Volume II

Zalimun — as defined in the Quran

And We said: “O Adam! Dwell you and your wife in Paradise and eat both of you freely with pleasure and delight, of things therein as wherever you will, but come not near this tree or you both will be of the Zalimun”.

Surah 2 Al-Baqarah Verse 35

And (remember) when We appointed for Musa (Moses) forty nights, and (in his absence) you took the calf (for worship), and you were Zalimun…And indeed Musa came to you with clear proofs, yet you worshipped the calf after he left, and you were Zalimun.

Surah 2 Al-Baqarah Verse 51/92

Say to (them): “If the home of the Hereafter with Allah is indeed for you specially and not for others, of mankind, then long for death if you are truthful”. But they will never long for it because of what their hands have sent before them (i.e., what they have done). And Allah is All-Knower of the Zalimun.

Surah 2 Al-Baqarah Verses 94-95

And (remember) when the Lord of Ibrahim (Abraham) tried him with (certain) Commands, which he fulfilled. He (Allah) said (to him), “Verily, I am going to make you an Imam (a leader) for mankind (to follow)”. [Ibrahim] said, “And of my offspring (to make leaders)”. (Allah) said, “My Covenant (Prophethood) includes not Zalimun (polytheists and wrong doers)”.

Surah 2 Al-Baqarah Verse 124

And even if you were to bring to the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) all the Ayat (proofs, evidences, signs) they would not follow your Qiblah (prayer direction), nor are you going to follow their Qiblah. And they will not follow each other’s Qiblah. Verily, if you follow their desires after that which you have received of knowledge (from Allah), then indeed you will be one of the Zalimun.

Surah 2 Al-Baqarah Verse 145

And fight them until there is no more Fitnah (disbelief and worshipping of others along with Allah) and (all and every kind of) worship is for Allah (Alone). But if they cease, let there be no transgression except against Az-Zalimun.

Surah 2 Al-Baqarah Verse 193

The divorce is twice, after that either you retain her on reasonable terms or release her with kindness. And it is not lawful for you (men) to take back (from your wives) any of your Mahr (bridal-money given by husband to his wife at the time of marriage) which you have given them, except when both parties fear that they would be unable to keep the limits ordained by Allah (e.g., to deal with each other on a fair basis). Then if you fear that they would not be able to keep the limits ordained by Allah, then there is no sin on either of them if she gives back (the Mahr or a part of it) for her Al-Khul (parting of a wife from her husband). These are the limits ordained by Allah, so do not transgress them. And whoever transgresses the limits ordained by Allah, then such are the Zalimun.

Surah 2 Al-Baqarah Verse 229

Have you not thought about the group of the Children of Israel after (the time of) Musa (Moses)? When they said to a Prophet of theirs, “Appoint for us a king and we will fight in Allah’s way”. He said, “Would you then refrain from fighting, if fighting was prescribed for you?” They said, “Why should we not fight in Allah’s way while we have been driven out of our homes and our children (families have been taken as captives)?” But when fighting was ordered for them, they turned away, all except a few of them. And Allah is All-Knower of the Zalimun.

Surah 2 Al-Baqarah Verse 246

O you who believe! Spend of that which We have provided for you, before a Day comes when there will be no bargaining, nor friendship, nor intercession. And it is the disbelievers who are the Zalimun.

Surah 2 Al-Baqarah Verse 254

Have you not looked at him who disputed with Ibrahim (Abraham) about his Lord (Allah), because Allah had given him the kingdom? When Ibrahim said (to him): “My Lord (Allah) is He Who gives life and causes death”. He said, “I give life and cause death”. Ibrahim said, “Verily, Allah brings the sun from the east; then bring it you from the west”. So, the disbeliever was utterly defeated. And Allah guides not the people, who are Zalimun.

Surah 2 Al-Baqarah Verse 258

And whatever you spend for spendings or whatever vow you make, be sure Allah knows it all. And for the Zalimun there are no helpers.

Surah 2 Al-Baqarah Verse 270

And as for those who believe (in the Oneness of Allah) and do righteous good deeds, Allah will pay them their reward in full. And Allah does not like the Zalimun.

Surah 3 Al-Imran Verse 57

How shall Allah guide a people who disbelieved after their belief and after they bore witness that the Messenger (Muhammad, pbuh) is true and after clear proofs had come to them? And Allah guides not the people who are Zalimun.

Surah 3 Al-Imran Verse 86

All food was lawful to the Children of Israel, except what Israel made unlawful for himself before the Taurat (Torah) was revealed. Say (O Muhammad, pbuh): “Bring here the Taurat and recite it, if you are truthful”. Then after that, whosoever shall invent a lie against Allah, such shall indeed be the Zalimun.

Surah 3 Al-Imran Verse 94

That He might cut off a part of those who disbelieve, or expose them to infamy, so that they retire frustrated. Not for you (O Muhammad, pbuh, but for Allah) is the decision; whether He turns in mercy to (pardon) them or punishes them; verily, they are the Zalimun.

Surah 3 Al-Imran Verses 127-128

So, do not become weak (against your enemy), nor be sad, and you will be superior (in victory) if you are indeed (true) believers. If a wound (or killing) has touched you, be assured a similar wound (or killing) has touched the others (disbelievers). And so are the days (good and not so good), that We give to men by turns, that Allah may test those who believe, and that He may take martyrs from among you. And Allah likes not the Zalimun.

Surah 3 Al-Imran Verses 139-140

We shall cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve, because they joined others in worship with Allah, for which He had sent no authority; their abode will be the Fire and how evil is the abode of the Zalimun.

Surah 3 Al-Imran Verse 151

Those who remember Allah standing, sitting, and lying down on their sides, and think deeply about the creation of the heavens and the earth, (saying): “Our Lord! You have not created (all) this without purpose, glory to You! Give us salvation from the torment of the Fire. Our Lord! Verily, whom You admit to the Fire, indeed, You have disgraced him; and never will the Zalimun find any helpers”.

Surah 3 Al-Imran Verses 191-192

And (O Muhammad, pbuh) recite to them the story of the two sons of Adam (Habil and Qabil – Abel and Cain) in truth; when each offered a sacrifice (to Allah), it was accepted from the one but not from the other. The latter said to the former: “I will surely, kill you”. The former said: “Verily, Allah accepts only from those who are Al-Muttaqun (the pious). If you do stretch your hand against me to kill me, I shall never stretch my hand against you to kill you: for I fear Allah, the Lord of the Alamin (mankind, jinn and all that exists). Verily, I intend to let you draw my sin on yourself as well as yours, then you will be one of the dwellers of the Fire; and that is the recompense of the Zalimun”.

Surah 5 Al-Maidah Verses 27-29

Say (to the disbelievers): “Tell me, if Allah took away your hearing and your sight, and sealed up your hearts, who is there who could restore them to you?” See how variously We explain the Ayat (proofs, evidences, signs), yet they turn aside. Say: “Tell me, if the punishment of Allah comes to you suddenly (during the night), or openly (during the day), will any be destroyed except the Zalimun people?”

Surah 6 Al-Anam Verses 46-47

And warn therewith (the Quran) those who fear that they will be gathered before their Lord, when there will be neither a protector nor an intercessor for them besides Him, so that they may fear Allah and keep their duty to Him. And turn not away those who invoke their Lord, morning and afternoon seeking His Face. You are not accountable for them in anything, and they are not accountable for you in anything, that you may turn them away, and thus become of the Zalimun.

Surah 6 Al-Anam Verses 51-52

Say (O Muhammad, pbuh): “I am on clear proof from my Lord (Islamic Monotheism), but you deny it (the truth that has come to me from Allah). I have not gotten what you are asking for impatiently (the torment). The decision is only for Allah, He declares the truth, and He is the Best of judges”. Say: “If I had that which you are asking for impatiently, the matter would have been settled at once between me and you, but Allah knows best the Zalimun”.

Surah 6 Al-Anam Verses 57-58

And when you (O Muhammad, pbuh) see those who engage in a false conversation about Our Verses (of the Quran) by mocking at them, stay away from them till they turn to another topic. And if Shaitan (Satan) causes you to forget, then after the remembrance sit not you in the company of those people who are the Zalimun.

Surah 6 Al-Anam Verse 68

It is those who believe (in the Oneness of Allah and worship none but Him Alone) and confuse not their Belief with Zulm (wrong, i.e., by worshipping others besides Allah), for them (only) there is security and they are the guided.

Surah 6 Al-Anam Verse 82

And who can be more unjust than he who invents a lie against Allah, or says: “A revelation has come to me” whereas no revelation has come to him in anything; and who says, “I will reveal the like of what Allah has revealed”. And if you could but see when the Zalimun are in the agonies of death, while the angels are stretching forth their hands (saying): “Deliver your souls! This day you shall be recompensed with the torment of degradation because of what you used to utter against Allah other than the truth. And you used to reject His Ayat (proofs, evidences, signs) with disrespect!”

Surah 6 Al-Anam Verse 93

And on the Day when He will gather them (all) together (and say): “O you assembly of jinn! Many did you mislead of men”, and their Auliya (friend and helpers) amongst men will say: “Our Lord! We benefitted one from the other, but now we have reached our appointed term which You did appoint for us”. He will say: “The Fire will be your dwelling place, you will dwell therein forever, except as Allah may will. Certainly, your Lord is All-Wise, All-Knowing”. And thus, We do make the Zalimun Auliya of one another, because of what they used to earn. O you assembly of jinn and mankind! “Did not there come to you Messengers from amongst you, reciting to you My verses and warning you of the Meeting of this Day of yours?” They will say: “We bear witness against ourselves”. It was the life of this world that deceived them. And they will bear witness against themselves that they were disbelievers.

Surah 6 Al-Anam Verses 128-130

Say (O Muhammad, pbuh): “O my people! Work according to your way, surely, I too am working (in my way), and you will come to know for which of us will be the (happy) end in the Hereafter. Certainly, the Zalimun will not be successful”.

Surah 6 Al-Anam Verse 135

And of the cattle (are some) for burden (like camel) and (some are) small (unable to carry burden like sheep and goats for food, meat, milk and wool). Eat of what Allah has provided for you, and follow not the footsteps of Shaitan (Satan). Surely, he is to you an open enemy. Eight pairs: of the sheep two (male and female), and of the goats two (male and female). Say: “Has He forbidden the two males or the two females, or (the young) which the wombs of the two females enclose? Inform me with knowledge if you are truthful”. And of the camels two (male and female), and of oxen two (male and female). Say: “Has He forbidden the two males or the two females or (the young) which the wombs of the two females enclose? Or were you present when Allah ordered you such a thing? Then who does more wrong than one who invents a lie against Allah, to lead mankind astray without knowledge. Certainly, Allah guides not the people who are Zalimun”.

Surah 6 Al-Anam Verses 142-144

And a great number of towns (their population) We destroyed. Our torment came upon them (suddenly) by night or while they were taking their midday nap. No cry did they utter when Our torment came upon them but this: “Verily, we were Zalimun”.

Surah 7 Al-Araf Verses 4-5

Verily, those who deny Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, signs) and treat them with arrogance, for them the gates of heaven will not be opened, and they will not enter Paradise until the camel (or thick rope) goes through the eye of the needle (which is impossible). Thus, do We recompense the Mujrimun (criminals, polytheists, sinners). Theirs will be a bed of Hell (Fire), and over them coverings (of Hell-fire). Thus, do We recompense the Zalimun.

Surah 7 Al-Araf Verses 40-41

And the dwellers of Paradise will call out to the dwellers of the Fire (saying): “We have indeed found true what our Lord had promised us; have you also found true what your Lord promised (warned)?” they shall say: “Yes”. Then a crier will proclaim between them: “The Curse of Allah is on the Zalimun”. Those who hindered (men) from the path of Allah, and would seek to make it crooked, and they were disbelievers in the Hereafter.

Surah 7 Al-Araf Verses 44-45

Similar to the behavior of the people of Firaun (Pharaoh), and those before them. They denied the Ayat (proofs, evidences, signs) of their Lord, so We destroyed them for their sins, and We drowned the people of Firaun for they were all Zalimun.

Surah 8 Al-Anfal Verse 54

O you who believe! Take not as Auliya (supporters and helpers) your fathers and your brothers if they prefer disbelief to belief. And whoever of you does so, then he is one of the Zalimun.

Surah 9 At-Taubah Verse 23

And as for those who put up a mosque by way of harm and disbelief and to disunite the believers and as an outpost for those who warred against Allah and His Messenger (Muhammad, pbuh) aforetime, they will indeed swear that their intention is nothing but good. Allah bears witness that they are certainly liars. Never stand you therein. Verily, the mosque whose foundation was laid from the first day on piety is more worthy that you stand therein (to pray). In it are men who love to clean and to purify themselves. And Allah loves those who make themselves clean and pure. Is it then he who laid the foundation of his building on piety to Allah and His Good Pleasure better, or he who laid the foundation of his building on the brink of an undetermined precipice ready to crumble down, so that it crumbled to pieces with him into the fire of Hell. And Allah guides not the Zalimun.

Surah 9 At-Taubah Verses 107-109

And this Quran is not such as could ever be produced by other than Allah, but it is a confirmation of (the revelation) which was before it, and a full explanation of the Book (i.e., the laws decreed for mankind) – wherein there is no doubt – from the Lord of the Alamin (mankind, jinn, and all that exists). Or do they say: “He (Muhammad, pbuh) has forged it?” Say: “Bring then a Surah (chapter) like it, and call upon whomsoever you can besides Allah, if you are truthful!” Nay, they have denied the knowledge whereof they could not comprehend and what has not yet been fulfilled (i.e., their punishment). Thus, those before them did deny. Then see what was the end of the Zalimun.

Surah 10 Yunus Verses 37-39

Say (O Muhammad, pbuh): “O you mankind! If you are in doubt as to my religion (Islam), then (know that) I will never worship those whom you worship besides Allah. But I worship Allah Who causes you to die, and I am commanded to be one of the believers. And (it is revealed to me): Direct your face entirely towards the religion Hanif (Islamic Monotheism), and never be one of the Mushrikun (those who ascribe partners to Allah). And invoke not besides Allah any such that will neither profit you nor harm you, but if (in case) you did so, you shall certainly be one of the Zalimun”.

Surah 10 Yunus Verses 104-106

And who does more wrong than he who invents a lie against Allah. Such will be brought before their Lord, and the witnesses will say, “These are the ones who lied against their Lord!” No doubt! The Curse of Allah is on the Zalimun. Those who hinder (others) from the Path of Allah (Islamic Monotheism), and seek a crookedness therein, while they are disbelievers in the Hereafter. By no means will they escape (from Allah’s Torment) on earth, nor have they protectors besides Allah! Their torment will be doubled! They could not bear to hear (the preachers of the truth) and they used not to see (the truth because of their severe aversion, in spite of the fact that they had the sense of hearing and sight).

Surah 11 Hud Verse 18-20

He [Nuh (Noah)] said: “O my people! Tell me, if I have a clear proof from my Lord, and a mercy (Prophet Hood) has come to me from Him, but that (mercy) has been obscured from your sight. Shall we compel you to accept it (Islamic Monotheism) when you have a strong hatred for it? And O my people! I ask of you no wealth for it; my reward is from none but Allah. I am not going to drive away those who have believed. Surely, they are going to meet their Lord, but I see that you are a people that are ignorant. And O my people! Who will help me against Allah, if I drove them away? Will you not then give a thought? And I do not say to you that with me are the treasures of Allah, nor that I know the Ghaib (Unseen); nor do I say I am an angel, and I do not say of those whom your eyes look down upon that Allah will not bestow any good on them. Allah knows what is in their inner selves (as regards belief). In that case, I should, indeed be one of the Zalimun”.

Surah 11 Hud Verses 28-31

And it was said: “O earth! Swallow up your water, and O sky! Withhold (your rain)”. And the water was made to subside and the Decree (of Allah) was fulfilled (the destruction of people of Noah). And it (the ship) rested on (Mount) Judi, and it was said: “Away with the people who are Zalimun!”

Surah 11 Hud Verse 44

They said: “O ruler of the land! Verily, he has an old father (who will grieve for him); so, take one of us in his place. Indeed, we think that you are one of the Muhsinun (good-doers). He said: “Allah forbid, that we should take anyone but him with whom we found our property. Indeed (if we did so) we should be Zalimun”.

Surah 12 Yusuf Verse 78-79

And Shaitan (Satan) will say when the matter has been decided: “Verily, Allah promised you a promise of truth. And I too promised you, but I betrayed you. I had no authority over you except that I called you, and you responded to me. So, blame me not, but blame yourselves. I cannot help you, nor can you help me. I deny your former act in associating me (Satan) as a partner with Allah (by obeying me in the life of the world). Verily, there is a painful torment for the Zalimun”.

Surah 14 Ibrahim Verse 22

Allah will keep firm those who believe, with the word that stands firm in this world, and in the Hereafter. And Allah will cause to go astray those who are Zalimun, and Allah does what He wills.

Surah 14 Ibrahim Verse 27

Consider not that Allah is unaware of that which the Zalimun do, but He gives them respite up to a Day when the eyes will stare in horror. (They will be) hastening forward with necks outstretched, their heads raised up (towards the sky), their gaze returning not towards them and their hearts empty (from thinking because of extreme fear). And warn (O Muhammad, pbuh) mankind of the Day when the torment will come to them; then the Zalim will say: “Our Lord! Respite us for a little while, we will answer Your Call and follow the Messengers!” (It will be said): “Had you not sworn aforetime that you would not leave (the world for the Hereafter). And you dwelt in the dwellings of men who wronged themselves, and it was clear to you how We had dealt with them. And We put forth (many) parables for you”.

Surah 14 Ibrahim Verses 42-45

And the Dwellers of the Wood (the people of Madyan to whom Prophet Shuaib was sent by Allah), were also Zalimun. So, We took vengeance on them. They are both (people of Madyan and Sodom) on an open highway, plain to see.

Surah 15 Al-Hijr Verses 78-79

And Allah puts forward the example of a township (Makkah) that dwelt secure and well-content; its provisions coming to it in abundance from every place, but it (its people) denied the Favors of Allah (with ungratefulness). So, Allah made it taste extreme of hunger (famine) and fear, because of that (evil i.e., denying Prophet Muhammad, pbuh) which they (its people) used to do. And verily, there had come to them a Messenger (Muhammad, pbuh) from among themselves, but they denied him, so the torment overtook them while they were Zalimun.

Surah 16 An-Nahl Verses 112-113

And We have put coverings over their hearts lest they should understand it (the Quran), and in their ears deafness. And when you make mention of your Lord Alone in the Quran, they turn on their backs, fleeing in extreme dislike. We know best of what they listen to, when they listen to you. And when they take secret counsel, then the Zalimun say: “You follow none but a bewitched man”.

Surah 17 Al-Isra Verses 46-47

That is their recompense, because they denied Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, signs) and said: “When we are bones and fragments, shall we really be raised up as a new creation?” See they not that Allah, Who created the heavens and the earth, is Able to create the like of them. And He has decreed for them an appointed term, whereof there is no doubt. But the Zalimun refuse (the truth – and accept nothing) but disbelief.

Surah 17 Al-Isra Verses 98-99

And keep yourself (O Muhammad, pbuh) patiently with those who call on their Lord morning and afternoon, seeking His Face; and let not your eyes overlook them, desiring the pomp and glitter of the life of the world; and obey not him whose heart We have made heedless of Our remembrance, and who follows his own lusts, and whose affair (deeds) has been lost. And say: “The truth is from your Lord”. Then whosoever wills let him believe; and whosoever wills, let him disbelieve. Verily, We have prepared for the Zalimun, a Fire whose walls will be surrounding them. And if they ask for help (relief, water), they will be granted water like boiling oil, that will scald their faces. Terrible is the drink, and an evil Murtafaq (dwelling, resting place)!

Surah 18 Al-Kahf Verses 28-29

And (remember) when We said to the angels: “Prostrate yourselves to Adam” So they prostrated themselves except Iblis (Satan). He was one of the jinn; he disobeyed the command of his Lord. Will you then take him and his offspring as Auliya (protectors and helpers) rather than Me while they are enemies to you? What an evil is the exchange for the Zalimun.

Surah 18 AL-Kahf Verse 50

How clearly will they (disbelievers in the oneness of Allah) see and hear, the Day when they will appear before Us! But the Zalimun today are in plain error. And warn them (O Muhammad, pbuh) of the Day of grief and regrets, when the case has been decided, while (now) they are in a state of carelessness, and they believe not.

Surah 19 Maryam Verses 38-39

And man (disbeliever) says: “When I am dead, shall I then be raised up alive?” Does not man remember that We created him before, while he was nothing? So, by your Lord, surely, We shall gather them together, and (also) the Shayatin [(devils) with them], then We shall bring them round Hell on their knees. Then indeed We shall drag out from every sect all those who were worst in obstinate rebellion against the Most Gracious (Allah). Then, verily, We know best those who are most worthy of being burnt therein. There is not one of you but will pass over it (Hell); this is with your Lord, a Decree which must be accomplished. Then We shall save those who use to fear Allah and were dutiful to Him. And We shall leave the Zalimun therein (humbled) to their knees (in Hell).

Surah 19 Maryam Verses 66-72

How many a town (community) given to wrongdoing, have We destroyed, and raised up after them another people! Then, when they perceived (saw) Our torment (coming), behold, they (tried to) flee from it. Flee not, but return to that wherein you lived a luxurious life, and to your homes, in order that you may be questioned. They cried: “Woe to us! Certainly, we have been Zalimun”.

Surah 21 Al-Anbiya Verses 11-14

Never did We send a Messenger or a Prophet before you but when he did recite the Revelation or narrated or spoke, Shaitan (Satan) threw (some falsehood) in it. But Allah abolishes that which Shaitan throws in. Then Allah establishes His Revelations. And Allah is All-Knower, All-Wise: That He (Allah) may make what is thrown in by Shaitan a trial for those in whose hearts is a disease (of hypocrisy and disbelief) and whose hearts are hardened. And certainly, the Zalimun are in an opposition far-off (from the truth, against Allah’s Messenger and the believers).

Surah 22 Al-Hajj Verses 52-53

And they worship besides Allah others for which He has sent down no authority, and of which they have no knowledge; and for the Zalimun there is no helper. And when Our Clear Verses are recited to them, you will notice a denial on the faces of the disbelievers! They are nearly ready to attack with violence those who recite Our Verses to them. Say: “Shall I tell you of something worse than that? The Fire (of Hell) which Allah has promised to those who disbelieved, and worst indeed is that destination!”

Surah 22 Al-Hajj Verses 71-72

And when you (Noah) have embarked on the ship, you and whoever is with you, then say: “All praise and thanks are Allah’s, Who has saved us from the people who are Zalimun”.

Surah 23 Al-Muminun Verse 28

So, As-Saihah (torment – awful cry) overtook them (the generation after Noah) in truth (with justice), and We made them as rubbish of dead plants. So, away with the people who are Zalimun.

Surah 23 Al-Muminun Verse 41

Then, when the trumpet is blown, there will be no kinship among them that Day, nor will they ask of one another. Then, whose Scales (of good deeds) are heavy, these! They are the successful. And those whose Scales (of good deeds) are light, they are those who lose their own selves, in Hell will they abide. The Fire will burn their faces, and therein they will grin with displaced lips (disfigured). “Were not My Verses (this Quran) recited to you, and then you used to deny?”, they will say: “Our Lord! Our wretchedness overcame us, and we were (an) erring people. Our Lord! Bring us out of this. If ever we return (to evil), then indeed we shall be Zalimun”. He (Allah) will say: “Remain you in it with ignominy! And speak you not to Me!”

Surah 23 Al-Muminun Verse 101-107

And when they (hypocrites) are called to Allah (i.e., His Words, the Quran) and His Messenger (Muhammad, pbuh), to judge between them, lo! A party of them refuses (to come) and turns away. But if the truth is on their side, they come to him willingly with submission. Is there a disease in their hearts? Or do they doubt or fear lest Allah and His Messenger should wrong them in judgement. Nay, it is they themselves who are the Zalimun. The only saying of the faithful believers, when they are called to Allah and His Messenger, to judge between them, is that they say: “We hear and we obey”. And such are the successful.

Surah 24 An-Nur Verses 48-51

And they (those who disbelieve) say: “Why does this Messenger (Muhammad, pbuh) eat food, and walk about in the markets (as we). Why is not an angel sent down to him to be a warner with him? Or (why) has not a treasure been granted to him, or why has he not a garden whereof he may eat?” And the Zalimun say: “You follow none but a man bewitched”. See how they coin similitudes for you, so they have gone astray, and they cannot find a (Right) Path.

Surah 25 Al-Furqan Verses 7-9

And (remember) the Day when the Zalim will bite at his hands, he will say: “Oh! Would that I had taken a path with the Messenger (Muhammad, pbuh). Ah! Woe to me! Would that I had never taken so-and-so as a khalil (an intimate friend)! He indeed led me astray from the Reminder (this Quran) after it had come to me. And Shaitan (Satan) is to man ever a deserter in the hour of need”.

Surah 25 Al-Furqan Verses 27-29

And Nuh’s (Noah’s) people, when they denied the Messengers, We drowned them, and We made them as a sign for mankind. And We have prepared a painful torment for the Zalimun. And (also) Ad and Thamud, and the dwellers of Ar-Rass, and many generations in between. And for each (of them) We put forward examples (as proofs and lessons), and each We brought to utter ruin.

Surah 25 Al-Furqan Verses 37-39

And (remember) when your Lord called Musa (Moses) (saying): “Go to the people who are Zalimun – The people of Firaun (Pharaoh). Will they not fear Allah and become righteous?”

Surah 26 Ash-Shuara Verses 10-11

Firaun (Pharaoh) said: “O chiefs! I know not that you have an ilah (a god) other than me. So, kindle for me (a fire), O Haman, to bake (bricks out of) clay, and set up for me a Sarhan (a lofty tower, or palace) in order that I may look at (or look for) the Ilah (Allah) of Musa; and verily, I think that he (Musa) is one of the liars”. And he and his hosts were arrogant in the land, without right, and they thought that they would never return to Us. So, We seized him and his hosts, and We threw them all into the sea (and drowned them). So, behold (O Muhammad, pbuh) what was the end of the Zalimun. And We made them leaders inviting to the Fire; and on the Day of Resurrection, they will not be helped. And We made a curse to follow them in this world, and on the Day of Resurrection, they will be among Al-Maqbuhun (those who are prevented from receiving Allah’s Mercy or any good; despised or destroyed).

Surah 28 Al-Qasas Verses 38-42

And how many a town (population) have We destroyed, which was thankless for its means of livelihood (disobeyed Allah, and His Messengers, by doing evil deeds)! And those are their dwellings, which have not been inhabited after them except a little. And verily, We have been the inheritor. And never will your Lord destroy the towns (populations) until He sends to their mother town a Messenger reciting to them Our Verses. And never would We destroy the towns unless the people thereof are Zalimun.

Surah 28 Al-Qasas Verses 58-59

And indeed, We sent Nuh (Noah) to his people, and he stayed among them a thousand years less fifty years [inviting them to believe in the Oneness of Allah (Islamic Monotheism), and discard the false gods and other deities]; so the Deluge overtook them while they were Zalimun.

Surah 29 Al-Ankabut Verses 14

And (remember) Lut (Lot) when he said to his people: “You commit Al-Fahishah (Sodomy – the worst sin) which none has preceded you in (committing) it in the Alamin (mankind and jinn and all that exists). Verily, you practice sodomy with men, and rob the wayfarer (travelers)! And practice Al-Munkar (disbelief and polytheism and every kind of evil wicked deed) in your meetings”. But his people gave no answer except that they said: “Bring Allah’s torment upon us if you are one of the truthful”. He said: “My Lord! Give me victory over the people who are Mufsidun (those who commit great crimes and sins, oppressors, tyrants, mischief-makers, corrupters). And when Our messengers came to Ibrahim (Abraham) with the glad tidings they said: “Verily, we are going to destroy the people of this town (i.e., the town of Sodom in Palestine); truly its people have been Zalimun”.

Surah 29 Al-Ankabut Verses 28-31

Nay, but they, the clear Ayat [the description and the qualities of Prophet Muhammad, pbuh, written in the Taurat (Torah) and the Injil (Gospel)] are preserved in the breasts of those who have been given knowledge (among the people of the Scriptures). And none but the Zalimun deny Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, signs).

Surah 29 Al-Ankabut Verse 49

He (Allah) has created the heavens without any pillars that you see, and has set on the earth firm mountains lest it should shake with you. And He has scattered therein moving (living) creatures of all kinds. And We send down water (rain) from the sky, and We cause (plants) of every goodly kind to grow therein. This is the creation of Allah. So, show Me that which those (whom you worship) besides Him have created. Nay, the Zalimun are in plain error.

Surah 31 Luqman Verses 10-11

And (remember) when Luqman said to his son when he was advising him: “O my son! Join not in worship others with Allah. Verily, joining others in worship with Allah is a great Zulm indeed”.

Surah 31 Luqman Verse 13

But those who disbelieve (in the Oneness of Allah – Islamic Monotheism), for them will be the Fire of Hell. Neither will it have a complete killing effect on them so that they die nor shall its torment be lightened for them. Thus, do We requite every disbeliever! Therein they will cry: “Our Lord! Bring us out, we shall do righteous good deeds, not (the evil deeds) that we used to do”. (Allah will reply :) “Did We not give you lives long enough, so that whosoever would receive admonition could receive it? And the warner came to you. So, taste you (the evil of your deeds). For the Zalimun there is no helper”.

Surah 35 Fatir Verses 36-37

Say (O Muhammad, pbuh): “Tell me (or inform Me) (what) you think about your (so-called) partner-gods to whom you call upon besides Allah? Show me, what they have created of the earth. Or have they any share in the heavens? Or have We given them a Book, so that they act on clear proof there from? Nay, the Zalimun promise one another nothing but delusions”.

Surah 35 Fatir Verse 40

Is he whose breast Allah has opened to Islam, so that he is in light from his Lord (as he who is a non-Muslim)? So, woe to those whose hearts are hardened against remembrance of Allah! They are in plain error! Allah has sent down the Best Statement, a Book (this Quran), its parts resembling each other, oft-repeated. The skins of those who fear their Lord shiver from it (when they recite it or hear it). Then their skin and their hearts soften to the remembrance of Allah. That is the Guidance of Allah. He guides there with whom He wills; and whoever Allah sends astray, for him there is no guide. Is he then, who will confront with his face the awful torment on the Day of Resurrection (as he who enters peacefully in Paradise)? And it will be said to the Zalimun: “Taste what you used to earn!”

Surah 39 Az-Zumar Verses 22-24

And thus, We have revealed to you (O Muhammad, pbuh) a Quran in Arabic that you may warn the Mother of the Towns (Makkah) and all around it, and warn (them) of the Day of Assembling of which there is no doubt, when a party will be in Paradise and a party in blazing Fire (Hell). And if Allah had willed, He could have made them one nation, but He admits whom He wills to His Mercy. And the Zalimun will have neither a Wali (protector or guardian) nor a helper.

Surah 42 Ash-Shura Verses 7-8

The recompense for an evil is an evil like thereof; but whoever forgives and makes reconciliation, his reward is with Allah. Verily, he likes not the Zalimun. And indeed, whosoever takes revenge after he has suffered wrong, for such there is no way (of blame) against them. The way (of blame) is only against those who oppress men and rebel in the earth without justification; for such there will be a painful torment.

Surah 42 Ash-Shura Verses 40-42

And whomsoever Allah sends astray, for him there is no Wali (protector, helper, guardian) after Him. And you will see the Zalimun when they behold the torment, they will say: “Is there any way of return (to the world)?” And you will see them brought forward to it (Hell) made humble by disgrace, (and) looking with stealthy glance. And those who believe will say: “Verily, the losers are they who lose themselves and their families on the Day of Resurrection. Verily, the Zalimun will be in a lasting torment”. And they will have no Auliya (protector, helper, guardian) to help them other than Allah. And he whom Allah sends astray, for him there is no way.

Surah 42 Ash-Shura Verses 44-46

Verily, the Mujrimun (criminals, sinners, disbelievers) will be in the torment of Hell to abide therein forever. (The torment) will not be lightened for them, and they will be plunged into destruction with deep regrets, sorrows and in despair therein. We wronged them not, but they were the Zalimun. And they will cry: “O Malik (Keeper of Hell)! Let your Lord make and end of us”. He will say: “Verily, you shall abide forever”. Indeed, We have brought the truth (Muhammad, pbuh with the Quran) to you, but most of you have a hatred for the truth.

Surah 43 Az-Zukhruf Verses 74-78

Say: “Tell me! If this (Quran) is from Allah and you deny it, and a witness from among the Children of Israel (Abdullah bin Salam) testifies that (this Quran is from Allah) like [the Taurat (Torah)], and he believed (embraced Islam) while you are too proud (to believe)”. Verily, Allah guides not the people who are Zalimun.

Surah 46 Al-Ahqaf Verse 10

O you who believe! Let not a group scoff at another group, it may be that the latter are better than the former. Nor let (some) women scoff at other women, it may be that the latter are better than the former. Nor defame one another, nor insult one another by nicknames. How bad is it to insult one’s brother after having faith! And whosoever does not repent, then such are indeed Zalimun.

Surah 49 Al-Hujurat Verse 11

…Like Shaitan (Satan), when he says to man: “Disbelieve in Allah”. But when (man) disbelieves in Allah, Shaitan says: “I am free of you, I fear Allah, the Lord of the Alamin (mankind, jinn and all that exists)!” So, the end of both will be that they will be in the Fire, abiding therein. Such is the recompense of the Zalimun.

Surah 59 Al-Hashr Verses 16-17

Allah does not forbid you to deal justly and kindly with those who fought not against you on account of religion nor drove you out of your homes. Verily, Allah loves those who deal with equity. It is only as regards those who fought against you on account of religion, and have driven you out of your homes, and helped to drive you out, that Allah forbids you to befriend them. And whosoever will befriend them, then such are the Zalimun.

Surah 60 Al-Mumtahanah Verses 8-9

And who does more wrong than the one who invents a lie against Allah, while he is being invited to Islam? And Allah guides not the people who are Zalimun. They intend to put out the Light of Allah (i.e., the religion of Islam, this Quran, and Prophet Muhammad, pbuh) with their mouths. But Allah will bring His Light to perfection even though the disbelievers hate (it).

Surah 61 As-Saff Verses 7-8

Verily, We have tried them as We tried the People of the Garden, when they swore to pluck the fruits of the (garden) in the morning, without saying: In sha Allah (If Allah Wills). Then there passed by on it (the garden) a visitation (fire) from your Lord (at night and burnt it) while they were asleep. So, the (garden) became black by the morning, like a pitch-dark night (in complete ruins). Then they called out one to another as soon as the morning broke. Saying: “Go to your tilth in the morning, if you would pluck the fruits”. So, they departed, conversing in secret low tones (saying): “No Miskin (needy man) shall enter upon you into it today”. And they went in the morning with strong intention, thinking that they have power (to prevent the poor from taking anything of the fruits there from). But when they saw the (garden), they said: “Verily, we have gone astray”. (Then they said): “Nay! Indeed, we are deprived of (the fruits)!” The best among them said: “Did I not tell you, why say you not: In sha Allah”. They said: “Glory to Our Lord! Verily, we have been Zalimun”.

Surah 68 Al-Qalam Verses 17-29

Nuh (Noah) said: “My Lord! They have disobeyed me, and followed one whose wealth and children give him no increase but loss. And they have plotted a mighty plot. And they have said: ‘You shall not leave your gods, nor shall you leave Wadd, nor Suwa, nor Yaghuth, nor Yauq, nor Nasr (these are the names of their idols)’. And indeed, they have led many astray. And (O Allah): ‘Grant no increase to the Zalimun except error’”.

Surah 71 Nuh Verses 21-24

Since there are a lot of verses which speak about Zalimun in one way or another, detailing its meaning as well as the associated characteristics of the Zalimun, we intend to handle the topic in a more simplified form by preparing a table depicting the content of the Verses detailed above. We shall then move on to derive how exactly is Zalimun defined in the Quran.

Verse Associated characteristics/Observed attributes of Zalimun Remarks
V2:35 Defiance of a direct command of Allah
V2:51/92 Taking an object of worship other than Allah, despite the fact that clear proofs were shown to them The calf episode of Children of Israel during the time of Prophet Musa, after Firaun was drowned by Divine will of Allah.
V2:94-95 Who have no good deeds to offer after death The Children of Israel are challenged to long for death.
V2:124 Zalimun have been removed from inclusion into Prophethood and leadership
V2:145 Following the desires (ways) of the People of the Scriptures, after receiving the knowledge (Quran and Islam) The People of Scripture might not follow the religion of Muhammad (pbuh) even if all the proofs/evidences are shown to them
V2:193 There is to be no transgression (when there is a treaty with the opponents) except against Zalimun
V2:229 Transgressing the limits ordained by Allah The Verse is about rights of couples at the time of divorce (the Shariah law).
V2:246 Turning away from an order to fight against injustice The verse is about the incident when the Children of Israel were ordered to fight against the people who drove them out of their homes and the families were taken as captives; but they refused
V2:254 Does not spend (as charity) from the wealth/resources given by Allah The behaviour is attributed to disbelief
V2:258 Arrogance because of power/authority to such an extent that they become blind to rightful arguments in favour of Allah The incident pertains to Prophet Abraham trying to argue with the Nimrod, the ruler. Guidance of Allah is not provided to such people.
V2:270 Being unmindful of Allah during their conduct of managing wealth or taking vows (and thus breaking covenants and being stingy/extravagant in spending) Such shall not be helped by anyone (in the next life).
V3:57 Disbeliever and one who does not do righteous good deeds Allah does not like such people.
V3:86 Those who disbelieved after having believed, and after they were convinced about the truth of the Prophet Muhammad, pbuh, and after proofs/evidences were clear to them. Such people receive no guidance from Allah.

The reference is to the Makkan disbelievers who asked the Prophet to bring the torment on them as a proof of his truthfulness and Messenger ship.
V6:68 Those who mock the verses of the Quran as they engage in false conversation about it. Shaitan (Satan) apparently encourages such a behaviour.
V6:82 Those who associate partners with Allah in worship (Shirk) Such people did not deny the existence of Allah as the creator of the heavens and earth. Their real guilt was that they associated others in His attributes and His rights over man.

V6:128-130 Taking such people as Auliya (friends/helpers) who are misguided themselves and who in turn mislead them. V11:28-31 Men of faith (believers) who drive away the believers, giving preference to disbelievers The verse refers to the disbelievers’ demand from Prophet Nuh (Noah) to disassociate himself from the believers so that they get to sit in a special elite gathering. A similar message is also given in V6:52 and V18:28 with respect to Prophet Muhammad, pbuh.
V11:44 Those having traits of the People during the time of Prophet Nuh (Noah) who did not believe in his message Prophet Nuh continued appealing to his people to believe in Allah hour after hour, day after day year after year. He admonished his people and called them to Allah day and night, in secret and openly. He gave them examples, explained Allah’s signs and illustrated Allah’s ability in the formation of His creatures. But whenever he called them to Allah, they ran away from him. Whenever he urged them to ask Allah to forgive them, they put their fingers in their ears and became too proud to listen to the truth. It happened that every passing generation admonished the succeeding one not to believe Prophet Nuh and to hurt him. The father used to teach his child about the matter that was between himself and Prophet Nuh and counsel him to reject his call when he reached adulthood. Their natural disposition rejected believing and following the truth.

Allah is aware of the conduct of such people and He only gives them respite for a while; till the Day of Resurrection arrives.
V15:78-79 Those having traits of the People during the time of Prophet Shuaib (Midian) and Prophet Lut (Sodom); who did not believe in their message
  1. The Midianites grew from a small nation to a prosperous large one. However, their success didn’t satisfy them as they began to get involved in certain business practices that were corrupt and scandalous. In addition to these simple, “white-collar” crimes, they also engaged in much more violent behavior. There were also some Midianites who attacked and hijacked caravans on the highways. This may be an indication that they escalated in their crimes becoming progressively bolder and more dangerous. Prophet Shuaib preached to his people advising them to worship Allah and cease their cheating ways. But in the end, all they did was mock and threaten him. In fact, they let him know that were it not for his family they would have stoned him.
  2. The people of Sodom - their sins included inhospitality and robbery; they hated strangers and robbed travellers, apart from other mistreatments and rape. It was their sin of sexual misconduct as well which was seen as particularly egregious, with Lot strongly chiding them for approaching men with sexual desire instead of women. Lot exhorted them to abandon their sinful ways, but they ridiculed him and threatened to evict him from the cities. by saying that this man wants to be 'Pure’.
V16:112-113 Denial of a Messenger (Muhammad, pbuh) sent by Allah The denial of such a Favour from Allah was followed by a torment. The reference here is to the famine which prevailed over the people of Makkah for several years during the Prophethood of Muhammad (pbuh).

V22:71-72

Those who associate other with Allah in worship, without having any such knowledge or authority from Allah (meaning such a behaviour is based on their whims and conjectures and not on any logical argument or proof) Such people offer denial when confronted with logical arguments and proofs (from the Quran), and are even ready to counter the same by physical violence
V23:28 Those having traits of the People during the time of Prophet Nuh (Noah) who did not believe in his message Same as in V11:44 above
V23:41 Those having traits of the generation after time of Prophet Nuh (Noah) to whom a Messenger was sent but they disbelieved in him

The people of the generation after Prophet Nuh (Noah) became disbelievers and denied the Meeting in the Hereafter. They were blind in the luxuries and comforts they had in their lives. In their blindness they shrugged off the counsel of the Messenger and said that they are not going to be resurrected and that there is only the life of this world. They even started accusing the Messenger of lying against Allah.

(The reference is to Ad/Thamud)

  1. People of Nuh – same as in V11:44 above
  2. The people of Ad lived many years in the windswept hills of an area between Yemen and Oman. They were physically well built and renowned for their craftsmanship especially in the construction of tall buildings with lofty towers. They were outstanding among all the nations in power and wealth, which, unfortunately, made them arrogant and boastful. Their political power was held in the hand of unjust rulers, against whom no one dared to raise a voice. They were not ignorant of the existence of Allah, nor did they refuse to worship Him. What they did refuse was to worship Allah alone. They worshipped other gods, also, including idols. Prophet Hud clarified to them that the gods they worshipped would be the reason for their destruction, that it is Allah alone Who saves people, and that no other power on earth can benefit or harm anyone. The conflict between Hud and his people continued. The years passed, and they became prouder and more obstinate, and more tyrannical and more defiant of their prophet's message. Furthermore, they started to accuse Hud of being a crazy lunatic.
  3. After the destruction of the Ad, the tribe of Thamud succeeded them in power and glory. They also fell to idol-worshipping. As their material wealth increased so, too, did their evil ways while their virtue decreased. Like the people of Ad, they erected huge buildings on the plains and hewed beautiful homes out of the hills. Tyranny and oppression became prevalent as evil men ruled the land. So, Allah sent unto them His Prophet Salih, a man from among them. He called his people to worship Allah alone, and to not associate partners with Him. While some of them believed him, the majority of them disbelieved and harmed him by both words and deeds. They merely wanted to worship the same gods as their fathers had, with no reason, no proof, no thought. The proof of Salih’s message was evident, but despite this it was obvious that most of his people did not believe him. They doubted his words, thinking he was charmed, and they saw that he would not stop preaching. Fearing that his followers would increase, they tried to put him off by assigning him an important task; to prove that he was a messenger of Allah by performing a miracle. Let a unique she camel issue from the mountains. Allah granted Salih this miracle and a huge, unique, she camel appeared from the direction of the mountain. They laid a plot to kill the camel, and. as the she camel came to drink at the well, they killed her. (Word goes by that the people sought the help of their women folk to tempt the men to carry out their commands, and that the killers were given a hero’s welcome, cheered with songs and poetry composed in their praise). They also plotted to kill Salih and his household
  4. The dwellers of Ar Rass had a well sufficing them and their land. They also had a just and good-hearted king. When he died, they were much grieved for him. After four days Satan took his form and said: “I was not dead, but I kept absent from you to see your reaction.” They were very joyful. He commanded them to set up a curtain between him and them and told them that he would never die. A great number of them believed him and were fascinated with and worshiped him. Then Allah sent them a prophet telling them that it was only Satan who was addressing them from behind the curtain. He forbade them to worship him and commanded them to worship only Allah and no partner with Him. In spite of that, they killed their prophet and threw his body into a well. Therefore, Allah destroyed them and their homes.
