Forgiveness and Repentance
And march forth in the way (which leads) to forgiveness from your Lord, and for Paradise as wide as the heavens and the earth, prepared for Al-Muttaqun.
Surah 3 Al-Imran Verse 133
And those who, when they have committed Fahishah or wronged themselves with evil, remember Allah and ask forgiveness for their sins – and none can forgive sins but Allah – and do not persist in what they have done, while they know. For such, the reward is forgiveness from their Lord, and Gardens with rivers flowing underneath wherein they shall abide forever. How excellent is this reward for the doers!
Surah 3 Al-Imran Verses 135-136
- Imam Ahmad recorded that Abu Hurayrah said that the Prophet said: ‘A man once committed an error and said, ‘O Lord! I committed an error, so forgive me’. Allah said, ‘My servant committed an error and knew that he has a Lord Who forgives or punishes for the error. I have forgiven My servant’. The man committed another error and said, ‘O Lord! I committed an error, so forgive me’. Allah said, ‘My servant knew that he has a Lord Who forgives or punishes for the sin. I have forgiven My servant’. The man committed another error and said, ‘O Lord! I committed an error, so forgive me’. Allah said, ‘My servant knew that he has a Lord Who forgives or punishes for the error. I have forgiven my servant’. He then committed another error and said, ‘O Lord! I committed an error, so forgive me’. Allah said, ‘My servant knew that he has a Lord Who forgives or punishes for the error. Bear witness that I have forgiven My servant, so let him do whatever he likes’’.
- Abdur-Razzaq recorded that Anas bin Malik said, “I was told that when the Ayah (Verse 3:135) was revealed, Iblis (Shayatan) cried.”.
Allah accepts only the repentance of those who do evil in ignorance and foolishness and repent soon; it is they whom Allah will forgive and Allah is Ever All-Knower All-Wise. And of no effect is the repentance of those who continue to do evil deeds until death faces one of them and he says: ‘Now I repent’; nor of those who die while they are disbelievers. For them we have prepared a painful torment.
Surah 4 An-Nisa Verses 17-18
- The Arabic word ‘tawbah’ means ‘to return, to come back’. A man’s tawbah after he has sinned means that Allah’s servant, who had turned away from his Master in disobedience, has repented, and has returned to obedience and service.
- The Prophet (pbuh) has warned: ‘Allah accepts the repentance of a slave until the gargling (of death) begins’
- For when the last leaf of a man’s book of life has been turned, what opportunity remains for a man to return to righteous conduct? Likewise, if a person spends even the very last moment of his life in a state of disbelief and then on the threshold of the Next Life he comes to discover that the facts are quite contrary to what he had imagined, what sense is there for him to seek forgiveness?
- Every person who disobeys Allah by mistake or intentionally is ignorant, until he refrains from sin. Every sin that the servant commits, he commits out of ignorance
Allah wishes to make clear (what is lawful and what is unlawful) to you, and to show you the ways of those before you, and accept your repentance, and Allah is All-Knower, All-Wise. Allah wishes to accept your repentance, but those who follow their lusts, wish that you should deviate tremendously away (from the Right Path). Allah wishes to lighten (the burden) for you; and man was created weak.
Surah 4 An-Nisa Verses 26-28
- Allah has made clear the rulings, simplifying things so as to reduce the burden that man might know the limits ordained by Him, and do not deviate tremendously from them. If you try to abide by the limits made clear, small deviations are known and repented for might be forgiven by the Grace of Allah
Verily, Allah forgives not that partners should be set up with Him (in worship), but He forgives except that (anything else) to whom He wills; and whoever sets up partners with Allah in worship, he has indeed invented a tremendous sin.
Surah 4 An-Nisa Verse 48
- The purpose of the verse is not to tell man that he may commit any sin as long as he does not associate others with Allah in His divinity. The object is rather to impress upon those who had begun to regard polytheism as a trivial matter that it constitutes the most serious offence in Allah’s sight, an offence so serious that while other sins may be pardoned this will not
And seek the Forgiveness of Allah, certainly, Allah is Ever Oft Forgiving, Most Merciful.
Surah 4 An-Nisa Verse 106
And whoever does evil or wrongs himself but afterwards seek Allah’s forgiveness, he will find Allah Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. And whoever earns sin, he earns it only against himself. And Allah is Ever All-Knowing, All-Wise.
Surah 4 An-Nisa Verses 110-111
- The Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘No Muslim commits a sin and then perform ablution, prays two Rakahs and begs Allah for forgiveness for that sin, but He forgives him’
Verily, Allah forgives not settting up partners with Him, but He forgives whom He wills, sins other than that, and whoever sets up partners in worship with Allah, has indeed strayed far away.
Surah 4 An-Nisa Verse 116
Except those who repent (from hypocrisy), do righteous good deeds, hold fast to Allah, and purify their religion for Allah then they will be with the believers. And Allah will grant the believers a great reward. Why should Allah punish you if you have thanked (Him) and believed in Him. And Allah is Ever All-Appreciative (of good), All-Knowing.
Surah 4 An-Nisa Verses 146-147
- ‘purify their religion’ means to make one’s faith exclusively for Allah, by worshipping none but Allah, and do good for Allah’s sake, not to show off.
- Narrated Abdullah bin Amr that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘Whoever has the following four (characteristics) will be a pure hypocrite and whoever has one of the following four characteristics, will have one characteristic of hypocrisy unless and until he gives up:
- Whenever he is entrusted, he betrays (proves dishonest)
- Whenever he speaks, he tells a lie
- Whenever he makes a covenant, he proves treacherous
- Whenever he quarrels, he behaves in a very imprudent evil and insulting manner’
- Thanking (Shukr) denotes an acknowledgement of benefaction and a feeling of gratitude. Shukr to Allah requires:
- That a person should ascribe the benefaction to its real source, letting no one share in either the gratitude or the acknowledgement of benevolence.
- That his heart should be overflowing with love for and loyalty to, the Benefactor, and that he should have no attachment to His opponents.
- That he should obey the Benefactor and should not use His bounties contrary to His directives.
- ‘All-Appreciative’ (Shakir) means Allah is appreciative of the services which His servants have rendered and will recompense them liberally
Allah has promised those who believe and do deeds of righteousness that for them there is forgiveness and a great reward. And those who disbelieve and deny Our Ayat are those who will be the dwellers of the Hell Fire.
Surah 5 Al-Mai’da Verses 9-10
- The great reward is Paradise, which is part of Allah’s Mercy for His servants. They will not earn Paradise on account of their good actions, but rather on account of His Mercy and favour, even though they will qualify to earn this mercy on account of their good actions. Allah has made these actions the cause and path that lead to His mercy, favour, pardon and acceptance.
When those who believe in Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, signs) come to you, say: ‘Salamun Alaikum’ (peace be on you); your Lord has written (prescribed) Mercy for Himself, so that if any of you does evil in ignorance, and thereafter repents and does righteous good deeds, then surely, He is Oft-Forgiving, Most-Merciful.
Surah 6 Al-An’am Verse 54
The believers are only those when Allah is mentioned, feel a fear in their hearts and when His Verses (the Quran) are recited to them, they (the Verses) increase their faith; and they put their trust in their Lord (alone). Who perform As-Salat and spend out of what We have provided for them. It is they who are the believers in truth. For them are grades of dignity with their Lord, and forgiveness and a generous provision (Paradise).
Surah 8 Al-Anfa’l Verses 2-4
- As–Suddi commented: ‘A man might be thinking of committing injustice or a sin. But he abstains when he is told, “Have taqwa of Allah”, and his heart becomes fearful’
- A man’s faith grows as he is able to confirm and submit to the command of Allah which he comes across. This is especially so where he submits to the commands which go against his own personal predilections. A man’s faith attains great heights if instead of trying to twist and distort the commands of Allah and the Prophet (pbuh), he develops the habit of accepting and submitting. For if he hesitates to respond positively to Allah’s command, his faith is diminished. One thus learns that faith is not a static, immobile object; for both faith and disbelief are capable of growth and decline.
- ‘trust in their Lord’ (tawakkul) – the believers hope in none except Allah, direct their dedication to Him alone, seek refuge with Him alone, invoke Him alone for their various needs and supplicate to Him alone. They know whatever He wills occurs and that whatever He does not will never occurs, that He alone is the One Who has the decision in His kingdom, without partners; none can avert the decision of Allah and He is swift in reckoning. Hence the statement of Said bin Jubayr, “Tawakkul of Allah is the essence of faith”
- ‘forgiveness’ – even the best and the most devoted believers are liable to commit lapses. Out of His infinite Mercy, however, Allah overlooks man’s shortcomings as long as he fulfils the basic duties and has correct faith. Had it been a rule that man would be judged strictly on the basis of his deeds, no man however righteous would have escaped punishment.
Whether you (O Muhammad, pbuh) ask forgiveness for them (hypocrites) or ask not forgiveness for them … (and even) if you ask seventy times for their forgiveness … Allah will not forgive them, because they have disbelieved in Allah and His Messenger (Muhammad, pbuh). And Allah guides not those people who are Fasiqun (rebellious, disobedient to Allah).
Surah 9 At-Taubah Verse 80
Know they not that Allah accepts repentance from His slaves and takes the Sadaqat (alms, charities) and that Allah Alone is the One Who forgives and accepts repentance, Most Merciful?
Surah 9 At-Taubah Verse 104
(They are) those who turn to Allah in repentance, who worship (Him), who praise (Him), who fast (or go out in Allah’s Cause), who bow down, who prostrate themselves, who enjoin Al-Maruf and forbid from Al-Munkar, and who observe the limits set by Allah. And give glad tidings to the believers.
Surah 9 At-Taubah Verse 112
- ‘(they are) those’ – refers to the believers whose lives and properties Allah has purchased for the price that theirs shall be Paradise (as stated in V9:111)
- The recurrent turning to Allah in repentance (ta’ibun), this constant striving to return to the course of obedience and submission ensures the permanence and vitality of a person’s faith. Given man’s inherent frailties it seems had there been no repentance, it would have been virtually impossible for man to remain continually faithful to the terms of the transaction he has made with Allah. Hence, the believer has not been portrayed in the Quran as one who, once he adopts the course of obedience to Allah, never suffers a lapse. What is praiseworthy about the believer is that after every lapse he returns to the same course – seeking forgiveness and obedience to Allah.
- Al-sa’ihun signifies all those who move about the earth for higher purposes rather than in mere pursuit of pleasure and enjoyment; who engage in journeys:
- To seek the good pleasure of Allah
- Which are for the sake of Jihad
- For establishing and upholding Allah’s religion
- Involving migration from a region under the dominance of unbelief
- To spread the true faith
- To reform men
- To acquire useful knowledge
- To observe the signs of Allah; or
- To seek a lawful livelihood
- ‘observe’ refers to both:
- Acting individually and collectively in strict conformity with the limits set by Allah; and
- Exerting oneself so as to establish and safeguard those limits and try to ensure that they are not violated
It is not (proper) for the Prophet and those who believe to ask Allah’s Forgiveness for the Mushrikun (polytheists, idolaters, pagans, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah) even though they be of kin, after it has become clear to them that they are the dwellers of the Fire (because they died in a state of disbelief).
Surah 9 At-Taubah Verse 113
See they (hypocrites) not that they are put in trial once or twice every year (with different kinds of calamities, disease, famine)? Yet they turn not in repentance, nor do they learn a lesson (from it).
Surah 9 At-Tawbah Verse 126
And (the Quran commanding you): ‘Seek the forgiveness of your Lord, and turn to Him in repentance, that He may grant you good enjoyment, for a term appointed, and bestow His abounding Grace to every owner of grace. But if you turn away, then I fear for you the torment of a Great Day (Day of Resurrection). To Allah is your return, and He is able to do all things’.
Surah 11 Hud Verses 3-4
- If a person turns to Allah in sincere devotion, He will enable him to spend his life felicitously. Allah will lavish upon him His bounties, confer a variety of benedictions, provide a life of prosperity, grant peace and tranquillity, and cause him to live honourably rather than in ignominy and disgrace. The same idea has been brought forth elsewhere in the Quran in the following words:
“Whoever works righteousness – whether male or female while he (or she) is a true believer, verily, to him We will give good life…” Surah 16 An-Nahl Verse 97
The verse dispels the Satanic misconception that piety, honesty and responsible behaviour might at the most lead to man’s well being in the Next Life, but they certainly play havoc with his life in the present world. Under this mistaken notion it is believed that good people are inevitably destined to live in abject poverty and utter misery. In refuting this misconception, Allah makes it clear that those who live a righteous and Allah-fearing life will achieve success and esteemed position in this world as in the Next. For, a position of true honour in this world falls only to those who, out of their devotion to Allah, act righteously, who are known for their excellent morals, who adhere to propriety in their dealings with others, who are considered by people to be trust worthy, of whom all expect nothing but goodness and benevolence, and of whom none entertains the fear of any evil. The righteous even when their material conditions are unenviable, enjoy an inner peace and tranquillity which is beyond the reach of evil-doers even when they live in ostentatious luxury
- Implicit in the Quranic expression “good enjoyment” is another point which should not escape our attention. According to the Quran, enjoyment of life is of two kinds:
- One, which leads people, who are heedless of Allah, to temptations with the result that they immerse themselves in worldliness and forget Allah even more. Thus “enjoyment” though apparently a divine blessing, proves a curse. It becomes the precursor of Allah’s punishment. This is what the Quran brands as “deceiving enjoyment”, as in:
“…The life of this world is only the enjoyment of deception” Surah 3 Al-Imran Verse 185
“…And the life of this world is only a deceiving enjoyment” Surah 57 Al-Hadid Verse 20
- By contrast, the other kind of enjoyment of life adds to a person’s prosperity and physical vitality in such a way that he becomes even more grateful to Allah. This kind of ‘enjoyment’ prompts man to fulfil the obligations incumbent upon him towards Allah, towards Allah’s creatures and towards himself. Strengthened by the resources provided by Allah, man finds himself in a stronger position to effectively promote the cause of good and righteousness and to strive to obliterate evil and mischief. This is the Quranic concept of “good enjoyment” – an enjoyment which does not end with the life of this world, but extends to the Next Life as well
- ‘…owner of grace’ – Such people are those who help and serve the needy and deserving, physically and with his wealth, and even with good words. The more a person excels in moral conduct and good deeds the higher will be the status that Allah confers upon him. Just like Allah does not show any appreciation for evil, He does not show any lack of appreciation for goodness and virtue. Allah deals with his creatures in such a way that anyone who deserves a reward, is fully granted that reward
(Hud, pbuh, said to his people) ‘And O my people! Ask forgiveness of your Lord and then repent to Him, He will send you (from the sky) abundant rain, and add strength to your strength, so do not turn away as Mujrimun (criminals, disbelievers)’.
Surah 11 Hud Verse 52
- This is a provision of the moral law according to which Allah deals with human beings. Any nation which, deluded by its worldly prosperity, has recourse to wrong-doing and sin is doomed to destruction. However, if the people realize their mistake, give up their disobedience of Allah and sincerely return to His worship and service, their evil end is averted and their term is extended. Not only that but they are also judged to be deserving of reward instead of punishment, and Allah even ordains that they may attain well-being and ascendancy
And to Thamood (people, We sent) their brother Salih (Saleh). He said: “O my people! Worship Allah, you have no other Ilah (God) but Him. He brought you forth from the earth and settled you therein, then ask forgiveness of Him and turn to Him in repentance. Certainly, my Lord is Near (to all by His Knowledge), Responsive”.
Surah 11 Hud Verse 61
[Shuaib said:] “And O my people! Let not my Shiqaq cause you to suffer the fate similar to that of the people of Nuh (Noah) or of Hud or of Salih (Saleh), and the people of Lut (Lot) are not far off from you! And ask forgiveness of your Lord and turn unto Him in repentance. Verily, my Lord is Most Merciful, Most Loving”.
Surah 11 Hud Verses 89-90
So, stand (ask Allah to make) you (Muhammad, pbuh) firm and straight (on the religion of Islamic Monotheism) as you are commanded and those (your companions) who turn in repentance (unto Allah) with you, and transgress not (Allahs legal limits). Verily, He is All-Seer of what you do.
Surah 11 Hud Verse 112
They ask you to hasten the evil before the good, yet (many) exemplary punishments have indeed occurred before them. But verily, your Lord is full of Forgiveness for mankind inspite of their wrong-doing. And verily, your Lord is (also) Severe in punishment.
Surah 13 Ar-Rad Verse 6
And those who disbelieve say: “Why is not a sign sent down to him (Muhammad, pbuh) from his Lord?” Say: “Verily, Allah sends astray whom He wills and guides unto Himself those who turn to Him in repentance”.
Surah 13 Ar-Rad Verse 27
Thus, have We sent you (O Muhammad, pbuh) to a community before whom other communities have passed away, in order that you might recite unto them what We have inspired to you, while they disbelieve in the Most Beneficient (Allah) Say: “He is my Lord! La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He)! In Him is my trust, and to Him will be my return with repentance”.
Surah 13 Ar-Rad Verse 30
And (remember) the Day when We shall raise up from each nation a witness (their Messenger), then, those who have disbelieved will not be given leave (to put forward excuses), nor will they be allowed (to return to the world) to repent and ask for Allah’s Forgiveness (of their sins).
Surah 16 An-Nahl Verse 84
Then, verily, your Lord for those who do evil in ignorance and afterwards repent and do righteous deeds, verily, your Lord thereafter (to such) is Oft-Forgiving, Most-Merciful.
Surah 16 An-Nahl Verse 119
- …those who did evil in ignorance - Some of the Salaf said that this means that everyone who disobeys Allah is ignorant.
Your Lord knows best what is in your inner selves. If you are righteous, then, verily, He is Ever Most forgiving to those who turn to Him again and again in obedience, and in repentance.
Surah 17 Al-Isra Verse 25
- …again and again… – Possible interpretations given by various commentators are:
- This refers to those who commit sin then repent, and commit sin then repent (Said bin Al-Musayyib)
- They are the ones who return to goodness (Said bin Jubayr and Mujahid)
- This is the one who, when he remembers his sin when he is alone, he seeks the forgiveness of Allah (Ubayd bin Umayr)
- The best view on this matter is of those who said that it refers to the one who repents after committing sin, who comes back from disobedience to obedience and who leaves that which Allah hates for that which He loves and is pleased with (Ibn Jarir)
- According to a Sahih Hadith, the Prophet (pbuh) would say when he returned from a journey: ‘We have returned repenting, worshipping and praising our Lord’
And nothing prevents men from believing, now when the guidance (the Quran) has come to them, and from asking Forgiveness of their Lord, except that the ways of the ancients be repeated with them (i.e., their destruction decreed by Allah), or the torment be brought to them face to face?
Surah 18 Al-Kahf Verse 55
- This is to warn the people that the Quran has left no stone unturned in making the truth plain. It has employed all kinds of arguments, parables, similitude and used all the possible effective ways to appeal to the heart and the mind of man, and adopted the best possible style. If, in spite of this, they do not accept the truth, it is obvious that they are waiting for Allah’s scourge like the one that visited the former communities to make them realize their error.
And verily, I am indeed forgiving to him who repents, believes and does righteous good deeds, and then remains constant in doing them.
Surah 20 Ta Ha Verse 82
- ‘repents’ – means to turn away from what one was involved in of disbelief, associating partners with Allah, disobedience of Allah or hypocrisy
- ‘constant’ (ohtada) means:
- That he then does not doubt (Ibn Abbas)
- That he adheres to Islam until he dies (Qatadah)
- Allah forgives people but certain conditions are enunciated for the grant of pardon:
- Tawbah – which means that man should give up his transgression, disobedience, polytheism and disbelief
- To have faith – to sincerely believe in Allah and His Messenger (pbuh), and the Book and the Hereafter
- Righteous conduct – to act in accordance with the directives of Allah and His Messenger (pbuh)
- Constancy – in following the right way and a conscious effort not to revert to the wrong path.
We see here that there is a specific order in which these conditions are presented
So those who believe (in the Oneness of Allah - Islamic Monotheism) and do righteous good deeds, for them is forgiveness and Rizqun Qarim (generous provision, i.e., Paradise).
Surah 22 Al-Hajj Verse 50
And let not those among you who are blessed with graces and wealth swear not to give (any sort of help) to their kinsmen, Al-Masakin (the needy), and those who left their homes for Allah’s Cause. Let them pardon and forgive. Do you not love that Allah should forgive you? And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
Surah 24 An-Nur Verse 22
- The Ayah was revealed concerning Abu Bakr As-Siddiq, when he swore that he would not help Mistah bin Uthathah after he said what he said about Aishah (the Slander Episode)
The torment will be doubled to him (who commits Shirk, murder or adultery) on the Day of Resurrection, and he will abide therein in disgrace; except those who repent and believe and do righteous good deeds; for those Allah will change their sins into good deeds, and Allah is Ever Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. And whoever repents and does righteous good deeds; then, verily, he repents towards Allah with true repentance.
Surah 25 Al-Furqan Verse 69-71
- ‘torment will be doubled to him’ – this possibly has two meanings:
- That the punishment will be perpetual, that it will continue without interruption
- That the person burdened with the sins of murder, adultery and other such vices in addition to shirk or atheism will be punished separately for his principal act of rebellion (i.e. Shirk/atheism) and then also for each of his other sins
- ‘change their sins into good deeds’ – this has two possible meanings:
- When a person repents and gives up his evil actions from the days of disbelief and begins to perform virtuous deeds, then in this new phase of life, of faith and righteous conduct, his good deeds will replace the evil deeds of his past.
- As a result of his repentance, not only are the evil deeds which he committed during this period of disbelief and sinful living forgiven, but each person will be rewarded for having given up a life of disbelief and transgression and for replacing it with obedience and faith. Moreover, for as many times as such people feel ashamed of their past evil deeds, they will be rewarded that same number of times for having asked for forgiveness from Allah. Feeling ashamed of one’s sins and asking for forgiveness is, in itself, a good deed. In this manner, all of one’s evil deeds will eventually be replaced by good deeds and one will not only be saved from punishment, but will also be amply rewarded.
But as for him who repented (from polytheism and sins), believed (in the Oneness of Allah and believed in His Messenger, pbuh) and did righteous deeds, then he will be among those who are successful.
Surah 28 Al-Qasas Verse 67
So set you (O Muhammad, pbuh) your face towards the religion of pure Islamic Monotheism Hanifa (worship none but Allah Alone) Allah’s Fitrah, with which He has created mankind. No change let there be in Khalqillah (i.e., the Religion of Allah Islamic Monotheism), that is the straight religion, but most of men know not. (Always) Turning in repentance to Him (only), and be afraid and dutiful to Him; and perform As Salat (the prayer) and be not of Al Mushrikun (the disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah, polytheists, idolaters).
Surah 30 Ar-Rum Verses 30-31
And when harm touches men, they cry sincerely only to their Lord (Allah), turning to Him in repentance; but when He gives them a taste of His Mercy, behold, a party of them associate partners in worship with their Lord. So as to be ungrateful for the graces which We have bestowed on them. Then enjoy (your short life), but you will come to know.
Surah 30 Ar-Rum Verses 33-34
- Once man is rescued from his distress by dint of Allah’s mercy, he soon begins to make offerings to his false gods, claiming that it is because of the intercession or blessings of such and such saint or of such and such a saint’s resting place that they have been rescued from their distress
- ‘…but you will come to know’ – By Allah, if a law enforcement officer were to say this to anyone, he would be afraid; so how about when the One Who is issuing the warning is the One Who merely says to a thing “Be!” and it is?
Evil has appeared on land and sea because of what the hands of men have earned (by oppression and evil deeds), that He (Allah) may make them taste a part of that which they have done, in order that they may return (by repenting to Allah, and begging His pardon).
Surah 30 Ar-Rum Verse 41
- ‘Evil’ – Mujahid said “Evil on land means the killing of the son of Adam, and evil on the sea means piracy”. Zaid bin Rafi said it means “The rain is withheld from the land and this is followed by famine and it is withheld from the sea, adversely affecting the animals which live in it”
- It was reported in the Sahih: ‘When the evil doer dies, it is a relief for the people, the land, the trees and the animals’
- Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal recorded that Abu Qahdham said: “At the time of Ziyad or Ibn Ziyad, a man found a cloth in which were wrapped grains of wheat which were as big as date stones; on it was written: “This grew at a time when justice prevailed””
And as for those who are Fasiqun (disbelievers and disobedient to Allah) their abode will be the Fire, every time they wish to get away there from, they will be put back thereto, and it will be said to them: ‘Taste you the torment of the Fire which you used to deny’. And verily, We will make them taste of the near torment prior to the supreme torment, in order that they may (repent and) return. And who does more wrong than he who is reminded of the Ayat (proofs, signs, evidences) of his Lord, then turn aside there from? Verily, We shall exact retribution from the Mujrimun (criminals, disbelievers, sinners).
Surah 32 As-Sajdah verse 20-22
- The ‘supreme torment’ here refers to the chastisement to which the unbelievers and evil-doers will be subjected in the World-to-Come. The verse also speaks of ‘near torment’ which, according to Ibn Abbas, refers to “diseases and problems in this world, and the things that happen to its people as a test from Allah to His servants so that they will repent to Him”. The tests in the world are several, as in, death of kith-and-kin, tragic accidents, and losses and failures of various types which people face in the course of their lives. Problems include storms, earthquakes, floods, famines, riots, warfare and other calamities which befall a people collectively, sometimes affecting the lives of millions.
- The ‘near torment’ afflicts people in order that they may take heed before the ‘supreme torment’ overtakes them. They should give up those patterns of thought and action that leads them to the immense chastisement of the Hereafter. Calamities visit him so that he may purge his mind of the delusion that there is no power above him capable of causing harm. Allah has so arranged the order of things in the world that individuals, nations and countries are periodically afflicted with devastating calamities in order to remind them of their utter helplessness and to impress upon them that there exists a pervasive supreme power
- Whenever any calamity from Allah strikes man it becomes evident that he can neither avert it himself nor by invoking any jinn, spirit or god. Far from being simply natural occurings, these calamities serve as a warning from Allah to dispel man’s misperceptions and prompt him to recognize the reality of things. By deriving lessons from these, man can mend his ways during his existence by embracing right beliefs and reforming his conduct. This alone will save him from the greater chastisement of the Hereafter
- ‘Ayat of his Lord’ – refers to the signs, proofs, evidences, and are quite pervasive and cover a pretty wide range. If one bears in mind the Quranic description of these signs, one will find they fall under the following six categories:
- The signs found in the wide expanses of the heaven and the earth and in the overall system underlying the working of the Universe;
- The signs manifest in man’s procreation, his structure and his existence as a whole;
- The signs found in man’s intuition, in his unconscious and subconscious, and in his moral conceptions;
- The signs in the human experience of history;
- The signs manifest in the earthly and heavenly calamities that befall man; and
- The signs that Allah has sent down through the agency of His Messengers in order to apprise man, in a reasonable and persuasive manner, of the truths that are corroborated by these signs
- ‘Mujrimun’ – Taken together, the Ayat of the Lord consistently and emphatically impress upon man that he is neither without any God nor is he the servant of a multiplicity of gods. Furthermore, man has not been sent to this world as one who is absolutely free and unaccountable. Thus, all possible measures have been taken by Allah to direct man to the Right Way. A whole range of signs have been provided for his admonition. He has also been granted the faculties of sight, hearing and rational thinking. So if a man then turns a blind eye to all these signs, none is more criminal than man himself
Verily, the Muslim men and women, the believers men and women, the men and the women who are obedient, the men and the women who are truthful, the men and the women who are patient, the men and the women who are humble, the men and the women who give Sadaqat, the men and the women who observe Saum, the men and the women who guard their chastity, and the men and the women who remember Allah much with their hearts and tongues. Allah has prepared for them forgiveness and a great reward.
Surah 33 Al-Ahzab Verse 35
- Narrated Umm Salamah (wife of the Prophet, pbuh) that she asked the Prophet (pbuh), “Why is that we are not mentioned in the Quran as men are?” Then one day without my realising it, he was calling from the minbar and I was combing my hair, so I tied my hair back then went out of my chamber in my house, and I started listening out, and he was saying from the minbar (this verse)
- Muslims and believers are used separately indicating that Iman (faith) is something more than Islam and that it is more specific. The Prophet (pbuh) has stated the following which represents the true state of faith (Iman): ‘He who is satisfied with Allah as his Lord, with Islam as his religion, and with Muhammad (pbuh) as His Messenger has truly savoured the taste of faith’ So beyond Islam there is a higher level to be reached, which is Iman.
- Patience is the attribute of those who are steadfast, which is patience in the face of adversity and knowing that what is decreed will inevitably come to pass. So, they face it with patience and steadfastness. Patience is the most difficult when disaster first strikes, then after it becomes easier, and this is true steadfastness.
- ‘humble’ – the word used is Khashi (root Khushu, meaning serenity and tranquillity) which means dignity and humility. What motivates a person to be like this is the fear of Allah and the awareness that He is constantly watching, as mentioned in Hadith: ‘Worship Allah as if you can see Him, for if you cannot see Him, He can see you’ [humble before Allah also alludes to Prayers]
- ‘remember Allah much’ – narrated Abu Said Al Khudri that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘If a man wakes his wife at night and they pray two Rakahs, they will be recorded that night as being among the men and the women who remembers Allah’
- The verse indicates the acts that carry weight in Allah’s sight. In fact they represent the core values of Islam. As far as these values are concerned, no distinction is made between men and women. Each of them, of course, performs different functions in their respective spheres of activity. However, if their acts are permeated with the same values, they will carry the same weight in Allah’s sight and fetch identical rewards.
O you who believe! Have Taqwa of Allah, and speak (always) the truth. He will direct you to do righteous good deeds and will forgive you your sins. And whosoever obeys Allah and His Messenger (pbuh), he has indeed achieved a great achievement.
Surah 33 Al-Ahzab Verse 70-71
- ‘speak the truth’ – meaning, to speak in a straight forward manner, with no crookedness or distortion
- Allah promises in this verse that if believers have taqwa of Him and they speak the truth, He will reward them by:
- Making their deeds righteous i.e. enabling them to do righteous deeds; and
- Forgiving them their past sins
(The Hour shall come) That He may recompense those who believe and do righteous good deeds. Those, theirs is forgiveness and Rizqun Qarim (generous provisions i.e., Paradise).
Surah 34 Saba verse 4
And they (disbelievers) will say (in the Hereafter): “We do believe (now)”; but how could they receive (Faith and the acceptance of their repentance by Allah) from a place so far off (i.e., to return to the worldly life again). Indeed, they did disbelieve (in the Oneness of Allah, Islam, the Quran and Muhammad, pbuh) before (in this world), and they (used to) conjecture about the unseen [i.e., the Hereafter, Hell, Paradise, Resurrection and the Promise of Allah, etc. (by saying) all that is untrue], from a far place. And a barrier will be set between them and that which they desire [i.e., At-Taubah (turning to Allah in repentance) and the accepting of Faith], as was done in the past with the people of their kind. Verily, they have been in grave doubt.
Surah 34 Saba Verses 52-54
Those who disbelieve, theirs will be a severe torment; and those who believe and do righteous good deeds, theirs will be forgiveness and a great reward (Paradise).
Surah 35 Fatir Verse 7
You (O Muhammad, pbuh) can only warn him who follows the Reminder (the Quran), and fears the Most Beneficent (Allah) unseen. Bear you to such one the glad tidings of forgiveness, and a generous reward (i.e., Paradise).
Surah 36 Ya-Sin Verse 11
Be patient (O Muhammad, pbuh) of what they say, and remember Our slave Dawud (David), endued with power. Verily, he was ever oft-returning in all matters and in repentance (toward Allah) … And to Dawud (David) We gave Sulaiman (Solomon). How excellent (a) slave! Verily, he was ever oft-returning in repentance (to Us)!... “And take in your hand a bundle of thin grass and strike therewith (your wife), and break not your oath” (O Ayyub). Truly! We found him patient. How excellent (a) slave! Verily, he was ever oft-returning in repentance (to Us)!
Surah 38 Sad Verses 17/30/44
Say: ‘O Ibadi (My slaves) who have transgressed against themselves (by committing evil deeds and sins)! Despair not of the Mercy of Allah, verily, Allah forgives all sins. Truly, He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. And turn in repentance and in obedience with true faith to your Lord and submit to Him before the torment comes upon you, then you will not be helped. And follow the best of that which is sent down to you (i.e., the Quran) from your Lord before the torment comes on you suddenly while you perceive not!’
Surah 39 Az-Zumar Verses 53-55
- The Ayah is a call to all sinners, be they disbelievers or others, to repent and turn to Allah. This Ayah tells us that Allah will forgive all the sins of those who repent to Him and turn back to Him, no matter what or how many his sins are. This cannot be interpreted as meaning that sins will be forgiven without repentance, because Shirk can only be forgiven for the one who repents from it.
- Ibn Abbas said: Anyone who makes the servants of Allah despair of His mercy after this (ayah) has rejected the Book of Allah; but a person cannot repent until Allah decrees that he should repent.
- Narrated Abu Ayyub Al-Ansari that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘If you did not commit sins, Allah would create people who would sin so that He could forgive them’
It is He, Who shows you His Ayat (proofs, evidences, signs) and sends down (rain with which grows) provision for you from the sky. And none remembers but those who turn (to Allah) in obedience and in repentance. So, call you (O Muhammad, pbuh and the believers) upon (or invoke) Allah making (your) worship pure for Him (Alone). However much the disbelievers may hate (it).
Surah 40 Al-Ghafir Verses 13-14
And in whatsoever you differ, the decision thereof is with Allah (He is the ruling Judge). (And say O Muhammad, pbuh to these polytheists:) Such is Allah, my Lord in Whom I put my trust, and to Him I turn in all of my affairs and in repentance.
Surah 42 Ash-Shura Verse 10
…Allah chooses for Himself whom He wills, and guides to Himself who turns to Him in repentance and in obedience.
Surah 42 Ash-Shura Verse 13
And He it is Who accepts repentance from His slaves, and forgives sins, and knows what you do.
Surah 42 Ash-Shura Verse 25
- Repentance means man’s feeling regretful at his misdeeds coupled with a firm resolve to give them up and never repeat them. In fact, true repentance also requires that one should make repairs for any harm that one might have caused any person. One is required to try one’s best to make repairs, and where this is not possible one should implore Allah’s forgiveness and constantly strive to remove the dark spot from one’s life-record by superogatory acts of goodness and charity. Let it be clear, however, that the word repentance can apply only to that act which is accompanied by a desire to please Allah. For abandoning any evil acts, if done for any other consideration, is not reckoned as repentance
And those who avoid the greater sins and Al-Fawahish and when they are angry, they forgive. And those who answer the Call of their Lord, and perform As-Salat, and who (conduct) their affairs by mutual consultation, and who spend of what We have bestowed on them…And verily, whoever shows patience and forgives, that truly would be from the things recommended by Allah.
Surah 42 Ash-Shura Verses 37-38/43
- ‘when they are angry, they forgive’ – Believers are not revengeful; they overlook the excesses committed by others and keep good control over their anger. This according to Quran is one of the best traits of a human being. It is projected as one of the main reasons for the Prophet’s resounding success. Aishah relates that “the Prophet (pbuh) never took revenge on personal grounds. He enforced punishment only when some Divine command was violated”
- That the believers conduct their affairs through consultation is highlighted as one of their excellent traits. The following are pertinent to note:
- If one arbitrarily decides something which concerns others it is tantamount to committing excesses against them and no one has the right to act high-handedly in matters of common interest. Justice requires that all persons concerned with the matter should be consulted while taking a decision. If the issue relates to a very large number of people, their representatives should be taken into confidence.
- Any person who acts arbitrarily on public issues and disdainfully disregards others does so either to serve his personal interests or out of arrogance, both these traits are morally reprehensible.
- It is a huge responsibility to adjudge others’ interest. A God-fearing person realises the tremendous burden of his accountability to Allah, at times, he is deterred by this thought from accepting positions of responsibility. Consultation may help in arriving at a sound and just decision. Even if an inadvertent mistake is committed, any specific individual cannot be faulted on that count.
These three considerations underlie the Islamic teachings with regard to mutual consultation as a requirement of Islam’s broader ethical code.
- The Islamic way of life pre-supposes mutual consultation at every level, both minor and major. Domestic issues should be decided together by husband and wife, and as children come of age, they should also be consulted. Family matters may be best resolved by taking into consideration the opinion of all adults. As for issues concerning a tribe or town, if all relevant people cannot be consulted their representatives should settle matters in an acceptable manner. The head of the state should draw upon the suggestion of truly representative advisors.
- In terms of its nature and essence, the Quranic directive for mutual consultation calls for the following:
- People should enjoy full freedom of expression in matters concerning their rights and interests. They should be fully informed as regards how their affairs are decided.
- People entrusted with running collective affairs should be appointed with the consent of the people.
- That the ruler should appoint only those people to advise him who enjoy public confidence.
- That those who are consulted should express their views to the best of their knowledge and in consonance with their conscience.
- That the opinion arrived at by consensus or majority vote of the consultative assembly should be accepted.
The Quran categorically states that mutual consultation should be the basis of running public affairs. It should be clear, however, that consultation is confined to the limits fixed by Allah’s Law. Muslims are obliged to turn, in the first place, to Allah and His Messesnger (pbuh) in all their affairs. They cannot overrule or alter (by consultation) what has already been decided by Allah and His Messesnger (pbuh)
And those who, when an oppressive wrong is done to them, take revenge; the recompense for an evil is an evil like thereof; but whoever forgives and makes reconciliation, his reward is with Allah. Verily, He likes not the Zalimun (oppressors). And indeed, whosoever takes revenge after he has suffered wrong, for such there is no way (of blame) against them. The way (of blame) is only against those who oppress men and rebel in the earth without justification; for such there will be a painful torment.
Surah 42 Ash-Shura Verses 39-42
- Justice has been prescribed in the form of the prescribed laws of equality in punishment (Al-Qisas), but the better way (which means forgiveness) is recommended. Even while taking revenge, the following basic rules need be noted:
- A person may not exceed the extent of wrong done to him
- It is better to pardon him wherever this can bring about reform
- While taking revenge a person should be careful lest he becomes a tyrant himself. It is not permissible to commit a sin by way of revenge for the sin committed against oneself
So, know (O Muhammad, pbuh) that La ilaha illallah (none has the right to be worshipped but Allah), and ask for forgiveness for your sin, and also for (the sin of) believing men and believing women. And Allah knows well your moving about, and your place of rest.
Surah 47 Muhammad Verse 19
And Paradise will be brought near to the Muttaqun not far off. (It will be said): ‘this is what you were promised – (it is) for those oft-returning (to Allah) in sincere repentance, and those who preserve their covenant with Allah. Who feared the Most Gracious (Allah) in the Ghaib (unseen) and came with a heart turned in repentance’.
Surah 50 Qaf Verse 31-33
- ‘in the Ghaib’ – who feared Allah in secret when only Allah the Exalted and Most Honoured could see him. The Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘And a man who remembered Allah the Exalted while alone, and his eyes become tearful’
Verily, the Muttaqun will be in the midst of Gardens and Springs (in the Paradise), taking joy in the things which their lord has given them. Verily, they were before this Muhsinun. They used to sleep but little by night (invoking their Lord and praying, with fear and hope). And in the hours before dawn, they were (found) asking (Allah) for forgiveness. And in their properties, there was the right of the Sa’il (the beggar who asked) and the Mahrum.
Surah 51 Al-Dhariyat Verses 15-19
- ‘they used to sleep but little at night’ – The scholars of tafseer have two opinions about this:
- They used to spend a little part of every night awake.
- Every night, they would worship Allah even during a little part of the night (Ibn Abbas)
- Hardly a night would pass by them that they did not pray to Allah either in the beginning or the middle of it (Mutarrif bin Abdullah)
- Only a few nights, if any, would they sleep through the night until the morning without praying Tahajjud (Mujahid)
- They used to pray between Al-Maghrib and Al-Isha (Anas bin Malik and Abu Al Aliyah)
- They used to spend a little part of the night in sleep.
- They performed voluntary night prayer and would not sleep during the night except a little. They were active and would continue until they were seeking forgiveness right before dawn (Al Hasan Al Basri)
- Narrated Abdullah bin Salam that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘O People! Feed with food, keep relations to kith and kin, spread the Salam, pray at night while people are asleep, and you will enter Paradise in peace’
- Narrated Abdullah bin Umar that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘Verily, there are lofty rooms in Paradise in which their outside can be seen from the inside and their inside can be seen from the outside’ Abu Musa Al Ashari said “Who are they for, O Allah’s Messenger?” He said: ‘For those who use soft speech, feed food and spend the night in voluntary prayer while people are asleep’
- ‘and in the hours before dawn’ – they would stand in prayer during the night and delayed asking Allah for forgiveness until later hours before dawn. The Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘Allah, the Most High, descends each night to the lowest heavens when the last third of the night remains. He says “Is there anyone who is repenting so that I may accept his repentance? Is there anyone seeking forgiveness, so that I may forgive him? Is there anyone asking of Me, so that I may grant him request?” until Fajr begins’
- ‘Mahrum’ refers to:
The poor, who does not receive stipend from the Muslim treasury, nor does he have a means of income, nor a profession (Ibn Abbas and Mujahid)
The displaced, who does not have a profession to easily earn an income (Aishah)
The one who does not ask the people for anything (Qatadah and Az Zuhri)
And verily, for those who do wrong, there is another punishment before this; but most of them know not.
Surah 52 At-Tur Verse 47
- ‘another punishment before this’ – refers to the torment in this world and in their graves
- Narrated Anas that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘When a human being is laid in his grave and his companions return and he even hears their footsteps, two angels come to him and make him sit and ask him: “What did you use to say about this man, Muhammad (pbuh)?” He will say, “I testify that he is Allah’s slave and His Messenger”. Then it will be said to him, “Look at your place in the Hell-Fire. Allah has changed for you a place in Paradise instead of it”’. The Prophet (pbuh) added, ‘The dead person will see both his places. But a disbeliever or a hypocrite will say to the angels, “I do not know, but I used to say what the people used to say!” It will be said to him, “Neither did you know nor did you take the guidance (by following the Quran)”. Then he will be hit with an iron hammer between his two ears, and he will cry and that cry will be heard by whatsoever near to him except human beings and jinn’
- ‘but most of them know not’ – means, “We will torment them in the life of the world and test them with various hardships, so that they might go back and repent. However they do not understand what is happening to them or why, because when the torment is removed, they revert to committing the worst of what they used to do before”
Those who avoid great sins and Al-Fawahish (illegal sexual intercourse and other evil acts) except the small faults, verily, your Lord is of vast forgiveness. He knows you well when He created you from the earth (Adam), and when you were fetuses in your mothers’ wombs. So, ascribe not purity to yourselves. He knows best him who fears Allah and keep his duty to Him.
Surah 53 An-Najm Verse 32
- The word lamam (translated as minor sins) as found in the original is used for a small quantity of something, or its slight effect, or its mere closeness, or its existence for a short time. This word is used to express the sense that a person did not commit an act but was very near to committing it. On the basis of its usages some commentators have taken the word lamam in the meaning of minor sins. Some others have taken it in the meaning that a person should practically reach very near a grave sin but should desist from actually committing it. Still others take it in the sense of a person’s remaining involved in a sin temporarily and then desisting from it. And according to some it implies that a person should think of, or wish, or intend to commit a sin but should rake no practical steps towards it. In this regard, the views of the companions and their immediate followers are as follows:
- Zaid bin Aslam and Ibn Zaid opine, and a saying of Abdullah bin Abbas is also to the same effect, that it signifies those sins which the people had committed in the pre-Islamic days of ignorance, then after embracing Islam they refrained from them.
- Another view of Ibn Abbas is, and the same is also the view of Abu Hurairah, Abdullah bin Amr bin Aas, Mujahid, Hasan Basri and Abu Salih, that it implies a person’s being involved in a grave sin or indecency temporarily, or occasionally, and then giving it up.
- Abdullah bin Masud, Masruq and Shabi say, and the same has also been reported from Abu Hurairah and Abdullah bin Abbas in authentic traditions, that this implies a person’s approaching the very point of a grave sin and crossing all its preliminaries but then restraining himself at the final stage, e.g. a person goes out with the intention of stealing but refrains from it in the end, or has close association with other women, but refrains from committing adultery.
- Abdullah bin Zubair, Ikrimah, Qatadah and Dahhak say that this signifies those minor sins for which no punishment has been prescribed in the world nor any threat of punishment held out in the Hereafter.
- Saeed bin al-Musayyab says that this implies one’s thinking of a sin in the mind but restraining himself from committing it practically.
- These are the different explanations which have been reported in the traditions from the companions and their immediate followers. The majority of the later commentators and doctors of law and jurists are of the opinion that this verse and verse 31 of Surah An-Nisa classify sins into two main kinds: the major sins and the minor sins, and these two verses give man the hope that if he abstains from the major sins and open indecencies, Allah will overlook his minor errors. Although some distinguished scholars have also opined that no sin is minor and the disobedience of Allah is by itself a major sin, yet as stated by Imam Ghazali the distinction between the major and the minor sins is something which cannot be denied, for the sources of knowledge of the Shariah values and injunctions all point to this.
- As for the question, what is the distinction between the major and the minor sins, and what kinds of sins are major and what kinds of them minor? scholars are satisfied that: Every such act is a major sin which has been forbidden by a clear ordinance of the divine Book and the Shariah of the Prophet (peace be upon him), or for which Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him) have prescribed a punishment in the world, or have held out a threat of punishment in the Hereafter, or have cursed the one guilty of committing it, or given the news of infliction of punishment on those guilty of committing it. Apart from this class of sins all other acts which are disapproved by the Shariah, come under the definition of minor sins. Likewise, the mere desire for a major sin, or an intention to commit it, is also not a major sin but a minor sin; so much so that even crossing all the preliminaries of a major sin does not constitute a major sin unless one has actually committed it. However, even a minor sin becomes a major sin in case it is committed with a feeling of contempt for religion and of arrogance against Allah, and the one guilty of it does not consider the Shariah that has declared it an evil worthy of any attention and reverence.
- The forgiveness for the one guilty of minor sins is not for the reason that a minor sin is no sin, but for the reason that Allah Almighty does not treat His servants narrow-mindedly and does not seize them on trifling faults; if the servants adopt piety and abstain from major sins and indecencies, He will not seize them for their minor errors and will forgive them magnanimously on account of His infinite mercy.
Race with one another in hastening towards forgiveness from your Lord (Allah), and Paradise, the width thereof is as the width of the heaven and the earth, prepared for those who believe in Allah and His Messengers. That is the Grace of Allah which He bestows on whom He is pleased with. And Allah is the Owner of a Great Bounty. Surah 57 Al-Hadid Verse 21
O you who believe! Turn to Allah with sincere repentance; it may be that your Lord will expiate from you your sins, and admit you into Gardens under which rivers flow (Paradise) – the Day that Allah will not disgrace the Prophet (Muhammad, pbuh) and those who believe with him. Their light will run forward before them and (their records) in their right hands. They will say: ‘Our Lord! Keep perfect our light for us and grant us forgiveness. Verily, You are able to do all things’.
Surah 66 At_Tahrim Verse 8
- Narrated Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘By Allah! I seek Allah’s forgiveness and turn to Him in repentance for more than seventy times a day’
Verily, those who fear their Lord unseen theirs will be forgiveness and a great reward (Paradise).
Surah 67 Al-Mulk verse 12
I (Nuh, pbuh) said (to them – the disbelievers: people of Nuh, pbuh): ‘Ask forgiveness from your Lord, verily, He is Oft-Forgiving; He will send rain to you in abundance. And give you increase in wealth and children, and bestow on you gardens and bestow on you rivers’ What is the matter with you that you hope not for reward.
Surah 71 Nuh Verses 10-13
- The verse gives a position of the invitation with encouragement; that if you repent to Allah, seek His forgiveness and obey Him, He will increase your provisions for you in the form of:
- Water as rain
- Blessings of the earth as crops
- Live stock animals
- Wealth and children
This Surah is recommended to be recited in the Prayer for rain due to this Ayah; and has been reported from Umar bin Al-Khattab (that he used it such)
