Volume II

Good Things

O you who believe! Spend of the good things which you have (legally) earned, and of that which We have produced from the earth for you, and do not aim at that which is bad to spend from it, (though) you would not accept it save if you close your eyes and tolerate therein. And know that Allah is Rich (Free of all needs), and Worthy of all praise. Shaitan (Satan) threatens you with poverty and orders you to commit Fahsha (evil deeds, sins); whereas Allah promises you Forgiveness from Himself and Bounty, and Allah is All- Sufficient for His creatures' needs, All- Knower.

Surah 2 Al-Baqarah Verses 267-268

Say (O Muhammad, pbuh): “Who has forbidden the adornment with clothes given by Allah, which He has produced for His slaves, and At-Tayyibat [all kinds of Halal (lawful) good things] of Sustenance (Rizq)?” Say: “They are, in the life of this world, for those who believe, (and) exclusively for them (believers) on the Day of Resurrection (the disbelievers will not share them)”. Thus, We explain the Ayat (Islamic laws) in detail for people who have knowledge.

Surah 7 Al-Araf Verse 32

And We divided them into twelve tribes (as distinct) nations. We revealed to Musa (Moses) when his people asked him for water (saying): “Strike the stone with your stick”, and there gushed forth out of it twelve springs, each group knew its own place for water. We shaded them with the clouds and sent down upon them Al-Manna and the quails (saying): “Eat of the good things with which We have provided you”. They harmed Us not but they used to harm themselves.

Surah 7 Al-Araf Verse 160

And remember when you were few and were reckoned weak in the land, and were afraid that men might kidnap you, but He provided a safe place for you, strengthened you with His Help, and provided you with good things so that you might be grateful.

Surah 8 Al-Anfal Verse 26

But the Messenger (Muhammad, pbuh) and those who believed with him (in Islamic Monotheism) strove hard and fought with their wealth and their lives (in Allah's Cause). Such are they for whom are the good things, and it is they who will be successful. For them Allah has got ready Gardens (Paradise) under which rivers flow, to dwell therein forever. That is the supreme success.

Surah 9 At-Taubah Verses 88-89

And indeed, We settled the Children of Israel in an honourable dwelling place (Sham and Misr), and provided them with good things, and they differed not until the knowledge came to them. Verily, Allah will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection in that in which they used to differ.

Surah 10 Yunus Verse 93

If only there had been among the generations before you persons having wisdom, prohibiting (others) from Al-Fasad (disbelief, polytheism, and all kinds of crimes and sins) in the earth, (but there were none) - except a few of those whom We saved from among them! Those who did wrong pursued the enjoyment of good things of (this worldly) life, and were Mujrimun (criminals, disbelievers in Allah, polytheists, sinners).

Surah 11 Hud Verse 116

And whatever of blessings and good things you have, it is from Allah. Then, when harm touches you, unto Him you cry aloud for help. Then, when He has removed the harm from you, behold! some of you associate others in worship with their Lord (Allah). So (as a result of that) they deny (with ungratefulness) that (Allah's Favours) which We have bestowed on them! Then enjoy yourselves (your short stay), but you will come to know (with regrets).

Surah 16 An-Nahl Verses 53-55

And indeed, We have honoured the Children of Adam, and We have carried them on land and sea, and have provided them with At-Tayyibat (lawful good things), and have preferred them above many of those whom We have created with a marked preferment.

Surah 17 Al-Isra Verse 70

Do they think that in wealth and children with which We enlarge them; We hasten unto them with good things. Nay, [it is a Fitnah (trial) in this worldly life so that they will have no share of good things in the Hereafter] but they perceive not.

Surah 23 Al-Muminun Verses 55-56

Allah, it is He Who has made for you the earth as a dwelling place and the sky as a canopy, and has given you shape and made your shapes good (looking) and has provided you with good things. That is Allah, your Lord: so Blessed be Allah, the Lord of the Alamin (mankind, jinn and all that exists).

Surah 40 Ghafir Verse 64

And indeed, We gave the Children of Israel the Scripture, and the understanding of the Scripture and its laws, and the Prophethood; and provided them with good things, and preferred them above the Alamin (mankind and jinn of their time, during that period).

Surah 45 Al-Jathiyah Verse 16

On the Day when those who disbelieve (in the Oneness of Allah - Islamic Monotheism) will be exposed to the Fire (it will be said): “You received your good things in the life of the world, and you took your pleasure therein. Now this Day you shall be recompensed with a torment of humiliation, because you were arrogant in the land without a right, and because you used to rebel against Allah's Command (disobey Allah)”.

Surah 46 Al-Ahqaf Verse 20

And leave Me Alone to deal with the beliers (those who deny My Verses), those who are in possession of good things of life. And give them respite for a little while. Verily, with Us are fetters (to bind them), and a raging Fire. And a food that chokes, and a painful torment. On the Day when the earth and the mountains will be in violent shake, and the mountains will be a heap of sand poured out.

Surah 73 Al-Muzzammil Verse 11-14

We see that various terms in the Quran have been used (in Arabic) that have been translated as ‘Good things’ by the translators:

  1. Tayyibaat (V 8:26,10:93, 17:70, 40:64, 45:16 and 46:20)
  2. Tayyibaat – ma – qarabtum (V 2:267)
  3. Tayyibaat – min – rizq (V 7:32, V 7:160)
  4. Nemat (V 16:53, 73:11)
  5. Khair (atu) (V 9:88, 23:56)
  6. Utrifu (V 11:116)

Let us try to understand what has been said about the ‘Good things’

Understanding ‘Good Things’

Sl No Verse What has been said about ‘Good Things’
1 2:267
  1. Good things are those which are legally earned or which is provided by Allah as a produce from the land
  2. Ibn Abbas said, ‘Allah commanded them to spend from the purest, finest and best types of their money and prohibited spending from evil and dishonest money, because Allah is pure and good and only accepts that which is pure and good’. Spending has to be from the good things.
2 7:32
  1. Good things of sustenance and adornments are for the believers (justified by their servility and fidelity to Allah) as well as for the disbelievers (as a mercy from Allah, general to all mankind and a trial); but they are for believers alone in the Hereafter.
  2. The term sustenance (Rizq) has a linguistic sense of, ‘giving’ or ‘apportionment’. However, it is used in different specific ways in the primary texts of the Quran and the Traditions (hadith) of the Holy Prophet (pbuh). It sometimes refers to:

    1. the general worldly or next-worldly giving of blessings and the like. Allah Most High says, “[those] who believe in the unseen, keep up the prayer, and give out of what We have provided for them.” [Verse 2:3] i.e., that which Allah has given them and blessed them with.

    2. that which nourishes us - and by extension generally that which one wears or uses. The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said, ‘If you were to rely on Allah as He should be relied on, He would provide for you as He provides for the birds. They go out in the morning hungry and return in the evening full’.
    3. a great good that has been granted to it’s possessor. Allah Most High says, “Give out of what We have provided for you, before death comes to one of you…” [Verse 63:10] i.e., from wealth, knowledge, and prestige.

2 7:160, 10:93, 17:70, 40:64, 45:16 Good things are those which Allah provides for us
3 8:26 Settlement, refuge and support for which one is thankful – are good things
4 9:88 For those who believe, and strive hard with their wealth and lives in the cause of Allah, are the good things
5 11:116

Those who ‘pursued’ the good things of this life did wrong and became Mujrimun (criminals, disbelievers, sinners).

(It is interesting to note that when Allah provides, it is a good thing; and if mankind ‘pursues’ the good things, it leads to error)

6 16:53

Good things are also related to blessings (Nemat); and both come from Allah.

(This may mean that the things which are considered good need to be blessed as such, so that they provide with enrichment which is healthy and brings us closer to Allah; the concept of Barkah, Aafiyah, and tawakkul are relevant)

7 17:70, 40:64 Good things which are lawful have been provided by Allah to mankind, as a general bounty from Himself
8 23:55 Wealth and children are perceived to be the good things (of this life); but when enlarged it may be a trial and in that case, it ceases to be a good thing, rather it becomes a cause for destruction in the Hereafter
9 46:20

Taking pleasures in the good things leads to torment of humiliation (in the Hereafter); Taking pleasure refers to:

  1. Showing arrogance in the land (for the good things provided by Allah) without right (because you are not the one responsible for the things you got, rather Allah bestowed it on you as a mercy and as a trial); and
  2. Rebellion against Allah’s Command (the disobedience to the directives of Allah with respect to the things provided – in how to earn and where to spend – and other aspects of faith – belief in Islamic Monotheism)
10 73:11 Those who are in possession of the good things of life (implying people who have it in excess or huge amounts) are many times foremost in denying the truth. With a little enquiry, it can be seen that in every age all those who opposed the Messengers of Allah and His message had three common characteristics: (1) They were the chiefs of their people. (2) They denied life in the Hereafter. (3) They were prosperous in the worldly life.
