as he who is a non-Muslim)? So, woe to those whose hearts are hardened against remembrance of Allah! They are in plain error!
Surah 39 Az-Zumar Verse 22
- ‘breast Allah has opened to Islam’ – the reference here is to the person whom Allah enables to grasp the Ayats (signs, evidences) in depth and become firmly persuaded of Islam’s truth.
- ‘light from his Lord’ – refers to such a person’s state of conviction which drives away every doubt and reservation. Neither the fear of any risk nor of any possible loss prevents him from the resolve to recognize and embrace the tuth.
Allah has sent down the best statement, a Book (this Quran), its parts resembling each other in goodness and truth, oft-repeated. The skins of those who fear their Lord shiver from it (when they recite it or hear it). Then their skin and their heart soften to the remembrance of Allah. That is the guidance of Allah. He Guides therewith whom He pleases and whomever Allah sends astray, for him there is no guide.
Surah 39 Az-Zumar Verse 23
It is He, Who shows you His Ayat (proofs, evidences, signs) and sends down provision for you from the sky. And none remembers but those who turn (to Allah) in obedience and in repentance (by begging His Pardon and by worshipping and obeying Him Alone and none else).
Surah 40 Ghafir Verse 13
And whosoever turns blindly from the remembrance of the Most Gracious (Allah), We appoint for him Shaitan to be a Qarin to him. And verily, they (Satan) hinder them from the path (of Allah) but they think that they are guided aright!
Surah 43 Az-Zukhruf Verses 36-37
- ‘Qarin’ – refers to companion
- Remembrance (Dhikr-al-Rahman) has a wide-ranging significance. Apart from its literal meaning, it also signifies exhortation from Allah as well as the Quran
On the Day when Allah will resurrect them all together (for their account), then they will swear to Him as they swear to you (O Muslims). And they think that they have something (to stand upon). Verily, they are liars! Shaitan (Satan) has overtaken them. So, he has made them forget the remembrance of Allah. They are the party of Shaitan (Satan). Verily, it is the party of Shaitan (Satan) that will be the losers!
Surah 58 Al-Mujadilah Verses 18-19
O you who believe (Muslims)! When the call is proclaimed for the Salat (prayer) on the day of Friday (Jumuah prayer), come to the remembrance of Allah [Jumuah religious talk (Khutbah) and Salat (prayer)] and leave off business (and every other thing), that is better for you if you did but know!
Surah 62 Al-Jumuah Verse 9
O you who believe! Let not your properties or your children divert you from the remembrance of Allah. And whosoever does that, then they are the losers.
Surah 63 Al-Munafiqun Verse 9
- The mention of the possessions and the children, in particular, has been made for man mostly turns away from the demands of the faith for the sake of their well being and interests and becomes involved in hypocrisy, weakness of faith, or wickedness and disobedience; otherwise, it implies everything of the world that allures and absorbs man so completely that he becomes heedless of the remembrance of God. This heedlessness in respect of the remembrance of God is indeed the root cause of all evil. If man only remembers that he is not free but the servant of One God, and that God is fully aware of all his actions and deeds, and he will be held accountable one day before Him for all his actions and deeds, he would never be involved in any deviation and wickedness, and if ever he commits an error due to a human weakness, he will immediately rectify it as soon as he comes to realize his wrongdoing and repent.
- It is true that worldly possessions and children are Divine Bounties to the extent that one makes use of them in Allah's Cause and attaining to happiness. However, they are regarded as the worst afflictions when excessive affection for them impedes man from treading the Path to the Truth.
Indeed, whosoever purifies himself shall achieve success; And remembers (glorifies) the Name of his Lord, and prays.
Surah 87 Al-A’la Verses 14-15
- ‘Purifies’ signifies abandoning unbelief and polytheism, embracing faith, adorning one’s conduct with good deeds while giving up evil.
- ‘Success’ does not refer to one’s affluence in this world. The allusion is to one’s abiding success in the Hereafter.
- Not only does a true believer remember Allah, he also demonstrates his belief by offering prayers. His prayer betokens his readiness to obey Allah all the time.
Nay! When the earth is ground to powder; And your Lord comes with the angels in rows; And Hell will be brought near that Day. On that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance (then) avail him? He will say: “Alas! Would that I had sent forth (good deeds) for (this) my life!” So, on that Day, none will punish as He will punish. And none will bind as He will bind.
Surah 89 Al-Fajr Verses 21-26
- …man will remember… - The words in the original can have two meanings:
(1) That on that Day man will remember whatever he had done in the world and will regret, but what will remembrance and regretting avail him then.
(2) That on that Day man will take heed and accept admonition: he will realize that whatever he had been told by the Prophets was true and he committed a folly when he did not listen to them; but what will taking heed and accepting the admonition and realizing one’s errors avail then.
