Volume I · PART II

Rivals (to Allah)

O mankind! Worship your Lord (Allah), Who created you and those who were before you so that you may become Al-Muttaqun (the pious); Who has made the earth a resting place for you, and the sky as a canopy, and sent down water (rain) from the sky and brought forth therewith fruits as a provision for you. Then do not set up rivals unto Allah (in worship) while you know (that He Alone has the right to be worshipped).

Surah 2 Al-Baqarah Verses 21-22

And of mankind are some who take (for worship) others besides Allah as rivals. They love them as they love Allah. But those who believe love Allah more (than anything else). If only those who do wrong could see the torment, that all power belongs to Allah and that Allah is severe in punishment.

Surah 2 Al-Baqarah Verse 165

Furthermore, there are certain rights which Allah alone may claim, as in:

In the same way, being the only Absolute Sovereign of the Universe, it befits none save Allah to lay down what is permitted and what is prohibited for His subjects, to prescribe their rights and duties, to command them what to do and what not to do, to direct them as to how the energy and resources bestowed on them, by Allah, should be expended.

Again, it is Allah alone Who can ask His subjects to acknowledge His Sovereignty, to accept His commands, to consider Him alone to be the lord entitled to command men, and to turn to Him alone for correct guidance.

Whoever either ascribes to any being other than Allah any of the aforementioned attributes or recognizes the claim of anyone save Allah to be entitled to any of the above-mentioned rights over His creatures, is in fact, setting up that being as a rival to Allah, and placing him on the same plane as Allah. By the same token, any individual or institution claiming to possess any of the exclusive attributes and rights of Allah is in fact, claiming a position parallel and equal to that of Allah even though the claim to godhead may not have been categorically spelled out.

Verily Allah forgives not that partners should be set up with Him, but He forgives except that (anything else) to whom He wills; and whoever sets up partners with Allah in worship, he has indeed invented a tremendous sin.

Surah 4 An-Nisa Verse 48

Verily Allah forgives not setting up partners with Him, but He forgives whom He wills, sins other than that, and whoever sets up partners in worship with Allah, has indeed strayed far away.

Surah 4 An-Nisa Verse 116

Say (O Muhammad, pbuh, to mankind): ‘How do you worship besides Allah something which has no power either to harm or benefit you? But it is Allah who is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower’.

Surah 5 Al-Mai’dah Verse 76

It is those who believe and confuse not their Belief with Zulm, for them (only) there is security and they are the guided.

Surah 6 Al-An’am Verse 82

Yet, they join the jinns as partners in worship with Allah, though He has created them (the jinns), and they attribute falsely without knowledge sons and daughters to Him. Be He Glorified and Exalted above (all) that they attribute to Him.

Surah 6 Al-Anam Verse 100

Do they attribute as partners to Allah those who created nothing but they themselves are created? No help can they give them, nor can they help themselves. And if you call them to guidance, they follow you not. It is the same for you whether you call them or you keep silent. Verily, those whom you call upon besides Allah are slaves like you. So, call upon them and let them answer you if you are truthful. Have they feet wherewith they walk? Or have they hands wherewith they hold? Or have they eyes wherewith they see? Or have they ears wherewith they hear? Say (O Muhammad, pbuh): “Call your (so-called) partners (of Allah) and then plot against me, and give me no respite! Verily, my Wali (Protector, Supporter, Helper) is Allah Who has revealed the Book (the Quran), and He protects (supports and helps) the righteous. And those whom you call upon besides Him (Allah) cannot help you nor can they help themselves”. And if you call them to guidance, they hear not and you will see them looking at you, yet they see not.

Surah 7 Al-Araf Verses 191-198

No doubt! Verily, to Allah belongs whosoever is in the heavens and whosoever is in the earth. And those who worship and invoke others besides Allah, in fact they follow not the (Allah’s so-called) partners, they follow only a conjecture and they only invent lies.

Surah 10 Yunus Verse 66

a. The mushriks base their search entirely and solely on superstition.

b. The hermits and ascetics pretend and claim that they acquire that knowledge by means of contemplation and meditation and see the reality by peeping into the hidden. But the fact is that they do not see the reality; it is only a trick of their own imagination. They form a mental image and then concentrate their mind on it and eventually it takes the shape of the so-called reality.

c. The philosophers claim to base their research on rationalism but it is really only surmise and guesswork, even though they may give logical arguments and sound reasons in its support.

d. Then there are the scientists: though they follow the scientific method of research in the physical world, they abandon it completely in regards to their investigation into metaphysics and start to follow conjectures, surmises, and guesswork.

Then these groups invariably suffer from prejudices and are not inclined to understand the point of view of those who differ with them, and, therefore, obstinately stick to their own theories. In this Verse, the Quran declares that this way of search after knowledge is basically wrong, as if to say: The real cause of your deviation is that you base your search of reality on mere surmise and guesswork, and then, because of your prejudices, refuse to listen even to reasonable things. The result is that you have not only failed to arrive at the truth but also to judge rightly the revealed religion, presented by the Messengers. In contrast to the above ways of research, the Quran presents its own way and asserts that it alone is the correct, rational and scientific way of arriving at the truth. It is this: The prerequisite for research is that you should give up your preconceived prejudices and listen to the Message of those who claim that their information about the reality is based on knowledge and not on surmises, guessworks, meditations and contemplations, abstract deductions etc. Then consider deeply the signs in the universe to which the Quran invites your attention. If these also point to the reality they claim to reveal, then there is no reason why should you deny the truth taught by those Messengers. This is the basis of the philosophy of Islam.

And Shaitan (Satan) will say when the matter has been decided: ‘Verily, Allah promised you a promise of truth. And I too promised you, but I betrayed you. I had no authority over you except that I called you, and you responded to me. So, blame me not, but blame yourself. I cannot help you, nor can you help me. I deny your former act in associating me (Satan) as a partner with Allah. Verily, there is a painful torment for the Zalimun (polytheists and wrongdoers)’.

Surah 14 Ibrahim Verse 22

‘They took their rabbis and their monks to be their lords besides Allah…’ Surah 9 At-Tawbah Verse 31

‘And so to many of the Mushrikun their (Allah’s so called) partners have made fair seeming the killing of their children, in order to lead them to their own destruction and cause confusion in their religion…’ Surah 6 Al-An’am Verse 137

‘Have you seen him who has taken as his ilah (god) his own vain desire?…’ Surah 25 Al-Furqan Verse 43

‘Or have they partners (with Allah- false gods) who have instituted for them a religion which Allah has not ordained?...’ Surah 42 Ash-Shura Verse 21

All these examples illustrate that polytheism does not merely assume one form viz associating others with Allah in matters of belief. There is also another form which consists of exalting someone to a position where it becomes imperative to follow him without any sanction for it from Allah, or even in opposition to Allah’s command. Such an act, according to the Quran, is tantamount to setting up a partner to Allah in His godhead

Have you not seen those who have changed the Blessings of Allah into disbelief (by denying Prophet Muhammad, pbuh, and his Message of Islam), and caused their people to dwell in the house of destruction? - Hell, in which they will burn - and what an evil place to settle in! And they set up rivals to Allah, to mislead (men) from His Path! Say: “Enjoy (your brief life)! But certainly, your destination is the (Hell) Fire!”

Surah 14 Ibrahim Verses 28-30

And they worship others besides Allah, such as do not and cannot own any provision for them from the heavens or the earth.

Surah 16 An-Nahl Verse 73

Had there been therein (in the heavens and the earth) gods besides Allah, then verily both would have been ruined. Glorified be Allah, the Lord of the Throne, (High is He) above what they attribute to Him!

Surah 21 Al-Anbiya Verse 22

The fact is again mentioned in the Quran in Surah Al-Isra Verse 42:

Say (O Muhammad, pbuh, to the disbelievers): “If there had been other aliha (gods) along with Him as they assert, then they would certainly have sought out a way to the Lord of the Throne”.

This is because if there had been more than one partners in Godhead, it would produce one of the two results: (1) If they were all independent gods, it was not conceivable that they would agree and cooperate with one another in the management of the boundless universe and there could never have been unanimity, uniformity and balanced proportion in its functioning. There would have been conflict at every step and everyone would have tried to dominate others in order to become its sole master. or (2) if one of them had been the supreme god and the others his obedient servants whom he had delegated some of his powers, then, according to the maxim “power corrupts”, they would never have been content with remaining obedient servants of the supreme god and would have conspired to become the supreme god themselves.

O mankind! A similitude has been coined, so listen to it (carefully): Verily! Those on whom you call besides Allah, cannot create (even) a fly, even though they combine together for the purpose. And if the fly snatched away a thing from them, they would have no power to release it from the fly. So weak are (both) the seeker and the sought.

Surah 22 Al-Haj Verse 73

He sets forth for you a parable from your ownselves - Do you have partners among those whom your right hands possess (i.e your slaves) to share as equals in the wealth We have bestowed on you? Whom you fear as you fear each other? Thus, do We explain the signs in detail to a people who have sense.

Surah 30 Ar-Rum Verse 28

(On the Day of Judgement) Those who were deemed weak will say to those who were arrogant: “Nay, but it was your plotting by night and day, when you ordered us to disbelieve in Allah and set up rivals to Him!” And each of them (parties) will conceal their own regrets (for disobeying Allah during this worldly life), when they behold the torment. And We shall put iron collars round the necks of those who disbelieved. Are they requited aught except what they used to do?

Surah 34 Saba Verse 33

And when some hurt touches man, he cries to his Lord (Allah Alone), turning to Him in repentance, but when He bestows a favour upon him from Himself, he forgets that for which he cried for before, and he sets up rivals to Allah, in order to mislead others from His Path. Say: “Take pleasure in your disbelief for a while: surely, you are (one) of the dwellers of the Fire!”

Surah 39 Az-Zumar Verse 8

Say (O Muhammad, pbuh): “Verily, I am commanded to worship Allah (Alone) by obeying Him and doing religious deeds sincerely for Allah’s sake only and not to show off, and not to set up rivals with Him in worship” … Say (O Muhammad, pbuh) “Allah Alone I worship by doing religious deeds sincerely for His sake only and not to show-off, and not to set up rivals with Him in worship”.

Surah 39 Az-Zumar Verses 11/14

Allah puts forth a similitude: a (slave) man belonging to many partners (like those who worship others along with Allah) disputing with one another, and a (slave) man belonging entirely to one master, (like those who worship Allah Alone). Are those two equals in comparison? All the praises and thanks be to Allah! But most of them know not.

Surah 39 Az-Zumar Verse 29

Say (O Muhammad, pbuh): “I have been forbidden to worship those whom you worship besides Allah, since there have come to me evidences from my Lord, and I am commanded to submit (in Islam) to the Lord of the Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists)”.

Surah 40 Ghafir Verse 66

END OF CHAPTER
