Grades and Differences
Mankind were one community and Allah sent Prophets with glad tidings and warnings, and with them He sent the Scripture in truth to judge between people in matters wherein they differed. And only those to whom (the Scripture) was given differed concerning it after clear proofs had come unto them through hatred, one to another. Then Allah by His Leave guided those who believed to the truth of that wherein they differed. And Allah guides whom He wills to a Straight Path.
Surah 2 Al-Baqarah Verse 213
- When ignorant people attempt to trace the history of ‘religion’ they tend to the view that man began his life in the darkness of polytheisrn and that in the course of time, corresponding to man's progress, this darkness gradually receded and light increased till man arrived at monotheism. The Qur'anic version, however, proclaims that man began his life in full light of the Truth. God revealed this Truth to the very first man He created, one to whom He intimated the right way of life for man. Thereafter the human race remained on the Right Way for some time and lived as one community. Later, however, people invented deviating ways. This did not happen because Truth had not been communicated to them. The cause was rather that some people wilfully sought to acquire privileges, benefits and advantages beyond their legitimate limits, and thus subjected others to injustices. It was in order to enable people to overcome this corruption that God sent His Prophets. These Prophets were not sent to found separate religions in their own names and bring new religious communities into existence. Rather the purpose of the Prophets was to illuminate before people the Truth which they had allowed to be lost, and once again make them into one community.
- Al-Bukhari and Muslim reported that Aishah narrated that when Allah’s Messenger used to wake up at night to pray, he would say: ‘O Allah, the Lord of (angels) Jibril, Mikail and Israfil, Creator of the heavens and earth and Knower of the seen and the unseen. You judge between Your servants regarding what they have disputed in, so guide me to what have been the subject of dispute of the truth by Your leave. Indeed, You guide whom You will to the straight path’.
- A Dua (prayer) reads: “O Allah! Show us the truth as truth, and bestow adherence to it on us. Show us the evil as evil, and make us stay away from it, and do not confuse us regarding the reality of evil so that we will not be led astray by it, and make us leaders for the believers”.
Truly, the religion with Allah is Islam. Those who were given the Scripture (Jews and Christians) did not differ except, out of mutual jealousy, after knowledge had come to them. And whoever disbelieves in the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, signs, revelations, etc.) of Allah, then surely, Allah is Swift in calling to account.
Surah 3 Al-Imran Verse 19
- In the sight of Allah there is only one system of life and way of conduct which is both in accord with reality and morally right. This consists of man’s acknowledging Allah as his Lord and the sole object of his worship and devotion; of surrendering himself unreservedly to Allah in obedience and service. In doing so he should follow in toto the guidance communicated by Allah through His Messengers rather than try to devise ways of serving Allah according to his own lights. This mode of thought and action is known as Islam, and it is only reasonable that the Lord and Creator of the universe should accept nothing less from His creatures and servants. In his folly man thinks that he has the right to believe in and follow every doctrine that comes his way whether it be atheism or idolatry. In the sight of the Sovereign of the universe, however, all such attitudes amount to nothing short of rebellion against Allah.
- The religion of every Messenger of Allah, in every age and clime, was none other than Islam (submission to Allah). Likewise, every Divine book, in whichever language it was revealed, and to whichever people it was addressed, contained the teachings of Islam. The various religions which have spread among mankind are distortions of this true, original religion, and are the result of tampering. Coveting privileges over and above those to which they were entitled, people altered the beliefs, principles and injunctions of the true religion in a manner conducive to their own interests.
Let there arise out of you a group of people inviting to all that is good (Islam), enjoining Al-Maruf (i.e., Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam orders one to do) and forbidding Al-Munkar (polytheism and disbelief and all that Islam has forbidden). And it is they who are the successful. And be not as those who divided and differed among themselves after the clear proofs had come to them. It is they for whom there is an awful torment.
Surah 3 Al-Imran Verse 104-105
- …those who divided and differed among themselves…- The reference is to those communities which received clear and straightforward teachings of the true religion but who had abandoned the fundamentals, forming separate sects around trivial and subsidiary questions; they became so engrossed in quarrelling over superfluous and insignificant questions that they lost sight of the mission Allah had entrusted to them, and even lost interest in those fundamentals of belief and righteous conduct which are essential for man’s salvation and felicity.
They are in varying grades with Allah, and Allah is All-Seer of what you do. Surah 3 Al-Imran Verse 163
- The people of righteousness and the people of evil are in grades. Similarly, there are various degrees and dwellings in Paradise, as well as various degrees and dwellings in the Fire (Hell)
And wish not for the things in which Allah has made some of you to excel others. For men there is reward for what they have earned, for women there is reward for what they have earned, and ask Allah of His bounty. Surely Allah is Ever All-Knower of everything.
Surah 4 An-Nisa Verse 32
- The verse embodies a very important directive; by heeding it, man would be able to achieve a great measure of peace and tranquillity. Allah has not made all men alike. Some are handsome while others are ugly. The voices of some are sweet and those of others are repulsive. Some are physically strong others are weak. Some have sound limbs others have inherent deformities. Some possess outstanding physical and mental abilities while others lack them. Some are born in favourable circumstances and others not. Some have been endowed with more resources than others. It is this diversity that gives variety to human civilization, and hence serves a useful purpose. Whenever man superimposes distinctions of his own over and above his natural inequality he disrupts the natural order of things, and paves the way for corruption.
- Man is naturally inclined to feel uneasy whenever he sees someone else ahead of him. This is the root of jealousy, cut-throat competition and animosity, of mutual strife and conflict. Allah directs us not to allow this kind of mentality (of using unfair means when fair means are ineffective in achieving ambitions) to take hold of us. The import of the directive is that one should not yearn for the good that Allah has bestowed on others. One should rather pray to Allah to bestow upon one the good which is in one’s best interest according to Allah’s wisdom and knowledge
O you who believe! Obey Allah and obey the Messenger (Muhammad, pbuh), and those of you (Muslims) who are in authority. (And) if you differ in anything amongst yourselves, refer it to Allah and His Messenger (pbuh), if you believe in Allah and in the Last Day. That is better and more suitable for final determination.
Surah 4 An-Nisa Verse 59
…To each among you We have prescribed a law and a clear way. If Allah had willed, He would have made you one nation, but that (He) may test you in what He has given you; so, compete in good deeds. The return of you (all) is to Allah; then He will inform you about that in which you used to differ.
Surah 5 Al-Mai’dah Verse 48
- Allah has instituted different laws to test His servants’ obedience to what He legislates for them, thus, He rewards or punishes them according to their actions and what they intend
For all there will be degrees (or ranks) according to what they did. And your Lord is not unaware of what they do.
Surah 6 Al-An’am Verse 132
Verily, those who divide their religion and break up into sects you (O Muhammad, pbuh) have no concern with them in the least. Their affair is only with Allah, who then will tell them what they used to do.
Surah 6 Al-An’am Verse 159
- It is said that the Prophet (pbuh) recited this verse and said: ‘These people are those who invent new things (Bid’ah) in religion and the followers of the vain desires of this Muslim nation, and their repentance will not be accepted’
Say: ‘Shall I seek a Lord other than Allah, while He is the Lord of all things? No person earns any (sin) except against himself, and no bearer of burdens shall bear the burden of another. Then to your Lord is your return, so He will tell you that wherein you have been differing’.
Surah 6 Al-An’am Verse 164
And it is He who has made you generations coming after generations, replacing each other on earth. And He has raised you in ranks, some above others that He may try you in that which He has bestowed on you. Surely, your Lord is Swift in retribution, and certainly He is Oft-Forgiving, Most-Merciful.
Surah 6 Al-An’am Verse 165
- Allah tries the rich concerning his wealth and will ask him about how he appreciated it. He also tries the poor concerning his poverty and will ask him about his patience with it
The believers are only those who, when Allah is mentioned, feel a fear in their hearts and when His Verses (this Quran) are recited unto them, they (i.e., the Verses) increase their Faith; and they put their trust in their Lord (Alone); Who perform As-Salat (the prayer) and spend out of that We have provided them. It is they who are the believers in truth. For them are grades of dignity with their Lord, and Forgiveness and a generous provision (Paradise).
Surah 8 Al-Anfal Verses 2-4
And obey Allah and His Messenger (pbuh) and do not dispute (with one another) lest you lose courage and your strength departs, and be patient. Surely, Allah is with those who are As-Sabirun.
Surah 8 Al-Anfal Verse 46
And if your Lord had so willed, He could surely have made mankind one Ummah (nation or community, following one religion i.e., Islam), but they will not cease to disagree. Except him on whom your Lord has bestowed His Mercy; and for that did He create them. And the Word of your Lord has been fulfilled (i.e., His saying): ‘Surely, I shall fill Hell with Jinn and men all together’.
Surah 11 Hud Verse 118-119
- Only those who have received the mercy of Allah by following the Messengers are excluded from differences of religions, beliefs, opinions. They are those who adhere to what they are commanded in the religion by the Messengers of Allah. In several narrations the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘Verily, the Jews split into seventy-one sects, and the Christians split into seventy-two sects, and this nation (of Muslims) will split into seventy-three sects. All of them will be in Fire except one sect’, They (the Companions) said, “Who are they (the saved sect) O Messenger of Allah?” He said, ‘The sect that is upon what my Companions and I are upon’
- ‘and for that did He create them’ – i.e. to show mercy to the good-doers, the blessed ones who are destined to Paradise, and not to show mercy to the evil-doers, the wretched ones who are destined to Hell (Ibn Abbas).
- Narrated Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet (pbuh) said: ‘Paradise and Hell-Fire debated. Paradise said, “None will enter me except the weak and despised of the people”. The Hell-Fire said, “I have inherited the haughty and the arrogant people”. Then Allah said to the Paradise “You are My Mercy and I grant mercy with you upon whoever I wish”. Then He said to the Hell Fire., “You are My Torment and I take vengeance with you upon whoever I wish. I will fill each one of you.” However, the Paradise will always have more bounties, to such an extent that Allah will create more creatures to dwell in it and enjoy its extra bounties. The Hell Fire will continue saying, “Are there any more (to enter me)”, until the Lord of Might places His Foot over it. Then it (Hell) will say, “Enough, enough, by Your Might”’
Shall he then who knows that what has been revealed to you from your Lord is the truth, be like him who is blind? But it is only the men of understanding that pay heed.
Surah 13 Ar-Ra’d Verse 19
And they swear by Allah their strongest oaths, that Allah will not raise up him who dies. Yes, (He will raise them up), a promise (binding) upon Him in truth, but most of mankind know not. In order that He may make manifest to them the truth of that wherein they differ, and that those who disbelieved (in Resurrection, and in the Oneness of Allah) may know that they were liars.
Surah 16 An-Nahl Verses 38-39
- In the verse above, those two things have been stated which rationally and morally require that there must be Resurrection and life after death, that is:
(1) To reveal what the reality was, and
(2) To reward or punish people in accordance with the right or wrong stand they took about it in this world.
It is common knowledge that since the creation of man on the earth there have been many differences regarding the reality which have been sowing dissension between families, nations and races. These have also led to the formation of many different societies, cultures and creeds on different theories. In every age millions of the torch bearers of each of these theories have been putting at stake all their life, property and honor to propagate and defend their favorite theory. Nay, there has always been such a bitter conflict between them that each group tried to annihilate the other, who, in his turn, stuck to it to the last. This being the case, common sense demands that such far reaching and serious differences should be cleared some time or other, so as to decide with certainty what was right and what was wrong, who was in the right and who was in the wrong. Obviously, it is not possible to lift the curtain from the reality in this world so as to reveal things in their true perspective. This is because the system on which this world has been created does not allow this. Therefore, there should be another world to fulfill this demand of common sense. This is not the demand of common sense alone but also of the moral sense, which requires that the partners in this conflict should be rewarded or punished according to right or wrong, just or unjust part they played in it. For, some of these committed cruelties on the others, who had to make sacrifices for their cause. Then each one should also bear the responsibility for formulating and practicing a moral or immoral philosophy which influenced millions and billions of others for better or worse. Moral sense demands that there should be a time for the moral consequences to take their due course. As this is not possible in this world there should be another world for the purpose.
And be not like her who undoes the thread which she has spun after it has become strong, by taking your oaths a means of deception among yourselves, lest a nation may be more numerous than another nation. Allah only tests you by this (i.e who obeys Allah and fulfills Allahs Covenant and who disobeys Allah and breaks Allahs Covenant). And on the Day of Resurrection, He will certainly make clear to you that wherein you used to differ (i.e., a believer confesses and believes in the Oneness of Allah and in the Prophethood of Prophet Muhammad, pbuh which the disbeliever denies it and that was their difference amongst them in the life of this world).
Surah 16 An-Nahl Verse 92
See how We prefer some of them to others (in this world), and verily, the Hereafter will be greater in degrees and greater in preferment.
Surah 17 Al-Isra Verse 21
- In paradise there are one hundred levels, and the distance between one level and another is like the distance between heaven and earth. It is recorded in Sahih that the Prophet (pbuh) said; ‘The people of the highest level (of Paradise) will see the people of Illiyin as if they are looking at distant stars on the horizon’ [Illiyin – seventh heaven]
Truly! This, your Ummah [Sharia or religion (Islamic Monotheism)] is one religion, and I am your Lord, therefore worship Me (Alone). But they have broken up and differed as regards their religion among themselves. (And) they all shall return to Us. So, whoever does righteous good deeds while he is a believer (in the Oneness of Allah), his efforts will not be rejected. Verily! We record it in his Book of deeds.
Surah 21 Al-Anbiya Verses 92-94
Not alike are the blind and the seeing. Nor are the darkness and the light. Nor are the shade and the sun’s heat. Nor are the living and the dead. Verily, Allah makes whom He wills to hear, but you cannot make hear those who are in graves.
Surah 35 Fatir Verses 19-22
Surely, the religion (i.e., the worship and the obedience) is for Allah only. And those who take Auliya (protectors and helpers) besides Him (say): “We worship them only that they may bring us near to Allah”. Verily, Allah will judge between them concerning that wherein they differ. Truly, Allah guides not him who is a liar, and a disbeliever.
Surah 39 Az-Zumar Verse 3
And when Allah Alone is mentioned, the hearts of those who believe not in the Hereafter are filled with disgust (from the Oneness of Allah) and when those (whom they obey or worship) besides Him (like all false deities other than Allah -- it may be a Messenger, an angel, a pious man, a jinn, or any other creature even idols, graves of religious people, saints, priests, monks and the like) are mentioned, behold, they rejoice! Say (O Muhammad, pbuh): “O Allah! Creator of the heavens and the earth! All-Knower of the Ghaib (unseen) and the seen. You will judge between your slaves about that wherein they used to differ”.
Surah 39 Az-Zumar Verses 45-46
- This evil is common to almost all polytheistic people of the world, and even some unfortunate Muslims also suffer from it. They profess with the tongue that they believe in Allah, but when One Allah alone is mentioned before them, their faces are distorted, and they say: This man certainly does not believe in the saints and holy men, that is why he talks of Allah and Allah alone. And if others besides Allah are mentioned, they are delighted, and their faces brighten up with joy. This attitude of their’s shows as to who is the actual object of their love and esteem. Allama Alusi, in his commentary Ruh al-Maani, has related his own experience here. He says: “One day I saw that a man was invoking the help of a dead saint in his affliction. I said: ‘O bondsman of Allah, invoke Allah, for He Himself says: If My servants ask you, O Prophet, concerning Me, tell them I am quite near to them. I hear and answer the prayer of the supplicant when he calls to Me, (Surah Al-Baqarah, Ayat 186)’; Hearing this, the man became angry. The people told me afterwards that he said: This man is a denier of the saints. And some others heard him also say: The saints answer the prayers more promptly than does Allah”.
And not equal are the blind and those who see; nor are (equal) those who believe and do righteous good deeds, and those who do evil. Little do you remember.
Surah 40 Ghafir Verse 58
And in whatever you differ, the decision thereof is with Allah. (Say O Muhammad, pbuh) Such is Allah, my Lord in whom I put my trust, and to Him I turn in repentance.
Surah 42 Ash-Shura Verse 10
He (Allah) has ordained for you the same religion (Islam) which He ordained for Nuh (Noah), and that which We have inspired in you (O Muhammad, pbuh), and that which We ordained for Ibrahim (Abraham), Musa (Moses) and Isa (Jesus) saying you should establish religion (i.e., to do what it orders you to do practically), and make no divisions in it (i.e., various sects in religion). Intolerable for the Mushrikun, is that to which you (O Muhammad, pbuh) call them. Allah chooses for Himself whom He wills, and guides unto Himself who turns to Him in repentance and in obedience. And they divided not till after knowledge had come to them, through selfish transgression between themselves. And had it not been for a Word that went forth before from your Lord for an appointed term, the matter would have been settled between them. And verily, those who were made to inherit the Scripture [the Taurah (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)] after them (i.e., Jews and Christians) are in grave doubt concerning it (i.e., Allahs true religion Islam or the Quran).
Surah 42 Ash-Shura Verse 13-14
- …the same religion… - The verse clearly states that Muhammad (pbuh) is not the founder of any new religion (deen), nor was any of the Prophets a founder of a separate religion, but it has been one and the same religion which all the Prophets have been presenting from Allah from the very beginning, and the same is being presented by Muhammad (pbuh). In this regard, the first name mentioned is of the Prophet Noah, who was the first Prophet after the Flood. After him the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) has been mentioned, who is the last of the Prophets; then the Prophet Abraham has been mentioned, whom the Arabs acknowledged as their guide, and last of all, the Prophets Moses and Jesus have been mentioned to whom the Jews and the Christians attribute their religions. This does not mean that only these five Prophets had been enjoined this religion, but what is meant to be said is that all the Prophets who came to this world, brought one and the same religion and the names of the five illustrious Prophets have been mentioned only as examples through whom the world received the most well-known codes of divine law. Whatever shariah (law) was given by Allah to the community of a Prophet, was the deen for that community, and the establishment of the same deen was the object during his Prophethood. And since now is the period of the Prophet Muhammad’s (pbuh) Prophethood, the shariah which has been given to the Ummah of Muhammad (pbuh) is the deen of this time, and to establish the same is to establish the deen. As for the difference of the shariah, it does not mean that the shariahs sent by God were mutually contradictory, but it means that in their details there have been some differences owing to the different environments, take, for instance, the Prayer and the Fast. The Prayer has been obligatory in all the shariahs, but the qiblah of all the shariahs was not the same, and there was a difference in its times and rakahs and elements as well. Likewise, the Fast was obligatory in every shariah, but the month long fasting of Ramadan was not there in the other shariahs. From this it is not correct to conclude that the Prayer and the Fast as such are included in the establishment of deen but performing the Prayer in a particular way and observing the Fast at a particular time is excluded from it. However, the correct conclusion that one can draw is: To perform the Prayer and observe the Fast according to the rules and procedures that had been appointed for the people in the shariah of every Prophet amounted to establishment of deen in his time. In the present age the establishment of the deen is that these acts of worship be performed according to the procedures enjoined in the Shariah of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). The same is true about all other Shariah commandments as well.
- …till after knowledge had come to them… - The divisions were created not because Allah had failed to send the Prophets and the Books, and therefore, the people could not know the right way and so invented their own separate religions, sects, schools of thought and systems of life, but divisions appeared after knowledge had come to them from Allah. Therefore, Allah is not responsible for it, but the people who abandoned the clear principles of religion and commands of the Shariah and created their own creeds and religions are themselves responsible for it. The motive for creating the divisions was not good, but they resulted from the desire for ostentation, love of an independent entity, mutual rivalry and stubbornness, the urge to humiliate and defeat one another, and greed for worldly wealth and position. When the clever and ambitious saw that if the godly people followed the true religion honestly, there would only be One God before whom the people would bow, there would be one Messenger whom they would acknowledge as their guide and leader, there would be one Book which they would turn to and there would be a clearly defined creed and code of life which they would be following. In such a system there could be no place of distinction for themselves, on the strength of which they could have their own leadership flourish so that the people should rally round them, and bow to them and also make rich offerings to them. This was the real cause which became the motive of the invention of new creeds and philosophies, new ways and rites of worship and new systems of life, and diverted a large part of humanity from the highway of divine religion and misled them into blind alleys. Then the mutual disputes of the factions and their religious, economic and political conflicts gave rise to intense bitterness, which in turn led to bloodshed and violence among humanity.
Is it they who would portion out the Mercy of your Lord? It is We who portion out between them their livelihood in this world, and We raised some of them above others in ranks, so that some may employ others in their work. But the mercy (Paradise) of your Lord (O Muhammad, pbuh) is better than the (wealth of the world) which they amass.
Surah 43 Az-Zukhruf Verse 32
And indeed, We gave the Children of Israel the Scripture, and the understanding of the Scripture and its laws, and the Prophethood; and provided them with good things, and preferred them above the Alameen (mankind and jinns) (of their time, during that period); And gave them clear proofs in matters [by revealing to them the Taurat (Torah)]. And they differed not until after the knowledge came to them, through envy among themselves. Verily, Your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection about that wherein they used to differ.
Surah 45 Al-Jathiyah Verses 16-17
Or do those who earn evil deeds think that We shall hold them equal with those who believe and do righteous good deeds, in their present life and after their death? Worst is the judgement that they make.
Surah 45 Al-Jathiyah Verse 21
- Those given to evil doing naturally oppose the idea of recompense in the Hereafter. They do so because it puts restraint on their unbridled ways. However, Allah, Who is Wise and Just, cannot be expected to treat the upright and the wicked alike. In fact, in such an event one might even ascribe injustice to Allah. Allah therefore makes it absolutely clear that this is not the case and justice shall be done (and those who think otherwise are making gross error of judgement). Allah will certainly take into account how people spent their lives and how some abused the faculties granted to them. For the upright abide by the moral code, faithfully discharge their obligations, avoid unlawful gains and suffer losses on account of their commitment to truth and honesty. As opposed to this, the wicked gratify their base desires, refuse to serve Allah, usurp what belongs to others, and unlawfully appropriate for themselves all that they can. If these two groups have not been alike in their conduct in life, they should not be treated alike after death
And for all, there will be degrees according to that which they did, that He (Allah) may recompense them in full for their deeds. And they will not be wronged.
Surah 46 Al-Ahqaf Verse 19
- The levels of the Fire descend, and those of the Paradise ascend
Is he who is on a clear proof from His Lord, like those for whom their evil deeds that they do are beautified for them, while they follow their own lusts?
Surah 47 Muhammad Verse 14
And you (all) will be in three groups. So those on the Right Hand – how (fortunate) will be those on the Right Hand! And those on the Left Hand – how (unfortunate) will be those on the Left Hand! And the foremost ones will be foremost.
Surah 56 Al-Waqiah Verses 7-10
- This means that people will be divided into three categories on the Day of Resurrection:
- Those on the right of Allah’s Throne and they are those who were brought forth from Adam’s right side. They shall be given their Book of Records in their right hand. They will comprise majority of the residents of Paradise
- Those on the left of Allah’s Throne, and they are those who were brought forth from Adam’s left side. They shall be given their Book of Records in their left hand. They are the residents of Fire (Hell)
- Those who are foremost and nearest before Allah. They are in a better grade and status than those on the right side. They include Messengers, Prophets, true believers and martyrs (and also chiefs of those on the right side). They are residents of Al-Illiyyin (utmost highs) in Paradise.
- ‘foremost’ – The meaning of foremost is that they were foremost in performing the acts of righteousness, those who rush to obey Allah in this life
O you who believe! When you are told to make room in the assemblies, (spread out and) make room. Allah will give you (ample) room (from His Mercy). And when you are told to rise up (for prayers, Jihad (holy fighting in Allahs Cause), or for any other good deed), rise up. Allah will exalt in degree those of you who believe, and those who have been granted knowledge. And Allah is Well-Acquainted with what you do.
Surah 58 Al-Mujadilah Verse 11
- ‘knowledge’ – Narrated Umar: “Surely, your Prophet (pbuh) has said ‘Verily, Allah elevates some people and degrades others, on account of this Book’ (referring to the Quran and the knowledge it provides to people)”
