Volume II

Giving Thanks / Being Grateful

  1. THE DEFINING VERSES (meaning of giving thanks or being grateful to Allah)

And Allah has already made you victorious at Badr, when you were a weak little force. So, fear Allah much (abstain from all kinds of sins and evil deeds which He has forbidden and love Allah much, perform all kinds of good deeds which He has ordained) that you may be grateful.

Surah 3 Al-Imran Verse 123

Muhammad (pbuh) is no more than a Messenger, and indeed (many) Messengers have passed away before him. If he dies or is killed, will you then turn back on your heels (as disbelievers)? And he who turns back on his heels, not the least harm will he do to Allah, and Allah will give reward to those who are grateful.

Surah 3 Al-Imran Verse 144

Why should Allah punish you if you have thanked (Him) and have believed in Him. And Allah is Ever All-Appreciative (of good), All-Knowing.

Surah 4 An-Nisa Verse 147

And turn not away those who invoke their Lord, morning and afternoon seeking His Face. You are accountable for them in nothing, and they are accountable for you in nothing, that you may turn them away, and thus become of the Zalimun (unjust). Thus, We have tried some of them with others, that they might say: “Is it these (poor believers) that Allah has favoured from amongst us?” Does not Allah know best those who are grateful?

Surah 6 Al-Anam Verses 52-53

[Iblees (Satan)] said: “Because You have sent me astray, surely I will sit in wait against them (human beings) on Your Straight Path. Then I will come to them from before them and behind them, from their right and from their left, and You will not find most of them as thankful ones (i.e., they will not be dutiful to You)”.

Surah 7 Al-Araf Verses 16-17

Say (O Muhammad, pbuh, to these polytheists): “Tell me, what provision Allah has sent down to you! And you have made of it lawful and unlawful”. Say (O Muhammad, pbuh): “Has Allah permitted you (to do so), or do you invent a lie against Allah?” And what think those who invent lies against Allah, on the Day of Resurrection? (i.e., Do they think that they will be forgiven and excused! Nay, they will have an eternal punishment in the Fire of Hell). Truly, Allah is full of Bounty to mankind, but most of them are ungrateful.

Surah 10 Yunus Verse 59-60

And if We give man a taste of Mercy from Us, and then withdraw it from him, verily! He is despairing, ungrateful. But if We let him taste good (favour) after evil (poverty and harm) has touched him, he is sure to say: “Ills have departed from me”. Surely, he is exultant, and boastful (ungrateful to Allah).

Surah 11 Hud Verses 9-10

He [Yusuf (Joseph)] said: “No food will come to you (in wakefulness or in dream) as your provision, but I will inform (in wakefulness) its interpretation before it (the food) comes. This is of that which my Lord has taught me. Verily, I have abandoned the religion of a people that believe not in Allah and are disbelievers in the Hereafter (i.e., the Kananyyun of Egypt who were polytheists and used to worship sun and other false deities). And I have followed the religion of my fathers - Ibrahim (Abraham), Ishaq (Isaac) and Yaqub (Jacob) - and never could we attribute any partners whatsoever to Allah. This is from the Grace of Allah to us and to mankind, but most men thank not (i.e., they neither believe in Allah, nor worship Him).

Surah 12 Yusuf Verse 37-38

And (remember) when your Lord proclaimed: “If you give thanks (by accepting Faith and worshipping none but Allah and making right use of the blessings bestowed), I will give you more (of My Blessings), but if you are thankless (i.e., disbelievers and rebel against Our Command), verily! My Punishment is indeed severe”.

Surah 14 Ibrahim Verse 7

Verily, Ibrahim (Abraham) was an Ummah (a leader having all the good righteous qualities, or a nation), obedient to Allah, Hanif (i.e., to worship none but Allah), and he was not one of those who were Al-Mushrikun (polytheists, idolaters, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah, and those who joined partners with Allah). (He was) thankful for His (Allah’s) Favours. He (Allah) chose him (as an intimate friend) and guided him to a Straight Path (Islamic Monotheism, neither Judaism nor Christianity).

Surah 16 An-Nahl Verses 120-121

Your Lord is He Who drives the ship for you through the sea, in order that you may seek of His Bounty. Truly! He is Ever Most Merciful towards you. And when harm touches you upon the sea, those that you call upon besides Him vanish from you except Him (Allah Alone). But when He brings you safely to land, you turn away (from Him). And man is ever ungrateful.

Surah 17 Al-Isra Verses 66-67

Truly, Allah defends those who believe. Verily! Allah likes not any treacherous ingrate to Allah [those who disobey Allah but obey Shaitan (Satan)].

Surah 22 Al-Haj Verse 38

And when they embark on a ship, they invoke Allah, making their Faith pure for Him only, but when He brings them safely to land, behold, they give a share of their worship to others. So that they become ingrate for that which We have given them, and that they take their enjoyment (as a warning and a threat), but they will come to know.

Surah 29 Al-Ankabut Verses 65-66

And when harm touches men, they cry sincerely only to their Lord (Allah), turning to Him in repentance, but when He gives them a taste of His Mercy, behold! a party of them associate partners in worship with their Lord. So as to be ungrateful for the graces which We have bestowed on them. Then enjoy (your short life); but you will come to know.

Surah 30 Ar-Rum Verses 33-34

Allah is He Who sends the winds, so they raise clouds, and spread them along the sky as He wills, and then break them into fragments, until you see rain drops come forth from their midst! Then when He has made them fall on whom of His slaves as He will, lo! they rejoice!... And if We send a wind (which would spoil the green growth (tilth) brought up by the previous rain), and they see (their tilth) turn yellow, behold, they then after their being glad, would become unthankful (to their Lord Allah as) disbelievers.

Surah 30 Ar-Rum Verses 48/51

See you not that the ships sail through the sea by Allah’s Grace? that He may show you of His Signs? Verily, in this are signs for every patient, grateful (person). And when a wave covers them like shades (i.e., like clouds or the mountains of seawater), they invoke Allah, making their invocations for Him only. But when He brings them safe to land, there are among them those that stop in the middle, between (belief and disbelief). But none denies Our Signs except every perfidious ungrateful.

Surah 31 Luqman Verses 31-32

If you disbelieve, then verily, Allah is not in need of you, He likes not disbelief for His slaves. And if you are grateful (by being believers), He is pleased therewith for you. No bearer of burdens shall bear the burden of another. Then to your Lord is your return, so He will inform you what you used to do. Verily, He is the All-Knower of that which is in (men’s) breasts.

Surah 39 Az-Zumar Verse 7

And indeed, it has been revealed to you (O Muhammad, pbuh), as it was to those (Allah’s Messengers) before you: “If you join others in worship with Allah, (then) surely (all) your deeds will be in vain, and you will certainly be among the losers”. Nay! But worship Allah (Alone and none else), and be among the grateful.

Surah 39 Az-Zumar Verses 65-66

He is the Ever Living, La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), so invoke Him making your worship pure for Him Alone (by worshipping Him Alone, and none else, and by doing righteous deeds sincerely for Allah’s sake only, and not to show off, and not to set up rivals with Him in worship). All the praises and thanks be to Allah, the Lord of the Alamin (mankind, jinn and all that exists).

Surah 40 Al-Ghafir Verse 65

But if they turn away (O Muhammad, pbuh, from the Islamic Monotheism, which you have brought to them). We have not sent you as a Hafeez (protector) over them (i.e., to take care of their deeds and to recompense them). Your duty is to convey (the Message). And verily, when We cause man to taste of Mercy from Us, he rejoices thereat, but when some ill befalls them because of the deeds which their hands have sent forth, then verily, man (becomes) ingrate!

Surah 42 Ash-Shura Verse 48

And verily, to Our Lord we indeed are to return! Yet they assign to some of His slaves a share with Him (by pretending that He has children, and considering them as equals or co-partners in worship with Him). Verily, man is indeed a manifest ingrate!

Surah 43 Az-Zukhruf Verses 14-15

The people of Lut (Lot) belied the warnings. Verily, We sent against them a violent storm of stones (which destroyed them all), except the family of Lut, whom We saved in last hour of the night; As a Favour from Us, thus do We reward him who gives thanks.

Surah 54 Al-Qamar Verse 33-35

And (remember) when We appointed for Musa (Moses) forty nights, and (in his absence) you took the calf (for worship), and you were Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers). Then after that We forgave you so that you might be grateful.

Surah 2 Al-Baqarah Verses 51-52

Similarly (to complete My Blessings on you) We have sent among you a Messenger (Muhammad, pbuh) of your own, reciting to you Our Verses (the Quran) and sanctifying you, and teaching you the Book (the Quran) and the Hikmah (i.e., Sunnah, Islamic laws and Fiqh - jurisprudence), and teaching you that which you used not to know. Therefore, remember Me (by praying, glorifying, etc.). I will remember you, and be grateful to Me and never be ungrateful to Me.

Surah 2 Al-Baqarah Verses 151-152

O you who believe (in the Oneness of Allah - Islamic Monotheism)! Eat of the lawful things that We have provided you with, and be grateful to Allah, if it is indeed He Whom you worship.

Surah 2 Al-Baqarah Verse 172

The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Quran, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs for the guidance and the criterion (between right and wrong). So, whoever of you sights (the crescent on the first night of) the month (of Ramadan), he must observe Saum (fasts) that month, and whoever is ill or on a journey, the same number (of days which one did not observe Saum (fasts) must be made up) from other days. Allah intends for you ease, and He does not want to make things difficult for you. (He wants that you) must complete the same number (of days), and that you must magnify Allah for having guided you so that you may be grateful to Him.

Surah 2 Al-Baqarah Verse 185

O you who believe! When you intend to offer As-Salat (the prayer), wash your faces and your hands (forearms) up to the elbows, rub (by passing wet hands over) your heads, and (wash) your feet up to ankles. If you are in a state of Janaba (i.e., had a sexual discharge), purify yourself (bathe your whole body). But if you are ill or on a journey or any of you comes from the Ghait (answering the call of nature), or you have been in contact with women (i.e., sexual intercourse) and you find no water, then perform Tayammum with clean earth and rub therewith your faces and hands. Allah does not want to place you in difficulty, but He wants to purify you, and to complete His Favour on you that you may be thankful.

Surah 5 Al-Maidah Verse 6

Allah will not punish you for what is unintentional in your oaths, but He will punish you for your deliberate oaths; for its expiation (a deliberate oath) feed ten Masakin (poor persons), on a scale of the average of that with which you feed your own families; or clothe them; or manumit a slave. But whosoever cannot afford (that), then he should fast for three days. That is the expiation for the oaths when you have sworn. And protect your oaths (i.e., do not swear much). Thus, Allah make clear to you His Ayat (proofs, evidences, signs) that you may be grateful.

Surah 5 Al-Maidah Verse 89

All praises and thanks be to Allah, Who (Alone) created the heavens and the earth, and originated the darkness and the light, yet those who disbelieve hold others as equal with their Lord.

Surah 6 Al-Anam Verse1

And surely, We gave you authority on the earth and appointed for you therein provisions (for your life). Little thanks do you give.

Surah 7 Al-Araf Verse 10

And We shall remove from their breasts any (mutual) hatred or sense of injury (which they had, if at all, in the life of this world); rivers flowing under them, and they will say: “All the praises and thanks be to Allah, Who has guided us to this, never could we have found guidance, were it not that Allah had guided us! Indeed, the Messengers of our Lord did come with the truth.” And it will be cried out to them: “This is the Paradise which you have inherited for what you used to do”.

Surah 7 Al-Araf Verse 43

The vegetation of a good land comes forth (easily) by the Permission of its Lord; and that which is bad, brings forth nothing but (a little) with difficulty. Thus, do We explain variously the Ayat (proofs, evidences, signs) for a people who give thanks.

Surah 7 Al-Araf Verse 58

And remember when you (believers at Mecca) were few and were reckoned weak in the land, and were afraid that men might kidnap you, but He provided a safe place for you, strengthened you with His Help, and provided you with good things so that you might be grateful.

Surah 8 Al-Anfal Verse 26

[Ibrahim (Abraham) said:] “O our Lord! I have made some of my offspring to dwell in an uncultivable valley by Your Sacred House (the Kabah at Makkah) in order, O our Lord, that they may perform As-Salat (the prayers). So, fill some hearts among men with love towards them, and provide them with fruits so that they may give thanks”.

Surah 14 Ibrahim Verse 37

And He it is Who has subjected the sea (to you), that you eat thereof fresh tender meat (i.e., fish), and that you bring forth out of it ornaments to wear. And you see the ships ploughing through it, that you may seek (thus) of His Bounty (by transporting the goods from place to place) and that you may be grateful.

Surah 16 An-Nahl Verse 14

Allah puts forward the example (of two men a believer and a disbeliever); a slave (disbeliever) under the possession of another, he has no power of any sort, and (the other), a man (believer) on whom We have bestowed a good provision from Us, and He spends thereof secretly and openly. Can they be equal? (By no means, not). All the praises and thanks be to Allah. Nay! (But) most of them know not.

Surah 16 An-Nahl Verse 75

And Allah has brought you out from the wombs of your mothers while you know nothing. And He gave you hearing, sight, and hearts that you might give thanks (to Allah).

Surah 16 An-Nahl Verse 78

So, eat of the lawful and good food which Allah has provided for you. And be grateful for the Graces of Allah, if it is He Whom you worship.

Surah 16 An-Nahl Verse 114

And give to the kindred his due and to the Miskin (poor) and to the wayfarer. But spend not wastefully (your wealth) in the manner of a spendthrift. Verily, spendthrifts are brothers of the Shayatin (devils), and the Shaitan (Satan) is ever ungrateful to his Lord.

Surah 17 Al-Isra Verse 26-27

All the praises and thanks be to Allah, Who has sent down to His slave (Muhammad, pbuh) the Book (the Quran), and has not placed therein any crookedness.

Surah 18 Al-Kahf Verse 1

And the Budn (cows, oxen, or camels driven to be offered as sacrifices by the pilgrims at the sanctuary of Makkah); We have made for you as among the Symbols of Allah, therein you have much good. So, mention the Name of Allah over them when they are drawn up in lines (for sacrifice). Then, when they are down on their sides (after slaughter), eat thereof, and feed the beggar who does not ask (men), and the beggar who asks (men). Thus, have We made them subject to you that you may be grateful.

Surah 22 Al-Hajj Verse 36

See you not (O mankind) that Allah has subjected to you all that is on the earth, and the ships that sail through the sea by His Command? He withholds the heaven from falling on the earth except by His Leave. Verily, Allah is, for mankind, full of Kindness, Most Merciful. It is He, Who gave you life, and then will cause you to die, and will again give you life (on the Day of Resurrection). Verily! Man is indeed an ingrate.

Surah 22 Al-Haj Verses 65-66

And when you [Nuh (Noah)] have embarked on the ship, you and whoever is with you, then say: “All the praises and thanks be to Allah, Who has saved us from the people who are Zalimoon (i.e. oppressors, wrong-doers, polytheists, those who join others in worship with Allah, etc.)”.

Surah 23 Al-Muminun Verse 28

It is He Who has created for you (the sense of) hearing (ears), eyes (sight), and hearts (understanding). Little thanks you give.

Surah 23 Al-Muminun Verse 78

And indeed, We gave knowledge to Dawud (David) and Sulaiman (Solomon), and they both said: “All the praises and thanks be to Allah, Who has preferred us above many of His believing slaves!”

Surah 27 An-Naml Verse 15

Till, when they came to the valley of the ants, one of the ants said: “O ants! Enter your dwellings, lest Sulaiman (Solomon) and his hosts crush you, while they perceive not”. So, he [Sulaiman (Solomon)] smiled, amused at her speech and said: “My Lord! Inspire and bestow upon me the power and ability that I may be grateful for Your Favours which You have bestowed on me and on my parents, and that I may do righteous good deeds that will please You, and admit me by Your Mercy among Your righteous slaves”.

Surah 27 An-Naml Verses 18-19

And they (the disbelievers) say: “When will this promise (be fulfilled), if you are truthful?”. Say: “Perhaps that you wish to hasten on, may be close behind you. Verily, your Lord is full of grace for mankind, yet most of them do not give thanks”.

Surah 27 An-Naml Verses 71-73

And say [(O Muhammad, pbuh) to these polytheists and pagans]: “All the praises and thanks be to Allah. He will show you His Ayat (signs, in yourselves, and in the universe or punishments, etc.), and you shall recognise them. And your Lord is not unaware of what you do”.

Surah 27 An-Naml Verse 93

And how many a town (population) have We destroyed, which were thankless for its means of livelihood (disobeyed Allah, and His Messengers, by doing evil deeds and crimes)! And those are their dwellings, which have not been inhabited after them except a little. And verily! We have been the inheritors.

Surah 28 Al-Qasas Verse 58

Say (O Muhammad, pbuh): “Tell me! If Allah made day continuous for you till the Day of Resurrection, who is an ilah (a god) besides Allah who could bring you night wherein you rest? Will you not then see?” It is out of His Mercy that He has put for you night and day, that you may rest therein (i.e., during the night) and that you may seek of His Bounty (i.e., during the day), and in order that you may be grateful.

Surah 28 Al-Qasas Verse 72-73

And if you were to ask them: “Who sends down water (rain) from the sky, and gives life therewith to the earth after its death?” they will surely reply: “Allah”. Say: “All praise and thanks are Allah’s!” Nay, most of them have no sense.

Surah 29 Al-Ankabut Verse 63

And among His Signs is this, that He sends the winds as glad tidings, giving you a taste of His Mercy (i.e., rain), and that the ships may sail at His Command, and that you may seek of His Bounty, in order that you may be thankful.

Surah 30 Ar-Rum Verse 46

And indeed, We bestowed upon Luqman Al-Hikmah (wisdom and religious understanding, saying:) “Give thanks to Allah”. And whoever gives thanks, he gives thanks for (the good of) his own self. And whoever is unthankful, then verily, Allah is All-Rich (Free of all needs), Worthy of all praise.

Surah 31 Luqman Verse 12

And We have enjoined on man (to be dutiful and good) to his parents. His mother bore him in weakness and hardship upon weakness and hardship, and his weaning is in two years – give thanks to Me and to your parents. To Me is the final destination.

Surah 31 Luqman Verse14

And if you (O Muhammad, pbuh) ask them: “Who has created the heavens and the earth”, they will certainly say: “Allah”. Say: “All the praises and thanks be to Allah!” But most of them know not.

Surah 31 Luqman Verse 25

That is He (Allah), the All-Knower of the unseen and the seen, the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful. Who made everything He has created good and He began the creation of man from clay. Then He made his offspring from semen of despised water (male and female sexual discharge). Then He fashioned him in due proportion, and breathed into him the soul (created by Allah for that person); and He gave you hearing (ears), sight (eyes) and hearts. Little is the thanks you give!

Surah 32 As-Sajdah Verses 6-9

All the praises and thanks be to Allah, to Whom belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth. His is all the praises and thanks in the Hereafter, and He is the All Wise, the All Aware. He knows that which goes into the earth and that which comes forth from it, and that which descend from the heaven and that which ascends to it. And He is the Most Merciful, the Oft Forgiving.

Surah 34 Saba Verse 1-2

And to Sulaiman (Solomon) (We subjected) the wind, its morning (stride from sunrise till midnoon) was a month’s (journey), and its afternoon (stride from the midday decline of the sun to sunset) was a month’s (journey, i.e., in one day he could travel two month’s journey). And We caused a fount of (molten) brass to flow for him, and there were jinn that worked in front of him, by the Leave of his Lord. And whosoever of them turned aside from Our Command, We shall cause him to taste of the torment of the blazing Fire. They worked for him as he desired, (making) high rooms, images, basins as large as reservoirs, and (cooking) cauldrons fixed (in their places). “Work you, O family of Dawud (David), with thanks!” But few of My slaves are grateful.

Surah 34 Saba Verses 12-13

Indeed, there was for Saba (Sheba) a sign in their dwelling place - two gardens on the right hand and on the left; (and it was said to them) “Eat of the provision of your Lord, and be grateful to Him”. A fair land and an Oft-Forgiving Lord!

Surah 34 Saba Verse 15

All the praises and thanks be to Allah, the (only) Originator [or the (only) Creator] of the heavens and the earth, Who made the angels messengers with wings, - two or three or four. He increases in creation what He wills. Verily, Allah is Able to do all things. Whatever of mercy (i.e., of good), Allah may grant to mankind, none can withhold it, and whatever He may withhold, none can grant it thereafter. And He is the All Mighty, the All Wise.

Surah 35 Fatir Verse 1-2

And the two seas (kinds of water) are not alike, this is palatable, sweet and pleasant to drink, and that is salt and bitter. And from them both you eat fresh tender meat (fish), and derive the ornaments that you wear. And you see the ships cleaving (the sea water as they sail through it), that you may seek of His bounty, and that you may give thanks.

Surah 35 Fatir Verse 12

And they (people who enter Paradise) will say: “All praise and thanks are Allah’s Who has removed from us (all) grief. Verily, our Lord is indeed Oft-Forgiving, Most Ready to appreciate (good deeds and to recompense). Who, out of His Grace, has lodged us in a home that will last forever, where toil will touch us not, nor weariness will touch us”.

Surah 35 Fatir Verses 34-35

And a sign for them is the dead land. We give it life, and We bring forth from it grains, so that they eat thereof. And We have made therein gardens of date palms and grapes, and We have caused springs of water to gush forth therein. So that they may eat of the fruit thereof – and their hands made it not. Will they not then give thanks?

Surah 36 Ya-Sin Verses 33-35

Do they not see that We have created for them of what Our Hands have created, the cattle, so that they are their owners! And We have subdued them unto them so that some of them they have for riding and some they eat. And they have (other) benefits from them (besides), and they get (milk) to drink. Will they not then be grateful?

Surah 36 Ya-Sin Verses 71-73

Allah puts forth a similitude: a (slave) man belonging to many partners (like those who worship others along with Allah) disputing with one another, and a (slave) man belonging entirely to one master, (like those who worship Allah Alone). Are those two equal in comparison? All the praises and thanks be to Allah! But most of them know not.

Surah 39 Az-Zumar Verse 29

And they (people who enter Paradise) will say: “All praise and thanks are Allah’s Who has fulfilled His Promise to us and has made us inherit (this) land. We can dwell in Paradise where we will; how excellent a reward for the (pious, good) workers! And you will see the angels surrounding the Throne (of Allah) from all round, glorifying the praises of their Lord (Allah). And they (all the creatures) will be judged with truth, and it will be said. All the praises and thanks be to Allah, the Lord of the Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists)”.

Surah 39 Az-Zumar Verse 74-75

Allah, it is He Who has made the night for you that you may rest therein and the day for you to see. Truly, Allah is full of bounty to mankind; yet, most of mankind give no thanks.

Surah 40 Ghafir Verse 61

Allah it is He Who has subjected to you the sea, that ships may sail through it by His Command, and that you may seek of His Bounty, and that you may be thankful. And has subjected to you all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth; it is all as a favour and kindness from Him. Verily, in it are signs for a people who think deeply.

Surah 45 Al-Jathiya Verse 12-13

So, all the praises and thanks are to Allah, the Lord of the heavens and the Lord of the earth, and the Lord of the Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists). And His (Alone) is the Majesty in the heavens and the earth, and He is the All-Mighty, the All Wise.

Surah 45 Al-Jathiya Verse 36-37

And We have enjoined on man to be dutiful and kind to his parents. His mother bears him with hardship and she brings him forth with hardship, and the bearing of him, and the weaning of him is thirty months, till when he attains full strength and reaches forty years, he says: “My Lord! Grant me the power and ability that I may be grateful for Your Favour which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents, and that I may do righteous good deeds, such as please You, and make my off-spring good. Truly, I have turned to You in repentance, and truly, I am one of the Muslims (submitting to Your Will)”.

Surah 46 Al-Ahqaf Verse 15

Then tell Me about the water that you drink. Is it you who cause it to come down, or are We the Causer of it to come down? If We willed, We verily could make it salt (and undrinkable); why then do you not give thanks (to Allah)?

Surah 56 Al-Waqiah Verses 68-70

Who is he that can provide for you if He (Allah) should withhold His provision? Nay, but they continue to be in pride, and (they) flee (from the truth). Is he who walks prone (without seeing) on his face, more rightly guided, or he who (sees and) walks upright on a Straight Way (i.e., Islamic Monotheism)? Say: “It is He Who has created you, and endowed you with hearing (ears) and seeing (eyes), and hearts. Little thanks you give”.

Surah 67 Al-Mulk Verses 21-23

Verily, We have created man from Nutfah (mixed drops of male and female sexual discharge), in order to try him, so We made him hearer, seer. Verily, We showed him the way, whether he be grateful or ungrateful.

Surah 76 Al-Insan Verse 2-3

Be cursed (the disbelieving) man! How ungrateful he is! From what thing did He create him? From Nutfah (mixed drops of male and female sexual discharge) He created him, and then set him in due proportion; Then He makes the Path easy for him; Then He causes him to die, and puts him in his grave; Then, when it is His Will, He will resurrect him (again). Nay, but (man) has not done what He commanded him. Then let man look at his food; That We pour forth water in abundance; And We split the earth in clefts; And We cause therein the grain to grow; And grapes and clover plants (i.e., green fodder for the cattle); And olives and date-palms; And gardens, dense with many trees; And fruits and Abba (herbage, etc.); (To be) a provision and benefit for you and your cattle.
