Luxury / Luxuries / Comforts

Luxury (Taraf) linguistically means vanity and arrogance due to living a life of ease and comfort. When we say wealth made somebody luxurious, we mean it made him arrogant and corrupted him. That the person became luxurious means that he insisted on tyranny (on himself or others). He also transgressed and became haughty.

Therefore, the luxury (Taraf) which the Quran condemned, and Allah prohibited and considered a sin is the Taraf that linguistically means haughtiness and arrogance due to ease of living, but not the ease of living itself. Therefore, it is wrong to interpret Taraf as enjoying the wealth and ease of living by that which Allah provided, because ease of living and enjoying the provision of Allah are not condemned by Shariah.

Allah said:

قُلْ مَنْ حَرَّمَ زِينَةَ اللّهِ الَّتِيَ أَخْرَجَ لِعِبَادِهِ وَالْطَّيِّبَاتِ مِنَ الرِّزْقِ

“Say: Who has forbidden the adornment of Allah which He has brought for His servants and the good things of His provision?” [Al-Araf: 32]

At-Tirmidhi narrated from Abdullah ibn Amr who said: The Prophet, pbuh, said, ‘Allah likes to see the signs of His favour (bounties) on His servant’ i.e. He loves for His servants to enjoy His favour and enjoy the good things He has provided for him.

But Allah hates the haughtiness, arrogance and transgression that may result from a life of ease. Since a life of ease and comfort by the abundant wealth could lead some people to arrogance, tyranny and haughtiness; that is, it creates Taraf in them, Islam prohibited that type of luxury.

So, when it is said that Taraf is Haram it does not mean the life of ease is Haram, it rather means that arrogance which results from the easy use of wealth is Haram, as Taraf would mean linguistically, and as luxury (Taraf) would mean from the verses of the Quran.

Let us now have a look at the various verses of the Quran that speak about Luxury/Luxuries, and the traits of the people exhibiting it.

وَإِذَآ أَرَدۡنَآ أَن نُّهۡلِكَ قَرۡيَةً أَمَرۡنَا مُتۡرَفِيهَا فَفَسَقُواْ فِيهَا فَحَقَّ عَلَيۡهَا ٱلۡقَوۡلُ فَدَمَّرۡنَٰهَا تَدۡمِيرٗا ١٦

And when We decide to destroy a town (population), We (first) send a definite order to those among them who lead a life of luxury. Then, they transgress therein, and thus the word (of torment) is justified against it (them). Then We destroy it with complete destruction.

Surah 17 Al-Isra Verse 16

وَكَمۡ قَصَمۡنَا مِن قَرۡيَةٖ كَانَتۡ ظَالِمَةٗ وَأَنشَأۡنَا بَعۡدَهَا قَوۡمًا ءَاخَرِينَ ١١ فَلَمَّآ أَحَسُّواْ بَأۡسَنَآ إِذَا هُم مِّنۡهَا يَرۡكُضُونَ ١٢ لَا تَرۡكُضُواْ وَٱرۡجِعُوٓاْ إِلَىٰ مَآ أُتۡرِفۡتُمۡ فِيهِ وَمَسَٰكِنِكُمۡ لَعَلَّكُمۡ تُسۡ‍َٔلُونَ ١٣

How many a town (community) given to wrongdoing, have We destroyed, and raised up after them another people! Then, when they perceived (saw) Our torment (coming), behold, they (tried to) flee from it. Flee not, but return to that wherein you lived a luxurious life, and to your homes, in order that you may be questioned.

Surah 21 Al-Anbiya Verses 11-13

وَلَقَدِ ٱسۡتُهۡزِئَ بِرُسُلٖ مِّن قَبۡلِكَ فَحَاقَ بِٱلَّذِينَ سَخِرُواْ مِنۡهُم مَّا كَانُواْ بِهِۦ يَسۡتَهۡزِءُونَ ٤١ قُلۡ مَن يَكۡلَؤُكُم بِٱلَّيۡلِ وَٱلنَّهَارِ مِنَ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِۚ بَلۡ هُمۡ عَن ذِكۡرِ رَبِّهِم مُّعۡرِضُونَ ٤٢ أَمۡ لَهُمۡ ءَالِهَةٞ تَمۡنَعُهُم مِّن دُونِنَاۚ لَا يَسۡتَطِيعُونَ نَصۡرَ أَنفُسِهِمۡ وَلَا هُم مِّنَّا يُصۡحَبُونَ ٤٣ بَلۡ مَتَّعۡنَا هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ وَءَابَآءَهُمۡ حَتَّىٰ طَالَ عَلَيۡهِمُ ٱلۡعُمُرُۗ أَفَلَا يَرَوۡنَ أَنَّا نَأۡتِي ٱلۡأَرۡضَ نَنقُصُهَا مِنۡ أَطۡرَافِهَآۚ أَفَهُمُ ٱلۡغَٰلِبُونَ ٤٤

Indeed (many) Messengers were mocked before you (O Muhammad, pbuh), but the scoffers were surrounded by that, whereat they used to mock. Say: “Who can guard and protect you in the night or in the day from the (punishment of the) Most Gracious (Allah)?” Nay, but they turn away from the remembrance of their Lord. Or have they alihah (gods) who can guard them from Us? They have no power to help themselves, nor can they be protected from Us (from Our torment). Nay, We gave the luxuries of this life to these men and their fathers until the period grew long for them. See they not that We gradually reduce the land (in their control) from its outlying borders? Is it then they who will overcome?

Surah 21 Al-Anbiya Verses 41-44

ثُمَّ أَنشَأۡنَا مِنۢ بَعۡدِهِمۡ قَرۡنًا ءَاخَرِينَ ٣١ فَأَرۡسَلۡنَا فِيهِمۡ رَسُولٗا مِّنۡهُمۡ أَنِ ٱعۡبُدُواْ ٱللَّهَ مَا لَكُم مِّنۡ إِلَٰهٍ غَيۡرُهُۥٓۚ أَفَلَا تَتَّقُونَ ٣٢ وَقَالَ ٱلۡمَلَأُ مِن قَوۡمِهِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ وَكَذَّبُواْ بِلِقَآءِ ٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ وَأَتۡرَفۡنَٰهُمۡ فِي ٱلۡحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡيَا مَا هَٰذَآ إِلَّا بَشَرٞ مِّثۡلُكُمۡ يَأۡكُلُ مِمَّا تَأۡكُلُونَ مِنۡهُ وَيَشۡرَبُ مِمَّا تَشۡرَبُونَ ٣٣ وَلَئِنۡ أَطَعۡتُم بَشَرٗا مِّثۡلَكُمۡ إِنَّكُمۡ إِذٗا لَّخَٰسِرُونَ ٣٤ أَيَعِدُكُمۡ أَنَّكُمۡ إِذَا مِتُّمۡ وَكُنتُمۡ تُرَابٗا وَعِظَٰمًا أَنَّكُم مُّخۡرَجُونَ ٣٥ ۞هَيۡهَاتَ هَيۡهَاتَ لِمَا تُوعَدُونَ ٣٦

إِنۡ هِيَ إِلَّا حَيَاتُنَا ٱلدُّنۡيَا نَمُوتُ وَنَحۡيَا وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمَبۡعُوثِينَ ٣٧ إِنۡ هُوَ إِلَّا رَجُلٌ ٱفۡتَرَىٰ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ كَذِبٗا وَمَا نَحۡنُ لَهُۥ بِمُؤۡمِنِينَ ٣٨

Then after them (people of Noah), We created another generation. And We sent to them a Messenger from among themselves (saying): “Worship Allah! You have no other Ilah (God) but Him. Will you not then be afraid (of Him, i.e., of His punishment because of worshipping others besides Him)?” and the chiefs of his people who disbelieved and denied the Meeting in the Hereafter, and whom We had given the luxuries and comforts of this life, said: “He is no more than a human being like you, he eats of that which you eat, and drinks of what you drink. If you were to obey a human being like yourselves, then verily, you indeed would be losers. Does he promise you that when you have died and have become dust and bones, you shall come out alive (resurrected)? Far, very far is that which you are promised! There is nothing but our life of this world! We die and we live! And we are not going to be resurrected! He is only a man who has invented a lie against Allah, and we are not going to believe him.”

Surah 23 Al-Muminun Verses 31-38

بَلۡ قُلُوبُهُمۡ فِي غَمۡرَةٖ مِّنۡ هَٰذَا وَلَهُمۡ أَعۡمَٰلٞ مِّن دُونِ ذَٰلِكَ هُمۡ لَهَا عَٰمِلُونَ ٦٣ حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَآ أَخَذۡنَا مُتۡرَفِيهِم بِٱلۡعَذَابِ إِذَا هُمۡ يَجۡ‍َٔرُونَ ٦٤ لَا تَجۡ‍َٔرُواْ ٱلۡيَوۡمَۖ إِنَّكُم مِّنَّا لَا تُنصَرُونَ ٦٥ قَدۡ كَانَتۡ ءَايَٰتِي تُتۡلَىٰ عَلَيۡكُمۡ فَكُنتُمۡ عَلَىٰٓ أَعۡقَٰبِكُمۡ تَنكِصُونَ ٦٦ مُسۡتَكۡبِرِينَ بِهِۦ سَٰمِرٗا تَهۡجُرُونَ ٦٧ أَفَلَمۡ يَدَّبَّرُواْ ٱلۡقَوۡلَ أَمۡ جَآءَهُم مَّا لَمۡ يَأۡتِ ءَابَآءَهُمُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ ٦٨ أَمۡ لَمۡ يَعۡرِفُواْ رَسُولَهُمۡ فَهُمۡ لَهُۥ مُنكِرُونَ ٦٩ أَمۡ يَقُولُونَ بِهِۦ جِنَّةُۢۚ بَلۡ جَآءَهُم بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَأَكۡثَرُهُمۡ لِلۡحَقِّ كَٰرِهُونَ ٧٠ وَلَوِ ٱتَّبَعَ ٱلۡحَقُّ أَهۡوَآءَهُمۡ لَفَسَدَتِ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتُ وَٱلۡأَرۡضُ وَمَن فِيهِنَّۚ بَلۡ أَتَيۡنَٰهُم بِذِكۡرِهِمۡ فَهُمۡ عَن ذِكۡرِهِم مُّعۡرِضُونَ ٧١

Nay, but their hearts are covered from (understanding) this (the Quran), and they have other (evil) deeds, besides which they are doing. Until when We seize those of them who lead a luxurious life with punishment, behold, they make humble invocation with a loud voice. Invoke not loudly this day! Certainly, you shall not be helped by Us. Indeed, My Verses used to be recited to you, but you used to turn back on your heels (denying them, and refusing with hatred to listen to them). In pride, talking evil about it (the Quran) by night. Have they not pondered over the Word (of Allah, i.e., what is sent down to the Prophet, pbuh), or has there come to them what had not come to their fathers of old? Or is it that they did not recognize their Messenger (Muhammad, pbuh) so they deny him? Or say they: “There is madness in him?” Nay, but he brought them the truth (Tauheed), but most of them (the disbelievers) are averse to the truth. And if the truth had been in accordance with their desires, verily, the heavens and the earth, and whosoever is therein would have been corrupted! Nay, We brought them their reminder, but they turn away from their reminder.

Surah 23 Al-Muminun Verses 63-71

وَيَوۡمَ يَحۡشُرُهُمۡ وَمَا يَعۡبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ فَيَقُولُ ءَأَنتُمۡ أَضۡلَلۡتُمۡ عِبَادِي هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ أَمۡ هُمۡ ضَلُّواْ ٱلسَّبِيلَ ١٧ قَالُواْ سُبۡحَٰنَكَ مَا كَانَ يَنۢبَغِي لَنَآ أَن نَّتَّخِذَ مِن دُونِكَ مِنۡ أَوۡلِيَآءَ وَلَٰكِن مَّتَّعۡتَهُمۡ وَءَابَآءَهُمۡ حَتَّىٰ نَسُواْ ٱلذِّكۡرَ وَكَانُواْ قَوۡمَۢا بُورٗا ١٨ فَقَدۡ كَذَّبُوكُم بِمَا تَقُولُونَ فَمَا تَسۡتَطِيعُونَ صَرۡفٗا وَلَا نَصۡرٗاۚ وَمَن يَظۡلِم مِّنكُمۡ نُذِقۡهُ عَذَابٗا كَبِيرٗا ١٩

And on the Day when He will gather them all together and that which they worship besides Allah [idols, angels, pious men, saints]. He will say: “Was it you who misled these My slaves or did they (themselves) stray from the (Right) Path?” They will say: “Glorified are You! It was not for us to take any Auliya (protector, helper) besides You, but You gave them and their fathers comfort till they forgot the warning, and became a lost people”. Thus they (false gods) will deny you (polytheists) regarding what you say, then you can neither avert (the punishment) nor get help. And whoever among you does wrong (i.e., sets up rivals to Allah), We shall make him taste a great torment.

Surah 25 Al-Furqan Verses 17-19

وَكَمۡ أَهۡلَكۡنَا مِن قَرۡيَةِۢ بَطِرَتۡ مَعِيشَتَهَاۖ فَتِلۡكَ مَسَٰكِنُهُمۡ لَمۡ تُسۡكَن مِّنۢ بَعۡدِهِمۡ إِلَّا قَلِيلٗاۖ وَكُنَّا نَحۡنُ ٱلۡوَٰرِثِينَ ٥٨ وَمَا كَانَ رَبُّكَ مُهۡلِكَ ٱلۡقُرَىٰ حَتَّىٰ يَبۡعَثَ فِيٓ أُمِّهَا رَسُولٗا يَتۡلُواْ عَلَيۡهِمۡ ءَايَٰتِنَاۚ وَمَا كُنَّا مُهۡلِكِي ٱلۡقُرَىٰٓ إِلَّا وَأَهۡلُهَا ظَٰلِمُونَ ٥٩ وَمَآ أُوتِيتُم مِّن شَيۡءٖ فَمَتَٰعُ ٱلۡحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡيَا وَزِينَتُهَاۚ وَمَا عِندَ ٱللَّهِ خَيۡرٞ وَأَبۡقَىٰٓۚ أَفَلَا تَعۡقِلُونَ ٦٠ أَفَمَن وَعَدۡنَٰهُ وَعۡدًا حَسَنٗا فَهُوَ لَٰقِيهِ كَمَن مَّتَّعۡنَٰهُ مَتَٰعَ ٱلۡحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡيَا ثُمَّ هُوَ يَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِيَٰمَةِ مِنَ ٱلۡمُحۡضَرِينَ ٦١

And how many a town (population) have We destroyed, which was thankless for its means of livelihood (disobeyed Allah, and His Messengers, by doing evil deeds and crimes)! And those are their dwellings, which have not been inhabited after them except a little. And verily, We have been the inheritor. And never will your Lord destroy the towns (populations) until He sends to their mother town a Messenger reciting to them Our Verses. And never would We destroy the towns unless the people thereof are Zalimun (polytheists, wrongdoers, oppressors). And whatever you have been given is an enjoyment of the life of (this) world and its adornment, and that (Hereafter) which is with Allah is better and will remain forever. Have you then no sense? Is he whom We have promised an excellent promise (Paradise) – which he will find true – like him whom We have made to enjoy the luxuries of the life of (this) world, then on the Day of Resurrection, he will be among those brought up (to be punished in the Hell-Fire)?

Surah 28 Al-Qasas Verses 58-61

وَيَوۡمَ تَقُومُ ٱلسَّاعَةُ يَوۡمَئِذٖ يَتَفَرَّقُونَ ١٤ فَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ فَهُمۡ فِي رَوۡضَةٖ يُحۡبَرُونَ ١٥ وَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ وَكَذَّبُواْ بِ‍َٔايَٰتِنَا وَلِقَآيِٕ ٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ فَأُوْلَٰٓئِكَ فِي ٱلۡعَذَابِ مُحۡضَرُونَ ١٦

And on the Day when the Hour will be established, that Day shall (all men) be separated (i.e., the believers will be separated from the disbelievers). Then as for those who believed (in Islamic Monotheism) and did righteous good deeds, such shall be honoured and made to enjoy luxurious life (forever) in a Garden of Delight (Paradise). And as for those who disbelieved and denied Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, signs), and the Meeting of the Hereafter, such shall be brought forth to the torment (in the Hell-Fire).

Surah 30 Ar-Rum Verses 14-16

وَمَآ أَرۡسَلۡنَا فِي قَرۡيَةٖ مِّن نَّذِيرٍ إِلَّا قَالَ مُتۡرَفُوهَآ إِنَّا بِمَآ أُرۡسِلۡتُم بِهِۦ كَٰفِرُونَ ٣٤ وَقَالُواْ نَحۡنُ أَكۡثَرُ أَمۡوَٰلٗا وَأَوۡلَٰدٗا وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمُعَذَّبِينَ ٣٥

And We did not send a warner to a township but those who were given the worldly wealth and luxuries among them said: “We believe not in the (Message) with which you have been sent”. And they say: “We are more in wealth and in children, and we are not going to be punished”.

Surah 34 Saba Verses 34-35

وَكَذَٰلِكَ مَآ أَرۡسَلۡنَا مِن قَبۡلِكَ فِي قَرۡيَةٖ مِّن نَّذِيرٍ إِلَّا قَالَ مُتۡرَفُوهَآ إِنَّا وَجَدۡنَآ ءَابَآءَنَا عَلَىٰٓ أُمَّةٖ وَإِنَّا عَلَىٰٓ ءَاثَٰرِهِم مُّقۡتَدُونَ ٢٣ ۞قَٰلَ أَوَلَوۡ جِئۡتُكُم بِأَهۡدَىٰ مِمَّا وَجَدتُّمۡ عَلَيۡهِ ءَابَآءَكُمۡۖ قَالُوٓاْ إِنَّا بِمَآ أُرۡسِلۡتُم بِهِۦ كَٰفِرُونَ ٢٤ فَٱنتَقَمۡنَا مِنۡهُمۡۖ فَٱنظُرۡ كَيۡفَ كَانَ عَٰقِبَةُ ٱلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ ٢٥

And similarly, We sent not a warner before you (O Muhammad, pbuh) to any town (people) but the luxurious ones among them said: “We found our fathers following a certain way and religion, and we will indeed follow their footsteps”. (The warner) said: “Even if I bring you better guidance than that which you found your fathers following?”, they said: “Verily, We disbelieve in that with which you have been sent”. So, We took revenge on them, then see what was the end of those who denied (Islamic Monotheism).

Surah 43 Az-Zukhruf Verses 23-25

كَمۡ تَرَكُواْ مِن جَنَّٰتٖ وَعُيُونٖ ٢٥ وَزُرُوعٖ وَمَقَامٖ كَرِيمٖ ٢٦ وَنَعۡمَةٖ كَانُواْ فِيهَا فَٰكِهِينَ ٢٧ كَذَٰلِكَۖ وَأَوۡرَثۡنَٰهَا قَوۡمًا ءَاخَرِينَ ٢٨ فَمَا بَكَتۡ عَلَيۡهِمُ ٱلسَّمَآءُ وَٱلۡأَرۡضُ وَمَا كَانُواْ مُنظَرِينَ ٢٩ وَلَقَدۡ نَجَّيۡنَا بَنِيٓ إِسۡرَٰٓءِيلَ مِنَ ٱلۡعَذَابِ ٱلۡمُهِينِ ٣٠ مِن فِرۡعَوۡنَۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ عَالِيٗا مِّنَ ٱلۡمُسۡرِفِينَ ٣١

How many of gardens and springs that they [Firaun’s (Pharaoh’s) people] left behind; And green crops (fields) and goodly places; And comforts of life wherein they used to take delight! Thus (it was)! We made other people inherit them. And the heavens and the earth wept not for them, nor were they given respite. And indeed, We saved the Children of Israel from the humiliating torment; From Firaun; verily, he was arrogant and was of the Musrifun (those who transgress beyond bound and commit great sins).

Surah 44 Ad-Dukhan Verses 25-31

وَأَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ مَآ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ ٤١ فِي سَمُومٖ وَحَمِيمٖ ٤٢ وَظِلّٖ مِّن يَحۡمُومٖ ٤٣ لَّا بَارِدٖ وَلَا كَرِيمٍ ٤٤ إِنَّهُمۡ كَانُواْ قَبۡلَ ذَٰلِكَ مُتۡرَفِينَ ٤٥ وَكَانُواْ يُصِرُّونَ عَلَى ٱلۡحِنثِ ٱلۡعَظِيمِ ٤٦ وَكَانُواْ يَقُولُونَ أَئِذَا مِتۡنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابٗا وَعِظَٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَبۡعُوثُونَ ٤٧ أَوَ ءَابَآؤُنَا ٱلۡأَوَّلُونَ ٤٨

And those on the Left Hand – how (unfortunate) will be those on the Left Hand? In fierce hot wind and boiling water; And shadows of black smoke; (That shadow) neither cool nor (even) pleasant; Verily, before that, they indulged in luxury; And were persisting in great sin; And they used to say: “When we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be resurrected? And also, our forefathers?”

Surah 56 Al-Waqiah Verses 41-48

ذَرۡنِي وَمَنۡ خَلَقۡتُ وَحِيدٗا ١١ وَجَعَلۡتُ لَهُۥ مَالٗا مَّمۡدُودٗا ١٢ وَبَنِينَ شُهُودٗا ١٣ وَمَهَّدتُّ لَهُۥ تَمۡهِيدٗا ١٤ ثُمَّ يَطۡمَعُ أَنۡ أَزِيدَ ١٥ كَلَّآۖ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ لِأٓيَٰتِنَا عَنِيدٗا ١٦ سَأُرۡهِقُهُۥ صَعُودًا ١٧

Leave Me Alone (to deal) with whom I created lonely (without any wealth or children – Al-Walid bin Al-Mughirah Al-Makhzumi). And then granted him resources in abundance. And children to be by his side. And made his life smooth and comfortable for him. After all that he desires that I should give more; Nay! Verily, he has been opposing Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, signs). I shall oblige him to face a severe torment.

Surah 74 Al-Muddaththir Verses 11-17

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ إِنَّكَ كَادِحٌ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ كَدۡحٗا فَمُلَٰقِيهِ ٦ فَأَمَّا مَنۡ أُوتِيَ كِتَٰبَهُۥ بِيَمِينِهِۦ ٧ فَسَوۡفَ يُحَاسَبُ حِسَابٗا يَسِيرٗا ٨ وَيَنقَلِبُ إِلَىٰٓ أَهۡلِهِۦ مَسۡرُورٗا ٩ وَأَمَّا مَنۡ أُوتِيَ كِتَٰبَهُۥ وَرَآءَ ظَهۡرِهِۦ ١٠ فَسَوۡفَ يَدۡعُواْ ثُبُورٗا ١١ وَيَصۡلَىٰ سَعِيرًا ١٢ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ فِيٓ أَهۡلِهِۦ مَسۡرُورًا ١٣

O man! Verily, you are returning towards your Lord with your deeds and actions (good or bad), a sure returning, so you will meet (the results of your deeds which you did). Then, as for him who will be given his Record in his right hand. He surely will receive an easy reckoning. And will return to his family in joy! But whosoever is given his Record behind his back. He will invoke (his) destruction. And shall enter a blazing Fire, and made to taste its burning. Verily, he was among his people in joy!

Surah 84 Al-Inshiqaq Verses 6-13

Attributes and End Result of people who have had or are having luxurious living

  1. Transgression of the Order sent by Allah – Shall face complete destruction
  2. Given to wrongdoings/ busy in doing evil deeds – Shall be questioned about it
  3. Scoffing of Messengers; Denial of Messengers because they are human; Stating them to be liars and madmen – Shall be surrounded by the same
  4. Turning away from the remembrance of Allah – Shall be helpless against Allah and His punishment
  5. Denial of the concept of Resurrection; Denial of the Meeting of the Hereafter; No sense about the Hereafter – Punishment in the Hell Fire
  6. Denying and refusing, with hatred and pride, the Verses of Allah; talking evil about the Quran; Turning away from the reminder; Hearts are covered from the understanding of the Quran
  7. Aversion to the truth (especially when it is not in accordance with their desires)
  8. Setting up rivals to Allah – lose the Right way and thus face a great punishment from Allah
  9. Thankless for its means of livelihood
  10. Zalimun (polytheists, wrongdoers, oppressors)
  11. Disbelief and denial of the Ayat (proofs, evidences, signs) of Allah
  12. Belief that owing to greater wealth and children they shall not be punished
  13. Adamant on following the footsteps of forefathers despite true guidance being presented to them – Revenge of Allah shall betake them
  14. Transgressing beyond bounds and committing great sins – other people are given authority in the land
  15. Persisting in great sins together with denial in Resurrection and Accounting – Fierce hot wind, boiling water and unpleasant shadows of black smoke (in Hell)
