WARNINGS/SIGNIFICANCE OF THE AYAT
A
We said: ‘Get down all of you from this place (the Paradise), then whenever there comes to you Guidance from Me, and whoever follows My Guidance, there shall be no fear on them, nor shall they grieve. But those who disbelieve and deny Our Ayat – such are the dwellers of the Fire. They shall abide therein forever’
Surah 2 Al-Baqarah Verses 38-39
And indeed, We have sent down to you (O Mankind) manifest Ayat, and none disbelieve in them but Fasiqun (those who rebel against Allah’s command).
Surah 2 Al-Baqarah Verse 99
It is He Who has sent down the Book (The Quran) to you (O Muhammad, pbuh) with truth, confirming what came before it. And He sent down the Taurah (Torah) and the Injil (Gospel), aforetime as a guidance to mankind. And He sent down the Criterion. Truly, those who disbelieve in the Ayat of Allah, for them there is a severe torment; and Allah is All-Mighty, All-Able of retribution.
Surah 3 Al-Imran Verses 3-4
- ‘Criterion’ – is the distinction between misguidance, falsehood and deviation on one hand, and guidance, truth and piety on the other hand. This is because of the indications, signs, plain evidences and clear proofs that it contains, and because of its explanations and clarifications. The reference is to the Quran.
Truly, the religion with Allah is Islam. Those who were given the Scripture (Jews and Christians) did not differ except out of mutual jealousy, after knowledge had come to them. And whoever disbelieves in the Ayat of Allah then surely, Allah is Swift in calling to account.
Surah 3 Al-Imran Verse 19
Surely, those who disbelieved in Our Ayat, We shall burn them in Fire. As often as their skins get roasted through, We shall change them for other skins that they may taste the punishment. Truly, Allah is Ever Most Powerful, All Wise.
Surah 4 An-Nisa Verse 56
But those who disbelieved and denied Our Ayat, they shall be the dwellers of the (Hell) Fire.
Surah 5 Al-Maidah Verse 86
And never an Ayah (sign) comes to them from the Ayat of their Lord, but that they have been turning away from it. Indeed, they rejected the truth when it came to them, but there will come to them the news of that (the torment) which they used to mock at.
Surah 6 Al-Anam Verses 4-5
- This Ayah contains a warning and a stern threat for the disbelievers’ rejection of the truth, stating that they will surely know the truth of what they used to deny and taste the evil end of their behavior.
And who does more aggression and wrong than he who invents a lie against Allah or rejects His Ayat? Verily, the Zalimun (polytheists and evil doers) shall never be successful.
Surah 6 Al-Anam Verse 21
And of them there are some who listen to you; but We have set veils on their hearts, so they understand it not, and deafness in their ears; and even if they see every one of the Ayat they will not believe therein; to the point that when they come to you to argue with you, the disbelievers say: ‘These are nothing but the tales of men of old’ And they prevent others from him (from following the Prophet, pbuh) and they themselves keep away from him, and (by doing so) they destroy not but their own selves, yet they perceive not. If you could but see when they will be held over the (Hell) Fire! They will say: ‘Would that we were but sent back! Then we would not deny the Ayat of our Lord and we would be of the believers!’
Surah 6 Al-Anam Verses 25-27
And We sent not the Messengers but as givers of glad tidings and as warners. So, whoever believes and does righteous good deeds, upon such shall come no fear, nor shall they grieve. But those who reject Our Ayat the torment will touch them for their disbelief.
Surah 6 Al-Anam Verses 48-49
When those who believe in Our Ayat come to you, say: ‘Salamun Alaikum (peace be upon you)’; your Lord has written (prescribed) Mercy for Himself, so that if any of you does evil in ignorance, and thereafter repents and does righteous good deeds, then surely, He is Oft-Forgiving, Most-Merciful. And thus, do We explain the Ayat in detail, that the way of the Mujrimun (criminals, polytheists, wrongdoers) may become manifest.
Surah 6 Al-Anam Verses 54-55
- ‘And thus, do We explain the Ayat in detail...’ – the purpose of this remark is to stress that the persistence of some people in their denial of the truth and in their disbelief, in spite of a host of unmistakably clear signs and arguments, was sufficient to prove beyond doubt that they were merely a bunch of criminals. If they persisted in error and transgression, it was neither through any lack of strong arguments in support of the truth or in support of falsehood, but because they had deliberately chosen to fall into error and transgression.
And who can be more unjust than he who invents a lie against Allah or says: ‘A revelation has come to me’ whereas no Revelation has come to him in anything; and who says: ‘I will reveal the like of what Allah has revealed’. And if you could but see when the Zalimun (polytheists and wrongdoers) are in the agonies of death, while the angels are stretching forth their hands (saying): ‘Deliver your souls! This day you shall be recompensed with the torment of degradation because of what you used to utter against Allah other than the truth. And you used to reject His Ayat with disrespect!’
Surah 6 Al-Anam Verse 93
…And you (O Muhammad, pbuh) should not follow the vain desires of such as treat Our Ayat as falsehoods, and such as believe not in the Hereafter, and they hold others as equal (in worship) with their Lord.
Surah 6 Al-Anam Verse 150
Or lest you (pagan Arabs) should say: ‘If only the Book had been sent down to us, we should surely have been better guided than they (Jews and Christians)’. So, now has come to you a clear proof (the Quran) from your Lord, and a guidance and a mercy. Who then does more wrong than one who rejects the Ayat of Allah and turns away there from? We shall requite those who turn away from Our Ayat with an evil torment, because of their turning away. Do they then wait for anything other than the angels should come to them, or that your Lord (Allah) should come, or that some of the Signs of your Lord should come (i.e. portents of the Hour)! The day that some of the Signs of your Lord do come, no good will it do to a person to believe then, if he believed not before, nor earned good through his faith. Say: ‘Wait you! We (too) are waiting!’
Surah 6 Al-Anam Verses 157-158
- Narrated Abu Hurairah that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘The Last Hour will not commence until the sun rises from the west. When the people witness that, they will all believe. This is when no good will it do to a person to believe then if he believed not before’
- Narrated Abu Hurairah that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘Three, if they appear, then a soul will not benefit from its faith, if it had not believed before or earned good in its faith; when the sun rises from the west; Ad-Dajjal; and the Beast of the earth’
And the weighing on that day (Day of Resurrection) will be the true (weighing). So as for those whose Scale (of good deeds) will be heavy, they will be the successful (by entering Paradise). And as for those whose Scale will be light, they are those who will lose their own selves (by entering Hell) because they denied and rejected Our Ayat.
Surah 7 Al-Araf Verses 8-9
O Children of Adam! If there comes to you Messengers from amongst you, reciting to you My Verses, then whosoever becomes pious and righteous, on them shall be no fear nor shall they grieve. But those who reject Our Ayat and treat them with arrogance, they are the dwellers of the (Hell) Fire, they will abide therein forever.
Surah 7 Al-Araf Verses 35-36
Who is more unjust than one who invents a lie against Allah or rejects His Ayat? For such their appointed portion (good things of this worldly life and their period of stay therein) will reach them from the Book (of Decrees) until when Our messengers (the angel of death and his assistants) come to them to take their souls, they (the angels) will say: ‘Where are those whom you used to invoke and worship besides Allah’, they will reply, ‘They have vanished and deserted us’. And they will bear witness against themselves that they were disbelievers.
Surah 7 Al-Araf Verse 37
Verily, those who deny Our Ayat and treat them with arrogance, for them the gates of Heaven will not be opened, and they will not enter Paradise until the Jamal (Camel/Thick Rope) goes through the eye of the needle. Thus, do We recompense the Mujrimun (criminals, polytheists, sinners). Theirs will be a bed of Hell (Fire) and over them coverings (of Hell-Fire). Thus, do We recompense the Zalimun (polytheists and wrongdoers).
Surah 7 Al-Araf Verses 40-41
And the dwellers of Fire will call to the dwellers of Paradise: ‘Pour on us some water or anything that Allah has provided you with’. They will say: ‘Both (water and provision) Allah has forbidden to the disbelievers. Who took their religion as an amusement and play, and the life of the world deceived them’. So, this Day We shall forget them as they forgot their Meeting of this Day, and as they used to reject Our Ayat.
Surah 7 Al-Araf Verses 50-51
(Musa, pbuh said) ‘And ordain for us good in this world, and in the Hereafter. Certainly we have turned to You’. He said: (As to) My punishment I afflict therewith whom I will and My mercy embraces all things. That (mercy) I shall ordain for those who are the Muttaqun (the pious, Allah-fearing) and give Zakat (obligatory charity); and those who believe in Our Ayat.
Surah 7 Al-Araf Verse 156
Those who reject Our Ayat, We shall gradually seize them with punishment in ways they perceive not. And I respite them; certainly, My plot is strong.
Surah 7 Al-Araf Verses 182-183
- ‘gradually seize them…’ – meaning, the doors of provisions will be opened for them and also the means of livelihood, in this life. They will be deceived by all this and think that they are on the correct path.
- ‘respite’ – means, prolong what they are in.
They (Mushrikun – disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah) have purchased with the Ayat of Allah a little gain, and they hindered men from His way; evil indeed is that which they used to do. With regard to a believer, they respect not the ties, either of kinship or of covenant! It is they who are the transgressors.
Surah 9 At-Taubah Verses 9-10
- ‘a little gain…’ – on the one hand, the Book of Allah invited the unbelievers to virtuous conduct, to righteousness and to observance of divine law. On the other hand, the worldly life offered them ephemeral benefits which they expected to gain by giving a free, unbridled rein to their lusts. On comparing the two, they preferred the latter to the former.
The hypocrites fear lest a Surah (chapter of the Quran) should be revealed about them, showing them what is in their hearts. Say: ‘(Go ahead and) mock! But certainly, Allah will bring to light all that you fear’. If you ask them (about this), they declare: ‘We were only talking idly and joking’. Say: ‘Was it at Allah and His Ayat and His Messenger (pbuh) that you were mocking?’
Surah 9 At-Taubah Verses 64-65
Verily, those who hope not for their Meeting with Us, but are pleased and satisfied with the life of the present world, and those who are heedless of Our Ayat. Those, their abode will be Fire, because of what they used to earn.
Surah 10 Yunus Verses 7-8
- The statement that is being made here is that rejection of the doctrine of the Hereafter necessarily entails punishment of Hell, and the argument that is being preferred in support of it is that those who are oblivious to the Hereafter commit, because of their disbelief in it, evil deeds which can only lead to them suffering the torments of Hell. It is quite clear that the lives of those who do not believe that they will be held to account by Allah for their deeds; who work on the assumption that life is merely confined to the span of worldly existence; who measure human success or failure only in terms of the extent of material comfort, fame and power that a person is able to enjoy; who under the influence of such materialistic notions do not even care to pay attention to those signs of Allah which point to reality, assume an altogether wrong direction with the result that their life is vitiated.
So who does more wrong than he who forges a lie against Allah or denies His Ayat? Surely the Mujrimun (criminals, sinners, polytheists) will never be successful!
Surah 10 Yunus Verse 17
And when We let mankind taste mercy after some adversity has afflicted them, behold! They take to plotting against Our Ayat! Say: ‘Allah is swifter in planning!’ Certainly, Our Messengers (angels) record all of that which you plot.
Surah 10 Yunus Verse 21
- ‘…planning’ – it means that if the unbelievers refuse to accept the truth and to alter their conduct accordingly Allah will still grant them respite to go about their rebellious ways. Allah will also lavish upon them means of subsistence and other bounties as long as they live. All this will keep them in a state of intoxication. However, whatever they do during their state of intoxication will be imperceptibly recorded by the angels of Allah. All this will go on till the very last moments of their lives and then they will be seized by death and will be asked to render an account of their deeds.
So, if you (O Muhammad, pbuh) are in doubt concerning that which We have revealed to you, then ask those who are reading the Book (Taurah and Injil) before you. Verily, the truth has come to you from your Lord. So be not of those who doubt (it). And be not one of those who deny the Ayat of Allah, for then you shall be one of the losers.
Surah 10 Yunus Verses 94-95
And the disbelievers say: ‘Why is not a sign sent down to him from his Lord?’ You are only a warner, and to every people there is a guide.
Surah 13 Ar-Rad Verse 7
- The expression ‘sign’ here signifies the (miraculous) sign that would persuade the unbelievers to have faith in Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) as Allah’s Messenger. For instance, the disbelievers at Mecca were being stubborn when they asked the Prophet (pbuh) to turn As-Safa into gold, to remove the mountains from around them, and to replace them with green fields and rivers. Such was their mentality that they were not willing to appreciate the truth of the Prophet’s teaching even though they found that it was supported by weighty arguments and persuasive proofs. They were also not prepared to consider the excellence of the Prophet’s character as a strong testimony in support of the truth of his teachings. Nor were they prepared to take into account the full significance of the moral transformation which the Prophet’s teachings had brought about in the lives of his Companions. Nor did they pay any heed to the weighty arguments set out in the Quran which showed the hollowness of their polytheistic beliefs and the glaring errors of the superstitions to which they subscribed. They turned a blind eye to all these and insisted that they would believe only if they could come across a miracle that would indisputably prove that the Prophet’s claim to Prophethood was true.
And those who disbelieved say: ‘Why is not a sign sent down to him (Muhammad, pbuh) from his Lord?’ Say: ‘Verily, Allah sends astray whom He wills and guides to Himself those who turn to Him in repentance’.
Surah 13 Ar-Rad Verse 27
- ‘Allah sends astray whom He wills…’ – Allah does not forcibly direct to the right way those who, instead of turning to Allah, defiantly turn away from Him. Allah allows such people to stumble in the deviant ways of their choice. The same factors which direct those who seek Allah’s guidance to the right way are allowed to become the factors of misguidance in respect of those who seek error. Such people are being told that if they failed to find the right way, it is not because there were no signs pointing to it. Their failure was the result of their not being keen enough to be led to the right way. There are signs galore. They are spread all around them. And yet, they are led by none of those signs to Allah for they are not interested in being directed to His way. As for those who earnestly seek the way of Allah, there is no dearth of signs for them.
With clear signs and Books (We sent the Mesengers). And We have also sent down to you (O Muhammad, pbuh) the Dhikr (reminder and advice, the Quran) that you may explain clearly to men what is sent down to them, and that they may give thought.
Surah 16 An-Nahl Verse 44
Verily, those who believe not in the Ayat of Allah, Allah will not guide them and theirs will be a painful torment. It is only those who believe not in the Ayat of Allah, who fabricate falsehood, and it is they who are liars.
Surah 16 An-Nahl Verses 104-105
And he whom Allah guides, he is led aright; but he whom He sends astray, for such you will find no Auliya (helpers and protectors) besides Him, and We shall gather them together on the Day of Resurrection on their faces, blind, dumb and deaf; their abode will be Hell; whenever it abates, We shall increase for them the fierceness of the Fire. That is their recompense, because they denied Our Ayat, and said; ‘When we are bones and fragments, shall we really be raised up as a new creation?’
Surah 17 Al-Isra Verses 97-98
- ‘…blind, dumb and deaf’ – the people of misguidance will be in this state as a punishment for the way they were in this world, blind, dumb and deaf to the truth. This will be their recompense when they are gathered on the Day of Resurrection, at the time when they need these faculties most of all.
And We send not the Messengers except as givers of glad tidings and warners. But those who disbelieve, dispute with false argument in order to refute the truth thereby. And they treat My Ayat and that with which they are warned as a jest and a mockery! And who does more wrong than he who is reminded of the Ayat of his Lord, but turns away from them, forgetting what (deeds) his hands have sent forth. Truly, We have set veils over their hearts lest they should understand this (the Quran), and in their ears, deafness. And if you (O Muhammad, pbuh) call to them to guidance, even then they will never be guided.
Surah 18 Al-Kahf Verses 56-57
‘But whoever turns away from My Reminder, verily for him is a life of hardship, and We shall raise him up blind on the Day of Resurrection’. He will say: ‘O my Lord! Why have you raised me up blind, while I had sight (before)?’ (Allah) will say ‘Like this Our Ayat came to you, but you disregarded them, and so this Day, you will be neglected’. And thus, do We requite him who transgresses beyond bounds, and believes not in the Ayat of his Lord; and the torment of the Hereafter is far more severe and more lasting.
Surah 20 Ta-Ha Verses 124-127
- ‘…life of hardship…’ – This does not mean that all those who are unrighteous will necessarily face poverty. Rather, he will have no tranquility and no expanding of his breast (ease). Rather, his chest will be constrained and in difficulty due to his misguidance. Even if he appears to be in comfort outwardly and he wears whatever he likes, eats whatever he likes and lives wherever he wants, he will not be happy. For verily, his heart will not have pure certainty and guidance. He will be in agitation, bewilderment and doubt. He will always be in confusion and a state of uncertainty. This is from the hardship of life.
Man is created of haste. I will show you My Ayat so ask me not to hasten (them).
Surah 21 Al-Anbiya Verse 37
- The unbelievers derided the very notion of Allah’s punishment, of the Hereafter, and of Hell. They contended that even though they had heard the Prophet’s warnings and had rejected his teachings, they nevertheless continued to flourish. Allah’s punishment, they argued, was not forthcoming nor did it appear as if the Day of Judgment was imminent. This verse is in response to such statements from the unbelievers. Ayat here is interpreted to mean Allah’s vengeance, ruling and power over those who disobey Him.
Thus, We have sent it (the Quran) down (to Muhammad, pbuh) as clear signs, evidences and proofs, and surely, Allah guides whom He wills.
Surah 22 Al-Hajj Verse 16
So those who believe and do righteous good deeds, for them is forgiveness and Rizqun Karim (generous provisions in Paradise). But those who strive against Our Ayat, to frustrate them, they will be the dwellers of the Hell-Fire.
Surah 22 Al-Hajj Verses 50-51
And those who, when they are reminded of the Ayat of their Lord, fall not deaf and blind thereat…Those will be rewarded with the highest place (in Paradise) because of their patience. Therein they shall be met with greetings and the word of peace and respect. Abiding therein – excellent it is as an abode, and a place to rest in.
Surah 25 Al-Furqan Verse 73/75-76
Verily, you cannot make the dead to hear nor can you make the deaf to hear the call, when they flee, turning their backs. Nor can you lead the blind out of their error. You can only make to hear those who believe in Our Ayat, and who have submitted (themselves to Allah in Islam).
Surah 27 An-Naml Verses 80-81
And let them not turn you (O Muhammad, pbuh) away from (preaching) the Ayat of Allah after they have been sent down to you; and invite (men) to (believe in) your Lord and be not of Al-Mushrikun.
Surah 28 Al-Qasas Verse 87
- Ayat here refers to the revelations and verses (of the Quran)
- Al-Mushrikun are those who associate partners with Allah and those who disbelieve in the Oneness of Allah and deny the Prophethood of Messenger Muhammad, pbuh.
And those who disbelieve in the Ayat of Allah and the Meeting with Him, it is they who have no hope of My Mercy, and it is they who will have a painful torment.
Surah 29 Al-Ankabut Verse 23
And as for those who disbelieved and denied Our Ayat, and the Meeting of the Hereafter, such shall be brought forth to the torment (in the Hell-Fire).
Surah 30 Ar-Rum Verse 16
And who does more wrong than he who is reminded of the Ayat of his Lord, then turns aside there from? Verily, We shall exact retribution from the Mujrimun (criminals, polytheists, disbelievers, sinners).
Surah 32 As-Sajdah Verse 22
- ‘Mujrimun’ – The Ayat are quite pervasive and cover a pretty wide range. Taken together, these Ayat consistently and emphatically impress upon man that he is neither without any God nor is he the servant of a multiplicity of gods. Rather, the only right course for him is to serve and worship the One True Allah. Furthermore, man has not been sent to this world as one who is absolutely free and unaccountable, as one endowed with the right to act as one pleases, nor as an irresponsible being accountable to no one. All possible measures have been taken by Allah to direct man to the Right Way. The truth has been explained to him in a myriad of ways. A whole range of Ayat provide for his admonition. He has also been granted the faculties of sight, hearing and rational thinking. So if a man turns a blind eye to all these Ayats, closes his ear to every admonition and instruction, and uses his head and heart to weave together warped philosophies of life, it would be no exaggeration to say that none is more criminal than man himself. Hence, when such a man returns to his Lord after completing his term of life, he certainly deserves severe punishment.
But those who strive against Our Ayat - to frustrate them – those, for them will be a severe painful torment.
Surah 34 Saba Verse 5
- As for the unbelievers who are not actively opposed to the true faith, their situation is somewhat different from the unbelievers engaged in active opposition. While the former will not escape chastisement, they will nonetheless be spared the kind of pain and grievous punishment earmarked for actively hostile unbelievers.
And those who strive against Our Ayat, to frustrate them, they will be brought to the torment.
Surah 34 Saba Verse 38
Allah is the Creator of all things, and He is the Wakil (Trustee, Disposer of affairs, Guardian) over all things. To Him belong the keys of the heavens and the earth. And those who disbelieve in the Ayat of Allah, such are they who will be the losers.
Surah 39 Az-Zumar Verse 62-63
And indeed Yusuf (Joseph) did come to you, in times gone by, with clear signs, but you ceased not to doubt in that which he did bring you, till when he died you said: ‘No Messenger will Allah send after him’. Thus, Allah leaves astray him who is a Musrif and a Murtab. Those who dispute about the Ayat of Allah, without any authority that has come to them, it is greatly hateful and disgusting to Allah and to those who believe. Thus does Allah seal up the heart of every arrogant, tyrant (so they cannot guide themselves to the Right Path).
Surah 40 Ghafir Verses 34-35
- Here Allah tells us that a righteous man, the believer from among the family of Firaun, warned his people of the punishment and decree of Allah.
- Musrif – refers to polytheists, oppressors, criminals and sinners who commit great sins.
- Murtab – one who doubts Allah’s warning and His Oneness.
- Allah ‘leaves astray’ only those who display the following traits:
- Those who exceed all limits of wickedness. Such people are so enamored of iniquity that they show no inclination to improve their moral conduct.
- Those who are disposed to entertain doubts about Prophets. They distrust them no matter how overwhelmingly persuasive the signs are that they produce to corroborate the truths of monotheism and Hereafter.
- Those who, rather than reflect on the Word of Allah rationally, are prone to presenting all kinds of silly objections to the same. In essence, the arguments of such people are neither supported by rational proof nor by any authoritative evidence derived from the Scriptures. Their whole argument from beginning to end is rooted in obstinacy and adamancy.
Wherever there is a group of people displaying these three major faults, Allah hurls them into the pit of error from which none has the power to pull them out.
- ‘seal up the heart’ – No one’s heart is sealed arbitrarily. It is only the arrogant and overbearing whose hearts are sealed. Puffed up with vain pride such people find it beneath their dignity to submit themselves to the truth. This trait is combined with an attitude of overbearingness made manifest in their high-handedness towards others. As a result, they find it hard to follow the restrictions placed upon them by law.
And those in the Fire will say to the keepers (angels) of Hell: ‘Call upon your Lord to lighten for us the torment for a day!’ They will say: ‘Did there not come to you, your Messengers with (clear) evidences (and signs)?’ They will say: ‘Yes’. They will reply: ‘Then call (as you like)! And the invocation of the disbelievers is nothing but in vain!’
Surah 40 Ghafir Verses 49-50
Verily, those who dispute about the Ayat of Allah, without any authority having come to them, there is nothing else in their breasts except pride. They will never have it. So seek refuge in Allah. Verily, it is He Who is the All-Hearer, the All-Seer.
Surah 40 Ghafir Verse 56
See you not those who dispute about the Ayat of Allah? How are they turning away (from truth)? Those who deny the Book (this Quran) and that with which We sent Our Messengers they will come to know.
Surah 40 Ghafir Verses 69-70
But surely, We shall cause those who disbelieve to taste a severe torment, and certainly, We shall requite them the worst of what they used to do. That is the recompense of the enemies of Allah: the Fire. Therein will be for them the eternal home, a (deserving) recompense for that they used to deny Our Ayat.
Surah 41 Fussilat Verses 27-28
Verily, those who pervert Our Ayat are not hidden from Us. Is he who is cast into the Fire better or he who comes secure on the Day of Resurrection? Do what you will. Verily, He is All-Seer of what you do.
Surah 41 Fussilat Verse 40
- ‘pervert’- The actual words are Yulhiduna Fi. The word ‘ilhad’ means to deviate, to turn away from the straight to the crooked way. Ibn Abbas said “Al-Ilhad means putting words in their improper places”. In other words, while going through the verses, instead of turning to the clear, explicit meaning of those verses one commits the mistake of forcing them to yield all kinds of erroneous meanings, thereby misleading one’s own self as well as others.
And those who dispute as regards Our Ayat may know that there is no place of refuge for them (from Allah’s punishment).
Surah 42 Ash-Shura Verse 35
(It will be said to the true believers of Islamic Monotheism :) My worshippers! No fear shall be on you this Day, nor shall you grieve. (You) who believed in Our Ayat and were Muslims. Enter Paradise, you and your wives, in happiness.
Surah 43 Az-Zukhruf Verses 68-70
And on the earth are signs for those who have Faith with certainty. And also in your own selves. Will you not then see?
Surah 51 Adh-Dhariyat Verses 20-21
- Allah says that there are signs on the earth that testify to the might of the Creator and His boundless ability. These signs include what Allah placed on the earth, the various plants, animals, valleys, mountains, deserts, rivers and oceans. He also created mankind with different languages, colors, intentions and abilities and a variety among them, differences in the power of understanding and comprehension, their deeds, and ultimately earning happiness or misery. Allah put every organ in the body in its rightful place where they most need it to be. Qatadah commented “He who thinks about his own creation will realize that he was created with flexible joints so that it is easy for him to perform act of worship”
And those who believe in Allah and His Messengers – they are Siddiqun and the martyrs with their Lord. They shall have their reward and their light. But those who disbelieve and deny Our Ayat – they shall be dwellers of the blazing Fire.
Surah 57 Al-Hadid Verse19
Has not the news reached you of those who disbelieved aforetime? And so, they tasted the evil result of their disbelief, and theirs will be a painful torment. That was because there came to them their Messengers with clear proofs (signs), but they said: ‘Shall mere men guide us?’ So they disbelieved and turned away. But Allah was not in need (of them). And Allah is Rich (free of all needs), Worthy of all praise.
Surah 64 At-Taghabun Verses 5-6
But those who disbelieved and denied Our Ayat, they will be the dwellers of the Fire, to dwell therein forever. And worst indeed is that destination.
Surah 64 At-Taghabun Verse 10
Truly Hell is a place of ambush – A dwelling place for the Taghun. They will abide therein for ages. Nothing cool shall they taste therein, nor any drink. Except boiling water, and dirty wound discharges – An exact recompense. For verily, they used not to look for a reckoning. But they denied Our Ayat completely.
Surah 78 An-Naba Verses 21-28
- Taghun – These are the disobedient rejecters who oppose the Messengers. It is also held to mean those who transgress the boundary limits set by Allah, like polytheists, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah, hypocrites, sinners and criminals.
- ‘ambush’ – The word mirsad denotes a spot which is especially chosen to entrap game; a spot where it is caught unawares. Hell is described as an ambush because Allah’s rebels, being unaware, are fearless of it. As a result, they strut about, considering the world to be simply a den for their own self-indulgence, altogether incognizant of the possibility of being caught and punished. Thus Hell, being hidden from their eyes is like an ambush wherein they are likely to be entrapped.
- ‘ages’ – The word ahqab used here denotes long periods of time, each period following the other in succession. Some misconstrue this word in the sense that while life in the Paradise will be eternal, it will not be so in Hell. For these periods not matter how long they are, will come to an end at some point. Such reasoning is flawed on the following two points:
- In idiomatic Arabic, ‘haqab’ stands for a period of time, which is bound to be followed by another period. These periods appear in quick succession. It is ,then, an unending phenomenon; and
- It is both unfair and reprehensible that a Quranic verse be interpreted in a sense that runs contrary to the thrust of other Quranic verses. On as many as 34 occasions, the Quran specifies that the inmates of Hell will remain there forever. In three instances, the point is further reinforced adding that it will be their eternal abode.
- ‘reckoning’ – an abode in which they would be taken to account
- ‘completely’ – This is the reason for their torment in Hell Fire. They rejected outright the divine guidance and signs conveyed to them by Allah’s Messengers, dismissing them as lies.
But those who disbelieved in Our Ayat, they are those on the Left Hand (the dwellers of Hell). The Fire will be shut over them.
Surah 90 Al-Balad Verses 19-20
- ‘shut over them’ – The term used is Mu’sadah, meaning it will be sealed over them and there will be no way for them to avoid it, nor will they have any way out.
- Ibn Masud recited this verse (V 90:20) and then said: “When those (who are destined to remain in Hell-Fire forever) will be thrown in the Hell-Fire, each of them will be put in a separate Tabut (box) of Fire, so that he will not see anyone punished in the Hell-Fire except he himself”. He would then recite (V 21:100)
