Deeds, Death, Reward and Punishment
بَلَىٰۚ مَن كَسَبَ سَيِّئَةٗ وَأَحَٰطَتۡ بِهِۦ خَطِيَٓٔتُهُۥ فَأُوْلَٰٓئِكَ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلنَّارِۖ هُمۡ فِيهَا خَٰلِدُونَ ٨١ وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡجَنَّةِۖ هُمۡ فِيهَا خَٰلِدُونَ ٨٢
Yes! Whoever earns evil and his sin has surrounded him, they are dwellers of the Fire (Hell); they will dwell therein forever. And those who believe and do righteous good deeds, they are dwellers of Paradise, they will dwell therein forever.
Surah 2 Al-Baqarah Verses 81-82
- ‘and his sin has surrounded him’ refers to:
- His Shirk has surrounded him
- Whoever dies before repenting from his wrongs
- Major sins
- Narrated Abdullah bin Masud that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘Beware of the belittled sins, because they gather on a person until they destroy him’
وَأَقِيمُواْ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتُواْ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَۚ وَمَا تُقَدِّمُواْ لِأَنفُسِكُم مِّنۡ خَيۡرٖ تَجِدُوهُ عِندَ ٱللَّهِۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ بَصِيرٞ ١١٠
And perform As-Salat and give Zakat, and whatever of good (deeds that Allah loves) you send forth for yourselves before you, you shall find it with Allah. Certainly, Allah is All-Seer of what you do.
Surah 2 Al-Baqarah Verse 110
- All-Seer – meaning that Allah is never unaware of the deeds of any person, nor will those deeds be lost by Him. Whether deeds are righteous or evil, Allah will award each according to what he or she deserves based on their deeds.
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ ٱتَّقُواْ ٱللَّهَ حَقَّ تُقَاتِهِۦ وَلَا تَمُوتُنَّ إِلَّا وَأَنتُم مُّسۡلِمُونَ ١٠٢
O you who believe! Fear Allah as He should be feared, and die not except in a state of Islam.
Surah 3 Al-Imran Verse 102
- ‘Fear Allah’ – that He is obeyed and not defied, remembered and not forgotten and appreciated and not unappreciated (Abdullah bin Masud)
- Narrated Jabir that three nights before the Prophet (pbuh) died he heard him say: ‘None of you should die except while having sincere trust in Allah, the Exalted and Most Honourable’
وَمَا كَانَ لِنَفۡسٍ أَن تَمُوتَ إِلَّا بِإِذۡنِ ٱللَّهِ كِتَٰبٗا مُّؤَجَّلٗاۗ وَمَن يُرِدۡ ثَوَابَ ٱلدُّنۡيَا نُؤۡتِهِۦ مِنۡهَا وَمَن يُرِدۡ ثَوَابَ ٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ نُؤۡتِهِۦ مِنۡهَاۚ وَسَنَجۡزِي ٱلشَّٰكِرِينَ ١٤٥
And no person can ever die except by Allah’s leave and at an appointed term. And whoever desires a reward in (this) world, We shall give him of it; and whoever desires a reward in the Hereafter, We shall give him thereof. And We shall reward the grateful.
Surah 3 Al-Imran Verse 145
- No one can either die before or survive the moment determined for death by Allah. Hence one should not waste one’s time thinking how to escape death. Instead, one should take stock of one’s activities and see whether one’s efforts have either been directed merely to one’s well being in this world or to well-being in the Hereafter.
- The word ‘sawab’ denotes recompense and reward. The ‘reward in this world’ signifies the totality of benefits and advantages which a man receives as a consequence of his actions and efforts within the confines of this world. The ‘reward in the Hereafter’ denotes the benefits that a man will receive in the lasting world to come as the fruits of his actions and efforts. From the Islamic point of view, the crucial question bearing upon human morals is whether a man keeps his attention focussed on the worldly results of his endeavours or on the results which accrue to him in the Next World
- The ones who are ‘grateful’ are those who fully appreciate Allah’s favour in making the true religion available to them, and thereby intimating to them knowledge of a realm that is infinitely vaster than this world. Such people appreciate that Allah has graciously informed them of the truth so that the consequences of human endeavour are not confined to the brief span of earthly life but cover a vast expanse, embracing both the present life and the much more important life of the Hereafter. A grateful man, having gained this breadth of outlook and long-range perception of ultimate consequences of things, persists in acts of righteousness out of his faith in Allah and his confidence in Allah’s assurance that they will bear fruit in the Hereafter. He does so even though he may sometimes find that, far from bearing fruit, righteousness leads to privation and suffering in this world
وَلَا يَحۡسَبَنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوٓاْ أَنَّمَا نُمۡلِي لَهُمۡ خَيۡرٞ لِّأَنفُسِهِمۡۚ إِنَّمَا نُمۡلِي لَهُمۡ لِيَزۡدَادُوٓاْ إِثۡمٗاۖ وَلَهُمۡ عَذَابٞ مُّهِينٞ ١٧٨
And let not the disbelievers think that Our postponing of their punishment is good for them. We postpone the punishment only so that they may increase in sinfulness. And for them is a disgraceful torment.
Surah 3 Al-Imran Verse 178
كُلُّ نَفۡسٖ ذَآئِقَةُ ٱلۡمَوۡتِۗ وَإِنَّمَا تُوَفَّوۡنَ أُجُورَكُمۡ يَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِيَٰمَةِۖ فَمَن زُحۡزِحَ عَنِ ٱلنَّارِ وَأُدۡخِلَ ٱلۡجَنَّةَ فَقَدۡ فَازَۗ وَمَا ٱلۡحَيَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنۡيَآ إِلَّا مَتَٰعُ ٱلۡغُرُورِ ١٨٥
Everyone shall taste death. And only on the Day of Resurrection shall you be paid your wages in full. And whosoever is removed away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise, he indeed is successful. The life of this world is only the enjoyment of deception.
Surah 3 Al-Imran Verse 185
- The fact that a person is outstandingly successful in life does not necessarily prove that he is either on the right path or is the recipient of any special favour from Allah. Similarly, even if a person is surrounded by trials and hardships, it does not prove that he has either strayed from the right way or is out of favour with Allah. The earthly results of a man’s actions are often quite different from the ones he will see in the Next Life. What is of true importance is what will happen in that eternal life than in this transient one
إِن تَجۡتَنِبُواْ كَبَآئِرَ مَا تُنۡهَوۡنَ عَنۡهُ نُكَفِّرۡ عَنكُمۡ سَئَِّاتِكُمۡ وَنُدۡخِلۡكُم مُّدۡخَلٗا كَرِيمٗا ٣١
If you avoid the great sins which you are forbidden to do, We shall expiate from you your (small) sins, and admit you to a Noble Entrance (Paradise).
Surah 4 An-Nisa Verse 31
- ‘great sins’ (in the light of various Ahadiths) refers to :
- To join in worship along with Allah
- To kill the life which Allah has forbidden except for a just cause
- Magic
- To consume Riba
- To consume an orphan’s wealth
- To run away from the battle field
- To accuse chaste woman
- Being undutiful to parents
- False testimony and false speech
- To kill your offspring for fear that he might share your food with you
- To commit adultery with your neighbour’s wife
- To curse one’s parents
- It has been held that three elements turn an act into sin:
- Violation of rights – be it either the rights of Allah, of parents, of other human beings or even of one’s own self. The greater a person’s right, the greater is the sin in violating them. Hence, sin is characterised in the Quran as wrong-doing (Zulm)
- Insufficient fear of Allah, and arrogance and indifference towards Him – as a result of which man does not heed Allah’s commandments, even wilfully violates them, and deliberately desists from carrying them out. The greater the brazenness, temerity and fearlessness of disobedience, the more heinous is the sin in the eyes of Allah. It is for this reason that sin is also termed disobedience (Ma’siyah) and fisq (transgression).
- Sin is aggravated by breaking those bonds and relationships on which peace and tranquillity of social order rest. These bonds include the relationship between a man and his Lord, as well as that between a man and his fellow-beings. The more important a bond is, the greater is the harm done to the peace of society and so the gravity of sin increases. This is why in certain places Quran uses the term ‘fujur’ to denote sin
أَيۡنَمَا تَكُونُواْ يُدۡرِككُّمُ ٱلۡمَوۡتُ وَلَوۡ كُنتُمۡ فِي بُرُوجٖ مُّشَيَّدَةٖۗ وَإِن تُصِبۡهُمۡ حَسَنَةٞ يَقُولُواْ هَٰذِهِۦ مِنۡ عِندِ ٱللَّهِۖ وَإِن تُصِبۡهُمۡ سَيِّئَةٞ يَقُولُواْ هَٰذِهِۦ مِنۡ عِندِكَۚ قُلۡ كُلّٞ مِّنۡ عِندِ ٱللَّهِۖ فَمَالِ هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ ٱلۡقَوۡمِ لَا يَكَادُونَ يَفۡقَهُونَ حَدِيثٗا ٧٨ مَّآ أَصَابَكَ مِنۡ حَسَنَةٖ فَمِنَ ٱللَّهِۖ وَمَآ أَصَابَكَ مِن سَيِّئَةٖ فَمِن نَّفۡسِكَۚ وَأَرۡسَلۡنَٰكَ لِلنَّاسِ رَسُولٗاۚ وَكَفَىٰ بِٱللَّهِ شَهِيدٗا ٧٩
‘Wheresoever you may be, death will overtake you even if you are in fortress built up strong and high!’ And if some good reaches them, they say ‘This is from Allah’, but if some evil befalls them, they say, ‘This is from you (O Muhammad, pbuh)’. Say: ‘All things are from Allah’ so what is wrong with these people that they fail to understand any word? Whatever of good reaches you, is from Allah, but whatever of evil befalls you, is from yourself. And We have sent you (O Muhammad, pbuh) as a Messenger to mankind, and Allah is sufficient as a Witness.
Surah 4 An-Nisa Verses 78-79
- Allah’s statement that things are from Him means everything occurs by the decision and decree of Allah, and His decision shall come to pass for both the righteous and the wicked, the faithful and the disbelievers.
- ‘from yourself’ means because of you and due to your actions; because of your error; as a punishment for you.
- Narrated Jabir bin Abdullah that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘I have been given five (things) which were not given to anyone before me:
- Allah made me victorious by awe (by His frightening my enemies) for a distance of one month’s journey
- The earth has been made for me (and for my followers) a place of praying and a thing to purify (perform tayammum). Therefore, anyone of my followers can pray wherever he is, at the time of prayer.
- The booty has been made halal (lawful) to me yet it was not lawful to anyone else before me
- I have been given the right to intercession (on the Day of Resurrection)
- Every Prophet used to be sent to his nation only, but I have been sent to all mankind’
وَمَن يَكۡسِبۡ إِثۡمٗا فَإِنَّمَا يَكۡسِبُهُۥ عَلَىٰ نَفۡسِهِۦۚ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ عَلِيمًا حَكِيمٗا ١١١ وَمَن يَكۡسِبۡ خَطِيَٓٔةً أَوۡ إِثۡمٗا ثُمَّ يَرۡمِ بِهِۦ بَرِيٓٔٗا فَقَدِ ٱحۡتَمَلَ بُهۡتَٰنٗا وَإِثۡمٗا مُّبِينٗا ١١٢
And whoever earns sins, he earns it only against himself. And Allah is Ever All-Knowing, All-Wise. And whoever earns a fault or a sin and then throws it on to someone innocent, he has indeed burdened himself with falsehood and a manifest sin.
Surah 4 An-Nisa Verses 111-112
لَّيۡسَ بِأَمَانِيِّكُمۡ وَلَآ أَمَانِيِّ أَهۡلِ ٱلۡكِتَٰبِۗ مَن يَعۡمَلۡ سُوٓءٗا يُجۡزَ بِهِۦ وَلَا يَجِدۡ لَهُۥ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ وَلِيّٗا وَلَا نَصِيرٗا ١٢٣
It will not be in accordance with your desires (Muslims) nor those of the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians), whosoever works evil, will have the recompense thereof, and he will not find any protector or helper besides Allah.
Surah 4 An-Nisa Verse 123
- The Ayah indicates that the religion is not accepted on account of wishful thinking or mere hopes. Rather, the accepted religion relies on what resides in the heart and which is made truthful through actions.
- When this Ayah was revealed, it was hard on Muslims. The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said to them: ‘Be steadfast and seek closeness; Everything that afflicts a Muslim, even the thorn that pierces his skin and the hardship he suffers, will be an expiation for him’
- Narrated Aishah ‘I said “O Messenger of Allah! I know the hardest Ayah in the Quran”. He said: ‘What is it, O Aishah!’ I said “whoever works evil, will have the recompense thereof”’
مَّن كَانَ يُرِيدُ ثَوَابَ ٱلدُّنۡيَا فَعِندَ ٱللَّهِ ثَوَابُ ٱلدُّنۡيَا وَٱلۡأٓخِرَةِۚ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ سَمِيعَۢا بَصِيرٗا ١٣٤
Whoever desires a reward in this life of the world, then with Allah (Alone and none else) is the reward of this worldly life and of the Hereafter. And Allah is Ever All Hearer, All Seer.
Surah 4 An-Nisa Verse 134
- God alone has the power to dispense the good of this world as well as that of the Hereafter, to lavish transient benefits as well as abiding felicity. It all depends on a man’s nature and the extent of his ambition what kind of benefit he seeks from God. If a man is infatuated with the fleeting benefits of this world, and is prepared to sacrifice the benefits of the everlasting life, then God will grant him only the good of this world and he will have no share in the good of the Hereafter.
- People should not entertain the illusion that they have the power to make or mar the destinies of others, that if they were to withdraw their support, people would be left helpless. The fact is that the destinies of all lie in the Hand of God alone and He need not remain dependent upon any single person as the sole instrument for helping any particular creature. The resources of the Lord of the heavens and the earth are limitless and He also knows how to use those resources.
مَّا يَفۡعَلُ ٱللَّهُ بِعَذَابِكُمۡ إِن شَكَرۡتُمۡ وَءَامَنتُمۡۚ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ شَاكِرًا عَلِيمٗا ١٤٧
Why should Allah punish you if you have thanked (Him) and have believed in Him. And Allah is Ever All-Appreciative (of good), All-Knowing.
Surah 4 An-Nisa Verse 147
- ‘thanked’ – Shukr denotes an acknowledgement of benefaction and a feeling of gratitude. This attitude consists of:
- Acknowledgement of benefaction in one’s heart
- Confession of benefaction in one’s speech; and
- Manifestation of benefaction in one’s deeds
Such an attitude requires:
- That a man should ascribe the benefactions to its real source, letting no one share in either the gratitude or the acknowledgement of benefaction
- That his heart should be overflowing with love for, and loyalty to, the Benefactor, and that he should have no attachments to His opponents; and
- That he should obey the Benefactor and should not use His bounties contrary to His directives
أَلَمۡ يَرَوۡاْ كَمۡ أَهۡلَكۡنَا مِن قَبۡلِهِم مِّن قَرۡنٖ مَّكَّنَّٰهُمۡ فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ مَا لَمۡ نُمَكِّن لَّكُمۡ وَأَرۡسَلۡنَا ٱلسَّمَآءَ عَلَيۡهِم مِّدۡرَارٗا وَجَعَلۡنَا ٱلۡأَنۡهَٰرَ تَجۡرِي مِن تَحۡتِهِمۡ فَأَهۡلَكۡنَٰهُم بِذُنُوبِهِمۡ وَأَنشَأۡنَا مِنۢ بَعۡدِهِمۡ قَرۡنًا ءَاخَرِينَ ٦
Have they not seen how many a generation before them We have destroyed whom We had established on the earth such as We have not established you? And We poured out on them rain from the sky in abundance, and made the rivers flow under them. Yet, We destroyed them for their sins, and We created after them other generations.
Surah 6 Al-An’am Verse 6
قَدۡ خَسِرَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَذَّبُواْ بِلِقَآءِ ٱللَّهِۖ حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا جَآءَتۡهُمُ ٱلسَّاعَةُ بَغۡتَةٗ قَالُواْ يَٰحَسۡرَتَنَا عَلَىٰ مَا فَرَّطۡنَا فِيهَا وَهُمۡ يَحۡمِلُونَ أَوۡزَارَهُمۡ عَلَىٰ ظُهُورِهِمۡۚ أَلَا سَآءَ مَا يَزِرُونَ ٣١
They indeed are losers who denied their Meeting with Allah, until all of a sudden, the Hour (signs of death) is on them, and they say: ‘Alas for us that we gave no thought to it’, while they will bear their burdens on their back; and evil indeed are the burdens that they will bear.
Surah 6 Al-An’am Verse 31
- As-Suddi said: “Upon entering the grave, every unjust person will meet a man with an ugly face, dark skin, awful odour, wearing dirty clothes, who will enter his grave with him. When the unjust person sees him, he will say, “How ugly is your face!” He will reply, “So was your work, it was ugly”. The unjust person will say, “How foul is the odour coming from you!” He will reply, “Such was the case with your work, it stunk”. The unjust person will say, “How dirty are your clothes!” He will reply, “And your work too was dirty”. The unjust person will ask, “Who are you?” He will reply, “I am your deeds”. So he will remain with the unjust person in his grave, and when he is resurrected on the Day of Resurrection, his companion will say to him, “In the life of the world, I used to carry you because you followed desire and lust. Today, you carry me” So he will ride on the unjust person’s back and lead him until he enters Hell Fire [‘burdens that they will bear’]
۞إِنَّمَا يَسۡتَجِيبُ ٱلَّذِينَ يَسۡمَعُونَۘ وَٱلۡمَوۡتَىٰ يَبۡعَثُهُمُ ٱللَّهُ ثُمَّ إِلَيۡهِ يُرۡجَعُونَ ٣٦
It is only those who listen will respond, but as for the dead, Allah will raise them up, then to Him they will be returned.
Surah 6 Al-An’am Verse 36
- ‘listen’ refers to only those who hear the speech (of Muhammad, pbuh) comprehend and understand it and accept his call
- ‘dead’ refers to the disbelievers because their hearts are dead. Therefore, Allah resembled them to dead corpses as a way of mocking and belittling them
- Again, ‘those who listen’ refers to those whose consciences are alive, who have not atrophied their intellect and reason, and who have not closed their hearts to the truth out of irrational prejudice and mental inflexibility. In contrast to such people are those who are characterised as dead – who blindly follow the old familiar beaten tracks, and can never deviate from the ways they have inherited, even when these ways are plainly at variance with the truths
لِّكُلِّ نَبَإٖ مُّسۡتَقَرّٞۚ وَسَوۡفَ تَعۡلَمُونَ ٦٧
For every news there is a reality, and you will come to know.
Surah 6 Al-An’am verse 67
- For everything there is an appointed term and for every deed there is a recompense
وَذَرُواْ ظَٰهِرَ ٱلۡإِثۡمِ وَبَاطِنَهُۥٓۚ إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يَكۡسِبُونَ ٱلۡإِثۡمَ سَيُجۡزَوۡنَ بِمَا كَانُواْ يَقۡتَرِفُونَ ١٢٠
Leave (O mankind, all kinds of) sin, open and secret. Verily, those who commit sin will get due recompense for what they used to commit.
Surah 6 Al-An’am Verse 120
- The Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘The sin is that which you find in your heart and you dislike that people became aware of it’
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ فَرَّقُواْ دِينَهُمۡ وَكَانُواْ شِيَعٗا لَّسۡتَ مِنۡهُمۡ فِي شَيۡءٍۚ إِنَّمَآ أَمۡرُهُمۡ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ ثُمَّ يُنَبِّئُهُم بِمَا كَانُواْ يَفۡعَلُونَ ١٥٩
Whoever brings a good deed shall have ten times the like thereof to his credit, and whoever brings an evil deed shall have only the recompense of the like thereof, and they will not be wronged.
Surah 6 Al-An’am Verse 159
- Narrated Ibn Abbas that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘Allah ordered (the appointed angels over you) that the good and the bad deeds to be written, and then showed (the way) how (to write). If somebody intends to do a good deed and he does not do it, then Allah will write for him a full good deed (in his account with Him); and if he intends to do a good deed and actually did it, then Allah will write for him (in his account) with Him (its reward equal) from ten to seven hundred times, to many more times; and if somebody intends to do a bad deed and he does not do it, then Allah will write a full good deed (in his account) with Him, and if he intended to do it (a bad deed) and actually did it, then Allah will write one bad deed (in his account)’
- Know that there are three types of people who refrain from committing a sin that they intended:
- Who refrain from committing a sin that they intended because they fear Allah, and this will have written for them a good deed as a reward
- Who does not commit the sin because of forgetting or being busy attending to other affairs, he will neither earn a sin nor a reward
- Who abandon the sin because he was unable to commit it or due to laziness, after trying to commit it and seeking the means that help commit it; he is just like the person who commits the sin
وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ لَا نُكَلِّفُ نَفۡسًا إِلَّا وُسۡعَهَآ أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡجَنَّةِۖ هُمۡ فِيهَا خَٰلِدُونَ ٤٢ وَنَزَعۡنَا مَا فِي صُدُورِهِم مِّنۡ غِلّٖ تَجۡرِي مِن تَحۡتِهِمُ ٱلۡأَنۡهَٰرُۖ وَقَالُواْ ٱلۡحَمۡدُ لِلَّهِ ٱلَّذِي هَدَىٰنَا لِهَٰذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لِنَهۡتَدِيَ لَوۡلَآ أَنۡ هَدَىٰنَا ٱللَّهُۖ لَقَدۡ جَآءَتۡ رُسُلُ رَبِّنَا بِٱلۡحَقِّۖ وَنُودُوٓاْ أَن تِلۡكُمُ ٱلۡجَنَّةُ أُورِثۡتُمُوهَا بِمَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ ٤٣
But those who believed and worked righteousness – We tax not any person beyond his scope – such are the dwellers of Paradise. They will abide therein forever. And We shall remove from their breast any (mutual) hatred or sense of injury (which they had, if at all, in the life of this world); rivers flowing under them, and they will say: ‘All praise and thanks are Allah’s, Who has guided us to this, and never could we have found guidance, were it not that Allah had guided us! Indeed, the Messengers of our Lord did come with the truth’. And it will be cried out to them: ‘This is the Paradise which you have inherited for what you used to do’.
Surah 7 Al-A’raf Verses 42-43
- Narrated Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘Each of the people of Paradise will see his seat in the Fire and he will say, “Had not Allah guided me!” And this will cause him to be grateful. Each of the people of the Fire will see his seat in Paradise, and he will say, “Might that Allah had guided me!” So it will be a cause of anguish for him’
- ‘…for what you used to do’ – Allah shall not impress His bounty upon the righteous; He will rather emphasize that Paradise is granted to them by way of compensation for their righteous conduct, that it is a fruit of their hard labour, that it is not like the crumbs of charity but a fair recompense for their striving. The subtlety involved here is further brought out by the fact that the above recompense will not be made by Allah. It will rather be just announced to them.
- ‘…never could we have found guidance…’ – What is said about the Hereafter may be discerned in the attitude of the righteous in the world itself. The wicked and the arrogant ones take great pride in their worldly attainments and ascribe them to their own efforts. Conversely, the righteous look upon all the bounties which they receive as favours from Allah. The more they are lavished with worldly favours, the humbler and more generous they become. Moreover, they do not suffer from the illusion that their righteousness will certainly earn them their salvation. On the contrary, they consistently repent over their lapses and earnestly turn to Allah in the hope that He will pardon them out of His Grace and Mercy. They are always fearful of Allah’s reckoning lest their evil deeds are found to outweigh their good deeds. According to a tradition the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘Know well that none will be able to enter Paradise by dint of his good deeds’ When asked if that would apply to him as well, he replied: ‘Yes, in my case as well; unless Allah covers me with His mercy and favour’
وَٱلَّذِينَ كَذَّبُواْ بَِٔايَٰتِنَا وَلِقَآءِ ٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ حَبِطَتۡ أَعۡمَٰلُهُمۡۚ هَلۡ يُجۡزَوۡنَ إِلَّا مَا كَانُواْ يَعۡمَلُونَ ١٤٧
Those who deny Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, revelations) and the Meeting in the Hereafter (Day of Resurrection), vain are their deeds. Are they requited with anything except what they used to do?
Surah 7 Al-Araf verse 147
- That the acts of such persons are vain and fruitless is evident from the fact that acceptance of man’s acts by Allah is subject to two conditions:
- One’s acts should conform to the law laid down by Allah
- One should be prompted by the desire to achieve success in the Hereafter rather than merely in this world
وَٱلَّذِينَ يُمَسِّكُونَ بِٱلۡكِتَٰبِ وَأَقَامُواْ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ إِنَّا لَا نُضِيعُ أَجۡرَ ٱلۡمُصۡلِحِينَ ١٧٠
And as for those who hold fast the Book and perform As-Salat, certainly We shall never waste the reward of those who do righteous deeds.
Surah 7 Al-A’raf Verse 170
- ‘hold fast’ – adhere to its teachings, implement its commands and refrain from its prohibitions
وَلَوۡ تَرَىٰٓ إِذۡ يَتَوَفَّى ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ ٱلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ يَضۡرِبُونَ وُجُوهَهُمۡ وَأَدۡبَٰرَهُمۡ وَذُوقُواْ عَذَابَ ٱلۡحَرِيقِ ٥٠ ذَٰلِكَ بِمَا قَدَّمَتۡ أَيۡدِيكُمۡ وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَيۡسَ بِظَلَّٰمٖ لِّلۡعَبِيدِ ٥١
ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَمۡ يَكُ مُغَيِّرٗا نِّعۡمَةً أَنۡعَمَهَا عَلَىٰ قَوۡمٍ حَتَّىٰ يُغَيِّرُواْ مَا بِأَنفُسِهِمۡ وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٞ ٥٣
And if you could see when the angels take away the souls of those who disbelieve (at death); they smite their faces and their backs, (saying): ‘Taste the punishment of the Blazing Fire’. This is because of that which your hands have forwarded. And verily, Allah is not unjust to His slaves…. That is so because Allah will never change a grace which He has bestowed on a people until they change what is in their own selves. And verily Allah is All-Hearer, All-Knower.
Surah 8 Al-Anfal Verses 50-51/53
- A Hadith states that ‘When the angel of death attends the disbeliever at the time of death, he comes to him in a terrifying and disgusting shape, saying “Get out, O wicked soul, to fierce hot wind, boiling water and shadow of black smoke”. The disbelievers’ soul then scatters throughout his body, but the angels retrieve it, just as a needle is retrieved from the wet wool. In this case veins and nerve cells will be still attached to the soul’
- Narrated Abu Dharr that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘Allah, the Exalted, said: “O my servants! I have prohibited injustice for myself, and made it prohibited to you between each other. Therefore, do not commit injustice against each other. O My servants! It is your deeds that I am keeping count of, so whoever found something good, let him praise Allah for it; whoever found other than that, has only himself to blame”’
۞وَمَآ أُبَرِّئُ نَفۡسِيٓۚ إِنَّ ٱلنَّفۡسَ لَأَمَّارَةُۢ بِٱلسُّوٓءِ إِلَّا مَا رَحِمَ رَبِّيٓۚ إِنَّ رَبِّي غَفُورٞ رَّحِيمٞ ٥٣
[Yusuf (Joseph), pbuh said] ‘And I free not myself (from the blame). Verily, the (human) self is inclined to evil, except when my Lord bestows His mercy (upon whom He wills). Verily, my Lord is Oft-Forgiving Most-Merciful’.
Surah 12 Yusuf Verse 53
لَهُۥ مُعَقِّبَٰتٞ مِّنۢ بَيۡنِ يَدَيۡهِ وَمِنۡ خَلۡفِهِۦ يَحۡفَظُونَهُۥ مِنۡ أَمۡرِ ٱللَّهِۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يُغَيِّرُ مَا بِقَوۡمٍ حَتَّىٰ يُغَيِّرُواْ مَا بِأَنفُسِهِمۡۗ وَإِذَآ أَرَادَ ٱللَّهُ بِقَوۡمٖ سُوٓءٗا فَلَا مَرَدَّ لَهُۥۚ وَمَا لَهُم مِّن دُونِهِۦ مِن وَالٍ ١١
For him (each person), there are angels in succession, before and behind him. They guard him by the Command of Allah. Verily, Allah will not change the condition of a people as long as they do not change their state themselves. But when Allah wills a people’s punishment, there can be no turning it back, and they will find besides Him no protector.
Surah 13 Ar-Ra’d Verse 11
- There are two angels one to the left of each person and one to the right recording the deeds. The angel to the right records the good deeds, while the angel to the left records the evil deeds. There are also two angels that guard and protect each person, one from the back and one from the front. Therefore, there are four angels that surround each person by day and they are replaced by four at night, two scribes and two guards.
- An authentic Hadith states: ‘Angels take turns around you, some at night and some by day, and all of them assemble together at the time of Fajr and Asr prayers. Then those who have stayed with you throughout the night ascend to Allah Who asks them, and He knows the answer better than they about you, “How have you left My servant?” They reply “As we found them praying, we have left them praying”’
- Narrated Abdullah that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘Verily, every one among you has his companion from the Jinn and his companion from the angels’
مَّثَلُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ بِرَبِّهِمۡۖ أَعۡمَٰلُهُمۡ كَرَمَادٍ ٱشۡتَدَّتۡ بِهِ ٱلرِّيحُ فِي يَوۡمٍ عَاصِفٖۖ لَّا يَقۡدِرُونَ مِمَّا كَسَبُواْ عَلَىٰ شَيۡءٖۚ ذَٰلِكَ هُوَ ٱلضَّلَٰلُ ٱلۡبَعِيدُ ١٨
The parable of those who disbelieved in their Lord is that their works are as ashes, on which the wind blows furiously on a stormy day; they shall not be able to get aught of what they have earned. That is the straying, far away (from the Right Path).
Surah 14 Ibrahim Verse 18
مَنۡ عَمِلَ صَٰلِحٗا مِّن ذَكَرٍ أَوۡ أُنثَىٰ وَهُوَ مُؤۡمِنٞ فَلَنُحۡيِيَنَّهُۥ حَيَوٰةٗ طَيِّبَةٗۖ وَلَنَجۡزِيَنَّهُمۡ أَجۡرَهُم بِأَحۡسَنِ مَا كَانُواْ يَعۡمَلُونَ ٩٧
Whoever works righteousness – whether male or female – while he (or she) is a true believer, verily, to him We will give a good life, and We shall pay them certainly a reward in proportion to the best of what they used to do.
Surah 16 An-Nahl Verse 97
- ‘good life’ – this is interpreted as:
- Feeling tranquillity in all aspects of life
- Good, lawful provisions (Ibn Abbas)
- Contentment (Ali bin Abi talib)
- Happiness (Ibn Abbas)
- Lawful provisions and worship in this life (Ad-Dahhak)
- Working to obey Allah and finding joy in that
- Narrated Abdullah bin Amr that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘He who submits (becomes a Muslim) has succeeded, is given sufficient provisions, and is content with Allah for what he is given’
- The verse aims at removing the misunderstanding that consists of the belief that one who follows the path of truth, honesty and righteousness, is bound to ruin his worldly life; that at best such a person may be able to achieve success in the Next Life, but as far as this world is concerned no good results can be expected. In response, it is pointed out that such a supposition is altogether erroneous. Those who are righteous, straightforward in their dealings, and virtuous in their conduct are perceptibly better even in their worldly life than those who are devoid of faith and good morals
- ‘best of what they used to do’ – A person who does good deeds in the present world - be they of major or minor significance – will be generously rewarded in the Next life
إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ مَعَ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱتَّقَواْ وَّٱلَّذِينَ هُم مُّحۡسِنُونَ ١٢٨
Truly Allah is with those who fear Him and those who are Muhsinun.
Surah 16 An-Nahl Verse 128
- Narrated Abu Hurayrah that Allah’s Messenger (pbuh) said: ‘The deeds of anyone of you will not save you (from Hell)’. They said “Even you, O Allah’s Messenger?” He said ‘No. even I (will not be saved) unless and until Allah bestows His Mercy on me and protects me with His Grace. Therefore, do good deeds properly, sincerely and moderately, and worship Allah in the forenoon and in the afternoon and during a part of the night, and always adopt a middle, moderate, regular course whereby you will reach your target (Paradise)’
مَّن كَانَ يُرِيدُ ٱلۡعَاجِلَةَ عَجَّلۡنَا لَهُۥ فِيهَا مَا نَشَآءُ لِمَن نُّرِيدُ ثُمَّ جَعَلۡنَا لَهُۥ جَهَنَّمَ يَصۡلَىٰهَا مَذۡمُومٗا مَّدۡحُورٗا ١٨ وَمَنۡ أَرَادَ ٱلۡأٓخِرَةَ وَسَعَىٰ لَهَا سَعۡيَهَا وَهُوَ مُؤۡمِنٞ فَأُوْلَٰٓئِكَ كَانَ سَعۡيُهُم مَّشۡكُورٗا ١٩ كُلّٗا نُّمِدُّ هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ وَهَٰٓؤُلَآءِ مِنۡ عَطَآءِ رَبِّكَۚ وَمَا كَانَ عَطَآءُ رَبِّكَ مَحۡظُورًا ٢٠
Whoever desires the quick-passing (transitory enjoyments of this world), We readily grant him what We will for whom We like. Then, afterwards, We have appointed for him Hell; he will burn therein disgraced and rejected (far away from Allah’s Mercy). And whoever desires the Hereafter and strives for it, with the necessary effort due for it, while he is a believer, then such are the ones whose striving shall be appreciated (rewarded by Allah). On each these as well as those We bestow from the bounties of your Lord. And the bounties of your Lord can never be forbidden.
Surah 17 Al-Isra Verse 18-20
- ‘On each’ – meaning, on each of the two groups, those who desire this world and those who desire the Hereafter
وَلَا تَقۡتُلُوٓاْ أَوۡلَٰدَكُمۡ خَشۡيَةَ إِمۡلَٰقٖۖ نَّحۡنُ نَرۡزُقُهُمۡ وَإِيَّاكُمۡۚ إِنَّ قَتۡلَهُمۡ كَانَ خِطۡٔٗا كَبِيرٗا ٣١ وَلَا تَقۡرَبُواْ ٱلزِّنَىٰٓۖ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ فَٰحِشَةٗ وَسَآءَ سَبِيلٗا ٣٢
And kill not your children for fear of poverty. We shall provide for them as well as for you. Surely, the killing of them is a great sin. And come not near to unlawful sex. Verily, it is a Fahishah and an evil way.
Surah 17 Al-Isra Verses 31-32
- ‘come not near’ – refers to the requirement that individuals should not only shun fornication, but also to strictly stay away from all that leads to it. To this end, all possible measures – legislation, education, reform of public life, and a healthy restructuring of society – all should be effectively employed
- ‘Fahishah’ – anything that transgresses its limits; a great sin
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ إِنَّا لَا نُضِيعُ أَجۡرَ مَنۡ أَحۡسَنَ عَمَلًا ٣٠
Verily, as for those who believed and did righteous deeds, certainly We shall not make the reward of anyone who does his (righteous) deeds in the most perfect manner to be lost.
Surah 18 Al-Kahf Verse 30
ٱلۡمَالُ وَٱلۡبَنُونَ زِينَةُ ٱلۡحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡيَاۖ وَٱلۡبَٰقِيَٰتُ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتُ خَيۡرٌ عِندَ رَبِّكَ ثَوَابٗا وَخَيۡرٌ أَمَلٗا ٤٦
Wealth and children are the adornment of the life of this world. But the good righteous deeds that last are better with your Lord for rewards and better in respect of hope.
Surah 18 Al-Kahf Verse 46
- ‘good righteous deeds that last’ refers to:
- Five daily prayers (Ibn Abbas)
- Subhan Allah, Alhamdulillah, La ilaha illallah and Allah-u-Akbar [Glory be to Allah; Praise be to Allah; there is none worthy of worship except Allah; Allah is Most Great] – recitation thereof (Said bin Jubayr)
- Lailahaillallah, Subhan Allah, Alhamdulillah, Allah-o-Akbar and La hawla wala quuwata illa billah hil aliyil Azim [last: there is no strength and no power except with Allah, the Exalted, the Almighty] – recitation thereof (Uthman)
- Ibn Abbas also added “remembrance of Allah saying (apart from above) Tabarak Allah, Astagfirallah, Sallallahu ‘ala Rasul Allah” and Fasting, Prayer, Hajj, Sadaqah (charity), freeing slaves, Jihad, maintaining ties of kinship, and all other good deeds
- Good words
- All righteous deeds (Abdur Rahman bin Zayd)
- It has been recorded that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘Well done for five things! (How heavy they will weigh in the balance!): La ilaha illallah, Allah-u-Akbar, Subhan Allah, and Alhamdu lillah, and a righteous son who dies and his parents seek the reward of Allah’ and he said: ‘Well done! Well done for five things! Whoever meets Allah believing in them, he will enter Paradise: if he believes in Allah, the Last Day, Paradise and Hell, Resurrection after death, and the Reckoning’
وَيَزِيدُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱهۡتَدَوۡاْ هُدٗىۗ وَٱلۡبَٰقِيَٰتُ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتُ خَيۡرٌ عِندَ رَبِّكَ ثَوَابٗا وَخَيۡرٞ مَّرَدًّا ٧٦
And Allah increases in guidance those who walk aright. And the righteous good deeds that last are better with your Lord for reward and better for resort.
Surah 19 Maryam Verse 76
- Whenever adherents of truth are put to test, Allah grants them the ability to judge correctly and to follow the right path. Allah also protects them from evil and from error. They are constantly helped by Allah’s guidance which enables them to proceed ahead along the right path
- ‘resort’ – final outcome; conducive to a better end
كُلُّ نَفۡسٖ ذَآئِقَةُ ٱلۡمَوۡتِۗ وَنَبۡلُوكُم بِٱلشَّرِّ وَٱلۡخَيۡرِ فِتۡنَةٗۖ وَإِلَيۡنَا تُرۡجَعُونَ ٣٥
Everyone is going to taste death, and We shall make a trial of you with evil and with good. And to Us you will be returned.
Surah 21 Al-Anbiya Verse 35
- ‘trial’ means:
- We shall test you, sometimes with difficulties and sometimes with ease, to see who will give thanks and who will be ungrateful, who will have patience and who will despair
- We shall test you, with difficulties and with times of prosperity, with health and sickness, with richness and poverty, with lawful and unlawful, obedience and sin, with guidance and misguidance
- ‘returned’ – We will requite you according to your deeds
فَمَن يَعۡمَلۡ مِنَ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ وَهُوَ مُؤۡمِنٞ فَلَا كُفۡرَانَ لِسَعۡيِهِۦ وَإِنَّا لَهُۥ كَٰتِبُونَ ٩٤
So whoever does righteous good deeds while he is a believer (in Islamic Monotheism) his efforts will not be rejected. Verily, We record it for him (in his Book of Deeds).
Surah 21 Al-Anbiya Verse 94
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ هُم مِّنۡ خَشۡيَةِ رَبِّهِم مُّشۡفِقُونَ ٥٧ وَٱلَّذِينَ هُم بَِٔايَٰتِ رَبِّهِمۡ يُؤۡمِنُونَ ٥٨ وَٱلَّذِينَ هُم بِرَبِّهِمۡ لَا يُشۡرِكُونَ ٥٩ وَٱلَّذِينَ يُؤۡتُونَ مَآ ءَاتَواْ وَّقُلُوبُهُمۡ وَجِلَةٌ أَنَّهُمۡ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِمۡ رَٰجِعُونَ ٦٠ أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ يُسَٰرِعُونَ فِي ٱلۡخَيۡرَٰتِ وَهُمۡ لَهَا سَٰبِقُونَ ٦١
Verily, those who live in awe for fear of their Lord; and those who believe in the Ayat of their Lord; and those who join not anyone as partners with their Lord; and those that give that which they give with their hearts full of fear, because they are sure to return to their Lord. It is these who hasten in the good deeds, and they are foremost in them.
Surah 23 Al-Muminun Verses 57-61
- ‘live in awe’ – means even though they have faith and do righteous deeds, they are still in awe of Him and fear Him and His hidden plan for them, as Al Hasan Al Basri said, “The believer combines Ihsan (perfection) with awe, while the disbelievers combine evil deeds with a sense of security”
- Ayat – refers to signs, and it is of two kinds:
- Which are brought forward by the Prophets on behalf of Allah
- That are found within man as well as those that are scattered around the universe
- ‘those who give’ – The word ita’ in Arabic usage is not only confined to giving money or something material. Thus giving, in the Verse, also includes giving oneself to Allah in obedience and servitude. Believers despite fully exerting themselves in acts of devotion and virtue, remain anxious for they are unsure whether or not their deeds will find Allah’s acceptance. They are also uncertain about whether their deeds will outweigh their sins, and whether these good will suffice to earn them Allah’s forgiveness. Narrated Aishah: I said “O Messenger of Allah (pbuh) Are these the ones who steal and commit Zina and drink alcohol while fearing Allah? (about the Verse above)” The Prophet (pbuh) replied: ‘No, O daughter of As-Siddiq, they are the ones who pray and fast and give in charity while fearing that it will not be accepted from them. It is these who hasten in the good deeds’
۞يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ لَا تَتَّبِعُواْ خُطُوَٰتِ ٱلشَّيۡطَٰنِۚ وَمَن يَتَّبِعۡ خُطُوَٰتِ ٱلشَّيۡطَٰنِ فَإِنَّهُۥ يَأۡمُرُ بِٱلۡفَحۡشَآءِ وَٱلۡمُنكَرِۚ وَلَوۡلَا فَضۡلُ ٱللَّهِ عَلَيۡكُمۡ وَرَحۡمَتُهُۥ مَا زَكَىٰ مِنكُم مِّنۡ أَحَدٍ أَبَدٗا وَلَٰكِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُزَكِّي مَن يَشَآءُۗ وَٱللَّهُ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٞ ٢١
O you who believe! Follow not the footsteps of Shaitan (Satan). And whosoever follows the footsteps of Shaitan, then, verily, he commands Al-Fahisha and Al-Munkar. And had it not been for the Grace of Allah and His Mercy on you, not one of you would ever have been pure from sins. But Allah purifies whom He wills, and Allah is All-Hearer, All-Knower.
Surah 24 An-Nur Verse 21
- ‘footsteps of Shaitan’ – means:
- His deeds
- His evil whispers
- Every sin
- Vowing to commit sin
- ‘Grace of Allah’ – Had Allah not made what is good distinct from what is evil and had He not shown man the Right Way and enabled him to reform himself accordingly, no one would have been able to purify his own life merely on the basis of his naïve endowments
مَن جَآءَ بِٱلۡحَسَنَةِ فَلَهُۥ خَيۡرٞ مِّنۡهَا وَهُم مِّن فَزَعٖ يَوۡمَئِذٍ ءَامِنُونَ ٨٩ وَمَن جَآءَ بِٱلسَّيِّئَةِ فَكُبَّتۡ وُجُوهُهُمۡ فِي ٱلنَّارِ هَلۡ تُجۡزَوۡنَ إِلَّا مَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ ٩٠
Whoever brings a good deed, will have better than its worth; and they will be safe from the terror on that Day. And whoever brings an evil deed, they will be cast down (prone) on their faces in the Fire. ‘Are you being recompensed anything except what you used to do?’
Surah 27 An-Naml Verses 89-90
- ‘better than its worth’ - The reward will be better in two ways;
- It will be better than what a person actually deserved for his good deeds; and
- It will be forever, although the good deeds were circumscribed by time and their effects limited to a certain period
مَن جَآءَ بِٱلۡحَسَنَةِ فَلَهُۥ خَيۡرٞ مِّنۡهَاۖ وَمَن جَآءَ بِٱلسَّيِّئَةِ فَلَا يُجۡزَى ٱلَّذِينَ عَمِلُواْ ٱلسَّئَِّاتِ إِلَّا مَا كَانُواْ يَعۡمَلُونَ ٨٤
Whosoever brings good, he shall have the better thereof; and whosoever brings evil, then those who do evil deeds will only be requited for what they do.
Surah 28 Al-Qasas Verse 84
- ‘…better thereof’ – The reward of Allah is better than the good deeds of His servants – how can it not be, when Allah has multiplied it many times over? This is the position of generosity of Allah
- ‘…for what they used to do’ – This is also the position of generosity of Allah, and also justice
وَمَن جَٰهَدَ فَإِنَّمَا يُجَٰهِدُ لِنَفۡسِهِۦٓۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَغَنِيٌّ عَنِ ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ ٦ وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ لَنُكَفِّرَنَّ عَنۡهُمۡ سَئَِّاتِهِمۡ وَلَنَجۡزِيَنَّهُمۡ أَحۡسَنَ ٱلَّذِي كَانُواْ يَعۡمَلُونَ ٧
And whosoever strives, he strives only for himself. Verily, Allah stands not in need of any of the Alamin (mankind, jinn and all that exists). Those who believe, and do righteous good deeds, surely, We shall expiate from their evil deeds and shall reward them according to the best of that which they used to do.
Surah 29 Al-Ankabut Verses 6-7
- ‘strives’ (Mujahadah) means to strive against a hostile force. If no enemy is specified, the word signifies a person’s engagement in a pervasive all-out struggle. This striving has different facets for the believer, as in:
- He has to fight against Satan who constantly seeks to deter him from good deeds by frightening him with the prospect of the losses he will incur and tempting him to evil by pointing out the advantages and pleasures it will yield.
- He has to strive against his own self that is wont to prompt him to become a slave of his desires
- He has to strive against fellow-beings whose ideas, predilections, moral concepts, customs and usages, cultural patterns and socio-economic laws are discordant with the true faith; and
This striving, all aspects, is not limited to any particular day, but extends across a believers’ life, embracing every moment of his day and night. Al-Hasan Al Basri refers to this mujahadah when he says: “A man makes jihad even though he might never have struck (anyone) with his sword”
- This striving helps human beings free themselves from the clutches of evil and waywardness and helps them proceed along the path of goodness and truth. Hence, by engaging in this striving, they do no favour to Allah; rather, they do good to themselves.
- Expiation of evil deeds – means that whatever sins he might have committed before embracing Islam will be forgiven. Moreover, lapses, which were not committed out of wilful rebellion, will be overlooked in consideration of his good deeds. Furthermore, when he adopts a life of faith and good deeds he will attain self-development and overcome many of his weaknesses.
- Rewards for the best of the deeds is open to two meanings:
- People will be rewarded in consideration of their best deeds
- That they will be granted a better reward than what they strictly deserve on the basis of their good deeds
ظَهَرَ ٱلۡفَسَادُ فِي ٱلۡبَرِّ وَٱلۡبَحۡرِ بِمَا كَسَبَتۡ أَيۡدِي ٱلنَّاسِ لِيُذِيقَهُم بَعۡضَ ٱلَّذِي عَمِلُواْ لَعَلَّهُمۡ يَرۡجِعُونَ ٤١
Evil has appeared on land and sea because of what the hands of men have earned (by oppression and evil deeds), that He (Allah) may make them taste a part of that which they have done, in order that they may return (by repenting to Allah, and begging His pardon).
Surah 30 Ar-Rum Verse 41
- ‘Evil’ – Mujahid said “Evil on land means the killing of the son of Adam, and evil on the sea means piracy”. Zaid bin Rafi said it means “The rain is withheld from the land and this is followed by famine and it is withheld from the sea, adversely affecting the animals which live in it”
- It was reported in the Sahih: ‘When the evil doer dies, it is a relief for the people, the land, the trees and the animals’
- Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal recorded that Abu Qahdham said: “At the time of Ziyad or Ibn Ziyad, a man found a cloth in which were wrapped grains of wheat which were as big as date stones; on it was written: “This grew at a time when justice prevailed””
وَأَمَّا ٱلَّذِينَ فَسَقُواْ فَمَأۡوَىٰهُمُ ٱلنَّارُۖ كُلَّمَآ أَرَادُوٓاْ أَن يَخۡرُجُواْ مِنۡهَآ أُعِيدُواْ فِيهَا وَقِيلَ لَهُمۡ ذُوقُواْ عَذَابَ ٱلنَّارِ ٱلَّذِي كُنتُم بِهِۦ تُكَذِّبُونَ ٢٠ وَلَنُذِيقَنَّهُم مِّنَ ٱلۡعَذَابِ ٱلۡأَدۡنَىٰ دُونَ ٱلۡعَذَابِ ٱلۡأَكۡبَرِ لَعَلَّهُمۡ يَرۡجِعُونَ ٢١ وَمَنۡ أَظۡلَمُ مِمَّن ذُكِّرَ بَِٔايَٰتِ رَبِّهِۦ ثُمَّ أَعۡرَضَ عَنۡهَآۚ إِنَّا مِنَ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِينَ مُنتَقِمُونَ ٢٢
And as for those who are Fasiqun (disbelievers and disobedient to Allah) their abode will be the Fire, every time they wish to get away there from, they will be put back thereto, and it will be said to them: ‘Taste you the torment of the Fire which you used to deny’. And verily, We will make them taste of the near torment prior to the supreme torment, in order that they may (repent and) return. And who does more wrong than he who is reminded of the Ayat (proofs, signs, evidences) of his Lord, then turn aside there from? Verily, We shall exact retribution from the Mujrimun (criminals, disbelievers, sinners).
Surah 32 As-Sajdah verse 20-22
- The ‘supreme torment’ here refers to the chastisement to which the unbelievers and evil-doers will be subjected in the World-to-Come. The verse also speaks of ‘near torment’ which, according to Ibn Abbas, refers to “diseases and problems in this world, and the things that happen to its people as a test from Allah to His servants so that they will repent to Him”. The tests in the world are several, as in, death of kith-and-kin, tragic accidents, and losses and failures of various types which people face in the course of their lives. Problems include storms, earthquakes, floods, famines, riots, warfare and other calamities which befall a people collectively, sometimes affecting the lives of millions.
- The ‘near torment’ afflicts people in order that they may take heed before the ‘supreme torment’ overtakes them. They should give up those patterns of thought and action that leads them to the immense chastisement of the Hereafter. Calamities visit him so that he may purge his mind of the delusion that there is no power above him capable of causing harm. Allah has so arranged the order of things in the world that individuals, nations and countries are periodically afflicted with devastating calamities in order to remind them of their utter helplessness and to impress upon them that there exists a pervasive supreme power
- Whenever any calamity from Allah strikes man it becomes evident that he can neither avert it himself nor by invoking any jinn, spirit or god. Far from being simply natural occurings, these calamities serve as a warning from Allah to dispel man’s misperceptions and prompt him to recognize the reality of things. By deriving lessons from these, man can mend his ways during his existence by embracing right beliefs and reforming his conduct. This alone will save him from the greater chastisement of the Hereafter
- ‘Ayat of his Lord’ – refers to the signs, proofs, evidences, and are quite pervasive and cover a pretty wide range. If one bears in mind the Quranic description of these signs, one will find they fall under the following six categories:
- The signs found in the wide expanses of the heaven and the earth and in the overall system underlying the working of the Universe;
- The signs manifest in man’s procreation, his structure and his existence as a whole;
- The signs found in man’s intuition, in his unconscious and subconscious, and in his moral conceptions;
- The signs in the human experience of history;
- The signs manifest in the earthly and heavenly calamities that befall man; and
- The signs that Allah has sent down through the agency of His Messengers in order to apprise man, in a reasonable and persuasive manner, of the truths that are corroborated by these signs
- ‘Mujrimun’ – Taken together, the Ayat of the Lord consistently and emphatically impress upon man that he is neither without any God nor is he the servant of a multiplicity of gods. Furthermore, man has not been sent to this world as one who is absolutely free and unaccountable. Thus, all possible measures have been taken by Allah to direct man to the Right Way. A whole range of signs have been provided for his admonition. He has also been granted the faculties of sight, hearing and rational thinking. So if a man then turns a blind eye to all these signs, none is more criminal than man himself
ٱدۡعُوهُمۡ لِأٓبَآئِهِمۡ هُوَ أَقۡسَطُ عِندَ ٱللَّهِۚ فَإِن لَّمۡ تَعۡلَمُوٓاْ ءَابَآءَهُمۡ فَإِخۡوَٰنُكُمۡ فِي ٱلدِّينِ وَمَوَٰلِيكُمۡۚ وَلَيۡسَ عَلَيۡكُمۡ جُنَاحٞ فِيمَآ أَخۡطَأۡتُم بِهِۦ وَلَٰكِن مَّا تَعَمَّدَتۡ قُلُوبُكُمۡۚ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ غَفُورٗا رَّحِيمًا ٥
…And there is no sin on you concerning that in which you made a mistake, except in regard to what your hearts deliberately intend. And Allah is Ever Oft-Forgiving, Most-Merciful.
Surah 33 Al-Ahzab Verse 5
إِنَّ ٱلۡمُسۡلِمِينَ وَٱلۡمُسۡلِمَٰتِ وَٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ وَٱلۡمُؤۡمِنَٰتِ وَٱلۡقَٰنِتِينَ وَٱلۡقَٰنِتَٰتِ وَٱلصَّٰدِقِينَ وَٱلصَّٰدِقَٰتِ وَٱلصَّٰبِرِينَ وَٱلصَّٰبِرَٰتِ وَٱلۡخَٰشِعِينَ وَٱلۡخَٰشِعَٰتِ وَٱلۡمُتَصَدِّقِينَ وَٱلۡمُتَصَدِّقَٰتِ وَٱلصَّٰٓئِمِينَ وَٱلصَّٰٓئِمَٰتِ وَٱلۡحَٰفِظِينَ فُرُوجَهُمۡ وَٱلۡحَٰفِظَٰتِ وَٱلذَّٰكِرِينَ ٱللَّهَ كَثِيرٗا وَٱلذَّٰكِرَٰتِ أَعَدَّ ٱللَّهُ لَهُم مَّغۡفِرَةٗ وَأَجۡرًا عَظِيمٗا ٣٥
Verily, the Muslim men and women, the believers men and women, the men and the women who are obedient, the men and the women who are truthful, the men and the women who are patient, the men and the women who are humble, the men and the women who give Sadaqat, the men and the women who observe Saum, the men and the women who guard their chastity, and the men and the women who remember Allah much with their hearts and tongues. Allah has prepared for them forgiveness and a great reward.
Surah 33 Al-Ahzab Verse 35
- Narrated Umm Salamah (wife of the Prophet, pbuh) that she asked the Prophet (pbuh), “Why is that we are not mentioned in the Quran as men are?” Then one day without my realising it, he was calling from the minbar and I was combing my hair, so I tied my hair back then went out of my chamber in my house, and I started listening out, and he was saying from the minbar (this verse)
- Muslims and believers are used separately indicating that Iman (faith) is something more than Islam and that it is more specific. The Prophet (pbuh) has stated the following which represents the true state of faith (Iman): ‘He who is satisfied with Allah as his Lord, with Islam as his religion, and with Muhammad (pbuh) as His Messenger has truly savoured the taste of faith’ So beyond Islam there is a higher level to be reached, which is Iman.
- Patience is the attribute of those who are steadfast, which is patience in the face of adversity and knowing that what is decreed will inevitably come to pass. So, they face it with patience and steadfastness. Patience is the most difficult when disaster first strikes, then after it becomes easier, and this is true steadfastness.
- ‘humble’ – the word used is Khashi (root Khushu, meaning serenity and tranquillity) which means dignity and humility. What motivates a person to be like this is the fear of Allah and the awareness that He is constantly watching, as mentioned in Hadith: ‘Worship Allah as if you can see Him, for if you cannot see Him, He can see you’ [humble before Allah also alludes to Prayers]
- ‘remember Allah much’ – narrated Abu Said Al Khudri that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘If a man wakes his wife at night and they pray two Rakahs, they will be recorded that night as being among the men and the women who remembers Allah’
- The verse indicates the acts that carry weight in Allah’s sight. In fact they represent the core values of Islam. As far as these values are concerned, no distinction is made between men and women. Each of them, of course, performs different functions in their respective spheres of activity. However, if their acts are permeated with the same values, they will carry the same weight in Allah’s sight and fetch identical rewards.
يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ ٱتَّقُواْ ٱللَّهَ وَقُولُواْ قَوۡلٗا سَدِيدٗا ٧٠ يُصۡلِحۡ لَكُمۡ أَعۡمَٰلَكُمۡ وَيَغۡفِرۡ لَكُمۡ ذُنُوبَكُمۡۗ وَمَن يُطِعِ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ فَقَدۡ فَازَ فَوۡزًا عَظِيمًا ٧١
O you who believe! Have Taqwa of Allah, and speak (always) the truth. He will direct you to do righteous good deeds and will forgive you your sins. And whosoever obeys Allah and His Messenger (pbuh), he has indeed achieved a great achievement.
Surah 33 Al-Ahzab Verse 70-71
- ‘speak the truth’ – meaning, to speak in a straight forward manner, with no crookedness or distortion
- Allah promises in this verse that if believers have taqwa of Him and they speak the truth, He will reward them by:
- Making their deeds righteous i.e., enabling them to do righteous deeds; and
- Forgiving them their past sins
وَمَآ أَمۡوَٰلُكُمۡ وَلَآ أَوۡلَٰدُكُم بِٱلَّتِي تُقَرِّبُكُمۡ عِندَنَا زُلۡفَىٰٓ إِلَّا مَنۡ ءَامَنَ وَعَمِلَ صَٰلِحٗا فَأُوْلَٰٓئِكَ لَهُمۡ جَزَآءُ ٱلضِّعۡفِ بِمَا عَمِلُواْ وَهُمۡ فِي ٱلۡغُرُفَٰتِ ءَامِنُونَ ٣٧
And it is not your wealth nor your children that bring you nearer to Us (i.e. please Allah), but only he who believes and does righteous good deeds; as for such, there will be two-fold reward for what they did, and they will reside in high dwellings (Paradise) in peace and security.
Surah 34 Saba Verse 37
- ‘but only he’ – this is open to two meanings:
- That it is not wealth and children that brings one close to Allah; rather it is our faith and one’s good deeds
- It is possible that wealth and children might bring one close to Allah, if one spends one’s wealth in Allah’s cause and undertake his children’s education and upbringing in such a manner that they grow up being Allah-conscious and upright
- Narrated Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘Allah does not look at your outward appearance or your wealth, rather He looks at your hearts and your deeds’
إِنَّا نَحۡنُ نُحۡيِ ٱلۡمَوۡتَىٰ وَنَكۡتُبُ مَا قَدَّمُواْ وَءَاثَٰرَهُمۡۚ وَكُلَّ شَيۡءٍ أَحۡصَيۡنَٰهُ فِيٓ إِمَامٖ مُّبِينٖ ١٢
Verily, We gave life to the dead, and We record that which they send before (them), and their traces and all things We have recorded with numbers (as a record) in a Clear Book.
Surah 36 Ya-Sin Verse 12
- One learns from this verse that the record of one’s deeds consists of the following three types of entries:
- All that man does, good or bad, is recorded
- All the impressions that a man leaves on the objects around him or on the organs of his own body are recorded. All these will, at a given time, stand out with utter conspicuousness and it will be possible to observe a person’s ideas, intentions, and motives in their fullness (for example it will be possible to hear the words he spoke in the past in his own voice)
- The full impact of a person on others: both good and evil; the impact on his own future generations, on his society and on mankind at large, will also be entered in this record. The good or bad upbringing of his children, the contribution he made to spreading good or evil in his society and among mankind will also be maintained and will be kept extant as long as his deeds continue to affect human behaviour in the world
قُلۡ يَٰعِبَادِ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ ٱتَّقُواْ رَبَّكُمۡۚ لِلَّذِينَ أَحۡسَنُواْ فِي هَٰذِهِ ٱلدُّنۡيَا حَسَنَةٞۗ وَأَرۡضُ ٱللَّهِ وَٰسِعَةٌۗ إِنَّمَا يُوَفَّى ٱلصَّٰبِرُونَ أَجۡرَهُم بِغَيۡرِ حِسَابٖ ١٠
Say (O Muhammad, pbuh): ‘O My slaves who believe, be afraid of your Lord and keep your duty to Him. Good is (the reward) for those who do good in this world, and Allah’s earth is spacious! Only those who are patient shall receive their reward in full, without reckoning’.
Surah 39 Az-Zumar Verse 10
- ‘without reckoning’ – meaning, the reward will not be weighed and measured, they will be given an immense reward
وَقَالَ ٱلَّذِيٓ ءَامَنَ يَٰقَوۡمِ ٱتَّبِعُونِ أَهۡدِكُمۡ سَبِيلَ ٱلرَّشَادِ ٣٨ يَٰقَوۡمِ إِنَّمَا هَٰذِهِ ٱلۡحَيَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنۡيَا مَتَٰعٞ وَإِنَّ ٱلۡأٓخِرَةَ هِيَ دَارُ ٱلۡقَرَارِ ٣٩ مَنۡ عَمِلَ سَيِّئَةٗ فَلَا يُجۡزَىٰٓ إِلَّا مِثۡلَهَاۖ وَمَنۡ عَمِلَ صَٰلِحٗا مِّن ذَكَرٍ أَوۡ أُنثَىٰ وَهُوَ مُؤۡمِنٞ فَأُوْلَٰٓئِكَ يَدۡخُلُونَ ٱلۡجَنَّةَ يُرۡزَقُونَ فِيهَا بِغَيۡرِ حِسَابٖ ٤٠
And the man who believed said: ‘O my people! Follow me, I will guide you to the way of right conduct. O my people! Truly this life of the world is nothing but a (quick passing) enjoyment and verily, the Hereafter that is the home that will remain forever. Whosoever does an evil deed, will not be requited except the like thereof; and whoever does a righteous deed, whether male or female, and is a true believer, such will enter Paradise, where they will be provided therein without limit’.
Surah 40 Ghafir Verses 38-40
- ‘man who believed’ - The reference is to a true believer in the Pharaonic community at the time of Prophet Moses, pbuh
مَّنۡ عَمِلَ صَٰلِحٗا فَلِنَفۡسِهِۦۖ وَمَنۡ أَسَآءَ فَعَلَيۡهَاۗ وَمَا رَبُّكَ بِظَلَّٰمٖ لِّلۡعَبِيدِ ٤٦
Whoever does righteous good deeds, it is for (the benefit of) his own self; and whosoever does evil, it is against his own self. And your Lord is not at all unjust to (His) slaves.
Surah 41 Fussilat Verse 46
مَن كَانَ يُرِيدُ حَرۡثَ ٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ نَزِدۡ لَهُۥ فِي حَرۡثِهِۦۖ وَمَن كَانَ يُرِيدُ حَرۡثَ ٱلدُّنۡيَا نُؤۡتِهِۦ مِنۡهَا وَمَا لَهُۥ فِي ٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ مِن نَّصِيبٍ ٢٠
Whoever desires the reward of the Hereafter, We give him increase in his reward, and whosoever desires the reward of this world, We give him thereof, and he has no portion in the Hereafter.
Surah 42 Ash-Shura Verse 20
وَمَآ أَصَٰبَكُم مِّن مُّصِيبَةٖ فَبِمَا كَسَبَتۡ أَيۡدِيكُمۡ وَيَعۡفُواْ عَن كَثِيرٖ ٣٠
And whatever of misfortune befalls you, it is because of what your hands have earned. And He pardons much.
Surah 42 Ash-Shura Verse 30
فَإِنۡ أَعۡرَضُواْ فَمَآ أَرۡسَلۡنَٰكَ عَلَيۡهِمۡ حَفِيظًاۖ إِنۡ عَلَيۡكَ إِلَّا ٱلۡبَلَٰغُۗ وَإِنَّآ إِذَآ أَذَقۡنَا ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ مِنَّا رَحۡمَةٗ فَرِحَ بِهَاۖ وَإِن تُصِبۡهُمۡ سَيِّئَةُۢ بِمَا قَدَّمَتۡ أَيۡدِيهِمۡ فَإِنَّ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ كَفُورٞ ٤٨
But if they turn away (O Muhammad, pbuh) We have not sent you as a Hafiz (watcher, protector) over them (i.e. to take care of their deeds and to recompense them). Your duty is to convey (the message). And verily, when We cause man to taste of mercy from Us, he rejoices thereat; but when some ill befall them because of the deeds which their hands have sent forth, then, verily, man (becomes) ingrate!
Surah 42 Ash-Shura Verse 48
- …man becomes ingrate’ – means he forgets the previous times of ease and blessings and acknowledges nothing but the present moment. If times of ease come to him, he becomes arrogant and transgresses, but if any difficulty befalls him, he loses hope and is filled with despair. This is like what the Prophet (pbuh) said to the women: ‘O women, give in charity, for I have seen that you form the majority of the people of the Hell’, A woman asked, “Why is that, O Messenger of Allah?” He said: ‘Because you complain too much, and you are ungrateful to (your) husbands. If one of you were to be treated kindly for an entire lifetime, then that kindness was lacking for one day, she would say, “I have never seen anything good from you!”’
وَوَصَّيۡنَا ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ بِوَٰلِدَيۡهِ إِحۡسَٰنًاۖ حَمَلَتۡهُ أُمُّهُۥ كُرۡهٗا وَوَضَعَتۡهُ كُرۡهٗاۖ وَحَمۡلُهُۥ وَفِصَٰلُهُۥ ثَلَٰثُونَ شَهۡرًاۚ حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا بَلَغَ أَشُدَّهُۥ وَبَلَغَ أَرۡبَعِينَ سَنَةٗ قَالَ رَبِّ أَوۡزِعۡنِيٓ أَنۡ أَشۡكُرَ نِعۡمَتَكَ ٱلَّتِيٓ أَنۡعَمۡتَ عَلَيَّ وَعَلَىٰ وَٰلِدَيَّ وَأَنۡ أَعۡمَلَ صَٰلِحٗا تَرۡضَىٰهُ وَأَصۡلِحۡ لِي فِي ذُرِّيَّتِيٓۖ إِنِّي تُبۡتُ إِلَيۡكَ وَإِنِّي مِنَ ٱلۡمُسۡلِمِينَ ١٥ أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ نَتَقَبَّلُ عَنۡهُمۡ أَحۡسَنَ مَا عَمِلُواْ وَنَتَجَاوَزُ عَن سَئَِّاتِهِمۡ فِيٓ أَصۡحَٰبِ ٱلۡجَنَّةِۖ وَعۡدَ ٱلصِّدۡقِ ٱلَّذِي كَانُواْ يُوعَدُونَ ١٦
And We have enjoined on man to be dutiful and kind to his parents. His mother bears him with hardship. And she brings him forth with hardship, and the bearing of him, and the weaning of him is thirty months, till when he attains full strength and reaches forty years, he says: ‘My Lord! Grant me the power and ability that I may be grateful for Your favour which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents, and that I may do righteous good deeds, such as please You, and make my offspring good. Truly, I have turned to you in repentance, and truly, I am one of the Muslims’. They are those from whom We shall accept the best of their deeds and overlook their evil deeds. (They shall be) among the dwellers of Paradise – a promise of truth, which they have been promised.
Surah 46 Al-Ahqaf Verse 15-16
ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ وَصَدُّواْ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ أَضَلَّ أَعۡمَٰلَهُمۡ ١ وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ وَءَامَنُواْ بِمَا نُزِّلَ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٖ وَهُوَ ٱلۡحَقُّ مِن رَّبِّهِمۡ كَفَّرَ عَنۡهُمۡ سَئَِّاتِهِمۡ وَأَصۡلَحَ بَالَهُمۡ ٢ ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ ٱتَّبَعُواْ ٱلۡبَٰطِلَ وَأَنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ ٱتَّبَعُواْ ٱلۡحَقَّ مِن رَّبِّهِمۡۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يَضۡرِبُ ٱللَّهُ لِلنَّاسِ أَمۡثَٰلَهُمۡ ٣
Those who disbelieve, and hinder (men) from the path of Allah, He will render their deeds vain. But those who believe and do righteous good deeds, and believe in that which is sent down to Muhammad (pbuh) – for it is the truth from their Lord – He will expiate from them their sins, and will make good their state. This is because those who disbelieve follow falsehood, while those who believe follow the truth from their Lord. Thus does Allah set forth mankind their parables.
Surah 47 Muhammad Verses 1-3
وَإِنَّ لِلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُواْ عَذَابٗا دُونَ ذَٰلِكَ وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكۡثَرَهُمۡ لَا يَعۡلَمُونَ ٤٧
And verily, for those who do wrong, there is another punishment before this; but most of them know not.
Surah 52 At-Tur Verse 47
- ‘another punishment before this’ – refers to the torment in this world and in their graves
- Narrated Anas that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘When a human being is laid in his grave and his companions return and he even hears their footsteps, two angels come to him and make him sit and ask him: “What did you use to say about this man, Muhammad (pbuh)?” He will say, “I testify that he is Allah’s slave and His Messenger”. Then it will be said to him, “Look at your place in the Hell-Fire. Allah has changed for you a place in Paradise instead of it”’. The Prophet (pbuh) added, ‘The dead person will see both his places. But a disbeliever or a hypocrite will say to the angels, “I do not know, but I used to say what the people used to say!” It will be said to him, “Neither did you know nor did you take the guidance (by following the Quran)”. Then he will be hit with an iron hammer between his two ears, and he will cry and that cry will be heard by whatsoever near to him except human beings and jinn’
- ‘but most of them know not’ – means, “We will torment them in the life of the world and test them with various hardships, so that they might go back and repent. However, they do not understand what is happening to them or why, because when the torment is removed, they revert to committing the worst of what they used to do before”
وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَضۡحَكَ وَأَبۡكَىٰ ٤٣ وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَمَاتَ وَأَحۡيَا ٤٤
And that it is He (Allah) who makes (whom He wills) laugh, and makes (whom He wills) weep. And that it is He who causes death and gives life.
Surah 53 An-Najm Verses 43-44
تَبَٰرَكَ ٱلَّذِي بِيَدِهِ ٱلۡمُلۡكُ وَهُوَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيۡءٖ قَدِيرٌ ١ ٱلَّذِي خَلَقَ ٱلۡمَوۡتَ وَٱلۡحَيَوٰةَ لِيَبۡلُوَكُمۡ أَيُّكُمۡ أَحۡسَنُ عَمَلٗاۚ وَهُوَ ٱلۡعَزِيزُ ٱلۡغَفُورُ ٢
Blessed is He in Whose Hand is the dominion; and He is able to do all things. Who has created death and life that He may test you which of you is best in deed. And He is the All-Mighty, the Oft-Forgiving.
Surah 67 Al-Mulk Verse 1-2
- ‘best in deed’ – i.e. who amongst you do the good deeds in the most perfect manner, that means to do them (deeds) totally for Allah’s sake and in accordance with the legal ways of the Prophet (pbuh). It should be noted that Allah did not say “which of you does the most deeds”
كَلَّآ إِذَا بَلَغَتِ ٱلتَّرَاقِيَ ٢٦ وَقِيلَ مَنۡۜ رَاقٖ ٢٧ وَظَنَّ أَنَّهُ ٱلۡفِرَاقُ ٢٨ وَٱلۡتَفَّتِ ٱلسَّاقُ بِٱلسَّاقِ ٢٩ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ يَوۡمَئِذٍ ٱلۡمَسَاقُ ٣٠ فَلَا صَدَّقَ وَلَا صَلَّىٰ ٣١ وَلَٰكِن كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ ٣٢ ثُمَّ ذَهَبَ إِلَىٰٓ أَهۡلِهِۦ يَتَمَطَّىٰٓ ٣٣ أَوۡلَىٰ لَكَ فَأَوۡلَىٰ ٣٤ ثُمَّ أَوۡلَىٰ لَكَ فَأَوۡلَىٰٓ ٣٥ أَيَحۡسَبُ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنُ أَن يُتۡرَكَ سُدًى ٣٦
Nay, when (the soul) reaches to the collarbone, and it will be said: ‘Who can cure him (save him from death)?’ And he (the dying person) will conclude that it was (the time) of parting (death); And one shank will be joined with another shank. The drive will be on that Day to your Lord (Allah)! So, he neither believed nor prayed! But on the contrary, he denied and turned away! Then he walked in conceit to his family admiring himself! Woe to you (O man, disbeliever)! And then (again) woe to you! And then (again) woe to you! Does man think that he will be left neglected?
Surah 75 Al-Qiyamah Verses 26-36
- ‘the drive’ – refers to the ascending of the soul into the heavens, the place of return and destination
- ‘one shank joined with other shank’ – this has several interpretations, as in:
- This is the last day of the days of this world and the first day of the days of the Hereafter. So there will be hardships that will meet (more) hardships, except for him whom Allah has mercy upon
- The great matter will be joined by the great matter (Ikrimah)
- A test (will be joined) with a test (Mujahid)
- These are your two shins when they are bound together; his two legs have died and they will not carry him while he used to walk around on them (Al Hasan Al Basari)
- Or it may mean, hardship and distress will be joined with another hardship and distress (i.e. distress of death, and of the thought as to what is going to happen to him in the Hereafter)
- ‘left neglected’ – As-Suddi said, “meaning not resurrected”. Mujahid, Ash-Shafii and others said, “meaning he will not be commanded and prohibited. Apparently, the Ayah includes both meanings. This means that he will not be left neglected in this worldly life, without being commanded and prohibited. He also will not be left neglected in his grave unattended to without resurrection
لَقَدۡ خَلَقۡنَا ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ فِيٓ أَحۡسَنِ تَقۡوِيمٖ ٤ ثُمَّ رَدَدۡنَٰهُ أَسۡفَلَ سَٰفِلِينَ ٥ إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ فَلَهُمۡ أَجۡرٌ غَيۡرُ مَمۡنُونٖ ٦
Verily, We created man in the best stature (mould). Then We reduced him to the lowest of the low. Except those who believe and do righteous deeds. Then they shall have a reward without end (Paradise).
Surah 95 At-tin Verses 4-6
- The creation of man in the best mould signifies his excellent form, and his rational faculty, which are not bestowed upon any other species. Moreover, man’s excellence is also manifested by the raising of the Prophets from amongst mankind
- ‘lowest of the low’ – This has several interpretations, as in:
- Allah reverts man to old age when he is unable to think or act properly - Quranic scholars deduce the following meaning from this verse: “Those who do righteous deeds in the state of faith in their youth will be credited with the same good actions in their old age and will be rewarded accordingly”
- Allah hurls man into the lowest sphere of Hell – Quranic scholars deduce the following meaning from this verse: “Those who profess faith and do righteous deeds are exempted from being reverted to the lowest of the low. Rather, they will receive a never-ending reward”
- As man abuses his mind and body for evil, notwithstanding his creation in the best mould, Allah lets him pursue the evil path, which ultimately renders him as the lowest of the low. Those given to vices such as greed, lust, selfishness, unlawful sexual gratification, drinking, meanness and anger sink to the abyss of degradation. While committing evils out of such vices man proves himself to be the lowest of the low
- The main idea here is the vindication of divine recompense. Those taking to vices eventually turn into lowest of low. By the same token, those who believe in Allah, the Messenger (pbuh), the Hereafter and devote themselves to doing good, are saved from falling into the above pitfall and maintain excellence of the mould in which Allah has created them
إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ مِنۡ أَهۡلِ ٱلۡكِتَٰبِ وَٱلۡمُشۡرِكِينَ فِي نَارِ جَهَنَّمَ خَٰلِدِينَ فِيهَآۚ أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ هُمۡ شَرُّ ٱلۡبَرِيَّةِ ٦ إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ هُمۡ خَيۡرُ ٱلۡبَرِيَّةِ ٧ جَزَآؤُهُمۡ عِندَ رَبِّهِمۡ جَنَّٰتُ عَدۡنٖ تَجۡرِي مِن تَحۡتِهَا ٱلۡأَنۡهَٰرُ خَٰلِدِينَ فِيهَآ أَبَدٗاۖ رَّضِيَ ٱللَّهُ عَنۡهُمۡ وَرَضُواْ عَنۡهُۚ ذَٰلِكَ لِمَنۡ خَشِيَ رَبَّهُۥ ٨
Verily, those who disbelieve from among the people of the Scripture and Al-Mushrikin will abide in the Fire of Hell. They are the worst of creatures. Verily, those who believe and do righteous good deeds, they are the best of creatures. Their reward with their Lord is ‘Adn (Eden) Paradise (Gardens of Eternity) underneath which rivers flow. They will abide therein forever, Allah will be pleased with them, and they with Him. That is for him who fears his Lord.
Surah 98 Al-Baiyyinah Verses 6-8
- The reference here is to the believer who leads life while fearing Allah at every step. He shuns all that might incur His displeasure. Accordingly, he will be amply rewarded and Allah will be pleased with him.
- Imam Ahmad recorded from Abu Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said: ‘Shall I not inform you of the best of creation?’ They said, “Of Course, O Messenger of Allah!” He said: ‘A man who takes the reins of his horse in the way of Allah, and whenever there is a fearful cry from the enemy, he climbs upon it. Shall I not inform you of the best of creation?’ They said, “Of Course, O Messenger of Allah (pbuh)!” He said: ‘A man who has a flock of sheep and he establishes the prayer and gives the obligatory charity. Shall I not inform you of the worst of creation?’, They said, “Of Course”, He said: ‘The person who is asked by Allah and he does not give by Him’
إِنَّ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ لِرَبِّهِۦ لَكَنُودٞ ٦ وَإِنَّهُۥ عَلَىٰ ذَٰلِكَ لَشَهِيدٞ ٧ وَإِنَّهُۥ لِحُبِّ ٱلۡخَيۡرِ لَشَدِيدٌ ٨
۞أَفَلَا يَعۡلَمُ إِذَا بُعۡثِرَ مَا فِي ٱلۡقُبُورِ ٩ وَحُصِّلَ مَا فِي ٱلصُّدُورِ ١٠ إِنَّ رَبَّهُم بِهِمۡ يَوۡمَئِذٖ لَّخَبِيرُۢ ١١
Verily, man is ungrateful to his Lord. And to that he bears witness (by his statements and deeds). And verily, he is violent in the love of wealth. Knows he not that when the contents of the graves are poured forth, and that which is in the breasts (of men) shall be made known. Verily, that Day (Day of Resurrection) their Lord will be Well-Acquainted with them.
Surah 100 Al-Adiyat Verses 6-11
- ‘ungrateful’ – the Arabic word Al-Kanud means:
- Ungrateful (Ibn Abbas, Mujahid and others)
- The one who counts the calamities (that befalls him) and he forgets Allah’s favours (Al-Hasan)
- ‘violent in the love of wealth’ – may mean:
- Man is severe in his love of wealth
- Man is covetous and stingy due to the love of wealth
- ‘…breasts shall be made known’ – There are two points to elucidate here:
- The aesthetic laws operating in this world recognize the importance of one’s intention underlying an act. However, no court in this world has the means to ascertain man’s true intentions. On the Day of Judgement, even the secrets of the hearts and man’s innermost motives, considerations and concerns behind his actions will be laid bare in order to distinguish good from evil. On reflection, one recognises that full and real justice will be dispensed only in the Hereafter
- Divine judgement will not be on the basis of the knowledge that Allah already has about man’s intentions and motives. Rather, the secret of man’s heart will be divulged and his good and evil will be established in the open and in a transparent manner
- ‘Well-Acquainted’ – Allah knows all what men do, and He will compensate them for it without the slightest amount of injustice
فَأَمَّا مَن ثَقُلَتۡ مَوَٰزِينُهُۥ ٦ فَهُوَ فِي عِيشَةٖ رَّاضِيَةٖ ٧ وَأَمَّا مَنۡ خَفَّتۡ مَوَٰزِينُهُۥ ٨ فَأُمُّهُۥ هَاوِيَةٞ ٩
Then as for him whose Balance (of good deeds) will be heavy; he will live a pleasant life (in Paradise); But as for him whose Balance (of good deeds) will be light; he will have his home in Hawiyah.
Surah 101 Al-Qariah Verse 6-9
- The word mawazin may be the plural of mawzun or mizan. In the former sense, it stands for such deeds as carry some weight in Allah’s reckoning and may fetch some reward. Taken in its later sense, it refers to the ends of a scale. In other words, the scales of the righteous will weigh heavier and of the evil, lighter. Allah recognizes only good deeds as weighty. The scales will be heavier or lighter in proportion to one’s good and bad deeds
- ‘his home in Hawiyah’ – Literally, the verse reads as: “His mother will be Hawiyah”. Hell is branded as Hawiyah for being a deep pit into which the inmates of Hell will be hurled. As for using the word ‘mother’ in this context, it underscores that hell alone will be like the mother’s lap for the unbelievers in the Hereafter
