Trust and Justice
Allah bears witness that La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), and the angels, and those having knowledge (also give this witness); (He is always) maintaining His creation in Justice. La ilah illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), the All-Mighty, the All-Wise.
Surah 3 Al-Imran Verse 18
These are the Ayat of Allah. We recite them to you (O Muhammad, pbuh) in truth, and Allah wills no injustice to the Alamin (mankind, jinn and all that exists).
Surah 3 Al-Imran Verse 108
- ‘Ayat’ – meaning, the verses of Allah, His proofs and signs
- ‘in truth’ – making known the true reality of this world and the Hereafter
- Since Allah does not want to subject His creation to any wrong He illuminates the Straight Path of their salvation and forewarns them of the matters for which they will be asked to render an account in the Hereafter. It is clear that if people abandon the path of rectitude they wrong none but themselves
If Allah helps you, none can overcome you and if He forsakes you, who is there after Him that can help you? And in Allah (alone) let believers put their trust.
Surah 3 Al-Imran Verse 160
Verily, Allah commands that you should render back the trusts to those to whom they are due; and that when you judge between men, you judge with justice. Verily, how excellent is the teaching which He gives you! Truly, Allah is Ever All-Hearer, All-Seer.
Surah 4 An-Nisa Verse 58
- The command about rendering trust refers to all things that one is expected to look after, such as Allah’s rights on His servants: praying, zakah, fasting, and penalties for sins, vows and so forth. The command also includes the rights of the servants on each other, such as what they entrust each other with, including the cases that are not recorded or documented. Allah commands that all types of trusts be fulfilled. Those who do not do so, in this life, it will be extracted from them on the Day of Resurrection. The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said: ‘The rights will be rendered back to those to whom they are due, and even the sheep that does not have horns will take revenge from the horned sheep’
- The ayah about justice was revealed about those in authority. A Hadith states: ‘Allah is with the judge as long as he does not commit injustice, for when he does, Allah will make him reliant on himself’
And argue not on behalf of those who deceive themselves. Verily, Allah does not like anyone who is a betrayer of his trust, and indulges in crime.
Surah 4 An-Nisa Verse 107
- …who deceive themselves.. - Whoever commits a breach of trust with others in fact commits a breach of trust with his own self first. For the powers of his head and heart have been placed at his disposal as a trust, and by misusing them he is forcing those powers to support him in acts which involve a breach of trust. In doing so the person concerned suppresses his conscience, which Allah has placed as a sentinel over his moral conduct, with the result that it is rendered incapable of preventing him from acts of wrong and iniquity. It is only after a man has already carried out this cruel suppression of conscience within himself that he is able to commit acts of sin and iniquity outwardly.
O you who believe! Stand out firmly for justice, as witnesses to Allah, even though it be against yourselves, or your parents, or your kin, be he rich or poor, Allah is a better protector to both. So, follow not the lusts (of your heart), lest you avoid justice; and if you distort your witness or refuse to give it, verily, Allah is ever Well-Acquainted with what you do.
Surah 4 An-Nisa Verse 135
- ‘Witnesses to Allah’ means that testimony should be delivered precisely, for the sake of Allah, thus making it correct, truly just, and free of alterations, changes or deletions
- One should not favour someone (in ones testimony) because he is rich, or feel pity for him because he is poor, for Allah is their caretaker, a better protector of them than you, and has better knowledge of what is good for them (in the long run).
- The Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘The best witness is he who discloses his testimony before being asked to do so’
- Believers are supposed not merely to practise justice in their own dealings but to strive for its triumph. They have to do all within their power to ensure that injustice is eradicated and replaced by equity and justice.
O you who believe! Stand out firmly for Allah as just witnesses; and let not the enmity and hatred of others make you avoid justice. Be just: that is nearer to piety; and fear Allah. Verily, Allah is Well-Acquainted with what you do.
Surah 5 Al-Maidah Verse 8
(The hypocrites and the Jews like to) listen to falsehood, to devour anything forbidden. So, if they come to you (O Muhammad, pbuh), either judge between them, or turn away from them. If you turn away from them, they cannot hurt you in the least. And if you judge, judge with justice between them. Verily, Allah loves those who act justly.
Surah 5 Al-Maidah Verse 42
Say (O Muhammad, pbuh): ‘My Lord has commanded justice and that you should face Him only, in every place of worship, in prayers, and invoke Him only making your religion sincere to Him. As He brought you in the beginning, so shall you be brought into being again’.
Surah 7 Al-A’raf Verse 29
And of those whom We have created, there is a community who guides (others) with the truth, and establishes justice therewith.
Surah 7 Al-Araf Verse 181
- It was reported that this Ayah refers to the Ummah of Muhammad. In the Two Sahihs, it is recorded that Muawiyah bin Abi Sufyan said that the Messenger of Allah said, ‘There will always be a group of my Ummah who are apparent on the Truth, unabated by those who fail or oppose them, until the (Last) Hour commences’.
The believers are only those when Allah is mentioned, feel a fear in their hearts and when His Verses (the Quran) are recited to them, they (the Verses) increase their faith; and they put their trust in their Lord (alone). Who perform As-Salat and spend out of what We have provided for them. It is they who are the believers in truth. For them are grades of dignity with their Lord, and forgiveness and a generous provision (Paradise).
Surah 8 Al-Anfa’l Verses 2-4
- As–Suddi commented: ‘A man might be thinking of committing injustice or a sin. But he abstains when he is told, “Have taqwa of Allah”, and his heart becomes fearful’
- A man’s faith grows as he is able to confirm and submit to the command of Allah which he comes across. This is especially so where he submits to the commands which go against his own personal predilections. A man’s faith attains great heights if instead of trying to twist and distort the commands of Allah and the Prophet (pbuh), he develops the habit of accepting and submitting. For if he hesitates to respond positively to Allah’s command, his faith is diminished. One thus learns that faith is not a static, immobile object; for both faith and disbelief are capable of growth and decline.
- ‘trust in their Lord’ (tawakkul) – the believers hope in none except Allah, direct their dedication to Him alone, seek refuge with Him alone, invoke Him alone for their various needs and supplicate to Him alone. They know whatever He wills occurs and that whatever He does not will never occurs, that He alone is the One Who has the decision in His kingdom, without partners; none can avert the decision of Allah and He is swift in reckoning. Hence the statement of Said bin Jubayr, “Tawakkul of Allah is the essence of faith”
- ‘forgiveness’ – even the best and the most devoted believers are liable to commit lapses. Out of His infinite Mercy, however, Allah overlooks man’s shortcomings as long as he fulfils the basic duties and has correct faith. Had it been a rule that man would be judged strictly on the basis of his deeds, no man however righteous would have escaped punishment.
O you who believe! Betray not Allah and His Messenger (pbuh), nor betray knowingly your Amanat. And know that your possessions and your children are but a trial and that surely with Allah is a mighty reward.
Surah 8 Al-Anfa’l Verses 27-28
- Amanah refers to the actions that Allah has entrusted the servants with, such as and including what He ordained
- ‘trial’ – Allah grants possession and children to you so that He knows which of you will be grateful and obedient to Him, or become busy with and dedicated to them instead of Him.
- Narrated Hudayfah that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘Certainly Al-Amanah descended from the heavens and settled in the roots of hearts of men (faithful believers), and then the Quran was revealed and the people read the Quran (and learnt Al-Amanah from it), and also learnt it from Sunnah’
When the hypocrites and those in whose hearts was a disease (of disbelief) said: “These people (Muslims) are deceived by their religion”. But whoever puts his trust in Allah, then surely, Allah is All-Mighty, All-Wise.
Surah 8 AL-Anfal Verse 49
Say (O Muhammad, pbuh): ‘Nothing shall ever happen to us except what Allah has ordained for us. He is our Maula’. And in Allah let the believers put their trust.
Surah 9 At-Taubah Verse 51
- Narrated Ibn Abbas: Once I was behind the Prophet (pbuh) and he said: ‘O boy, I will teach you a few words:
- Be loyal and obedient to Allah, remember Him always, obey His orders. He will save you from every evil and will take care of you in all the spheres of life.
- Be loyal and obedient to Allah, you will find Him near i.e. He will respond to your requests
- If you ask, ask Allah
- If you seek help, seek help from Allah
- Know that if all the people get together in order to benefit you with something, they will not be able to benefit you in anything except what Allah has decreed for you. And if they all get together in order to harm you with something, they will not be able to harm you in anything except what Allah has decreed for you. The pens have stopped writings (Divine Preordainments). And (the ink over) the papers (Book of Decrees) have dried’
- The verse delineates the difference in the attitude of a man of Allah and a man of the world:
| Determinant | Man of World | Man of Allah |
|---|---|---|
| Means of Satisfaction | Attainment of worldly ends | Desire to please Allah |
| Reaction to out comes | Success – joy knows no bound; Failure – overly dejected |
Success or Failure – remains calm; regards each as a test from Allah. Believes that both are essentially given by Allah, and it is the omnipotent Will of Allah that works in both cases |
| Depends upon | Material circumstances | Allah |
| Yardstick of success | Achieving worldly riches/power | Achieving the good pleasure of Allah. |
| Measurement of success | Quantum of riches/power gathered/ influence achieved | Quantum of extent to which he was able to devote his life and resources in Allah’s Cause. Success in this world immaterial for he is convinced of the recompense in the Hereafter |
| Places his trust in | Himself and his strengths and resources | Allah alone, the Lord of all resources |
- That is the reason why Allah directs the believers in the verse to tell the hypocrites, that the basic attitude of the believers is altogether different from theirs. The two groups also entertain different notions as to what causes happiness and grief
To Him is the return of all of you. The Promise of Allah is true. It is He Who begins the creation and then will repeat it, that He may reward with justice those who believed (in the Oneness of Allah - Islamic Monotheism) and did deeds of righteousness. But those who disbelieved will have a drink of boiling fluids and painful torment because they used to disbelieve.
Surah 10 Yunus Verse 4
- The reason why Allah will again bring the whole mankind to life is to reward the believers and to punish the disbelievers. After showing that this is possible to raise the dead, it is stated that it is absolutely necessary to fulfill the demands of common sense and justice, for full justice cannot be done without this. Common sense and justice demand that those who believe and do righteous deeds should be given their full rewards, and those who disbelieve and reject the truth and do evil deeds, should be duly punished. As every sensible and just person knows that this demand of justice is not fulfilled in its entirety, and cannot be fulfilled, in this world. It is absolutely essential that the entire mankind should again be brought to life for this purpose.
And for every Ummah (a community or a nation), there is a Messenger; when their Messenger comes, the matter will be judged between them with justice, and they will not be wronged.
Surah 10 Yunus Verse 47
- Here the word ummah does not merely mean a nation or a community but includes all those people whom the message of a Messenger reaches after his appointment, even though he may not be alive among them. More than this: as long as his teachings remain intact and within the reach of everyone to ascertain what they really are, all such people will be treated and judged as his ummat and their cases decided with justice in accordance with (Ayat 47). According to this standard, all the people of the world are the ummat of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), and will remain so, as long as the Quran continues to be published in its original and complete form as today. That is why it has not been said, ‘There is a Messenger in every ummah’ but ‘There is a Messenger for every ummat’.
- When the message of a Messenger reaches a people, they should know that henceforth they are on trial and that no excuse would be accepted that they were ignorant of it. Then judgment is passed on them with scrupulous justice. Those, who accept the message and mend their way in accordance with it, are declared to be worthy of Allah’s blessings, and those who reject it are doomed to a torment that may be inflicted both in this world and in the next world or only in the Hereafter.
And if every person who had wronged (by disbelieving in Allah and by worshipping others besides Allah), possessed all that is on earth, and sought to ransom himself therewith (it will not be accepted), and they would feel in their hearts regret when they see the torment, and they will be judged with justice, and no wrong will be done unto them.
Surah 10 Yunus Verse 54
And Musa (Moses) said: “O my people! If you have believed in Allah, then put your trust in Him if you are Muslims (those who submit to Allahs Will)”. They said: “In Allah we put our trust. Our Lord! Make us not a trial for the folk who are Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doing) (i.e., do not make them overpower us). And save us by Your Mercy from the disbelieving folk”.
Surah 10 Yunus Verses 84-86
[Prophet Shuaib said] “And O my people! Give full measure and weight in justice and reduce not the things that are due to the people, and do not commit mischief in the land, causing corruption. That which is left by Allah for you (after giving the rights of the people) is better for you, if you are believers. And I am not set over you as a guardian”.
Surah 11 Hud Verses 85-86
And to Allah belongs the Ghaib (unseen) of the heavens and the earth, and to Him return all affairs (for decision). So, worship Him (O Muhammad, pbuh) and put your trust in Him. And your Lord is not unaware of what you (people) do.
Surah 11 Hud Verse 123
Thus, have We sent you (O Muhammad, pbuh) to a community before whom other communities have passed away, in order that you might recite unto them what We have inspired to you, while they disbelieve in the Most Beneficient (Allah) Say: “He is my Lord! La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He)! In Him is my trust, and to Him will be my return with repentance”.
Surah 13 Ar-Rad Verse 30
Their Messengers said to them (the people of Nuh, Ad, Thamud): ‘We are no more than human beings like you, but Allah bestows His Grace to whom He wills of His slaves. It is not ours to bring you an authority (proof) except by the permission of Allah. And in Allah (alone) let the believers put their trust. And why should we not put our trust in Allah while He indeed has guided us in our ways? And we shall certainly bear with patience all the hurt you may cause us, and in Allah (alone) let those who trust, put their trust’.
Surah 14 Ibrahim Verses 11-12
And as for those who emigrated for the Cause of Allah, after suffering oppression, We will certainly give them goodly residence in this world, but indeed the reward of the Hereafter will be greater, if they but knew! (They are) those who remained patient (in this world for Allah’s sake), and put their trust in their Lord (Allah Alone).
Surah 16 An-Nahl Verses 41-42
So, when you want to recite the Quran, seek refuge with Allah from Shaitan (Satan), the outcast (the cursed one). Verily! He has no power over those who believe and put their trust only in their Lord (Allah). His power is only over those who obey and follow him (Satan), and those who join partners with Him (Allah).
Surah 16 An-Nahl Verses 98-100
And the Book (ones Record) will be placed (in the right hand for a believer in the Oneness of Allah, and in the left hand for a disbeliever in the Oneness of Allah), and you will see the Mujrimun (criminals, polytheists, sinners), fearful of that which is (recorded) therein. They will say: “Woe to us! What sort of Book is this that leaves neither a small thing nor a big thing, but has recorded it with numbers!” And they will find all that they did, placed before them, and your Lord treats no one with injustice.
Surah 18 Al-Kahf Verse 49
And We shall set up Balances of Justice on the Day of Resurrection, then none will be dealt with unjustly in anything. And if there be the weight of a mustard seed, We will bring it. And sufficient are We to take account.
Surah 21 Al-Anbiya Verse 47
- The majority of the scholars state that it is one Balance, and the plural form is used here to reflect the large number of deeds which will be weighed therein.
- Narrated Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘Two words which are light on the tongue, heavy in the Balance and beloved to Ar-Rahman: “Subhan Allahi Wa bi hamdihi, Subhan Allahil Azim (Glory and praise be to Allah, glory be to Allah the Almighty)”’
- Narrated Aishah that one of the Companions of the Prophet (pbuh) sat down before him and said, “O Messenger of Allah, I have two slaves who lie to me, betray me and disobey me, and I hit them and insult them. How do I stand with regard to them?” The Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘The extent to which they betrayed you, disobeyed you lied to you will be measured against the punishment you meted out to them. If your punishment was commensurate with their misconduct, then you will be equal and you will not have anything counted for you or against you. If your punishment of them was less than that what they deserved for their misconduct, then this will count in your favour. If your punishment of them was more than that what they deserved for their misconduct, then Allah will take what is due to them from you’. Then the man started to weep before the Prophet (pbuh) and the Prophet asked: ‘What is the matter with him? Has he not read the words of Allah (this verse)’ The man said “O Messenger of Allah, I think there is nothing better than keeping away from these people (meaning his slaves), I call upon you to bear witness that they are all free”
And put your trust (O Muhammad, pbuh) in the Ever Living One Who dies not, and glorify His praises, and sufficient is He as the All-Knower of the sins of His slaves.
Surah 25 Al-Furqan Verse 58
And those who believe (in the Oneness of Allah Islamic Monotheism) and do righteous good deeds, to them We shall surely give lofty dwellings in Paradise, underneath which rivers flow, to live therein forever. Excellent is the reward of the workers. Those who are patient, and put their trust (only) in their Lord (Allah).
Surah 29 Al-Ankabut Verses 58-59
Truly, We did offer Al-Amanah to the heavens and the earth and the mountains, but they declined to bear it and were afraid of it. But man bore it. Verily, he was unjust (to himself) and ignorant (of its results).
Surah 33 Al-Ahzab Verse 72
- Al-Amanah means:
- Obedience
- Al-Faraid (the obligatory duties)
- Religion, obligatory duties and prescribed punishments
Thus Al-Amanah refers to the responsibility and the acceptance of commands and prohibitions with their attendant conditions, which is that the one who fulfils this responsibility, will be rewarded; while the one who neglects it, will be punished. Al-Amanah is a trust
- The idea that the task of bearing Al-Amanah is crushingly heavy is conveyed through description of heavens and the earth which, notwithstanding their massiveness, shrank from accepting it. It was man who shouldered this burdensome task in spite of his infirmities and weaknesses.
- Narrated Abdullah bin Amr that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘There are four things, if you attain them, then whatever you miss in this world will not matter: preserving trust, speaking the truth, being of good character and moderation in eating’
- Unjust and ignorant refers to man underestimating the command of Allah. He accepted this offer in the hope of attaining the highest position in Allah’s Dominion. He was willing to face risks to which he was exposed in the hope of winning great rewards.
…Say: ‘Sufficient for me is Allah; in Him those who trust must put their trust’.
Surah 39 Az-Zumur Verse 38
- Narrated Ibn Abbas that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘He who desires to be the most powerful among men should repose his trust in Allah. He who desires to be the richest should have greater trust in what is in Allah’s possession than in what he himself possesses. Likewise, he who desires to be the most respected man, should fear Almighty Allah’
- Narrated Ibn Abbas that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘Seventy thousand people of my followers will enter Paradise without account, and they are those who do not practice Ar-Ruqyah and do not see an evil omen in things, and put their trust in their Lord’ [Ar-Ruqyah: (Incantation) Divine speech recited as a means of curing disease. (It is a kind of treatment i.e. to recite Surah Al-Fatihah or any other Surah of the Quran and then blow one’s breath with saliva over a sick person’s part)]
And in whatsoever you differ, the decision thereof is with Allah (He is the ruling Judge). (And say O Muhammad, pbuh, to these polytheists:) Such is Allah, my Lord in Whom I put my trust, and to Him I turn in all of my affairs and in repentance.
Surah 42 Ash-Shura Verse 10
- These are two verbs one of which is in the past tense and the other in the present which contains the sense of perpetuity. In the past verb it was said: In Whom did I put my trust, i.e. I decided once and for all that as long as I live, I have to rely on His help, on His guidance, on His support and protection, and on His decision. Then in the present verb it was said: To Whom I turn, i.e., whatever situation I face in life, I turn only to Allah in it. I do not look towards others in an affliction or trouble or difficulty but invoke only Him for help. I seek only His refuge when I face a danger and depend on His protection. I turn to Him for guidance whenever I am confronted by a problem and seek its solution in His teaching and guidance. And I look up only to Him when I have a dispute with somebody with the belief that He alone will give the final decision, and have the faith that whatever decision He gives will be the right one.
So, whatever you have been given is but (a passing) enjoyment for this worldly life, but that which is with Allah (Paradise) is better and more lasting for those who believe and put their trust in their Lord.
Surah 42 Ash-Shura Verse 36
- ‘enjoyment for this worldly life’ – intended not to puff man up with pride and cause him to exult. Thus, no matter how abundant the riches of the world available to a person, they are still meagre and transient
- ‘for those who believe’ – means, for those who are patient in forgoing the pleasures of this world; and do not give preference to that which is transient over that which is lasting
- To put their trust in Allah is stated here as an essential requisite of faith as well as a necessary condition of success in the Hereafter. Putting trust in Allah means:
- That one should completely confide in Allah’s Guidance and be fully cognizant that knowledge about reality, the principles of morality, the prescribed limits of what is lawful and what is unlawful, and the rules laid down to order and regulate human life are based on truth and leads to man’s success and felicity.
- Instead of trusting one’s own ability and competence and resources or of any others, one should rely on Allah and be fully persuaded of the truth that success depends wholly upon Allah’s help and support (which one can earn only by observing Allah’s laws and by keeping one’s eyes firmly fixed on seeking Allah’s pleasure and working within the limits laid down by Him); and
- One should have firm faith in Allah’s promises made to those who believe and do good and devote themselves to the cause of truth rather than falsehood. While reposing faith in these promises, believers should spurn any gain which might accrue from following the wrong paths. By the same token, they should patiently bear all losses and hardships which they have to face in consequence of upholding the truth. Without such trust in Allah, one cannot obtain the glorious rewards which Allah has promised to believers
And the Heaven He has raised high, and He has set up the Balance. In order that you may not transgress balance. And observe the weight with equity and do not make the balance deficient.
Surah 55 Ar-Rahman Verses 7-9
Indeed, We have sent Our Messenger with clear proofs, and revealed with them the Scripture and the Balance that mankind may keep up justice….
Surah 57 Al-Hadid Verse 25
- ‘Balance’ – (Mizan) It means justice, according to Mujahid and Qatadah
- ‘keep up justice’ – truth and fairness that is found in the obedience of the Messengers, in all that they conveyed from their Lord, and following all they commanded. Surely, what the Prophets brought forth is the truth, beyond which there is no truth
Secret counsels (conspiracies) are only from Shaitan (Satan), in order that he may cause grief to the believers. But he cannot harm them in the least, except as Allah permits, and in Allah let the believers put their trust.
Surah 58 Al-Mujadilah Verse 10
Allah does not forbid you to deal justly and kindly with those who fought not against you on account of religion, nor drove you out of your homes. Verily, Allah loves those who deal with equity. It is only with regards those who fought against you on account of religion, and have driven you out of your homes, and helped to drive you out, that Allah forbids you to befriend them. And whosoever will befriend them, then such are the Zalimun.
Surah 60 Al-Mumtahanah Verses 8-9
- ‘who deal with equity’ – narrated Abdullah bin Amr that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘Verily, those who are equitable in this life, will be on podiums made of pearls before Ar-Rahman, the Exalted and Most Honoured, on account of their fairness in life’. Another Hadith states: ‘The just, who are fair, in their decisions, families and those under their authority will be on podiums made of light, to the right of the Throne’
No calamity befalls, but by the leave of Allah, and whosoever believes in Allah, He guides his heart. And Allah is All-Knower of everything. Obey Allah and obey the Messenger (Muhammad, pbuh); but if you turn away, then the duty of Our Messenger is only to convey clearly – Allah! La ilaha illa huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He). And in Allah (alone) therefore let the believers put their trust.
Surah 64 At-Taghabun Verses 11-13
- ‘leave’ – Decision and Qadar (Divine Pre-Ordainment); from his Decree and Will
- ‘He guides his heart’ – Ibn Abbas said about this: “Allah will guide his heart to certainty. Therefore, he will know that what reached him would not have missed him and what has missed him would not have reached him”. Whoever suffered an affliction and he knew that it occurred by Allah’s judgement and decree, and he patiently abides, awaiting Allah’s reward, then Allah guides his heart, and will compensate him for his loss in this life by granting guidance to his heart and certainty in Faith. Allah will replace whatever he lost for Him with the same or what is better
…And whosoever fears Allah and keeps his duty to Him, He will make a way for him to get out (from every difficulty). And He will provide him from (sources) he never could imagine. And whosoever puts his trust in Allah, then He will suffice him. Verily, Allah will accomplish His purpose. Indeed, Allah has set a measure for all things.
Surah 65 At-Talaq Verses 2-3
- Ibn Abi Hatim recorded that Abdullah bin Masud said: “The greatest Ayah in the Quran that contains relief is, And whosoever has Taqwa of Allah, He will make a way for him to get out”.
Say (O Muhammad, pbuh): ‘He is the Most Gracious (Allah), in Him we believe, and in Him we put our trust. So, you will come to know who is it that is in manifest error’.
Surah 67 Al-Mulk Verse 29
Woe to Al-Mutaffifun. Those who, when they have to receive by measure from men, demand full measure. And when they have to give by measure or weight to (other) men, give less than due. Do they not think that they will be resurrected, on a Great Day?
Surah 83 Al-Mutaffifin Verse 1-5
- The word mutaffifun is derived from tatfif, a word used for an inferior and base thing in Arabic. Terminologically, tatfif is used for giving short weight and short measure fraudulently; for the person who acts thus while measuring or weighing, does not defraud another by any substantial amount, but skimps small amounts from what is due to every customer cleverly, and the poor customer does not know of what and of how much he is being deprived by the seller.
- At several places in the Quran, giving of short measure and weight has been condemned and measuring fully and weighing rightly has been stressed.
… and give full measure and full weight with justice. We burden not any person, but that which he can bear. … [Al-Anam Verse 152]
And give full measure when you measure, and weigh with a balance that is straight. That is good (advantageous) and better in the end. [Al-Isra Verse 35]
And observe the weight with equity and do not make the balance deficient. [Ar-Rahman Verse 9]
The people of the Prophet Shuaib were punished for the reason that the evil of giving short measure and weight had become widespread among them and in spite of his counsel and advice they did not refrain from it.
Then as for him whose Balance (of good deeds) will be heavy; he will live a pleasant life (in Paradise); But as for him whose Balance (of good deeds) will be light; he will have his home in Hawiyah.
Surah 101 Al-Qariah Verse 6-9
- The word mawazin may be the plural of mawzun or mizan. In the former sense, it stands for such deeds as carry some weight in Allah’s reckoning and may fetch some reward. Taken in its later sense, it refers to the ends of a scale. In other words, the scales of the righteous will weigh heavier and of the evil, lighter. Allah recognizes only good deeds as weighty. The scales will be heavier or lighter in proportion to one’s good and bad deeds
- ‘his home in Hawiyah’ – Literally, the verse reads as: “His mother will be Hawiyah”. Hell is branded as Hawiyah for being a deep pit into which the inmates of Hell will be hurled. As for using the word ‘mother’ in this context, it underscores that hell alone will be like the mother’s lap for the unbelievers in the Hereafter.
